The dusty storage room was filled with relics of my past, but one item always caught my eye: a violin case. It had been there for years, a quiet reminder of my long-lost dreams.
When I was twelve, my parents enrolled me in violin lessons. The instrument felt like a part of me as I practiced scales and simple melodies. My teacher, Mrs. Thompson, praised my progress, and I dreamed of playing in the school orchestra. But as schoolwork piled up and extracurricular activities took up more time, practicing became a chore. I started skipping sessions, telling myself I would return to it later. Soon, the violin was stored away, tucked into the storage room.
Years passed, and I forgot about the violin until I attended a concert at my university. The musicians’ fingers moved effortlessly across the strings, creating a symphony that stirred something deep inside me. Memories flooded back — the scent of rosin (松香), the feel of the bow, the joy of making music. That night, I made a decision. I climbed into the storage room, wiping dust off the violin case. Inside, the instrument looked as clean and untouched as the day I had left it. Holding it felt like reuniting with an old friend. I tuned the strings hesitantly, then drew the bow across them. The sound was rough at first, but with each practice session, the music flowed again.
Months later, I performed at a small community event. Standing on stage, I played a piece I had once struggled with. The audience’s applause was overwhelming, but the real victory was reclaiming a part of myself I had abandoned.
Looking back, I realized that dreams that are on the shelf aren’t lost forever. Life may push them away, but they remain waiting for the moment we choose to pick them up again. The violin taught me that passion, once sparked, can be revived if we dare to reach for it.
The storage room may still hold relics of my past, but the violin is no longer among them. It hangs on my wall, a daily reminder that some things are worth revisiting, no matter how long they’ve been away.
24 What made the author decide to pick up the violin again?
A. The praise from Mrs. Thompson. B. The performance at the university concert.
C. The encouragement from the audience. D. The storage room that holds his relics.
25. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The author’s parents forced him to learn the violin in the beginning.
B. Playing the violin was a piece of cake for the author when revisiting it.
C. The author was accustomed to putting off extracurricular activities.
D. Reclaiming the violin-playing skill took the author much effort.
26. What does the underlined phrase “on the shelf” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. On display. B. In danger. C. Put aside. D. At hand.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Unfinished Symphony. B. The Dusty Storage Room.
C. My Successful Performance. D. My abandoned dream.

Picture a fish parading around on land, like a fearless explorer leaving the safety of its ocean home. These little creatures are incredible survivors as they can thrive in both water and on land, constantly switching between these two distinct environments. They do this thanks to their unique physical adaptations. You could even say they’re the “multi-taskers” of the fish world. As could be seen from its name, mudskipper (弹涂鱼) is an animal that “skips on the mud”, which stands out in the animal kingdom as a real oddball.
Fossil evidence shows that mudskippers have been around for millions of years. They’re like the living relics of an ancient era, adapted to swampy shores and mudflats. Over time, they’ve developed special features to help them live in these tough environments. They’ve traded the typical fish-only lifestyle and have learned to make the most of both worlds, much like a smart real-estate businessperson who diversified their holdings between two different profitable markets. Mudskippers are truly small and peculiar, with eyes that stick out like periscopes (潜望镜), constantly surveying their surroundings. Their strong pectoral fins are like little legs that allow them to skip, hop, and even climb on mud and rocks.
During low tide, mudskippers emerge from the water to hunt for insects, shellfish, and small sea creatures, looking like tiny ninjas (忍者) on a secret mission. They set up territories and even do some complicated “dancing” to show dominance or to court a mate. None of the ordinary fish engage in such complex social behaviors on land.
Now, let’s talk about their reproduction, lifespan, and the male Mudskippers’ parental responsibility. Female mudskippers lay eggs in holes, and then it’s the males’ turn to shine. The males serve as guards on the eggs with the devotion of a medieval knight protecting his kingdom. None of the average fish males take on such dedicated parental duties. The eggs develop over a period of time, and with a bit of luck, a new generation of mudskippers is born. These hardy fish can live up to several years, making their mark in the ever-changing intertidal zone.
In some regions mudskippers are caught and cooked in various ways, turning these adventurous little fish into a dietary delight. It’s a harsh twist of fate for these little adventurers, who’ve mastered the art of living in two worlds, to face the appetites of humans. Despite this, mudskippers continue to be a fascinating part of our natural world.
28. According to the passage, what is the feature of mudskippers?
A. They have tails acting like legs for balance.
B. Their sticking-out eyes serve as periscopes.
C. They can switch themselves on land or in ocean.
D. Their fossils are traded profitably on the market.
29. What can be inferred about the social behavior of mudskippers or typical fish?
A. Mudskippers are less territorial than ordinary fish.
B. Mudskippers exhibit more complex social interactions on land.
C. All typical fish do not perform “dancing” skills during mating.
D. Mudskippers avoid interaction with others of their species.
30. What does this metaphor “a medieval knight protecting his kingdom” primarily emphasize?
A. The loyalty and dedication of males in guarding eggs.
B. The aggression of male mudskippers toward predators.
C. The historical significance of mudskippers in evolution.
D. The physical strength required to build nesting burrows.
31. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To argue against the consumption of mudskippers as food.
B. To compare mudskippers with other intertidal zone animals.
C. To explain how mudskippers evolved from an ancient era.
D. To highlight the unique adaptations and ecological role of mudskippers.
D
Imagine a bustling city square captured by a drone (无人机) — thousands of people moving interacting, and making decisions in real time. Now, picture artificial intelligence (AI) analyzing this scene, not just counting faces, but inferring social patterns, emotional states, and even predicting crowd behavior. This vivid image illustrates how AI is transforming the social sciences, offering unprecedented tools to understand human complexity.
Take sociology, for example. Researchers at Stanford University used machine learning to analyze millions of historical newspaper articles, revealing shifts in public sentiment during economic crises. Similarly, linguistic experts have employed natural language processing to screen thousands of lawmaking speeches, identifying hidden ideological (意识形态的) trends that traditional methods might miss. In anthropology (人类学), AI-driven facial recognition has helped decode non-verbal communication trans-culturally, enriching cross-cultural studies.
AI may also play a role beyond Earth. In China’s ambitious space-based solar power project — a plan to collect solar energy in orbit and beam it to Earth — AI optimizes the positioning of solar panels, predicts energy transmission efficiency, and screens out signal interference from cosmic noise. This shows how AI can support not only social understanding but also the technological infrastructure that shapes future societies.
While comparative research highlights AI’s unique edge, critics warn of ethical pitfalls. “AI doesn’t eliminate bias — it often makes it worse,” cautions Dr. Elena Martinez, a sociologist at the London School of Economics. Algorithms (算法) trained on biased data may reinforce stereotypes or misrepresent groups that are often left out. Moreover, AI can ignore crucial subtle differences — like sarcasm (讽刺) or cultural expressions — leading to inaccurate interpretations. On the other hand, when properly designed, AI can also screen harmful misinformation from research inputs, improving data integrity.
Public opinion remains divided. While institutions like UNESCO advocate for “human-centered AI” in social research, many citizens fear being watched too closely. A 2025 Eurobarometer survey showed that 58% of Europeans support AI in academic research but oppose its use in monitoring public behavior without permission.
Looking ahead, the combined effect of AI and social sciences promises deeper insights into global challenges — from climate migration to mental health epidemics. As MIT’s Media Lab suggests, the future lies not in replacing human judgment, but in supporting it. With transparent algorithms, fair data practices, and strong collaboration, AI could become the most powerful lens yet for understanding society — not by replacing the human element, but by revealing its hidden dimensions.
32. What can be inferred from the first three paragraphs about the role of AI in social science research?
A. AI helps find hidden patterns traditional methods may miss.
B. AI takes the place of old ways altogether in anthropology studies.
C. Linguistic experts use AI only for modern lawmaking speeches.
D. AI has supported technological infrastructure in China’s space project.
33. The word “screen” in Paragraph 4 most probably means ______.
A. Observe. B. Block. C. Ignore. D. Display.
34. According to the passage, what is one reason AI might produce biased results in social studies?
A. It uses too little data. B. It cannot work outside labs.
C. Governments control it secretly. D. It often misses subtle meanings like sarcasm.
35. What is the author’s attitude toward the future of AI in social sciences?
A. Skeptical and critical. B. Indifferent and neutral.
C. Optimistic but cautious. D. Overly enthusiastic.
When we’re told “This coffee is hot” at our local cafe, the message is clear. ____36____ Does that mean it’s cold? Or just warm?
A team of scientists conducted experiments to identify how we process phrases that include negation (i.e., “not”). In the experiments, participants read — on a computer monitor — adjective phrases with and without negation (e.g., “really not good” and “really really good”) and rated their meaning on a scale from 1 (“really really bad”) to 10 (“really really good”) using a mouse. This scale was designed, in part, to determine if participants interpreted phrases with negation (否定) as the opposite of those without negation. In other words, did they interpret “really not good” as “bad”? ____37____
Here, the researchers found that participants took longer to interpret phrases with negation than they did phrases without negation — indicating, not surprisingly given the greater complexity, that negation slows down our processing of meaning.
In addition, drawing from how the participants moved their mouse, negated phrases were first interpreted as affirmative (i.e., “not hot” was initially interpreted as closer to “hot” than to “cold”), ____38____, suggesting that, for instance, “not hot” is not interpreted as either “hot” or “cold”, but as something between “hot” and “cold”. That is to say, negation merely reduces the temperature of our coffee and does not make it “cold”.
“This research highlights the complexity that goes into language comprehension, showing that this process involves more than just processing individual word meanings,” observes Arianna Zuanazzi, lead author of the study.
____39____. Especially, in communication, ranging from advertising to legal filings. As can be seen in a smoking cessation ad — “If people keep telling you to quit smoking cigarettes, don’t listen — they’re probably trying to trick you into living.” Another case in point is the classic slogan of a British perfume advertisement — “ ____40____” In addition, large language models in AI tools have difficulty interpreting passages containing negation. The researchers say that their results show how humans process such phrases while also potentially pointing to ways to understand and improve AI functionality.
A. Don’t be yourself.
B. The answer is absolutely no.
C. Our perfume suits you perfectly.
D. but later shifted to a softened meaning
E. But how do we interpret “It is not hot”?
F. Or, instead, understand it as something more measured?
G. Negation is often used intentionally to mask a clear understanding of a phrase.

At first, Michael didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors’ home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house when they got a call from one of his daughters: “The house next door is on fire!” He went to check. That’s when he saw two women and a girl helpless and heartbroken on their doorway.
“The baby’s in there!” one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called, Michael, then 64, immediately ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-old Tiara, the woman’s granddaughter and a playmate of Michael’s three youngest kids.
Entering the burning house was like “running into a bucket of black paint”. The thick smoke caused Michael to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous for anyone, but for Michael, who has severe lung disease, they were life-threatening.
After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath. “Where is Tiara?” he asked desperately.
“The second floor,” her aunt shouted back.
Michael knew he couldn’t hold his breath for long. However, taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar design to his, he made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath.
“Baby girl, where are you?”
His throat and lungs burned as if he’d inhaled fire instead of the smoke in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan (呻吟) emerged. Still unable to see, Michael fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl. An unlucky thought crossed his mind: I’m probably gonna die up here.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Finally, Michael touched something.

Many industries are interested in Joe Higson’s work. There are many types of chemicals. Whichever they are, if used in the workplace, it’s crucial to keep people safe, and Joe’s machine helps with this. It can detect poisonous substances in places they shouldn’t be.
Some students have created a camera-operated weather balloon and sent it over 30 km into the Earth’s atmosphere.
The readings they’ve got so far are incredibly detailed and could be helpful for weather forecasting and many other uses. The photographs taken by the balloon’s camera are impressive too.
Something that’s attracted media attention is another type of underwater vehicle, which can operate in the severest conditions. It can explore the ocean depths where there’s absolutely no light, and it’s being used to learn about the behavior of the most difficult to reach marine life. There are hopes of taking it to the polar regions, where scientists hope to find out more about what might be living there.

The dusty storage room was filled with relics of my past, but one item always caught my eye: a violin case. It had been there for years, a quiet reminder of my long-lost dreams.
When I was twelve my parents enrolled me in violin lessons.
24. What made the author decide to pick up the violin again?
A The praise from Mrs. Thompson.
B 25. D 26. C 27. A
根据第三段“Years passed, and I forgot about the violin until I attended a concert at my university. The musicians’ fingers moved effortlessly across the strings, creating a symphony that stirred something deep inside me. Memories flooded back — the scent of rosin (松香), the feel of the bow, the joy of making music. That night, I made a decision. I climbed into the storage room, wiping dust off the violin case.(多年过去了,我忘记了小提琴,直到我在大学里参加了一场音乐会。音乐家的手指毫不费力地在琴弦上移动,创造出一种交响乐,触动了我内心深处的某种东西。回忆如潮水般涌上心头——松香的香味,琴弓的感觉,演奏音乐的喜悦。那天晚上,我做了一个决定。我爬进储藏室,擦去小提琴盒上的灰尘。)”可知,大学音乐会的演出让作者决定重拾小提琴。故选B项。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The sound was rough at first, but with each practice session, the music flowed again. (起初声音很粗糙,但经过每一次练习,音乐再次流淌起来)”可推断,作者重新掌握小提琴技巧付出了很多努力。故选D项。
【26题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线短语下文的内容“aren’t lost forever (……不会永远消失)”和“they remain waiting for the moment we choose to pick them up again (它们等待着我们再次捡起的时刻)”可知,“被搁置的”梦想才不会永远消失,会等待着我们再次捡起。
根据文章内容,特别是第一段“The dusty storage room was filled with relics of my past, but one item always caught my eye: a violin case. It had been there for years, a quiet reminder of my long-lost dreams. (满是灰尘的储藏室里堆满了我过去的遗物,但有一样东西总是引起我的注意:一个小提琴盒。它已经在那里很多年了,静静地提醒着我失去已久的梦想。)”可知,文章以“未完成的交响乐”比喻被搁置的梦想,最终通过重拾小提琴完成了对“人生乐章”的续写,A项“The Unfinished Symphony”既呼应音乐主题,又暗含“梦想重启”的核心主旨。故选A项。
C
In some regions, mudskippers are caught and cooked in various ways, turning these adventurous little fish into a dietary delight.
C 29. B 30. A 31. D

Imagine a bustling city square captured by a drone (无人机) — thousands of people moving, interacting, and making decisions in real time.
A 33. B 34. D 35. C

根据第二段中的“Researchers at Stanford University used machine learning to analyze millions of historical newspaper articles, revealing shifts in public sentiment during economic crises. Similarly, linguistic experts have employed natural language processing to screen thousands of lawmaking speeches, identifying hidden ideological (意识形态的) trends that traditional methods might miss. In anthropology (人类学), AI-driven facial recognition has helped decode non-verbal communication trans-culturally, enriching cross-cultural studies. (斯坦福大学的研究人员利用机器学习分析了数百万篇历史报纸文章,揭示了经济危机期间公众情绪的变化。同样,语言专家利用自然语言处理技术筛选了数千篇立法演讲,发现了传统方法可能忽略的潜在意识形态趋势。在人类学领域,人工智能驱动的面部识别技术帮助解码了跨文化的非语言交流,丰富了跨文化研究。)”可知,人工智能能够帮助发现传统方法可能遗漏的隐藏规律。故选A项。
根据第四段中的“On the other hand, when properly designed, AI can also screen harmful misinformation from research inputs, improving data integrity. (另一方面,如果设计合理,人工智能也可以从研究输入中screen有害的错误信息,提高数据的完整性。)”可知,要提高数据的完整性,应该是“屏蔽”有害的错误信息,由此可推测,此处“screen”的意思是“屏蔽、阻挡”,与“block”含义相近。故选B项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Moreover, AI can ignore crucial subtle differences — like sarcasm (讽刺) or cultural expressions — leading to inaccurate interpretations. (此外,人工智能会忽略关键的细微差异——比如讽刺或文化表达——从而导致不准确的解读。)”可知,人工智能在社会研究中产生偏见性结果的原因之一是它会遗漏讽刺等细微含义。故选D项。

E 37. F 38. D 39. G 40. A

Let’s Read
Among all book types, I strongly recommend biographies, offer more than life stories — they are sources of inspiration.
The primary reason for my recommendation is: reading about how historical figures or modern role models overcame failures, chased dreams, and stick to principles helps us gain wisdom. For instance, Helen Keller’s story teaches us resilience, while Elon Musk’s journey shows the power of innovation. What’s more, these real-life tales make abstract virtues like courage and persistence tangible and practical to us.
I hope more of us will dive into biographies. They won’t just broaden our horizons but also fuel our own growth. Together, let’s let these stories light up our “Fun of Reading Month” and beyond!

I recommend reading fantasy books, which create magical worlds with dragons, wizards, and epic adventures.
The first reason I recommend fantasy books is that they ignite imagination and offer an escape from reality, making them perfect for young readers. Personally, I’m always captivated this genre because it taught me to dream big and think creatively. For example, reading the trilogy of “The Lord of the Rings” filled me with joy and hope.

Possible version 1:
Finally, Michael touched something. A shoe, then an ankle — It was Tiara! He scooped her into his arms and stood. Turning, he fought through the smoke and made his way to the outside. Michael put Tiara down on the doorway. And He started CPR — the first time he’d ever done so. The women stood behind him, praying silently. Soon a slight cough came from Tiara’s throat. He gave five more breaths. She opened her eyes and took a breath on her own.
Tiara was safe now; however, Michael fainted to the ground, unconscious. When he woke up, Michael found himself in the hospital, surrounded by his neighbors who constantly said thank-you to the hero. Michael spent over a week in the hospital. Tiara was released from the hospital after a few days. The fire sickened Michael’s lung disease, and he feels the effects even two years later. “It’s a small price to pay,” he always replies. “I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Wouldn’t give it a second thought.”
Possible version 2:
Finally, Michael touched something. A small, trembling body pressed against the wall. His fingers closed around Tiara’s wrist, a lifeline in the suffocating darkness. “I’ve got you, baby girl,” he choked out, dragging her toward the stairwell. Flames licked at his heels as he stumbled down, every step felt like treading on red-hot coals. Tiara’s faint sobs were his only guide until the blinding morning light pierced the smoke. His legs felt like lead, but he knew he couldn’t give up. Upon vaguely seeing swaying figures, Michael tried to call for help, his throat blocked without making a sound, and his strength gradually fading. Luckily, just as he was struggling not to fall, two men rushed to them.
Tiara was safe now; however, Michael fainted to the ground, unconscious. When the emergency personnel arrived, Michael’s pale face was still stained with cigarette ash, and his hands instinctively protected the back of Tiara’s head. They quickly checked on Michael, who was in a critical condition due to his lung disease and smoke inhalation. When he woke up, Michael found himself in the hospital, surrounded by Tiara and her family. When they constantly said thank-you to the hero, Tiara’s eyes brimming with gratitude, reflecting the soft hospital lights, Michael’s mouth parted slightly, forming a curve upward, like a proud warrior amidst triumph. “It’s a small price to pay,” said the hero, “Anyone in a heartbeat would have made the choice.”
