My teammates and I — I have played basketball every week with the same group of guys for over ten years — laughed about the coronavirus. Some made “joke coughs” and there was a general feeling that this pandemic was not going to affect us. By the following week, basketball had stopped all around the world and the players of my club were all on Zoom calls wondering just what was happening. No one was laughing then. Without basketball and the gym, my physical fitness routine descended into daily panicked outdoor runs, and then I would do 100 push-ups. Soon those runs became shorter and less frequent, and 100 push-ups turned into 20. I also started eating like a bear about to enter hibernation because nothing mattered anymore. Though I have been playing basketball for over three decades, I’m not sure how many years I have left in me. I have developed weak ankles and tennis elbow, so I had to struggle with the idea that my basketball-playing days could be over. I would have to finally hang up the sneakers and shorts. The opening of gyms on June 13 helped, but I was never going to feel 100 percent until basketball came back. On July 1, community sport returned to New South Wales. Then the call came. A full court, five-on-five basketball session was organized for July 12. When I got to the venue and stepped on the court, I was greeted by friends I had not seen in a long time. There were elbow taps all around and an evident excitement — what had been missing from our lives for months. When we started playing, I forgot all about the coronavirus. I had been frightened that the sudden physical exertion would result in injuries, but my body held up and I played well. There was some joking around, some gentle gestures, and just an incredible amount of fun. Afterwards, I was riding high with the kind of tiredness that only the mental and physical exertion of basketball provides. I had not felt that good since before lockdown. It was a beautiful day. There were more people out than usual, enjoying the sunshine and the easing restrictions. It felt like we were on our way to living a relatively normal life. 4. What can we learn about the author from the article? A. He is a basketball player in his twenties. B. He changed his life due to the outbreak of coronavirus. C. He decided to retire from his basketball team. D. He suffered serious injuries when playing basketball. 5. According to the article, the author depends on basketball for ________. ① physical fitness ② fame and fortune ③ social interaction A. ①② B. ①③ C. ②③ D. ①②③ 6. The underlined words “was riding high” in the last paragraph probably mean “________”. A. felt embarrassed and guilty B. became sensitive and breathless C. became annoyed and impatient D. felt delighted and confident 7. In the community basketball session of July, the author ________. A. paid much attention to avoiding injury when playing basketball B. felt unsatisfied with the violent behaviors on the court C. was devoted to playing basketball with his teammates D. was certain his life was normal after he played basketball again C Generation Z (Gen Z), people born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, doesn’t completely reject the way modern economies work. Instead, they demand that this system be more responsible—especially when it comes to the “wealth contract (契约)” between individuals and companies. This desire for responsibility has a clear reason: a big gap between what Gen Z was told life would look like, and what they’re actually going through. Saad Amer, founder of an environmental consulting firm, points out that young people were taught a “generational fable”: spend years and savings on higher education, secure a stable career and eventually own a house—a routine once seen as a reliable path to financial security. Yet 2024 housing market data tells a different story: the average age of first-time U. S. homebuyers reached 38 (the highest on record), and 52% of Gen Z renters are struggling with high rent—spending over 30% of their monthly income on rent, a level considered “financially stressful” in housing research. This difference between expectation and real-life experience has reshaped what Gen Z wants from work. They don’t just want “good pay”—they are eager for fair wealth sharing; salaries linked to clear, public performance rules, promotions decided by measurable work results, and job security that doesn’t disappear when a company’s profits drop. They firmly reject “performative benefits” like free snacks or yoga classes, seeing these extras as tricks that take their focus away from low salaries and unclear career growth paths. Charlene Li, an expert who studies workplace trends, notes: “Gen Z doesn’t hate hard work—they hate working hard for a system that hides how wealth is made and who can benefit from it.” For companies, if they ignore these demands, they’ll keep losing young workers. Gen Z sees their jobs as part of who they are. They won’t take jobs that make them choose between “earn a living” and “sticking to what they believe is right.” In other words, they don’t just ask, “How much will I get paid?” They want to know, “Will this job give me long-term security? And does the company treat its workers fairly, even when it’s making money?” 8. What does the “generational fable” assume? A. Rent burden is a short-term problem B. Higher education ensures economic security C. Companies promise long-term financial safety D. Gen Z values higher education to secure a job 9. Why are the data mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To prove Gen Z struggles to own a house B. To suggest the U. S. needs stricter rent control. C. To demonstrate the generational fable fails in reality D. To show Gen Z’s housing costs are high 10. What does the underlined word “performative” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. No-value B. High-cost C. Just-for-show D. Work-related 11. What does Gen Z demand from companies? A. High pay and career choices B. Earning a living and easy tasks C. Company profits and worker rights D. Workplace fairness and job security D Hydrogen fuel-cell (氢燃料电池) vehicles aren’t just from science fiction or unusual experiments. Cars run on hydrogen, like the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo, are already available, and hydrogen fuel-cell technology is developing fast with the support of billions of dollars in federal research. So why are hydrogen cars almost never seen on U.S. roads today? “The answer is simple: cost issues,” Sergey Paltsev, a senior scientist at the MIT Energy Initiative told Popular Science. Politicians and car makers once supported the fuel cell — which turns hydrogen’s chemical energy into electricity to power an electric motor — as the future of passenger cars. But cheaper batteries and a lot of electric vehicle charging infrastructure (基础设施) have pushed battery-electric cars far ahead. To switch widely to hydrogen cars, we need to cut costs and build a large amount of infrastructure. The Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center shows 55 public hydrogen fueling station locations in the U.S. today, almost only in California, while there are more than 68,000 active public electric vehicle charging stations across the country. “Nothing will change next year, or probably even in the next five years, but hydrogen vehicles have better uses ahead,” said Paltsev. In fact, hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles work better for medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks and aviation (航空). Also, battery-electric vehicles have problems when it comes to driving range, charging time or carrying heavy loads. The fact that hydrogen passenger cars aren’t practical in places like the U.S. now doesn’t mean we should just give up on hydrogen fuel-cell technology. “We might need it for many other reasons in the future,” Paltsev warned. He pointed out that international political issues could impede the supply of raw materials for batteries, making hydrogen cars suddenly more affordable. 12. What do we learn about the development of hydrogen fueling stations in the U.S.? A. They are evenly distributed across all states in the United States. B. Their number is far less than that of electric vehicle charging stations. C. They will reach 68,000 in the next five years according to current trends. D. They are mainly built to serve passenger cars as their primary target users. 13. We can infer from the passage that battery-electric vehicles ________. A. are not suitable for medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks B. have solved the problems of driving range and charging time C. will be replaced by hydrogen vehicles in five years D. require fewer raw materials than hydrogen vehicles 14. The underlined word "impede" in Paragraph 5 probably means ________. A. hide B. delay C. encourage D. block 15. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Hydrogen vehicles have completely lost the competition with battery-electric cars. B. Hydrogen fuel-cell technology is useless due to high costs and poor infrastructure. C. Hydrogen vehicles face current challenges but have promising applications in the future. D. The U.S. government should stop investing in hydrogen fuel-cell research. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 British libraries are in crisis—again. Today, I’m here to discuss the impacts of smartphones on students. Nowadays, smartphones are everywhere among us. We use them to chat, study, and entertain ourselves. Smartphones bring both advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, they help us a lot. We can search for study materials, watch educational videos, and communicate with teachers and classmates easily. On the other hand, many students are addicted to mobile games and social media. They spend hours on their phones, ignoring their studies. This leads to poor grades and health problems. To solve these problems, I have some suggestions. First, set a time limit for using smartphones every day. Second, use them mainly for study purposes. Last but not least, parents and teachers should guide us to use smartphones properly. Let’s make good use of smartphones and avoid their negative effects. Thank you! 写作示范二 Good morning, dear teachers and classmates! The topic of my speech today is “The Impacts of Smartphones on Students”. As we all know, smartphones have become an important part of our lives. Smartphones benefit us in many ways. They allow us to access a world of knowledge through the Internet. We can learn new things anytime, anywhere. However, they also cause some problems. Some students can’t resist the temptation of games and videos, which affects their study and rest. Excessive use of smartphones may also harm our eyesight and reduce our real-life communication skills. To make better use of smartphones, we should develop good habits. For example, we can use apps to help us study instead of just playing games. We should also communicate more with people face-to-face. Let’s use smartphones wisely and make them our helpful assistants in study and life. Thank you for listening! 写作示范三 Good morning, everyone! I’m very glad to share my thoughts on the impacts of smartphones on students. In modern society, smartphones are widely used by students of all ages. Smartphones offer us great convenience. We can keep in touch with friends, get the latest news, and even take online courses. But at the same time, they bring challenges. Some students waste too much time on smartphones, staying up late to play games or watch short videos. This not only affects their study but also does harm to their physical and mental health. To make the most of smartphones, I suggest the following. First, manage our time properly and don’t let smartphones control our lives. Second, choose useful apps and use them to improve ourselves. Finally, balance the use of smartphones with other activities. Let’s use smartphones smartly and enjoy a healthy and meaningful student life. Thank you! 写作示范四 Good morning, teachers and fellow students! Today, I’d like to talk about the impacts of smartphones on us students. Smartphones have become so common that we can hardly imagine life without them. On the positive side, smartphones are powerful learning tools. We can use them to look up words, watch tutorials, and join online discussions. They also help us stay connected with friends and family. However, the negative impacts can’t be ignored. Many students are overly dependent on smartphones, spending hours scrolling through social media or playing games. This leads to a lack of focus in class and a decline in academic performance. To use smartphones more effectively, we need to set clear rules for ourselves. Limit the time spent on non - study related activities and make sure to use smartphones in a way that benefits our study. Let’s take control of our smartphone usage and make them contribute positively to our growth. Thank you! 写作示范五 Good morning, everyone!
