at a building site near her house in Bengalure,India."Their feet were bare, dirty and bleeding,
reflects Sia,"They were just walking around that building site like it was an everyday practice for
them."And it was in that moment that Sia realized how lucky she herself was
She went back home and opened her closet doors, seeing shoes piled up high. She headed to
her mother's closet next, literally dusting off spiderwebs from some shoes. Then she rushed to
give them all away to the barefoot children.
Later that year, with the help of her parents,Sia founded Sole(鞋底;脚掌)Warriors,a
charity organization,with the motto "Donate a sole,save a soul.Telephone calls from people
who wanted to help came flooding in.For months,Sia stayed up till 2 a.m.,contacting people and
dealing with related affairs. Now in its fifth year, the organization collects used footwear, repairs it
and donates the finished products to people in need.In its first campaign,Sole Warriors gave out
700 pairs of shoes.Today that number stands at around 28,000,thanks to the hard work of a team
of about 80 volunteers.
But the organization's growth wasn't without its challenges. When Sia was trying to find a
company which was willing to repair and clean up the worn-out shoes free of charge, she faced
one difficulty after another before finding India's Pressto Cobler that would join her in the effort.
"Being a 13-year-old,I did face a lot of bias because at my age, people were less willing to hear
ne out,”says Sia.
In honor of her impact,in 2021 Sia was given the Diana Award, one of the greatest honours a
young person can receive for social work. But her work isn't done."Our goal has always been to
touch a million feet,"she says.

As wildfires spread across Los Angeles, the J.Paul Getty Museum showed its strong disaster
readiness. With fire within six feet of the Getty Villa on January 7,the museum's strong protective
actions became a great example of resilience.
The Getty Museum's workers, working 24-hour by turns, checked the hilltops around both
the Getty villa and the Getty Center. The older Getty Villa, home to thousands of old and valuable
objects,is located in the Pacific Palisades, while the Getty Center in Brentwood houses famous
artworks like Vincent van Gogh's Irises.Provided with fire extinguishers ()the workers
checked the grounds for fire, carefully protecting the museum's valuable collections.
The museum's survival against the fires was unusual among the extremely harmful damage
that killed dozens and destroyed thousands of homes. With $9.1 billion and years of experience in
fighting wildfires, the Getty Museum had used millions in fire protection actions, like fire resistant
(防火)architecture..
When the fire put the Getty Villa at risk,President Katherine Fleming watched anxiously
from the Getty Center's control station,tracking the fire's progress.The Getty Villa,built with
fire-resistant concrete (walls and roofs, remained unharmed though the fire was very
close. The same was true for its priceless collection of 40,000 valuable objects.
Meanwhile,the Getty Center's architecture,designed by Richard Meier with fire-resistance
in mind, has 1.2 million square feet of stone and huge open spaces to stop fire from spreading. The
museum's advanced watering system was started quickly, wetting the grounds and further
protecting the treasures.
In the case of the Getty Museum, planning ahead protected its treasures. But in the future,as
more disasters driven by the climate emergency must happen, the attention of normal people is
important. We call for everyone to support efforts to make the city stronger.

B.Valuable objects at the Getty Museum.
C.Daily responsibilities of museum workers.
D.Fire protection efforts by museum workers.
30.Which of the following has little effect on the survival of the Getty Center?
A.The concrete floors
B.The large space.
C.The watering system.
D.The use of stone materials.
31.What does the author mainly want to stress in the last paragraph?
A.The increase of climate-driven disasters.

A new trend called“praise groups'”or“in--need-of -praise'”chat groups has become popular on
Chinese social media. In Chinese culture, where modesty is valued, openly seeking and
giving praise is uncommon. These chat groups provide a platform for people to receive
compliments and encouragement, which are often lacking in their daily lives.
To join a praise group, users can pay a fee on e-commerce sites, starting at 50 yuan for five
minutes of compliments. The group members will then show the person with praises and kind
words. The compliments can be designed for a friend or loved one as well.Participants have found
that being praised by strangers can help lift their spirits and improve their self-confidence.
For example,Meng Zha,a student at Shanghai's Tongji University, tried the service and
found it amusing and uplifting. She received compliments on her appearance and even quotes(
)from popular songs.Ms Meng couldn't help but laugh at the compliments and expressed her
desire to post such high-quality praises in the future.
Praise groups have appeared as a way for people in China to seek and receive compliments
and encouragement that may be lacking in their daily lives. It provides a positive and uplifting
experience for participants, improving a sense of happiness and self-worth.
Those who support the groups, see them as an antidote to extremely bad moods which
are often associated with things happening on the Internet."At first, the purpose of this group is to
make us learn to praise others and accept others'praises confidently. Here we can drop everything,
and use our heart to praise and support others,"one member said. But the life journey is long and
there are some unexpected situations that we can only count on ourselves to face when there is no
one out there to offer help.
32 What is the purpose of praise groups?
A.To make praise popular.
B.To have everyone supported.
C.To share common interests.
D.To give people hope and happiness.
33.What can we learn about Meng Zha in paragraph 3?
A.She was not strong enough.

A.A kind of medicine.
B.A way of making new friends.
C.A method of being confident.
D.The wisdom of solving problems.
35.What is the author's attitude to praise groups?
A.Critical.

余选项。
Show someone your support
6
Sometimes people who are close to us go through difficult times. That could include coping
with an illness or other big changes in their life.36 Just wanting to support them is a
good place to begin. Here are some ideas to consider.
Let them know you care.
Your friend or family member may feel like talking about what they are going through,or
they may not. It's always appropriate to let them know you care and will be there for them.
37 Making a video expressing your love for them is another option. You could also ask
them if it would be OK to bring or mail them a baked treat,or you might put together a care
package.
Spend time together.
38 If possible, ask if they would like to do something together, like take a walk,
watch a movie,or do a puzzle. If it's a family member who lives far away, you can ask if they
want to video chat or talk on the phone. You could also send them photos of your day to help them
feel connected.
39
People who care about you likely want you to keep your daily routine as much as possible,
even while they are going through something challenging. But you might also be able to step in
when possible, with tasks like doing the dishes, looking after a pet,or ironing clothes
Pay attention to their needs and wants.
This is often the hardest, but most important way to show you care.Even if they are just
telling you a story about something silly that happened at the supermarket,it's important that you
respond appropriately. If you ignore them when it comes to simple things, they won't feel that you
care about them.40_
A.Help out with small tasks.
B.Stick to your daily routine.
C.Your presence alone can be comforting.
D.Even small gestures can mean a lot to others.
E.You could show your care by making a card with a note inside.
F.Therefore, they are much less likely to share anything deeper with you.
G.You probably wish you could do something to help but might not be sure how.
