In a quiet corner of a busy city street in Brooklyn, New York, there is a special fridge. It’s not in a kitchen or a supermarket. It stands on the sidewalk, open for everyone 24 hours a day. It is a “community fridge,” and its rule is simple: “Take what you need, leave what you can.”
The idea started during a difficult time when many people lost their jobs and had trouble buying enough food. A group of neighbors decided to do something to help. They put a second-hand fridge outside and filled it with fresh vegetables, fruit, milk, and bread. Anyone who was hungry could come and take food for free, without having to ask or feel shy.
Local restaurants, bakeries, and families also help. Instead of throwing away good food that they don’t sell or eat, they put it in the community fridge. This not only helps people who are in need but also reduces food waste. It’s a win-win idea.
The community fridge has done more than just provide food. It has brought the community closer. People meet each other at the fridge. Some come to give food, others come to take it. They stop and talk, sharing stories and smiles. A volunteer (志愿者) said, “It’s not just about food. It’s about being good neighbors and taking care of each other.” The project has been so successful that hundreds of similar community fridges have appeared in cities all over the world.
32. Who can take food from the community fridge?
A. Anyone who is hungry. B. Only people who live in Brooklyn.
C. Volunteers who work there. D. Only people who have lost their jobs.
33. How does the community fridge help the environment?
A. It uses less electricity than a normal fridge.
B. It encourages people to eat more vegetables.

A. costs a lot of money B. only helps a small number of people
C. is difficult to understand D. has good results for everyone in it

To make products—like better phone batteries or stronger phone screens—we need to choose the right materials. Before AI, this was slow and wasteful. Scientists used a “try-and-see” way: they tested one mix of materials after another with their hands. For example, if they wanted a new battery material, they might have to try thousands of different mixes. Doing this by hand took years, and most mixes didn’t work. It wasted time, money, and even hard to find resources on materials that were never useful.
AI has made this process fast. Instead of guessing, AI uses data (数据) from old experiments (实验) and studies to pick the best materials quickly. Google’s AI team once found 2.2 million new crystal materials (晶体材料) in a short time—something that would take humans hundreds of years. A Chinese research group also used AI to find a key material. This material makes chemical reactions (化学反应) faster, and they found it in a few hours, not years. AI also saves money; it cuts real-world tests from thousands to just a few, so we save time and resources.
But AI isn’t perfect. First, it needs good data to work well. If the data used to teach AI is wrong or not enough, the materials AI suggests might not work. Sometimes, AI even picks materials with uncommon or dangerous elements (元素)—these sound good on paper but can’t be used in real products. Second, AI can’t always say why a material works. This makes scientists not sure if the material is really dependable, or if AI just got lucky. And sometimes, AI “invents” materials that already exist, so we waste effort on repeats.
AI has made picking materials much faster and cheaper, but it still needs human scientists to check.
Only when AI and humans work together can we turn AI’s ideas into real, useful materials for our daily lives.
36. What was bad about the old “try-and-see” way of picking materials?
A. It could only be used to find battery materials.
B. It took a long time and wasted resources.
C. It needed too many expensive machines.
D. It could not test uncommon material mixes.
37. How does AI help pick materials?
A. It does all real-world tests by itself.
B. It invents new elements to make materials.
C. It teaches scientists to mix materials by hand.
D. It uses past data to find good materials quickly.
38. What is a problem with using AI to pick materials?
A. It works too fast for scientists to follow.
B. It makes more real-world tests necessary.
C. It can only find materials that already exist.
D. It needs good data to give dependable results.
39. What is the structure of the passage?
A. Cause→Effect→Comparison→Story→Advice.
B. Example→Rule→Exception→Data→Discussion.
C. Old Way→New AI Way (Good Points)→AI’s Problems→Conclusion.
D. Introduction→AI’s History→Experiment→Result→Future Plans.
40. What is the best title for the passage?
A How We Picked Materials in the Past
B. How to Save Money on Material Tests
C. AI: The Perfect Tool for Picking Materials
D. AI Helps Pick Materials: Fast but Not Perfect

第二节 阅读表达(共5题;每题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
Excited about joining a school club—like the English Drama Club, or Robotics Team? An interview might be part of the process, but don’t worry! These easy tips will help you succeed:
1. Learn what the club is all about
You can call the club leader or check their school WeChat account (most clubs have one!) to find information. Thinking about questions they might ask (e.g., “Why do you want to join?”) will help you feel ready.
2. Get Ready on Interview Day
Bring your student ID, a pen, and a small notebook (to jot down notes if needed). Try to arrive 30 minutes early before the interview. This gives you time to find the room, and keep calm!
3. Relax Before You Walk In
Feeling nervous is totally normal! You can take three slow deep breaths, and smile. When they say “Come in,”, walk in confidently. Greet the interviewers with a “Hello!”
4. Answer Questions with Confidence
Speak up! Tell them why you love the club (“I’ve always wanted to act in a drama!”) and what you can bring (“I’m good at coding—maybe I can help with the Robotics Club’s projects!”). If you don’t understand a question, just say: “Could you please say that again?”
5. Ask Smart Questions Before Leaving
When they say “Do you have any questions for us?”, use this chance to learn more! Avoid asking things they already told you. Instead, try: “How do members of the English Drama Club work together?” “What skills do I need to practice before joining the Robotics Team?”
And always say “Thank you” when you leave! Follow these tips, and you’ll have chances to join the club of your dreams!

Penny walked over softly. “Don’t worry,” she said. “I’ll help you get home.” She carefully picked Bella up and held her under her wing to keep her warm. The wind blew hard, and the snow made the journey tricky, but Penny didn’t stop. She looked for Bella’s nest everywhere—high in the icy trees, near the frozen lake, and behind the snow hills.
After a long walk, they finally saw the tall tree with Bella’s nest. Penny helped Bella climb back safely. Bella’s family chirped happily when they saw her. “Thank you! You saved me,” Bella said. Penny smiled. “Helping others makes me happy,” she replied.

C. is difficult to understand D. has good results for everyone in it
35. What is the writer’s idea about “the community fridge”?
A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Opposed.

37 How does AI help pick materials?
A Cause→Effect→Comparison→Story→Advice.
B. Example→Rule→Exception→Data→Discussion.
C. Old Way→New AI Way (Good Points)→AI’s Problems→Conclusion.
D. Introduction→AI’s History→Experiment→Result→Future Plans.
40. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How We Picked Materials in the Past
