China indeed has a lot to offer. If you are planning a trip to China for the very first time, you perhaps have no idea where to go and what to do. Here are the top four must-visit places, which will surely lure (引诱) you into visiting the country.
Mount Huangshan
Close to Hangzhou and Shanghai in east China are the Mount Huangshan Scenic Areas. They attract people with its four wonders: seas of clouds, twisted pine trees, hot springs, and oddly-shaped rocks. Compared to Jiuzhaigou National Forest Park and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, the Mount Huangshan National Park is easier to reach, and thus the busiest and most popular one.
Yangshuo
The town of Yangshuo with its wonderful landscapes of unique green hills extending up towards the sky has been attracting travelers from China and other parts of the world ever since the mid-1980s. Many people who have visited Yangshuo describe it as their favorite part of the country.
Kunming
Kunming is the transportation, economic, cultural and industrial center of southwest China. It is linked to all major cities of China and also Vietnam by rail. The mild climate of Kunming makes it an ideal place to visit all through the year. Mainly because of its great climatic conditions, flower growing is a big industry here and you can visit a big botanical garden and flower markets and exhibits.
Leshan Giant Buddha
Created in the eighth century, in order to calm down a rough river that was running by its feet, the Leshan Giant Buddha is among the greatest architectural wonders of China. The farms of the future may look very different from that of today. That’s because farms do not have to be outside anymore. They also won’t have to be above ground. In London, 100 feet below the streets there was a huge empty space. Richard Ballard and Steven Dring, founders of the company Growing Underground, thought it would be an ideal spot to build a hydroponic (水栽的) farm. After all, these types of farms are doing well in other indoor spaces.
Founded in 2015, Growing Underground’s farm grows microgreens and salad leaves using hydroponic technology that grows plants in water but not soil. In fact, the company said that its hydroponic technology allows for the perfect pest-free growing environment.
These methods use about 70 percent water less than traditional field agriculture and all the nutrients are kept within a closed circle system. They can grow the greens all year round because they are not affected by weather or growing seasons.
But it is the LED lighting system that is the key to growing food underground. Ballard said, “Already, LEDs allow the growers to change the flavor of the greens, as their sugars and starches develop differently under different light spectrums (光谱).”
Right now, the company only sells greens with a lot of leaves because they are the only crops that grow fast enough to be economically feasible but Ballard believes that will change. “As technologies improve, you’ll see soft fruits, cucumbers, peppers,” he said.
The company’s goal is to keep food local. They say that all of the greens can be in your kitchen within four hours of being picked. They currently sell to local restaurants in London, but they hope to be entering the local groceries soon.
4. What makes the underground farm possible?
A. The rich soil. B. The great demand for fruits.
C. The hydroponic technology. D. The good weather condition.
5. What is the function of the LED lighting system?
A. To get rid of pests. B. To increase the temperature of underground farm.
C. To allow greens to grow rapidly. D. To provide various light spectrums.
6. What does the underlined word “feasible” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Difficult. B. Challenged. C. Impossible. D. Achievable.
7. What does the company expect of the underground farm?
A. It’ll benefit more customers. B. It’ll be environment-friendly.
C. It’ll keep food fresher for longer. D. It’ll use the latest technology.
C
Humans pollute the land, water and air with unwanted refuse. Almost 2.4 billion people don’t have access to clean water. The U.S. alone produces 147 tons of air pollution. In some countries, the smog (烟雾) caused by air pollution is deadly and can block out the sun densely. It is rare to find a beach in the world that doesn’t have litter. Humans produce about 300 million tons of plastic each year. More than 8 million tons of that plastic are thrown into the oceans. In 2017, about 5 trillion pieces of plastic littered the seas. The plastic in the oceans has devastating (毁灭性的) effects on wildlife.
Environmental scientists have been warning us for decades that the greenhouse gas emissions (排放) that come from burning fuels are affecting the planet’s ecosystem. The increase of CO2 in the atmosphere traps heat that would otherwise escape into space, increasing the Earth’s overall temperature. This has caused Arctic ice to melt and ocean levels to raise. It’s said that ocean levels will rise 1 to 4 feet by 2100.
For every corn field you see, chances are there was once a forest in its place. As our population continues to increase, humans create more and larger farms. This means reducing the number of forests. Forests are also cleared for the wood that we use to build our houses. About 18 million acres of trees are clear-cut every year for wood. This has devastating effects for the wildlife that once called those forests home.
8. What’s the percentage of plastic created yearly that is littered to the ocean?
A. About 2.7%. B. Over 3%.
C. Less than 2.6%. D. More than 26%.
9. How is the first paragraph mainly developed?
A. By making assumptions. B. By making comparisons.
C. By following time order. D. By citing figures.
10. Which of the following can best summarize Paragraph 2?
A. Rising ocean levels. B. Global warming.
C. Greenhouse gas emissions. D. Overpopulation.
第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
A few years ago I put my first tomato seed in a pot on my balcony (阳台). ___11___. At that time, I was like many people, living fast with food delivery and my phone. I had no idea what “growing” really meant. This is the truth of modern life: We want quick results but forget that life needs time.
I watered the pot every day. ___12___. A tiny yellow-green sprout (新芽) came out. At that moment, I felt a warm light in my heart. It made me happy in a simple way. Psychology (心理学) tells us that caring for life and watching it grow can bring deep positive feelings.
___13___. I started checking the weather. On sunny days I was afraid it might be thirsty; on rainy days I worried it might get too much water. This became a kind of “mindfulness”. I had to pay attention to the plant and its real needs. It pulled me away from stress and back to the present moment. I watched it grow from two leaves to four, from lying low to standing tall. Patience became something real, built day by day.
The most amazing moment was when the first small green tomato came out. ___14___. When I picked it, I felt happy. It tasted very sweet. The special taste came not only from freshness, but from being part of the whole process. When you know how much time and care a fruit needs to grow, you feel thankful instead of just taking it for granted.
Now my balcony is full of plants. Some grow well, while some do not. But when my hands touch the soil, I feel calm. These quiet plants show a simple truth: All growth needs time, and all harvests need effort. ___15___.
A. It gave me a sense of failure
B. I felt sad when it rained heavily
C. After that, my mornings changed
D. One morning, a small crack opened in the soil
E. As time went by, it slowly turned the color of sunset
F. In this small green space, I found my connection to the earth
G. I did it mostly out of curiosity, not because I expected anything

第六部分 写作(满分25分)
61. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.
Men may eat more in summer
Winter may be seen as the time to fill up with food, but in fact, sunny summer months are when men eat more calories—unlike women.
The effect seems to occur because sunlight makes the skin release an appetite-stimulating hormone (激素), says Carmit Levy at Tel Aviv University in Israel. Levy and her colleagues noticed the effect in experiments in mice, in which male animals exposed to UV light (紫外线) ate more food.
To see if humans do the same, the team used data on about 3000 people who had filled in questionnaires as part of the Israeli government’s national health and nutrition survey. Between March and September, the men consumed about 17 per cent more calories per day than they did during the rest of the year, while the women’s food intake stayed about the same.
Human appetite is influenced by many complex systems, but a substance called ghrelin, a hormone produced in the body that stimulates appetite, seems to be the only hormone that directly stimulates eating. It was thought to be mainly produced by the stomach when empty. “It tells the brain to eat more,” says Caroline Gorvin at the University of Birmingham, UK.
Further investigation revealed that exposing male mice to UVB (紫外线 B 段波) radiation, which is present in sunlight, raised levels of ghrelin production by fat cells in their skin. This was blocked by the female sex hormone, which may explain why the effect wasn’t seen in the female mice or the women. Boosted ghrelin production was also seen in men’s skin samples that were exposed to UV light in the lab.
Skin hasn’t previously been thought to play a role in appetite, says Gorvin. The reason for the effect is unclear, but it may be an adaptive response to fuel greater physical activity in summer, says Levy.
