A recent research study suggests that learning music doesn’t make you smarter.
For a while, there was an idea found on the Internet and in various magazines that suggested that babies could become smarter if they listened to Mozart, or to other classical music. Inspired, some parents bought classical CDs for their babies in the hope that this would boost their intelligence. But this so-called “Mozart Effect” has been challenged repeatedly.
But is taking music lessons surely different from just listening to music? Wouldn’t taking music lessons make kids smarter? That’s exactly the question that many researchers over the years have tried to answer. Some of their studies concluded that it does, and some found that it doesn’t. For example, one study showed that music education did not improve reading skills, while another one found a small effect of music on young children’s ability to learn words.
The researchers of the new study, Giovanni Sala (Fujita Health University) and Fernand Gober (London School of Economics), looked at the data behind 54 carefully selected studies, and after carefully comparing the data from different papers, they concluded that children who took music lessons did not score higher on tests that measure their intelligence or academic ability than kids that didn’t learn music.
If music doesn’t make you smarter how does that explain other research that shows that music lessons help students’ school performance? It seems like there is something about music lessons that makes students able to perform better in their other classes. That doesn’t have to be intelligence, and it’s likely not. Music lessons could have helped in different ways: They could have led to a change in homework habits, they could have increased confidence, or they could have improved social skills. And finally, they also mention that music education could still be beneficial to students’ performance in non-music subject if the music is combined with these classes. So feel free to keep making music, and keep encouraging children to learn music.
41. Which of the following words is closest to the underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 2?
A. Reduce. B. Improve. C. Understand. D. Influence.
42. What can we learn about the “Mozart Effect”?
A. It is most likely to be ineffective.
B. It was first presented by Mozart.
C. It helps parents take good care of their children.
D. It will draw more and more researchers’ attention.
43. What does the example in Paragraph 3 show?
A. Listening to music benefits kids a lot.
B. Whether music education suits all kids remains unknown.
C. Listening to music fail to help kids in language learning.
D. Whether taking music lessons makes kids smarter is controversial
44. How did the researchers carry out the new study?
A. They did 54 small studies in all.
B. They observed children in music classes.
C. They examined plenty of previous research.
D. They did a long-term survey of musical students.
45. What conclusion is made in the last paragraph?
A Music lessons should be encouraged for children.
B. Intelligence determines one’s school performance.
C. A student’s intelligence can be increased with effort.
D. Students should avoid listening to music while studying.

The Yellow River is the cradle (摇篮) of China’s civilization. And flood control and prevention have always been key to the well-being of the people living along it. Now, scientists can better work on these issues by giving the river a digital twin.
The digital twin of the Yellow River uses various technologies, including big data, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things. Devices set up along the river collect and transmit information to the command center. Based on the information, a 3D model of the river is presented on the computer screen. It’s like the Yellow River has a twin that reflects its real conditions.
One big breakthrough in the river’s digital governance (管理) is “smart stones”. According to Wang Qin, a lead researcher at the Information Center of Yellow River Henan Bureau, a smart stone is a water-proof stone-shaped device with chips, a battery, and a signal transmitter They are buried in important dike (堤坝) locations to record and report the movement of dike stones. “Upon feeling movement of the dike stones, the smart stone sends an alarm to the command center for quick response,” Wang said.
“In the past, researchers had to learn the conditions of the dike on the spot by themselves, putting their lives at risk,” said Zhao Xiaoxiong from the bureau. “Now the smart stones can do this for us, more safely, quickly, and accurately.”
And in the sky, drones are flying. On the routes designed by engineers, the drones become expert patrollers (巡逻员) of the river, looking at its dikes and flood prevention projects. According to Shen Lin from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, thanks to the drones, researchers at the command center can get first-hand photos and information. “Researchers then update the 3D model according to the changes the drones reported. The newly updated model helps us test our floodwater release plans (泄洪计划) in case we need to batten down the hatches,” said Shen.
Under the water and up in the sky, intelligent systems are helping to protect the Yellow River Basin on all fronts. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, in the future, we can expect to see the construction of an even more comprehensive digital system for this important river.
46. What is the main purpose of creating a digital twin of the Yellow River?
A. To study the wildlife in the Yellow River.
B. To raise public awareness of river protection.
C. To improve flood control and prevention efforts.
D. To provide a virtual reality experience of the river.
47. How do the “smart stones” contribute to the river’s digital governance?
A. They record water quality. B. They enhance the river’s beauty.
C. They monitor and report dike movements. D. They serve as markets for important locations.
48. What is one of the functions of drones in the digital governance of the Yellow River?
A. Providing entertainment for the people living along the river.
B. Collecting data to update a 3D model for flood management.
C. Transporting researchers to remote locations along the river
D. Patrolling and getting first-hand wildlife photos.
49 What does the underlined part in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. To update the 3D model for accuracy. B. To prepare for a potential flood event.
C. To strengthen the riverbanks and dikes. D. To increase drone monitoring over the river.
50. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. The cultural and historical importance of the Yellow River.
B. The future plans for improving the Yellow River’s construction.
C. The use of smart stones and drones for flood control and monitoring.
D. The development of a digital system for the Yellow River’s management.
As a little boy, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather’s farm in western Pennsylvania. Surrounded by miles of winding stonewalls, the house and farm provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me.
I can still remember my first visit to the farm. I’d wanted to be allowed to climb the stonewalls. But my parents would never approve, because the walls were old and some stones were missing. I was still eager to climb it, so I summoned (鼓起) all my courage and entered the living room, where the adults had gathered.
“Can I climb the stone walls?” I asked nervously. At this moment, my parents still didn’t agree. Before I left the room sadly, my grandfather said, “Let the boy climb the stone walls. He has to learn to do things for himself.”
It took me about two hours to climb those stonewalls. Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventure. I’ll never forget what he said. “Fred, you made this day a special day just by being yourself. Always remember: there’s only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are.”
Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: my message to children at the end of almost every visit. “There’s only one person in this whole world like you,” the kids can count on hearing my say, “and people can like you as you are.”

If music doesn’t make you smarter, how does that explain other research that shows that music lessons help students’ school performance?
A. Music lessons should be encouraged for children.
B. Intelligence determines one’s school performance.
C. A student’s intelligence can be increased with effort.
D. Students should avoid listening to music while studying.
41. B 42. A 43. D 44. C 45. A

A Providing entertainment for the people living along the river.
B. Collecting data to update a 3D model for flood management.
C. Transporting researchers to remote locations along the river
D. Patrolling and getting first-hand wildlife photos.
49. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. To update the 3D model for accuracy. B. To prepare for a potential flood event.
C. To strengthen the riverbanks and dikes. D. To increase drone monitoring over the river.
50. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. The cultural and historical importance of the Yellow River.

故推知batten down the hatches应表示“做好准备,未雨绸缪”等含义,与B项“To prepare for a potential flood event.
根据第一段“The Yellow River is the cradle (摇篮) of China’s civilization. And flood control and prevention have always been key to the well-being of the people living along it. Now, scientists can better work on these issues by giving the river a digital twin. (黄河是中国文明的摇篮。洪水的控制和预防一直是生活在这条河上的人们幸福生活的关键。现在,科学家们可以通过给河流一个数字双胞胎来更好地解决这些问题。)”和第二段“The digital twin of the Yellow River uses various technologies, including big data, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things. Devices set up along the river collect and transmit information to the command center. Based on the information, a 3D model of the river is presented on the computer screen. It’s like the Yellow River has a twin that reflects its real conditions. (黄河的数字孪生体使用了各种技术,包括大数据、人工智能和物联网。沿河设置的设备收集信息并将信息传送到指挥中心。根据这些信息,在计算机屏幕上显示了河流的三维模型。就像黄河有了一个双胞胎,反映了它的真实情况。)”以及纵观全文可知,本文主要讲述了黄河数字化管理系统的开发。故选D项。

阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。
Many years have passed since then and today I host the television program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: my message to children at the end of almost every visit. “There’s only one person in this whole world like you,” the kids can count on hearing my say, “and people can like you as you are.”
