D. My favourite work of art
Before we write
You are going to introduce your favourite work of art at your art class.
Read Lisa’s introduction below. What makes this work of art special?
My favourite work of art is A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, created by the French artist Seurat. It was painted from 1884 to 1886. The painting presents a scene of weekend life. Some people are sitting and chatting on the cool, green grass. Others are enjoying the summer view of the River Seine with small white boats on it. Dogs are running and children are playing. It’s such a peaceful scene that I want to step into the painting and spend a day there. I love the relaxed life in it. Do you like it too?

A description is a “picture” in words.
Effective descriptive writing should have:
Teen skills: Adding descriptive details
• vivid details. Specific details paint a “picture” in the reader’s mind and readers can enter the writer’s experience through all five senses.
• precise language. Specific adjectives and nouns and strong action verbs give life to the “picture” being painted in the reader’s mind.

My favorite work of Chinese art is Along the River During the Qingming Festival. It was created by Zhang Zeduan in the Northern Song Dynasty. This painting is a masterpiece that vividly depicts the bustling scene of Bianjing, the capital city at that time.

In the painting, we can see various shops along the riverbank, with people coming in and out, doing business or just strolling around. There are also boats on the river, some carrying goods for trade, while others are used for transportation. People of different social statuses are shown, from the rich merchants in luxurious clothes to the common folks going about their daily lives. The details in the painting are amazing. For example, you can even see the expressions on people's faces and the texture of the buildings.

Discovery
Shadow plays are an old traditional folk art of China. They’re like a very old form of cinema. The puppets appear as shadows on the screen thanks to a light. People move the puppets and tell stories. Chinese people have enjoyed this early form of entertainment for more than a thousand years.

One of the most famous pieces of classical music is called “The Four Seasons” by the Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi. Each part tries to sound like a season. Spring sounds like birds. Summer sounds like thunder. Autumn sounds like the hunters’ horns. Winter sounds like the chattering of teeth.

Argentina’s “Cave of the Hands” is a rock art site with countless painted hands on the walls. There are not only handprints but also pictures showing animals, people and different shapes. The artwork tells us about the lives of people who lived thousands of years ago.

Which art form do you find the most interesting? Explain why.
I love shadow puppets! They use light and moving figures to tell stories. It’s like an old-fashioned cartoon where you control the characters by hand. The shadows make everything feel magical!

Vivaldi’s music is my favorite. Each song sounds like a season—thunder in summer or birds chirping in spring. You don’t need words; it just makes you ‘feel’ nature.

Handprints on cave walls are cool!
People painted them thousands of years ago. It’s like they left messages for us, showing how they lived and what mattered to them. History feels real here!

The Purple Mountains at Dawn
This acrylic painting depicts a serene landscape under dawn’s soft light. Discovered in the art class exhibition, its purpose lies in capturing nature’s beauty and evoking reflection. The vibrant colors and dynamic composition immediately drew my attention, symbolizing rebirth and hope. I chose it because its energy encapsulates both individual creativity and communal inspiration.

English Stage Play: Hou Yi Shoots the Sun
Performed by the school drama club during the Cultural Festival, this English adaptation of the Chinese myth captivated audiences with dance, music, and dialogue. Its purpose bridges Eastern legends with global storytelling, proving creativity knows no borders. I selected it for its unique blend of art forms and its ability to engage diverse interests. The play’s success underscores how collaborative effort can transform cultural narratives into universal experiences.
Listen to the presentations. Then vote to decide the best work of art in your school.
Update my to-do list
After lestening to the three presentations, I want to vote for the English play.
Because the actresses and actors in Hou Yi Shoots the Sun were really great at acting. And they also spoke nice English. I enjoyed every minute in their show.
