Presentation
1. What is a syllable?
A syllable usually contains a vowel(元音) sound with or without consonants(辅音).
2. How many syllables may a word have?
A word may have one, two or more syllables.
Words can be divided into syllables. A word may have one, two or more syllables. A syllable usually contains a vowel sound with or without consonants.
Listen to the recording of the words in the table and clap your hands when they each syllable in each word.
How many syllables does “place” have?
It has only one syllable.
How about “box” and “boxes”?
How many syllables does “places” have?
It has two syllables.
Sometimes when we add-(e)s to a word, the word will have an extra syllable.
Read the following plural nouns and pay attention to the last syllable of each word.

When we add –(e)s to a singular noun ending in any of these five sounds /s/,/z/,/ʃ/,/tʃ/and /dʒ/ to make it plural, it will have an extra syllable /ɪz/.
