The next day, Lily found Emma in the classroom. Lily walked up to her, taking a deep breath. “Emma, I’ve thought about what you said. Maybe I’ve been too stuck in my ways. Let’s try your modern piece and see how it goes.” Emma’s eyes lit up. “Really? That’s great! I promise we’ll make it work.” From then on, they practiced with new enthusiasm. Lily gradually got used to the lively rhythm of the modern music, and Emma also learned to appreciate the beauty of classical elements. They blended the two styles, creating a unique and wonderful duet. The long-awaited competition finally arrived. Even though they had made thorough preparations for it, they still failed to achieve their wish.
They didn’t win the first prize, but it didn’t matter. What mattered was that Lily had stepped out of her comfort zone. She was no longer the quiet girl lost in the crowd. Through this experience, she had made a true friend in Emma. The competition had not only brought them closer musically but also personally. Lily realized that adapting to change and embracing new things could lead to amazing discoveries and friendships, which would be deeply rooted in her heart. She was looking forward to more adventures in this new city.

John Cruitt, 62, spent decades tracking down his third-grade teacher.
He wanted to talk with Cecile Doyle about 1958 — the year his mother, who was seriously ill, passed away.
Her death came just days before Christmas. Cruitt had been expecting to go home from school and decorate the Christmas tree.
Doyle tells Cruitt at StoryCorps in Monroe, N. Y. “And you just don’t know how you’re going to go on without that person.”
When Cruitt returned to school, Doyle waited until all of the other children left the room at the end of the day, and told him that she was there if he needed her.
“Then you kissed me on the head,” Cruitt says. “And I felt that things really would be OK.”
“Well, Cruitt, I’m so glad that I could be there with you for that time,” says Doyle, 82.
Decades after his mother’s death, Cruitt began to think more and more of Doyle. He finally wrote a letter:
Dear Mrs. Doyle,
If you are not the Cecile Doyle who taught English at Emerson School in Kearny, N. J., then I’m embarrassed, and you can neglect the letter. My name is John Cruitt, and I was in your third-grade class during the 1958-1959 school year. Two days before Christmas, my mother passed away, and you told me that you were there if I needed you. I hope life has been as kind to you as you were to me.
God bless you.
John Cruitt
Doyle says his letter, which arrived in February, could not have come at a better time. Her husband, who passed away this August, was struggling with Parkinson’s disease.
“Well the funny thing is, when I finally wrote to you again after 54 years, I typed the letter — I was afraid my penmanship wasn’t going to meet your standards,” Cruitt says as Doyle laughs.
“John, what can I say — I’m just glad that we made a difference in each other’s life.”
21.Before Cruitt wrote the letter, he ________.
A.knew Doyle’s husband had passed away
B.believed Doyle was leading a happy life
C.considered it embarrassing to write to Doyle
D.was unsure whether Doyle could receive the letter
22.Doyle believed the letter ________.
A.was a gift coming late
B.came at just the right time
C.lifted her confidence greatly
D.served as a reminder of her husband
23.The underlined word “penmanship” probably means “________”.
A.pen repairer B.pen friend C.handwriting D.biography
Kris Bowers, a musician and award-winning film composer, grew up playing the piano through Los Angeles Unified’s music program. But it was only a few years ago that he learned about the people who cared for the instruments that brought him — and so many other students — joy and emotional support over the years.
The documentary The Last Repair Shop, co-directed by Bowers, puts the spotlight on those technicians who regularly repair more than 130,000 student instruments for free — work that has been taking place in a downtown L.A.storehouse since 1959.
For Bowers, making the film was a full circle moment. He learned about the work of Steve Bagmanyan, a technician who tuned the pianos in Bowers’s primary and middle schools. “I was able to thank someone who had a hand in my progress as a musician,” Bowers says.
Besides Bagmanyan, who is one of four workers, each personal story intersects (交织) with a piece of L.A.and maybe even United States history. Dana Atkinson, who works in the strings division, shares his story. Paty Moreno, the only woman technician in the shop, talks about her journey moving to the U.S. from Mexico and raising her children here — her job in the repair shop helped her maintain some stability, she says. Duane Michaels fixes the woodwind instruments and talks about his time on tour with the great rock singer Elvis in the past.
Directing the documentary gave Bowers a chance to mix his love for music and his city. “Having that deep love for this city and discovering this music repair shop and this program make me extremely proud of the city,” Bowers says.
The film has already brought attention to the repair shop. There is now a $15 million fundraising effort set up by the Education Foundation to help keep the program running and invest in future instrument technicians.
24.What does The Last Repair Shop focus on?
A.The development of a repair shop.
B.The stories of instrument technicians.
C.Bowers’s journey to become a musician.
D.Bowers’s struggle to support piano players.
25.Why was Steve Bagmanyan included in the film?
A.He instructed Bowers to be a composer.
B.He played a role in Bowers’s musical career.
C.He was a professional instrument repairman.
D.He had an influence on Bowers academically.
26.What does Bowers think of the experience of directing the documentary?
A.Demanding. B.Challenging. C.Promising. D.Rewarding.
27.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To honor a famous director. B.To advertise a repair shop.
C.To introduce a documentary. D.To share a music program.

How good are you at maths? Some people love the challenge of algebra (代数) or enjoy working out number puzzles. Maths is all around us, from working out how to split the bill after a meal to calculating your household bills. But many people dread the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures, and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It can seem depressing, but this “maths anxiety” is perfectly normal, and you’re definitely not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily show our ability.
Research traces maths anxiety back to school experiences. Nervous teachers may unintentionally pass their fears to students, and girls are particularly vulnerable. Data from 34 countries reveals striking numbers: 31% of teenagers feel nervous about solving problems, 33% stress over homework, and nearly 60% fear difficult classes. Shulamit Kahn, a Boston University expert, argues that positive role models — especially female teachers — are critical to building confidence in young learners.
Writing for BBC Future, David Robson says, “It’s not clear why maths causes so much fear compared to geography. But the fact that there’s only one correct answer — there’s no room for bluffing — might make you more worried about under-performing.” And once we suppose we’re not a “maths person”, we avoid solving things that we probably could do.
Psychologists have been trying to work out why maths can bring us out in a sweat. That seed of fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that expressing your fears can loosen their hold on you and recommend children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat. In fact, we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.
28.What does the author think of “maths anxiety”?
A.It doesn’t mean poor ability. B.It affects almost everyone from birth.
C.It naturally disappears with age. D.It only troubles school children.
29.What does “there’s no room for bluffing” mean about maths problems?
A.They require creative thinking. B.They can be understood differently.
C.They demand exact answers. D.They include many maths steps.
30.How do psychologists advise reducing maths anxiety?
A.Ignore it and move on to harder problems. B.Adjust exams to lower stress for students.
C.Voice your worries and try again. D.Replace daily maths with puzzle games.
31.What is the best title for the passage?
A.How Do We Learn Maths Effectively? B.Is Maths Worth Learning?
C.Are Boys Better at Maths than Girls? D.Should We Fear Maths?

By creating videos, civil servant Zhu Ying finds a unique way to better serve the people
Zhu Ying, 32, works as an administrator at the Beijing Xicheng District Administration for Market Regulation On the morning of April 24 at her workplace, she addressed the concerns of Li Fei (not his real name), who had come to apply for a business license. But Li’s paperwork had some problems. Zhu patiently explained the regulations and carefully reviewed Li’s documents to help him apply smoothly next time.
As a civil servant, Zhu handles enterprise registrations and licenses. Awarded the Youth Star for Xicheng District in 2022, she emphasizes staying up to date on policies. “These years, the government has introduced policies to optimize (优化) the business environment. We need to keep learning to ensure we can accurately respond to applicants’ inquiries (询问),” said Zhu.
Although many people believe that a civil servant’s job is “stable”, Zhu stresses continuous self-improvement to provide better service. For example, recognizing public confusion about policies, in 2021 she led a team to start “Xiaoying’s Business Channel”, creating and publishing short videos. With 120 episodes and nearly 30 million views, including 5 million views for “Policies for Business Environment Optimization 5.0 in Beijing City”, the series explains policies to the public in an easy-to-understand way. Zhu’s recent project has involved visiting 100 enterprises to make 100 videos, with one highlighting the growth story of the established brand Ruifuxiang for World Intellectual Property Day.
“The success of ‘Xiaoying’s Business Channel’ is credited to the administration’s support for young staff members’ growth,” Zhu said. The six-person video-making team has an average age of 28 years. Li Zhicheng, director of the administration, noted, “We encourage bold thinking and new ideas among young staff members to foster innovation and progress.”
With 10 years of civil service work under her belt, Zhu feels a deep sense of duty, especially when wearing her uniform. When asked about taking on the additional work to create videos, she said, “I understand the challenges of grassroots (基层的) work. Creating videos allows me to have face-to-face interactions with enterprises and applicants. This way, I can grasp their needs more clearly and serve them better.”
With the civil servant exam gaining popularity, Zhu’s message is clear: “It’s not an easy job, but if you’re committed to it, you’ll find daily happiness in your work.”
HELPFUL majors for entering the civil service
According to Zhu Ying, certain majors are particularly helpful for those aiming to pass the civil service exam. But in fact, students from almost all majors can apply for civil service positions as long as they meet the relevant recruitment criteria
●Political science and public administration: These majors cover knowledge in political theory, administrative management (行政管理) and public policy, providing a solid foundation for civil service positions.
●Law: Law students are equipped with legal knowledge as well as analytical (分析的) and problem-solving skills, making them suitable for legal-related positions.
●Economics: Economics majors cover economic theory, macroeconomic policies and market economy operations, preparing students for economic management positions.
●Human resource management: This major involves studying organizational behavior, recruitment and training, helping students develop the management and organizational skills necessary for civil service work.
32.What does Zhu Ying believe is crucial as a civil servant?
A.Following regulations.
B.Learning continuously.
C.Increasing work efficiency.
D.Maintaining job stability.
33.Why did Zhu start “Xiaoying’s Business Channel”?
A.To fulfill administrative requirements.
B.To engage with a broader audience.
C.To promote government achievements.
D.To make complex policies more accessible.
34.How does Zhu view the work of creating videos?
A.As a chance for personal gain.
B.As a distraction from her duties.
C.As a tool to improve her service.
D.As a challenging and demanding task.
35.Which of the following best describes Zhu, according to the text?
A.Dedicated and innovative.
B.Ambitious and modest.
C.Cooperative and resourceful.
D.Optimistic and confident.

How to be a Better Tourist While Abroad
If you want to be a better traveler, here are some tips.
Localize your experience. Support local, small, and family-run businesses. Think of the delicious foods, hand-made goods, and experiences that will keep your body dancing for more. Go on free walking trips led by locals who will teach you about history, culture, and all the must-do things in the area. 36 Whether you’re chatting with other travelers or locals around the tour, start a conversation and maybe you’ll end up with some new friends.
Select public transportation. Although sometimes it may seem less convenient, choosing public transportation gives you closer access to the local ways of living, seeing your host community from different views, and possibly, reducing your carbon footprint. 37
38 When thinking about how to be a good traveler, an easy way to fit into the local community is to learn the customs and traditions and experience the richness of life in this place which is new for you. Let your life be different here than it is at home.
Learn the language. Even if you don’t speak the local language fluently before you arrive, it’s better to at least learn some basic phrases. Put in the good effort, even if you don’t speak the language perfectly. 39 By stepping into a new language in a new location, you can step into a new version of yourself-which is pretty cool when you think about it.
Take part in experiential learning. By doing research before you travel abroad, you will be getting yourself ready for some amazing learning chances. Everyone you meet has knowledge and real-life experiences that you can learn from. Everything you do or come across is an opportunity to learn and grow. 40
A.Do as the locals do.
B.Take things as they come.
C.This can also be an opportunity to meet people.
D.It may even become a penny saver in the long run.
E.You can record and reflect on your language learning.
F.You should keep your mind, heart, and eyes open for new chances.
G.Remind yourself that making mistakes is part of learning a language.

0How to ‘Shift’ Big Feelings
Emotions are a fundamental part of what makes us human. The current wisdom in therapy (心理治疗) and on social media is that we should face negative emotions head on — and that if we don’t, they will go bad inside of us. There’s no doubt that 56 (cope) with stressful situations through long-term avoidance is harmful and can lead to more psychological distress, but not all avoidance is bad.
Sometimes, it’s best not to choose between approaching or avoiding, but to shift between 57 two intentionally. Avoidance can allow the intensity of a negative experience 58 (decrease). It can also provide distance 59 helps us see the experience from a broader perspective.
How can you figure out whether to avoid or to face up to your feelings? Dr. Kross, an emotion researcher, suggested asking yourself, “Is 60 I’m doing making me feel better about the problem in front of me? Is this issue still a concern 61 I take some time away from it?”
If you find that shifting your focus brings you relief and your concerns don’t resurface down the road, that 62 (count) as working. You might say something regrettable at a party, for instance, but instead of worrying about it, you distract yourself by watching funny videos that night.
When we use the word “you,” it is almost only to refer to other people, Dr. Kross said. But when you use it on yourself, it’s a strategy 63 (know) as distanced self-talk, which can be a powerful way to regulate negative emotions. So instead of saying “I am stressed out,” which may cause your heart to race, tell yourself “ 64 are stressed out.” This casts you 65 the role of “someone else,” and may help you feel more sympathy and understand others’ feelings.

Lily moved from a small coastal town to a busy city just two weeks before school started. The towering buildings and endless traffic were totally different from the sunsets on the beach she had always known. On her first day at Oakwood High, she felt like an outsider—a quiet girl lost in a sea of joyful strangers.
Her classmates were friendly but distant. Everyone seemed to have their own groups, their own jokes, and their own rhythm (节奏). Lily’s only comfort was her violin, the one thing that reminded her of home. She’d practice it every evening, letting the music carry her back to the sound of waves and the smell of salt.
One day, her music teacher announced a duet (二重奏) competition. Lily was matched with Emma, the most outgoing girl in class. She wore bright colors, laughed loudly, and always had a group around her. Lily, on the other hand, preferred staying alone. When she heard the news, her heart sank. She had hoped to perform alone — to hide in the safety of her own notes.
Their first practice was a disaster. Emma wanted to play a modern piece, full of energy, while Lily insisted on something classical and familiar.
“Why can’t we try something new?” Emma asked, tapping her foot impatiently.
“Because I’m not used to it,” Lily replied softly. “I like knowing what comes next.” “But music isn’t about repeating the same old patterns (模式). It’s about feeling!” Emma stressed.
They couldn’t agree. The more Emma pushed, the more Lily withdrew (退缩). After three unsuccessful rehearsals (排练), Emma sighed in frustration. “You know, if you keep hiding in your shell, you’ll never really belong here.” The words stung. Lily packed her violin without a word and left. That evening, she didn’t practice but thought about Emma’s words. Was she really hiding? Was she so afraid of change that she’d rather be alone than adapt?
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
The next day, Lily found Emma in the classroom

I've only started this channel this week, so i'm sort of nervous in front of the camera. Anyway, I want to share with you everything I know about health today. I want to talk to you about how to feel Younger. Hi, i'm in my mid forties, yet I feel as energetic as I did when I was eighteen. So what is my secret? It's not really a secret. It's a combination of exercise, healthy eating and rest. Sleep is the most important aspect of all of this. I imagine many of you get around six hours of sleep at night. You might stay up, play, watching T, V, playing video games or just browsing your phone. What i'd suggest is setting an alarm an hour before you go to bed. That alarm is to remind you to stop looking at electronic screens. They produce blue light, which can prevent you from going to sleep. I would also suggest not eating or drinking anything two hours before bedtime. If you are restless, a glass of milk can help to settle you, but no tea or coffee as they will keep you awake. Lastly, starts your day on a positive note. With half an hour of exercise, IT may not seem like a lot, but over time, IT will dramatically improve your health. Now, if you have any questions, just type them on the screen. Hello, everyone, welcome. I've only started this channel this week, so i'm sort of nervous in front of the camera.

D

How to ‘Shift’ Big Feelings

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
The next day, Lily found Emma in the classroom

M: Hello everyone, welcome! I’ve only started this channel this week, so I’m sort of nervous in front of the camera. Anyway, I want to share with you everything I know about health. Today I want to talk to you about how to feel younger. I am in my Mid-forties, yet I feel as energetic as I did when I was eighteen. So what is my secret? It’s not really a secret, it’s a combination of exercise, healthy eating and rest. Sleep is the most important aspect of all of this. I imagine many of you get around six hours of sleep a night. You might stay up late watching TV, playing video games or just browsing your phone. What I’d suggest is setting an alarm an hour before you go to bed. Lastly, start your day on a positive note with half an hour of exercise. It may not seem like a lot, but over time it will dramatically improve your health. Now if you have any questions, just type them on the screen.

M: Hi Paula, I’ve been doing well. I’m working in a bank in the administrative area and how are you? I heard you’ve been to another country. Tell me about it.
W: Yes, I just came back from South Africa. I was there volunteering at a nature preserve. The project I worked on was about wildlife protection. I collected relevant information on lions, elephants and other animals.
M: That sounds great. You must have learned a lot.
W: Yes, Mark. When I was there, I had the opportunity to see the animals in their natural habitat. I tracked and recorded their movements, behaviour and ecological impacts on the species. I’ve learned a lot. It is meaningful.

Mount Ebenezer is in the center of Australia, but not many people live in the center. There are no schools with desks and blackboards and no teachers in the center. School is a room at home with a two-way radio. The teacher also has a two-way radio. Every morning, she calls each student on the radio. When all the students answer, the lessons begin. Think of your teacher, 300 miles away.
A
John Cruitt, 62, spent decades tracking down his third-grade teacher.
根据John Cruitt写信的第一句“If you are not the Cecile Doyle who taught English at Emerson School in Kearny, N. J., then I’m embarrassed, and you can neglect the letter. (如果你不是在新泽西州科尔尼的爱默生学校教英语的Cecile Doyle,那么我很尴尬,你可以忽略这封信。) ”可推知John Cruitt写信的时候不确定Doyle是否能收到这封信,故选D。
22.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Doyle says his letter, which arrived in February, could not have come at a better time. (Doyle说,他的这封信是在2月份收到的,来得正是时候。)”可知Doyle相信这封信来的正是时候,故选B。
23.词义猜测题。根据上文“Well the funny thing is, when I finally wrote to you again after 54 years, I typed the letter (好吧,有趣的是,当我54年后终于再次给你写信时,我把信打了出来)”可推断出下文意思是“我担心我的书写达不到你的标准”所以penmanship意思是“书写”,和handwriting同义,故选C。
B
根据第二段中“The documentary The Last Repair Shop, co-directed by Bowers, puts the spotlight on those technicians who regularly repair more than 130,000 student instruments for free — work that has been taking place in a downtown L.A. storehouse since 1959. (由鲍尔斯联合执导的纪录片《最后的修理店》将镜头对准这些技术人员——自1959年以来,他们一直在洛杉矶市中心的一间仓库里免费维修超过13万件学生乐器。)”可知,纪录片《最后的维修店》聚焦于那些免费为学生修理乐器的技术人员。故选B项。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段中“He learned about the work of Steve Bagmanyan, a technician who tuned the pianos in Bowers’s primary and middle schools. ‘I was able to thank someone who had a hand in my progress as a musician,’ Bowers says. (他了解到了Steve Bagmanyan的工作——这位技师曾为Bowers的小学和中学钢琴调音。“我终于能感谢这位在我音乐成长路上伸出援手的人。”)”可知,Steve Bagmanyan是Bowers小学和中学调试钢琴的技术人员,对他的音乐生涯产生了影响,因此被包括在电影中。故选B项。
26.推理判断题。根据第五段中“Directing the documentary gave Bowers a chance to mix his love for music and his city. (导演这部纪录片让鲍尔斯有机会将他对音乐的热爱与他的城市结合起来。)”可知,Bowers认为执导这部纪录片将他对音乐和城市的热爱融合在一起,是一次有意义的经历。故选D项。
27.推理判断题。根据第二段“The documentary The Last Repair Shop, co-directed by Bowers, puts the spotlight on those technicians who regularly repair more than 130,000 student instruments for free — work that has been taking place in a downtown L. A. storehouse since1959. (由鲍尔斯联合执导的纪录片《最后的修理店》将镜头对准这些技师——自1959年以来,他们一直在洛杉矶市中心的一间仓库里免费维修超过13万件学生乐器。)”和下文内容可知,本文主要介绍了一部由Kris Bowers联合执导的纪录片《最后的修理店》,这部纪录片关注那些为学生免费修理乐器的技术人员。因此,本文的目的是介绍一部纪录片。故选C项。

【答案】28.A 29.C 30.C 31.D
根据第一段“It can seem depressing, but this “maths anxiety” is perfectly normal, and you’re definitely not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily show our ability. (这可能看起来令人沮丧,但这种“数学焦虑”是完全正常的,绝对不是你一个人这样。无论如何,我们的担忧和恐惧并不一定表明我们的能力。)”可知,作者认为人们对数学的恐惧焦虑并不能反映出他们的能力。故选A项。
根据最后一段“Psychologists have been trying to work out why maths can bring us out in a sweat. That seed of fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that expressing your fears can loosen their hold on you and recommend children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat. In fact, we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance. (心理学家正探究为何数学让人冒汗。恐惧种子来源多,但把焦虑说出来能削弱它;应把数学测试视为挑战而非威胁。让我们对数学多一点积极,再给它一次机会。)”可知,心理学家建议勇敢说出自己对数学的担忧并保持积极的态度, 再试一次,以此来减少对数学的焦虑。C选项中的voice与express, try again与give it a second chance近义表达。故选C项。
根据第一段“But many people dread the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures, and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It can seem depressing, but this “maths anxiety” is perfectly normal, and you’re definitely not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily show our ability. (但许多人害怕面对数字的时刻,感到真正的担忧和困惑。这可能看起来令人沮丧,但这种“数学焦虑”是完全正常的,你绝对不是一个人。无论如何,我们的担忧和恐惧并不一定表明我们的能力。)”并通读全文可知,文章主要介绍了数学焦虑这一现象及成因,以及心理学家对于如何减少数学焦虑的建议, 整体围绕是否应该害怕数学展开讨论。故选D项。

How to ‘Shift’ Big Feelings
56.coping/to cope 57.the/these 58.to decrease 59.that/which 60.what 61.after/when/if 62.counts/is counted 63.known 64.you 65.in/into
allow sb./sth. to do sth. 故填to decrease。
时/如果”,空格处可用after/when引导时间状语从句,或if引导条件状语从句,故填after/when/if。
由find可知,句子时态用一般现在时,sth. count as/sth. be counted as是固定短语,意为“某物可以算作/某物被认为是”,that作主语谓语动词用单数,因此空格处是counts/is counted。故填counts/is counted。
cast sb. in/into the role of是固定短语,意为“使某人扮演……的角色”,因此空格处是介词in/into。故填in/into。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
The next day, Lily found Emma in the classroom
