A You really can make free phone calls using the Internet. Google Meet Google Meet is an app-to-app calling service that works across desktop and mobile platforms. Video meetings are encrypted (加密), it also supports audio calls, and you can form massive group calls with up to 100 people. What’s more appealing is that Google Meet display s real-time captions (字幕) as the other person is speaking. Signal Signal lets you send and receive texts, make voice and video calls (including group calls), and share your location and files. It was developed with a focus on privacy and security; it uses end-to-end encryption to protect your messages and calls, so only you and the recipient can see or hear what you’re exchanging. Google Voice Google Voice is one of the best ways to make a call over the Internet. You get a real phone number, so you can make free calls to an actual phone number. Free calls you make with Google Voice must be to numbers in the United States or Canada, and they’re limited to three hours. However, you can continue to make a free call to the same number over and over again. WhatsApp Meta-owned WhatsApp is a popular texting app with hundreds of millions of users. However, you can also call your WhatsApp friends right from the app using only your Internet connection. You just need to confirm your phone number to get started. Once you’re using the app, you can start a new conversation to clearly see which of your contacts are also using WhatsApp, and then you can call them for free no matter where in the world they’re located. Group calls can include as many as 32 people. 1. What is a feature of Google Meet? A. You can see what the speaker says. B. It can be used for free anywhere in the world. C. No password is needed to attend online meetings. D. Over 100 people can attend online meetings meantime. 2. Which of the following apps is limited to certain areas? A. Google Meet. B. Signal. C. Google Voice. D. WhatsApp. 3. In what section of a newspaper will the text probably appear? A. Health. B. Environment. C. Education. D. Technology. B In Antarctica, my team really wanted to capture the moment when emperor penguin (企鹅) chicks jump into the ocean for their first swim. We had been in Antarctica for two months before it was time for these chicks to fledge. Fledging is when birds grow feathers that help them fly or, in the case of penguins, swim. Mom and Dad have headed out to sea for good, and the five-month-old chicks are realizing their parents aren’t coming back: They must hunt for themselves. So these penguin “teenagers” form little groups and start waddling (摇摆) toward the sea together. The young penguins look messy as they shed the soft feathers that keep them warm and grow out their adult swimming feathers. Each has a unique boy-band-style haircut. The penguins must walk about 15 miles from the home atop an enormous ice shelf to reach the water’s edge. We follow the birds from afar on snowmobiles. They crowd together at the end of the path and stare down like, “what’s that?” They’ve never seen the ocean before! To my amazement, I see several hundred chicks gather at the edge of a 50-foot ice cliff! They stand together for four hours, staring at the rough water below. Finally one chick steps in front of the others, waddles to the edge of the cliff and dives off the side. I watch in fear, afraid the bird won’t resurface in the water after the long fall. But then it makes it, back up! It swims farther out to sea, never looking back. At first the other penguins are like “Oh my gosh, what did Steve just do?” But then they realize it’s safe to jump. They begin to pour off the cliff, several little soft balls at a time. Some jump off stylishly, and others slip and fall backward. Some even flap their wings as if they’ll fly. This dive is their entrance into adulthood. They’ll swim out to sea and won’t return to the home for several years. How lucky we are to see this huge moment in their lives. 4. What does fledging mean for penguins? A. They’ll fly like other birds. B. They’ll look for their parents. C. They’ll look cooler than ever. D. They’ll live an independent life. 5. How does the author feel about the young penguins at the cliff? A. Frightened. B. Concerned. C. Exited. D. Confused. 6. Who does “Steve” in the last paragraph refer to? A. The father penguin. B. The author. C. The first penguin to dive. D. The author’s teammate. 7. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. Dive into Adulthood B. Legends of Penguins C. Scenery in Antarctica D. Adventures in Antarctica C Jammed roads, loud noises, suffocating (令人窒息的) smog. For some people, living in the city can be stressful. But a growing body of research shows some city birds can be more aggressive than their rural twins, suggesting they too feel the pressures of city life. Generally, animals that live in cities tend to be bolder and more aggressive — both characteristics that enable them to survive in such complex habitats. “Individuals that can’t deal with constant disturbance, such as noise, people, cars, etc., would be unlikely to thrive in an urban habitat,” says Jeremy Hyman, a professor and department chair of biology at Western Carolina University. Some birds may become more aggressive because cities are rich in food sources — and so there’s strong competition to establish a foothold. “Only the most aggressive males can manage to hold a territory in this place where lots and lots of birds would like to have a territory” says Hyman. But food scarcity may also make some urban species more aggressive, and so birds have to fight an awful lot in order to maintain a large enough territory to get the resources that they need. High levels of stress caused by noise and other factors might also play a role in making birds more aggressive, notes Hyman. In some cases, aggression seems to be “a worthwhile cost,” says Sarah Foltz, a behavioral ecologist at Radford University. However, a big unanswered question is whether birds learn to be aggressive during their lifetime. But what scientists do know is that some birds can be highly adaptable. “Aggression definitely has a genetic component to it,” says Foltz. “But also, we know that when we change environmental factors, birds change their aggression.” Overall, Foltz says scientists are still trying to understand just how much urban density (密度) different species can tolerate and which characteristics of an urban environment influence aggressiveness the most. “We’ve got all these little pieces,” she says, “But it’s still coming to gather to make a bigger picture, so it’s sort of an unfinished puzzle.” 8. Why are birds in the city more aggressive? A. They need to adapt the environment. B. They are annoyed by city’s disturbance. C. They have such characteristics in the rural. D. They hate people in the city. 9. What can be inferred from Hyman’s statements? A. Birds in the urban will die out. B. Male birds will occupy all the urban habitats. C. Conflict will always exist despite sufficient food. D. Stress plays a more critical role in bird’s aggressiveness. 10. What plays a role in birds’ aggression? A. Gene and environment. B. Evolution and structure. C. Body and environment. D. Gene and structure. 11. What does Foltz think of the research? A. Promising B. Common C. Critical D. Meaningless D A new study published in the Journal of Remote Sensing has revealed that current satellite systems underestimate total CO2 emissions (排放) from U.S. thermal power plants (热电站) by 70% (±12%). The research, led by scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, highlights remote sensing technology, the core technology of current satellite systems, has important gaps, including poor spatial resolution, limited precision, and infrequent revisit cycles. It also suggests that next-generation satellites — designed with a resolution of 0.5km, a precision of at least 0.7 ppm, and daily monitoring capabilities — could reduce errors to below 20%. This advancement would significantly enhance global carbon accountability. Thermal power generation accounted for 46% of the global increase in CO2 emissions in 2021 emphasizing its critical role in climate action. Current satellites, including NASA’s OCO-2 and OCO-3, have difficulty detecting small facilities, which make up 94% of coal-fired power plants and 97% of gas-fueled plants. The study analyzed data from 1,060 U.S. power plants using 2021 satellite data and found that existing systems recorded only 29% (±12%) of total emissions, mainly from larger facilities. The researchers used Gaussian plume models and high-resolution ERA5-Land meteorological (气象的) data to account for time variability in plant operations and atmospheric disturbance, thus bettering emission estimates. The study also assessed approaching missions like the European Union’s Copernicus Anthropogenic CO2 Monitoring Mission (CO2M), set to launch in 2025 with 0.7 ppm precision, 4 km2 resolution, and 5-day revisit gaps, as well as China’s TanSat-2, which is designed for 1 ppm precision and daily global coverage. Through considerable tools and profound research, these new systems could detect 52% and 44% of total U.S. power plant emissions, respectively, marking a significant improvement over current capabilities. Accurate emission lists are vital for the Paris Agreement’s Global Stocktake, which measures progress toward limiting global warming to 1.5°C. “Current satellites provide unreliable data, weakening climate commitments,” stated Dr. Cheng Tianhai, the study’s corresponding author. “Next-generation systems could fill these gaps, making emissions measurable and actionable.” 12. Which writing technique does paragraph 1 skip? A. Offering statistics. B. Making contrasts. C. Giving a definition. D. Quoting a study. 13. What causes inaccurate CO2 emission data? A. Recording methods are outdated. B. Monitoring facilities are lacking. C. It is difficult to track small devices. D. It is hard to detect large equipment. 14. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. The methods of precise monitoring. B. The advances in emission detection. C. The increases in China’s CO2 emissions. D. The mechanisms of emission monitoring. 15. Which words can best describe future satellite systems? A. Precise and reliable. B. Adaptive and portable. C. AI-powered and super-fast. D. Predictive and data-based. 二、七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It’s no secret that the Internet is home to some illegal characters. ____16____ Instead, stay mindful and take a look at these tips for Internet safety. ____17____ When it comes to online safety, it goes without saying that you should never share your passwords or banking information.
