It has been seven months since Sierra Roberts set sail—or actually boarded a plane—for a year-long adventure in the small Colombian town of Santa Rosa de Cabal in South America. Her travels are part of the Rotary Youth Exchange, available to high school students interested in living and studying abroad for one year.
Santa Rosa is known for its rich agriculture. But Colombia wasn’t Roberts’ first preference for the exchange program. “I’ve always been interested in foreign cultures, seeing new things and just learning,” Roberts said. “I was always kind of drawn to the idea of studying abroad. I actually wanted to go to Spain.”
As soon as Roberts arrived in Colombia in August, her preconceptions of the South American country quickly changed. Roberts said Colombia was nothing like what she had expected, making the first few months a difficult adjustment.
In an Oct. 21 blog post, Roberts wrote, “I was letting my emotions and thoughts run me over. I realized that I couldn’t expect this country, this town, these people to change to accommodate me and fix my homesickness—that was simply silly and went against what exchange was really about.”
It was at that moment that Roberts said everything around her changed. She started to grasp the language, allowing her to better communicate with her host family and peers and even leading her to make more friends. She even started dreaming in the language.
“I feel more grounded here now,” said Roberts, who would fly back to Indiana in mid-June. When she returned, she would present her experience to local Rotary clubs.
( )4. Why did Sierra Roberts go to Santa Rosa?
A. To go sightseeing. B. To pursue a career in agriculture.
C. To take an adventure. D. To study as an exchange student.
( )5. What does the underlined word “preconceptions” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Worries. B. Expectations. C. Opportunities. D. Memories.
( )6. How did Roberts feel when she arrived in Colombia at first?
A. Excited. B. Satisfied. C. Disappointed. D. Curious.
( )7. What can we infer about Sierra Roberts?
A. She has a positive attitude to life. B. She is good with different people.
C. She regrets coming to Santa Rosa. D. She is good at teaching languages.

The street cleaner was sitting at a small table outside Leadenhall Market in London. His eyes were fixed on a large cup of tea in front of him. I’d first met the old man the week before.
“Back again?” he asked, not looking at me as I took a seat. “Yes, just for a quick visit,” I replied. For a few moments, we sat in silence. “The epidemic is destroying everything,” he said. I nodded. “Oh well, better soldier on(坚持下去).” Then he stood up and disappeared into the market. Somehow his words cheered me up.
It was a very British conversation. Understated(轻描淡写的), good-humoured, light on the emotions—this was British stoicism. Stoicism, which has its roots in Ancient Greece, started as a philosophy of understanding pain and hardship and being able to deal with them without complaint.
Visitors to the UK will notice that our dictionary comes with a wonderfully wide variety of phrases that show the philosophy, such as “muddle through” “plug away” “chin up” and “soldier on”, to name but a few. Facing hardship with one’s head held high is a typical image of British people.
The Blitz, in which cities across the nation were bombed(轰炸) between 1940 and 1941, is another excellent example. At the darkest times, Britain stood strong, and courageously stood up to the enemy.
The Queen addressed the nation and reminded us that the qualities of self-discipline(自律) and quiet good-humoured determination still characterize this country. We were once again asked to lift our Blitz Spirit for the good of the nation.
As I left Leadenhall Market, I met two men and a woman outside a small flower shop, one of the few shops open. Our conversation quickly turned to the epidemic. The closed shops lining the quiet streets reminded us of fears for the future. “We’ve just got to soldier on, haven’t we?” the woman said. We nodded seriously, and stoically.
( )8. What can we say about the cleaner?
A. He was the author’s old friend.
B. He worked with the author in the same market.
C. His words were an encouragement to the author.
D. His life was completely changed because of the author.
( )9. What do the listed phrases in Paragraph 4 have in common?
A. They are used to make complaints. B. They are examples of British stoicism.
C. They are borrowed from Ancient Greece. D. They are old-fashioned expressions to the young.
( )10. What do we know about the Blitz Spirit?
A. It goes against the philosophy of stoicism.
B. It means thinking differently to be a winner.
C. It first appeared in a speech given by the Queen.
D. It once worked as real support to the British people.
( )11. What did the author think of the epidemic according to the last paragraph?
A. It would create some opportunities. B. It would challenge the Blitz Spirit.
C. It wouldn’t make British people give in. D. It wouldn’t last for a long time.
D
Cycling for charity is a good way to raise money for worthy causes. There are several approaches to getting started.
Popular international social websites have cycling-for-charity pages where it is possible to find upcoming events and sponsors(赞助商). Many international organizations that organize regular cycling events for charity can also be located online. An example of this is Best Buddies International, founded in 1989 and existing in many countries around the world. Best Buddies International sponsors cycling events to raise money for people with developmental disabilities.
Research organizations mainly dedicated to curing diseases and groups like the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in the US, with similar MS associations in Canada and Australia, arrange cycling-for-charity events on a frequent basis. For other common diseases and medical conditions, such as heart disease, Parkinson’s and cancer, there are also national and international organizations that regularly arrange cycling-for-charity events. Social movement nonprofits are also involved in cycling for charity, centred around such issues as poverty and regional disasters, like earthquakes and hurricanes, which inspire cycling fundraisers around the globe.
Local community groups are another avenue towards forming a cycling group and sponsoring charity rides and charity races. Bicycle clubs and retailers(零售商) are often connected with community outreach groups that arrange such events, and are a good source of information on how to get involved in one. Some of these groups go beyond traditional street cycling and sponsor cross-country trail courses. Indoor cycling-for-charity events have also become popular in areas where the weather and season or the urban environment may not be suitable for outdoor cycling activities.
Arranging your own cycling-for-charity event is also a possibility. Finding ways to publicize the event and gain sponsors can be done through various local or regional cycling clubs, employers, local churches, and other groups interested in promoting charitable activities.
( )12. Which of the following organizes cycling events for the disabled?
A. A bicycle club. B. A local community group.
C. Best Buddies International. D. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
( )13. What is the main function of the research organizations?
A. To study how to treat diseases. B. To spread information on how to face diseases.
C. To publicize the benefits of cycling. D. To inspire the fundraisers globally.
( )14. Why do some areas choose indoor cycling for charity?
A. For the public’s preference. B. To provide cycling courses.
C. To attract more participants. D. For unfavorable conditions.
( )15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How can I start cycling for charity? B. How can I avoid being hurt during cycling?
C. Why must I advocate charity events? D. What should I do for a proper cycling event?

You see people making big life changes. For example, they go to medical school at 40 just because they couldn’t imagine being an accountant(会计师) for 20 more years. It seems magical, like one day they just decide to make it happen. For some people, it might work that way. 16 In truth, it takes years of thinking and planning. I’ve figured out how to streamline(使效率更高) things a bit. You may want to try it yourself.
First, accept the uncertainty of life. As much as we don’t like to admit it, life is uncertain. 17 If you doubt me, go back 10 years and ask yourself where you thought you’d be now. I doubt it looks exactly like you planned.
Second, be open to possibilities. Often, we know we want to do something, but we don’t know what it is. Explore a bit. Brainstorm. 18
Third, once you decide on something, it’s time to plan a bit. 19 As you meet with different difficulties, make sure you spend time questioning your assumptions(假设). Maybe something you always considered true is nothing more than someone else’s opinion.
Finally, as paths open, head down them. Don’t worry if you experience false starts. 20 Almost all of the stories readers shared with me about doing life-changing things involved changing plans, disappointment and lots of hard work. But in the end, it was worth it.
A. That might seem a bit obvious.
B. At this point, difficulties start to show up.
C. We never know exactly where it will take us.
D. It stops you from just making big life changes.
E. However, most of the time, it’s much less magical.
F. Allow things to come up and be open to new ideas.
G. There will be plenty of those, and you may only need a quick course correction.
