You may have played the game of ping-pong. Or you may have seen other people play the game. But did you ever wonder how it got its name? Or did you wonder when people started playing ping-pong?
Ping-pong is the sound you hear when the small plastic ball bounces (反弹) on the table. It was first called “table tennis”. That is because ping-pong is very much like the game of tennis. But ping-pong is not played on a court (球场). It is played on a nine-foot-long and five-foot-wide table.
Before people played ping-pong, the game of tennis was very popular. The game of tennis was played outdoors. No one knows who played the first game of table tennis. It’s fun to think about what may have happened. Maybe a group of friends were stuck inside on a rainy day. Maybe they wished they could play tennis. They might have had a large table and put a net across the table. Maybe they used their tennis rackets to hit the ball and play. Maybe they invented the new game of table tennis.
Ping-pong tables look a lot like tennis courts (球场). They have white lines painted on them. They have a net like a tennis court. The net goes across the middle of the table. Like tennis players, ping-pong players try to hit a ball over the net. In tennis, players use rackets with strings. In ping-pong, players use small, wooden paddles (球拍) with rubber pads (橡胶垫).
People all over the world love the game of ping-pong. Children and grown-ups play. Some people join teams to play. It’s still a fun indoor sport. Are you ready for an exciting game of ping-pong? Get a friend. Get the paddles. Get the ball. Hit the ball. Fast. Ping-pong, ping-pong.

Nowadays, more and more people like ready-to-cook meals (预制菜). Ready-to-cook meals are everywhere—on supermarket shelves, in online grocery orders, and even in convenience stores. What are they? They are pre-made dishes. Workers wash, cut and cook the food first. Then people buy them and only need to heat or cook a little to eat.
Why are ready-to-cook meals popular? First, people are busy. Many parents work long hours. They don’t have much time to cook. Ready-to-cook meals save time. Second, they are easy to make. Even students can heat them for a quick dinner. Third, there are many kinds, like braised pork (红烧肉) and kung pao chicken.
But some people worry about them. They think the meals have too many additives (添加剂). Others say they lose nutrients (营养), like vitamins. But scientists say, if the additives meet the rules, they are safe. And choosing meals that go bad fast is better for nutrition.
How to choose good ready-to-cook meals? Look at the food list: Pick meals with simple food materials. Also, check the nutrition paper. Try to avoid meals with too much oil or salt.
Ready-to-cook meals can’t take the place of home-cooked meals. Home-cooked food has fresh ingredients and the warmth of family. However, ready-to-cook meals are really helpful for busy people—they save time and let us enjoy tasty food easily. Eating fresh vegetables with ready-to-cook meals is a good way to make the meal healthier.
What’s more, the government is also helping this kind of food develop well. It makes rules to keep the meals safe, like checking additives and letting us know what’s in the food clearly.

People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ______ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment (失望). The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves (波段).
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry (产业) in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.
