In Shakespeare’s HAMLET, Polonius asks the prince, “What are you reading, my Lord?” Hamlet replies, “Words, words, words.” Either, as is likely, Hamlet wasn’t interested in what he was reading, or, less likely, he didn’t understand the words he was reading. In this case, Polonius should have lent Hamlet a good dictionary.
Dictionaries are essential tools for people who like to read. There are so many words in English that even the most educated person will sometimes meet an unfamiliar word and have to look it up. Languages keep changing, too, with new words constantly being added and new meanings being applied to old words. For example, the 12th edition of Xinhua Dictionary, the most popular dictionary in China, has added new words such as “chu xin” “fen si” “er wei ma” etc. As for new meanings, “girl” once meant “a small child of either sex”. And “naughty” didn’t mean you were “enjoying playing tricks”; it meant you were poor.
A printed dictionary can’t keep pace with all the changes, which is why most dictionaries have websites and apps to help you keep up-to-date. However, I still prefer printed dictionaries because they give you more definitions and more examples of how a word is used. Even a simple word, such as “set”, has 430 meanings (the most of English words) but an online dictionary would only offer two or three. A printed dictionary also gives you the opportunity to discover new words as you run your finger down the page looking for the word you want.
There is no “official” English dictionary, but the Oxford English Dictionary is considered to be the best. For English language learners, however, I would recommend the Collins COBUILD Dictionary for Advanced Learners. Hamlet, by the way, was Danish and a college student. He would have appreciated the Collins Dictionary to help himself with his words, words, words. This dictionary has over 40,000 words and gives you full-sentence definitions with good examples of how words are used.
24 What’s the function of paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To let the readers know more about HAMLET.
C. To arouse readers’ interest in Shakespeare.
D. To explain when it’s necessary to use a dictionary.
25. Why does the author mention “girl” in paragraph 2?
A. To show how powerful Xinhua Dictionary is.
B. To support the idea: languages keep changing.
C. To prove new words are being added to dictionaries.
D. To imply “girl” also means “boy” in some cases.
26. What’s the author’s attitude to printed dictionaries?
A. Favorable. B. Ambiguous. C. Negative. D. Critical.
27. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph?
A. To introduce the history of dictionaries.
B. To call on learners to use dictionaries.
C. To recommend Collins Dictionary.
D. To explain why Hamlet likes Collins.

Many people have fears while traveling abroad. But with so many good places to visit in this world, fears that hold you back are stopping you from wonderful experiences more than they are protecting you. Not being able to communicate can not only be worrying, but sometimes it can even be a bit scary. But don’t let a fear of failing to speak the foreign language inhibit you.
First, try to learn a few words ahead of time, like please, thank you, hello, goodbye. This will go a long way in showing the locals you’re trying. A phrasebook can help, but remember that you may not understand the reply you get.
Second, write down the hotel you chose, and any places of interest you’re planning on visiting. It helps to show a taxi driver or someone you’re asking directions from if you have it written down since it’s possible that you won’t pronounce it correctly.
Third, one of the few words I find to be common is “toilet”. In the US people often ask where to find the bathroom or restroom, but that’s not so easily understood for someone whose native language(母语)isn’t English. But even in the middle of Southeast Asia, people understand the word toilet.
Lastly, try drawing. Andy and I were in a taxi in Izmir, Turkey trying to get to the castle, but the driver didn’t know what we were saying. So Andy quickly drew a castle. The driver laughed and nodded, and then brought us to the castle.
28. What does the underlined word “inhibit” in the first paragraph mean?
A. hurt. B. Change. C. Prevent. D. Protect.
29. What’s the purpose of the author telling us his own story in Izmir, Turkey?
A. To tell us drawing is helpful.
B. To show drawing is easy.
C. To show they were wise.
D. To tell us how to draw.
30. What will you possibly do when you fail to reach a tourist destination abroad?
A. Draw the place to a taxi driver and you’ll be brought there.
B. Ask a taxi driver to write down the place you’ll get to.
C. Try to use GPS navigator.
D. Buy a phrasebook.
31. What does the author try to do through the text?
A. Reduce our fear of learning a foreign language.
B. Teach us how to learn a foreign language abroad.
C. Show us how to ask for help in foreign countries.
D. Tell us how to communicate when we tour abroad.
D
Did you know that the color of sports suits can influence(影响) the performance of an athlete? It may sound strange, but a study suggests this might be true.
Two British scientists studied the results of four sports in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games where the athletes had been given either a red or a blue sports suit. They discovered that when there was a big difference in the score, color had no influence on the result. But if it is a close match, the athlete in a red sports suit was more likely to win. Then they looked at the sports suits of the soccer team at the Euro 2004 championship. Again, teams wearing red won more games.
The two scientists got their idea from earlier studies of wild animals. It had been discovered that when a male shows red on its body, it sends a signal(信号) of it power and strength. For example, in many kinds of monkeys, the more the male shows off its red scars(伤疤) the more females it can attract.
Based on (根据) this fact, the British scientists thought that the idea might work for humans, too. According to them, when an athlete sees a competitor in a red sports suit, he gets a feeling that his competitor could be stronger than him. And that kind of feeling may have a bad influence on the player’s performance in the actual game. Although the idea is interesting, most people don’t accept that color signals in the animal world can really be useful to human sports. They think that it is unreasonable to develop an idea based on such a small number of examples. Much more research has to be done to prove(证明) the influence of sports suit colors on the performance of athletes.
32. What did the scientists find out about the 2004 Athens Olympic Games:
A. Athletes played equally well in four sports.
B. Game results had a big influence on the athletes.
C. Athletes dressed in red scored more in a close match.
D. There was a big difference in red and blue team’s scores.
33. What may be the red scars of a male animal suggest?
A. It is quite strong. B. It is a failure.
C. It is more powerful than other males. D. It has attracted a lot of females.
34. The underlined part “ that kind of feeling” in Paragraph 4 refers to a feeling of ________.
A. weakness B. pride C. danger D. shame
35. What is most people’s view on scientists’ idea?
A. Interested B. Satisfied C. Doubtful D. Thankful.

【解析】
【分析】这是一篇应用文。文章介绍了迪士尼的4个主题公园的相关信息,分别是Magic Kingdoma;Epcot;Disney’s Animal Kingdom以及Disney’s Hollywood Studios。
【21题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第一段第三、四句 “Disney World has four theme parks. A single-day ticket to any of these four theme parks is $67 for adults and $56 for young children above three years. (这四个主题公园的单日门票为成人67美元,三岁以上儿童56美元)”可知,Disney World 有四个主题公园。这四个主题公园的门票,成人每人67美元,三岁以上儿童一天56美元。根据题干中 parents bring you and your 2-year-old little brother 可知,父母两个成人($67/人),一个青少年($56/人),一个小于三岁的幼童(免票),由此可算出总票价为:$190。故选A项。
【22题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章小标题 Epcot 下最后一句 “World Showcase, which lies along a lake, shows international styles from different parts of the globe, including Germany, Canada, Mexico, China and a lot more. (世界橱窗位于湖边,展示来自世界各地的国际风格,包括德国、加拿大、墨西哥、中国等)”可知,Epcot 两个区域中的 World Showcase 区,它坐落在湖边,展示了来自世界各地的国际风格,包括德国、加拿大、墨西哥、中国以及很多别的国家。故 Epcot 值得参观可能是由于人们可以沿着湖边欣赏异国风情。故选D项。
【23题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章小标题 Magic Kingdom 下第二句“ Once you get here, you can pose for pictures with the Disney characters at the entrance.(你一到这里,就可以在入口处摆好姿势和迪斯尼人物合影)” 可知,一旦你到了这里(Magic Kingdom),你就可以在入口处摆好姿势和 Disney 人物合影。根据文章小标题 Disney’s Hollywood Studios 下最后一句“It is also the very best spot for taking pictures with Disney characters.( 它也是与迪斯尼人物拍照的最佳地点) 可知,它也是与 Disney 人物拍照的最佳地点。Mickey Mouse 和 Winnie 都是 Disney 的著名人物,所以想和它们拍照应该去 Magic Kingdom 和 Disney’s Hollywood Studios 这两个主题公园。故选C项。
B
24. What’s the function of paragraph 1?
【答案】24. A 25. B 26. A 27. C
【解析】
【分析】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了词典的重要作用以及作者偏爱纸质词典的原因。
【24题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文尤其是第一段最后一句“In this case, Polonius should have lent Hamlet a good dictionary.( 在这种情况下,普罗尼尔斯应该借给哈姆雷特一本好词典。)”可知,作者在第一段通过引用《哈姆雷特》中的一段对话引出了文章的主题——“dictionary”。故选A。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段第三句“Languages keep changing, too, with new words constantly being added and new meanings being applied to old words. (语言也在不断变化,新词不断被添加,旧词被赋予新的含义。)”可知,随着新词不断出现,旧词的新义不断增加,语言也一直在变化。由此可推知,作者提及“girl”这个旧词的新义是为了支撑“语言在不断变化”这个论点。故选B。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。通读第三段尤其是第二句中的“However, I still prefer printed dictionaries(然而,我还是更喜欢纸质词典)”可知,作者更喜欢使用纸质词典。故选A。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。通读最后一段尤其是第二句“For English language learners, however, I would recommend the Collins COBUILD Dictionary for Advanced Learners. (然而,对于英语学习者,我推荐柯林斯高阶英语词典。)”可知,作者写最后一段的目的是向读者推荐柯林斯高阶英语词典。故选C。
C
28 What does the underlined word “inhibit” in the first paragraph mean?
A. hurt. B. Change. C. Prevent. D. Protect.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. A 31. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章针对出国旅行时的语言沟通恐惧问题,提出了提前学基础词汇、记录地点名称、巧用通用词、以画图辅助交流这四项具体可行的解决办法,旨在帮助读者克服障碍,顺利出行。
【28题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线单词所在语境“Not being able to communicate can not only be worrying, but sometimes it can even be a bit scary. But don’t let a fear of failing to speak the foreign language inhibit you.(无法与他人沟通不仅会让人忧心忡忡,有时甚至会让人感到些许恐慌。但请别因害怕说不好外语就……你。)”可知,上文指出语言不通的困扰,而本句的“but”表示转折,呼应不要让害怕说不好外语的心理对自己产生负面的影响。由此可推测,划线单词的意思和“阻止”有关。选项C“prevent”意为“阻止、阻碍”,与此相符。故选C。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Lastly, try drawing. Andy and I were in a taxi in Izmir, Turkey trying to get to the castle, but the driver didn’t know what we were saying. So Andy quickly drew a castle. The driver laughed and nodded, and then brought us to the castle.(最后一招,试试画画。我和Andy曾在土耳其的伊兹密尔搭乘出租车,想去城堡却怎么说司机都不明白。于是Andy迅速画了一座城堡。司机看后哈哈大笑,点头示意,随即便载着我们顺利抵达了目的地。)”可知,作者讲述在土耳其伊兹密尔的亲身经历,是为了佐证“画画可以有效辅助沟通”这一建议。故选A。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Lastly, try drawing. Andy and I were in a taxi in Izmir, Turkey trying to get to the castle, but the driver didn’t know what we were saying. So Andy quickly drew a castle. The driver laughed and nodded, and then brought us to the castle.(最后一招,试试画画。我和Andy曾在土耳其的伊兹密尔搭乘出租车,想去城堡却怎么说司机都不明白。于是Andy迅速画了一座城堡。司机看后哈哈大笑,点头示意,随即便载着我们顺利抵达了目的地。)”可知,当在国外无法顺利抵达景点时,可以采取“画画示意”的方式解决问题。选项A“Draw the place to a taxi driver and you’ll be brought there.”对应作者用画画示意城堡的成功案例,符合文意。故选A。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Not being able to communicate can not only be worrying, but sometimes it can even be a bit scary. But don’t let a fear of failing to speak the foreign language inhibit you.(无法与他人沟通不仅会让人忧心忡忡,有时甚至会让人感到些许恐慌。但请别因害怕说不好外语,就止步不前。)”以及后文给出的提前学基础词汇、记录地点名称、巧用通用词、画图辅助交流四项具体沟通建议可知,作者的核心目的是告诉读者出国旅行时如何解决沟通问题。故选D。
Doubtful D. Thankful.
【答案】32. C 33. A 34. A 35. C
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了科学家研究发现,运动员衣服的颜色可能对运动员比赛时的表现产生影响。
【详解】1.细节理解题。根据第二段“But if it is a close match, the athlete in a red sports suit was more likely to win.”(但如果是势均力敌的比赛,穿红色运动服的运动员更有可能获胜。)可知,穿红色队服的运动员在势均力敌的比赛中,得分会更高,故选C。
2.细节理解题。根据第三段“It had been discovered that when a male shows red on its body, it sends a signal(信号) of it power and strength. For example, in many kinds of monkeys, the more the male shows off its red scars(伤疤) the more females it can attract.”(人们已经发现,当一名男性在他的身体上显示出红色时,它就会发出一种力量和力量的信号。例如,在许多种类的猴子中,雄性越炫耀它的红色疤痕,它就能吸引更多的雌性。)可知,雄性动物身上的红色伤疤表明这只动物很强壮,故选A。
3.词句猜测题。根据划线部分前文“According to them, when an athlete sees a competitor in a red sports suit, he gets a feeling that his competitor could be stronger than him.”(根据他们的说法,当一个运动员看到一个穿着红色运动服的竞争者,他会觉得这位竞争者可能比他强。)可知,“that kind of feeling”(那种感觉)指的是运动员认为自己比竞争者弱,所以A选项“weakness软弱”符合,B. pride骄傲;C. danger危险;D. shame羞愧,均不合题意,故选A。
4.观点态度题。根据最后一段“Although the idea is interesting, most people don’t accept that color signals in the animal world can really be useful to human sports. They think that it is unreasonable to develop an idea based on such a small number of examples.”(虽然这个想法很有趣,但大多数人不认为动物世界的颜色信号对人类运动有用。他们认为基于这么少的例子来形成一个想法是不合理的。)可推断出,大部分人对科学家的观点是表示怀疑的,C选项“Doubtful”(怀疑的)符合,A. Interested有趣的;B. Satisfied满意的;D. Thankful感谢的,均不合题意。故选C。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Surround yourself with inspiring decorations that help you feel enthusiastic and passionate.(你工作的环境可以帮助你提高整体效率。工作环境没有严格的规定,所以选择适合你的工作环境。让你的周围充满鼓舞人心的装饰,这会让你感到热情和激情)”可知,本段主要是关于创造合适工作环境的建议,B选项中environment对应后文中environment。故B选项“创造合适的工作环境”符合语境,故选B。
【37题详解】

【38题详解】
根据上文“List your tasks in terms of importance.(按重要性列出你的任务)”以及后文“To-do lists are a great tool, but organize them a little rather than just writing down everything that needs to get done. Group tasks in terms of importance.(待办事项清单是一个很好的工具,但要稍微整理一下,而不是把需要做的每件事都写下来。 根据重要性将任务分组)”可知,本段的建议是在工作前列出清单,D选项中list对应后文中lists。故D选项“在你开始一天的工作之前,列一个清单”符合语境,故选D。

While waiting in line or walking to class, you can listen to material for your courses.(如果你是一名学生,可以考虑买一些有声读物或把你的课录下来。在排队或步行去上课时,你可以听课程材料)”可知,本句与后文都是在就如何利用休息时间工作进行举例说明。故G选项“如果你在公交车上有几分钟的时间,利用这几分钟时间阅读一些学校或工作需要的东西”符合语境,故选G。
【40题详解】
根据上文“Do not multitask. Many people assume multitasking is a great way to get more done each day and manage time wisely. However, focusing on multiple tasks at once actually makes you less productive. Things will take longer to do, as you’re not giving anything your full attention.(不要一心多用。许多人认为多任务处理是每天完成更多工作、明智地管理时间的好方法。然而,同时专注于多项任务实际上会降低你的效率。事情会花更长的时间去做,因为你没有给予你全部的注意力)”可知,此处总结上文让我们不要一心多用,即一次只专注于一项任务。故C选项“一次只专注于一项任务”符合语境,呼应主旨句。故选C。
