In 1907, 37-year-old Maria Montessori opened her first school: Children’s House, a preschool that would transform children’s education.
Today, the ideas of the Italian woman who started Montessori schools are still used in preschools all over the world. But back then, the idea that giving children fun activities would help them more than just memorize facts and do drills was very new.
Though her innovations inspired a movement in young children’s learning, Montessori saw her work more simply. “I did not invent a method of education,” she wrote in 1914. “I simply gave some little children a chance to live.”
Montessori was passionate about education from a young age. Born in 1870 and raised in Rome, she took a path that was different from what people expected for women at that time. Montessori studied engineering, and then applied to medical school at the University of Rome, telling a professor during her interview, “I know I shall become a doctor.” The school refused her because of her gender, so Montessori enrolled in(入学)the general university, studied physics, mathematics and natural sciences, and reapplied to medical school. She was admitted, becoming the first woman to enter the university’s Faculty of Medicine, and in July 1896, she became one of Italy’s first female doctors.
Montessori’s medical work led her to the University of Rome’s psychiatric (精神病的) clinic. As part of her job, she visited institutions for children with mental disorders, searching for patients suitable for treatment at the clinic. It was here that her interest in child development intensified.
She read extensively about children with learning differences. In 1898, Montessori spoke at Italy’s National Medical Congress in Turin, advocating for the idea that lack of adequate support and care for children with mental and emotional disorders caused them to misbehave. She developed her own teaching materials, and in 1907, she opened her first school. Montessori’s “auto-education” approach soon had the five-year-old children reading and writing. News of Montessori’s success spread quickly, and by 1908, her name was known around the world.
4. What was Montessori’s view on her educational method?
A. She believed it was a creative method.
B. She considered it a complex system of teaching.
C. She saw it as a way to challenge traditional education.
D. She thought it merely offered a chance for children to exist.
5. Why was Montessori initially refused admission to medical school?
A. She didn’t pass the entrance exam.
B. She lacked the necessary qualifications.
C. The university didn’t accept female students then.
D. She was rude to the professor during her interview.
6. What strengthened Montessori’s interest in child development?
A. Her medical studies. B. Her passion for education.
C. Her work at the psychiatric clinic. D. Her visit to children’s hospitals.
7. Which of the following can best describe Montessori?
A. Careful and talented. B. Innovative and caring.
C. Humorous and helpful. D. Generous and ambitious.
D 5. C 6. C 7. B

Mariah Carey is best known for her love songs, but this week she expressed her distinct hate for a particular enemy: overhead lighting. She jokingly said she was “bothered by the ugly lighting in every elevator, doorway, gym.…Shut the lights. Turn them out. I don’t want to see them.”
Mariah Carey’s words struck a chord. David Warfel, founding designer at Light Can Help You, agrees with Carey. “Overhead lighting is a curse (诅咒) that most of us live under,” says Warfel, who is based in Madison, Wisconsin. “Nothing makes me angrier than overhead lighting,” said Drew Barrymore, a cheerful actress.
There are good reasons that bright light from above can ruin the mood or make someone feel ill at ease. However, the phrase “overhead lighting” has become a catch-all for many types of lighting people don’t like: recessed (嵌入式的) lights, boob lights, LED wafer lights and whatever other ceiling fixtures are on the outs.
Still, designers warn not to completely reject all ceiling-mounted lights. When placed and directed correctly, overhead fixtures can create light that bounces off the walls and ceilings before hitting your eyes, resulting in a soft and comfortable light.
The reason why people don’t like the big light is easy to understand: lights directly above us make shadows and shine too brightly. Also, the light from above usually hits the parts of our eyes that are sensitive to glare (眩光).
So why are the big light and its type so common? Part of it has to do with maximizing profit, says Dave Konstantin, founder of Konstantin Lighting Design. And the fact is that often, no one with specific knowledge about lighting design consults on projects. “I’ve gone into multimillion dollar homes that are brand new, just built,” he says. “And the builder has just put very cheap recessed lights throughout the entire house. Many people don’t notice or care about poor lighting.”
8. Why does the author mention Mariah Carey in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic of the text. B. To praise her love songs.
C. To offer some background information. D. To show her sense of humor.
9. What do the underlined words “struck a chord” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Caused strong responses. B. Were ignored by people.
C. Brought a physical pain. D. Started a musical trend.
10. Why did the author write the fourth paragraph?
A. To claim overhead lighting is always terrible.
B. To show people’s dislike for all ceiling lights.
C. To prove overhead lighting should never be used.
D. To explain proper overhead lighting can be good.
11. What is Dave Konstantin’s attitude to the common use of poor lighting?
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Dismissive.
A 9. A 10. D 11. A
根据第一段“Mariah Carey is best known for her love songs, but this week she expressed her distinct hate for a particular enemy: overhead lighting. She jokingly said she was “bothered by the ugly lighting in every elevator, doorway, gym.…Shut the lights. Turn them out. I don’t want to see them.”(玛丽亚·凯莉最为人所知的是她的情歌,但本周她却公开表达了对某个特定“敌人”的强烈厌恶:那就是头顶的灯光。她开玩笑地表示:“每部电梯、每个门道、健身房里……那难看的灯光都让我感到困扰。关掉灯吧。把灯都关掉。我不想看到它们。”)”可知,提到Mariah Carey是为了引出本文要讨论的话题。故选A。
根据划线词后文“David Warfel, founding designer at Light Can Help You, agrees with Carey. “Overhead lighting is a curse (诅咒) that most of us live under,” says Warfel, who is based in Madison, Wisconsin. “Nothing makes me angrier than overhead lighting,” said Drew Barrymore, a cheerful actress.(“光能帮助你”公司的创始人设计师大卫·瓦弗尔也认同凯里的观点。“头顶的照明简直就是一种诅咒,我们大多数人生活在这样的环境中。”威斯康星州麦迪逊市的瓦弗尔说道。而开朗的女演员德鲁·巴里摩尔则表示:“没有什么比头顶的照明更让我感到愤怒的了。”)”可知,Mariah Carey对头顶照明的不满引起了广泛的共鸣和反响。故划线词意思是“引起了强烈的反响”。故选A。
根据第四段“Still, designers warn not to completely reject all ceiling-mounted lights. When placed and directed correctly, overhead fixtures can create light that bounces off the walls and ceilings before hitting your eyes, resulting in a soft and comfortable light.(不过,设计师们提醒大家,不要完全摒弃所有安装在天花板上的灯具。如果安装得当且方向正确,这些天花板上的灯具能够发出光线,这些光线会先在墙壁和天花板上反射,然后再照到你的眼睛上,从而形成柔和且舒适的光线)”可知,作者写第四段是为了说明适当的顶灯照明是有益的。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“So why are the big light and its type so common? Part of it has to do with maximizing profit, says Dave Konstantin, founder of Konstantin Lighting Design. And the fact is that often, no one with specific knowledge about lighting design consults on projects. “I’ve gone into multimillion dollar homes that are brand new, just built,” he says. “And the builder has just put very cheap recessed lights throughout the entire house. Many people don’t notice or care about poor lighting.”(那么,为什么这种大型灯具及其类型如此常见呢? 故选A。
D
Microbes (微生物) in the bark of trees are absorbing methane (甲烷) from the air, adding to the climate benefits that we know trees give us.
Methane is a greenhouse gas that is responsible for about a quarter of human-caused global warming. Some trees growing in waterlogged soils can release methane that is generated underground. But we also know that methane-eating microbes known as methanotrophs live on tree bark. Methanotrophs consume methane as their source of carbon and chemical energy, producing substances such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and organic compounds.
To investigate this interplay, Vincent Gauci at the University of Birmingham, UK, and his colleagues took measurements from trees growing in well-drained soils around the world, determining the methane exchange between the atmosphere and the tree bark.
They found that, while most trees release small amounts of methane at soil level, further up the trunk, the exchange changes and trees start absorbing atmospheric methane. The CO2 the methanotrophs produce is a much less strong greenhouse gas than methane. “There’s great benefit in that transformation to CO2,” he says.
The findings demonstrate that methanotrophs are removing methane from the atmosphere over a large range, across temperate, boreal and tropical (热带的) environments.
Trees growing in tropical locations are about 12 percent better for the climate, once this methane-absorbing effect is factored in, while trees in temperate locations are about 7 percent better. In total, trees could be absorbing between 24 million and 50 million tonnes of methane from the atmosphere each year, similar to the volume absorbed by the world’s soils.
“Existing forests are that much more important than we thought, and we should preserve them,” says Gauci.
12. What percentage of human-caused global warming is due to methane?
A. 12%. B. 7%. C. About 25%. D. About 50%.
13. What is the main function of methanotrophs according to the text?
A. To preserve trees. B. To release methane.
C. To produce carbon dioxide. D. To consume methane and produce substances.
14. What can be inferred from Gauci’s statement in paragraph 4?
A. Trees absorb more methane annually than global soils.
B. Transforming methane into CO2 benefits the climate.
C. CO2 is the main driver of global warming.
D. CO2 is more harmful than methane.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Role of Methane in Global Warming
B. The Importance of Forests for the Environment
C. Trees: Methane Absorbers and Climate Protectors
D. Methanotrophs: The Hidden Heroes of the Climate
C 13. D 14. B 15. C
根据第二段“Methane is a greenhouse gas that is responsible for about a quarter of human-caused global warming.(甲烷是一种温室气体,它导致的全球变暖程度约占人类活动所导致的全球变暖总程度的四分之一)”可知,人类活动导致的全球变暖中,大约25%由甲烷造成。
根据第二段“But we also know that methane-eating microbes known as methanotrophs live on tree bark. Methanotrophs consume methane as their source of carbon and chemical energy, producing substances such as carbon dioxide(CO2)and organic compounds.(但我们也了解到,有一种被称为“甲烷分解菌”的微生物会栖息在树皮上。甲烷分解菌以甲烷作为碳源和化学能的来源,从而产生诸如二氧化碳(CO2)和有机化合物等物质)”可知,甲烷菌的主要功能是用于消耗甲烷并生成物质。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“They found that, while most trees release small amounts of methane at soil level, further up the trunk, the exchange changes and trees start absorbing atmospheric methane. The CO2 the methanotrophs produce is a much less strong greenhouse gas than methane. “There’s great benefit in that transformation to CO2,” he says.(他们发现,虽然大多数树木在土壤层会释放少量甲烷,但在树干较高部位,这种交换情况会发生变化,树木开始吸收大气中的甲烷。甲烷氧化菌产生的二氧化碳是一种强度远低于甲烷的温室气体。他说:“这种转化为二氧化碳的过程具有很大的益处。”)”可知,将甲烷转化为二氧化碳对气候有益。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Microbes (微生物) in the bark of trees are absorbing methane (甲烷) from the air, adding to the climate benefits that we know trees give us.(树木树皮中的微生物正在从空气中吸收甲烷,这进一步增强了我们所熟知的树木带来的气候改善作用)”结合文章主要讨论了树木通过树皮上的甲烷氧化菌吸收甲烷,对气候产生积极影响。

I’m writing to discuss our performance at the Youth Rhythm Music Fair. I propose we do a dynamic combination of modern and classic songs. How about starting with a high-energy pop song like to get the audience excited, and then smoothly transitioning to a classic like Moon River? 47.
Joe and I no longer lived in the same state, so we weren’t together for the holidays, but I made sure to give my little brother a call on Christmas Day. “The kids must be having a ball with their presents,” I said.
“Oh, yeah,” said Joe. “Santa really came through.”
At the ages of four, three and one, Joe’s kids had no doubt that it was Santa who’d brought those gifts. Joe and I had been that young once. In fact, I would never forget a certain Christmas when I was seven and Joe was five.
When we were kids, Joe and I loved nothing more than getting under each other’s skin. My little brother drove me crazy! If Mom brought home my favorite snack, Joe would make sure to eat it before I got a chance. When our parents gave us each our own basketball, Joe insisted on playing with mine instead of his own.
That Christmas, I decided to play a trick on him. I knew Joe still believed in Santa, and I thought it would be funny to make him think he’d been naughty (淘气的). I secretly walked to the neighbor’s driveway, and grabbed some small, dark, and rough rocks looking like coal. After ensuring everyone was asleep, I slipped into Joe’s room and quietly slipped the rocks into his Christmas stocking. The next morning, when I saw his confused and disappointed face upon finding them, guilt washed over me, yet I kept silent, hoping he’d soon forget.
Years passed, and we grew up. Joe moved away for college, and I got busy with my own life. Yet that memory constantly haunted (萦绕) me. I wanted to tell Joe, but I was afraid he’d be upset.
But this year, something changed. As I listened to Joe’s voice on the phone, I realized I couldn’t keep this secret any longer. “Joe,” I said, taking a deep breath, “there’s something I need to tell you. Remember that Christmas when you were five? The one where you found rocks in your stocking?”

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line. My heart raced, and I held my breath, wondering if Joe would be angry or hurt. Then, he let out a hearty laugh. “Oh, that! I have totally forgotten about it until now,” he said. “I was so confused back then, thinking I’d been a really bad kid. But looking back, it was just a silly trick. You know, it’s part of our fun childhood memories.”
I felt a wave of relief wash over me. All these years, the guilt had weighed heavily on my mind. But now, hearing Joe’s light-hearted response, I knew I’d been worrying for nothing. “I’m so glad you’re not mad at me,” I said, a smile spreading across my face. “I’ve felt terrible about it for ages.” Joe laughed again and said, “Don’t be silly. It’s all in the past. Let’s focus on the present and enjoy this Christmas.” His words filled me with warmth and gratitude. “Thanks for forgiving me. It means a lot to know we can still share these old stories, even after all this time.”

Rocky Mountain National Park: Chasm Lake
Rocky Mountain is amazing both in off-season and summer. In winter, it has fewer visitors and no need for permits in busy areas like Bear Lake. The hike to Chasm Lake is exciting but challenging, with a 2,552-foot elevation (海拔) gain over four miles. Bring an ice ax (斧) and ice skates because the lake is frozen most of the winter.

For glacier lovers, hike the 2.75-mile Glacier Vista Trail in Mount Rainier. Start from the Skyline Trail near the Henry M. Jackson Visitor Center and follow signs. The trail offers views of Nisqually Glacier, snowy valleys, white-capped pines, and the Tatoosh Range. Hike near sunrise for great photos. Check road conditions before going, as the road is only open Friday-Monday.
Zion National Park: Angels Landing
This 4.3-mile route in Zion National Park is famous for its switchbacks, chains, and breathtaking valley views. Winter is easier to get a permit, and you won’t have to wait for other hikers on narrow paths. Bring spikes (钉鞋) for icy conditions.
Yellowstone National Park: Observation Point Snowshoe Trail
In winter, many roads in Yellowstone close to cars, allowing hikers and skiers to explore snow-covered roads and trails. Warming shelters are available. The 2-mile Observation Point Loop near Old Faithful is a great choice, offering views of the Upper Geyser Basin, Old Faithful, and the Firehole River.

A Careful and talented. B. Innovative and caring.
C. Humorous and helpful. D. Generous and ambitious.

Microbes (微生物) in the bark of trees are absorbing methane (甲烷) from the air adding to the climate benefits that we know trees give us.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
