Albert Einstein once said, “I have no special gifts. I am only very curious.” The greatest inventions in history would be impossible without curiosity.
Curiosity can make people brave. Just look at Wan Hu, the Ming Dynasty pioneer (先驱) of space exploration. He was so curious about space that he invented a “flying chair”! He lost his life while testing this invention. He failed, but his curiosity gave future explorers ideas. People learnt from his example, and created safer ways to explore space.
But curiosity is more than just taking risks (危险). It also drives people towards certain goals. Zhang Heng, a Chinese scientist and inventor, was curious about the world: how did everything in the world move? He spent years studying the sky and the earth. Finally, he drew China’s first star map, and invented the first earthquake detector (探测器). His curiosity continues to influence scientists today.
As Jacques Cousteau said, “What is a scientist after all? It is a curious man looking through a keyhole, the keyhole of nature, trying to know what’s going on.” Curiosity is the key. It opens one door after another for us to discover a new world.
39. Why does the writer use Albert Einstein’s words at the beginning?
A. To explain what a special gift is. B. To show Einstein’s great inventions.

42. Which is the right structure of the text? (P1=Paragraph 1...)
A. B. C. D.
C
Why is it good to speak more than just one language? A growing number of studies show that learning a second language has huge benefits.
According to a group of scientists in Canada, using two languages is good for the brain. The scientists studied people who grew up speaking two languages. They discovered that these people were better at understanding new information and adapting to changes. Just as we exercise our bodies to make them stronger, we may also exercise our minds to make them work better. People who speak more than one language do this brain exercise every day. They jump from one language to another, depending on who they are talking to. As a result, they usually make better decisions and are able to solve problems more easily.
They are also better at understanding different cultures. When people grow up speaking two languages, they learn to see things from different points of view. Because of this, they find it easier to get along with all kinds of people whenever they visit a new part of the world.
43. How many main benefits of speaking two languages are there in the passage?
A. One B. Two C. Three D. Four
44. The phrase “adapting to” is closest in meaning to .

Do you have true friends? Do you want to know better between you and your friends? There are three different kinds of friends: “pest friends”, “guest friends”, and “best friends”.
The first kind of friend is simply acquaintances(熟人), and all you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friend at school, at work, but you don’t miss them when they’re not around. When this kind of friend does something bad, you don’t tell them. That is why they are called “pest friends”.
The second kind of friend could also be called “social partners”. They are closer than acquaintances, but not as close as true friends. You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories; you usually have a few things in common, but you don’t talk about anything deep, such as your wishes or fears, and they don’t open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friend, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You’re like family, and know everything abou each other. You have no problem staying at each other’s houses, and you share your deepest feelings and thoughts. They will correct you when you’re wrong, sometimes they may not be perfect, but at least they will always care about you, and never do anything on purpose(故意地)to hurt you.
We all have our pest, guest, and best friends. We should value all friendships and remember, all best friends start out as just acquaintances.
46. If you and David are neighbors and classmates, and do things together, but don’t share your feelings, you are “ _______”.
A. pest friends B. guest friends
C. best friends D. not friends
47. The fourth paragraph mainly tells us _______.
A. how to make a best friend
B. how to learn from your best friends
C. what a “best friend” is
D. what a best friend can do for you
48. From the passage, we can learn that _______.
A. pest friends are important than guest friends
B. we miss our best friends when we’re not with them
C. a best friend hardly does something bad to you
D. a “pest friend” will never become your best friend

B. ①﹣②③④﹣⑤
C. ①﹣②﹣③④⑤
D. ①﹣②③﹣④⑤

Do you have a fear (恐惧) of public speaking? Do you ever get nervous when speaking in front of a group of people?
I remember I used to be deathly afraid of public speaking. My legs would get weak as I made my way in front of the audience. My mouth would tremble (发抖) as I would begin to say the first few words. I would avoid eye contact (避免眼神接触) unless I found someone with a smiling face, then I would just look at that person for the whole speech. Have you experienced these things? Luckily, there is a way to overcome a fear of public speaking.
Understand the cause of the fear
Find out why it’s a fear in the first place. The main reason is the fear of being embarrassed (窘迫的). Most of you are afraid of being laughed at, doing anything foolish or having the audience judge (判断) you. When there are other people who might judge you or think badly of you, this causes you to get nervous.
Change your mindset (心态)
Try not to think about yourself and what the audience might think of you. Instead, think about the audience and how you can best deliver (传递) your message across. Then, you will be able to get over this fear.
Practice
It’s best to practice in front of a supporting (支持的) group of people. This will not only make public speaking easier but also help you gain confidence. The more you practice it, the easier it will get.
The way I was able to get over my fear of speaking came in two periods (时期). The first period was in high school. I entered the speech class, and all I wanted was to get passed. I didn’t care about winning. Even when I forgot what to say, I still didn’t get nervous. The next period was during my job as a trainer. My job was to motivate (激励) people. So gradually, my focus went from thinking about myself to not caring about that, and finally to thinking about my audience. In the two periods, my mindset changed from the mindset of fear to the mindset of power.
So overcoming a fear of public speaking comes down to having the right mindset and practice.
50. What can we learn about the writer from the passage?
A. He used to have a fear of public speaking.
B. He now works as a trainer in high school.
C. He still finds it hard to make a public speech.
D. He got over his fear of speaking with his parents’ help.
51. Which of the following could be helpful to overcome a fear of public speaking?
A. Try to think about how to avoid eye contact.
B. Find out why the audience laugh at you or judge you.
C. Think more about yourself when you make a public speech.
D. Remember to practice in front of a group of supporting people.
52. The writer wants to tell us ________.
A. how harmful a fear of public speaking is
B. what causes a fear of public speaking
C. how to overcome a fear of public speaking
D. why we should overcome a fear of public speaking

When Sarah Cooper was 14, everybody at her school knew her. Was she the best student? The star of the football team? The best performer in the school play? None of those things. She was named as the most promising chef (最有前途的主厨) on a popular cooking show in the US.
Flynn McGarry was another kid chef on the show. He was famous as “the Justin Bieber of food” because he had so much talent at age 12. He even opened a restaurant in New York City. Just like Sarah and Flynn, there were many other kids on cooking shows.
So how did cooking start to rise (兴起) and become so popular with kids?
In the old days, people thought of cooking as a boring chore, just like doing the dishes and cleaning the house. Only people who wanted to be wonderful chefs were interested in cooking.
But things became different little by little. Cooking shows became popular in America at the beginning of the 21st century (世纪). Many kids watched these shows with their family. Some kids became stars on the shows. At the same time, online cookbooks and cooking videos made it easy to learn how to cook. At last, more and more kid chefs were born.

47. The fourth paragraph mainly tells us _______.
A. how to make a best friend
B. how to learn from your best friends
C. what a “best friend” is

C. a best friend hardly does something bad to you
D. a “pest friend” will never become your best friend
