The answer is Heilongjiang. One out of every nine bowls of rice in China comes from here. Heilongjiang grows a lot of rice, wheat, soybean and corn. This is thanks to black soil (土壤). It is some of the richest in the world. It has many decayed (腐烂的) plants and animals in it. They help grains to grow faster and better. Black soil covers more than half of the fields in Heilongjiang. That’s why people call it the country’s “grain barn (谷仓)”. Black soil is like a sponge (海绵) so it can store water. This way, plants always have enough to drink. Black soil is called “the panda of farmland”. You can only find it in a few places around the world, such as northeastern China, Ukraine and Mississippi in the US. Besides black soil, there are some other kinds of soil in our country, such as red soil, yellow soil, white soil and green soil. In places like Jiangxi, Hunan and Yunnan, the soil is red. Tea trees, oranges and bamboo grow well on this land. The Loess Plateau in northwestern China, such as Shanxi, Shaanxi and Gansu has yellow soil. It’s good for growing herbs. White soil is full of salt. You can often find it near the sea or in northern China such as Xinjiang. It’s home to beautiful Euphrates poplar trees (胡杨树). Green soil is great for growing rice. It covers about 25 percent of China’s farmland. You can mostly find it in southern China, such as Hunan, Anhui and Jiangsu. 35. Why does the writer begin the text with a question? A. He quickly ran ahead while his father stopped to remove the rocks. Soon the boy began to feel lots of pain (疼痛) in his feet and had to slow down.
