B When my freshman year began, I thought I knew the story of my family’s Stanford connection. Uncle Dan was the only one of my grandmother’s five sons to enroll in college. When my father dropped out of high school at age 16 he joined his older brother on Stanford’s campus — in his case, as a full-time dishwasher. Occasionally, he’ d slip into the back of Uncle Dan’ s classes and eavesdrop (偷听) on the early childhood psychology lectures. That ended when Uncle Dan dropped out sophomore (大二学生)year — for financial reasons, as I understood — and started working full time as a caregiver at the newly formed campus childcare,a job he’d begun while on federal work-study. I rarely saw my uncle when I was growing up, but at Stanford, I got to know him better. Throughout my years on campus, I would run into people who knew my uncle from his work at the daycare, and their faces would light up. “We tried to get our daughter into his class,” one Stanford staff member told me. “All the other parents say he’s the best teacher.” I started to suspect that my dad had missed something about his brother’s Stanford story, which he’d always described as a bit of a tragedy (悲剧) of circumstances: If Uncle Dan hadn’t needed to work so much on top of his studies, he could have finished college. Last year, I asked my uncle why he’d quit school. “Oh, my girl,” he said, “that time at Stanford was unhappy — full of loneliness and being alone. Working with the children gave me everything I’d hoped to find there and beyond: thoughtful depth, mental growth, purpose, and motivation to learn.” He didn’t say whether he would have stayed in school if Stanford had better supported first-generation students back then, and I didn’t ask. I didn’t need to. I finally understood my family’s Stanford story from my uncle’s point of view: not as a tale of educational achievement postponed but as a necessary turn onto a path that offered far more joy and fulfillment. 4. What did the author’s father do in Stanford’s campus? A. He attended psychology classes formally. B. He helped Uncle Dan with studies. C. He worked as a full-time dish cleaner. D. He worked at the campus childcare. 5. Why did the author doubt her father’s story about Uncle Dan? A. She heard daycare parents spoke highly of Uncle Dan. B. She learned Uncle Dan had dropped out because of loneliness. C. She found Uncle Dan actually finished his college studies. D. She saw Stanford teachers had showed great respect to Uncle Dan. 6. What did Uncle Dan think of his study career at Stanford? A. A pity due to financial problems. B. A state of unhappiness and loneliness. C. A successful and enriching experience. D. A waste of time without school support. 7. Which of the following is the best title of the text? A. My Family’s Stanford Dream B. Stanford: A Family Connection C. Uncle Dan: Stanford’s Best Daycare Teacher D. Rethinking Uncle Dan’s Stanford Story C For many older generations, a fancy office and a promotion used to mean you were successful. Moving up the career ladder was the dream, and each step higher brought more respect, more recognition and more money. But for young people today, things look very different. Rather than focusing on promotions or job titles, Gen Z — usually defined as those born between 1997 and 2012 — is focusing on stability, security and balance, a trend called “career minimalism.” A survey from jobs website Glassdoor found that 68% of Gen Z workers aren’t interested in management roles unless they come with extra pay or a meaningful title. For them, becoming a boss is no longer the ultimate goal — having a safe, reliable job is. And rather than company jobs, more and more young people are choosing to work in health care, education, government and skilled trades. There are several reasons for this shift in attitude. Mass layoffs in tech and finance have shown young workers how quickly jobs can disappear, and the rise of AI has created anxiety about which roles will survive in the future. What’s more, climbing the career ladder often meant giving up evenings, weekends, and even personal health. And with burnout on the rise, the old idea of “work harder, climb faster” feels unsustainable. Instead, Gen Z is drawn to stable, essential jobs that offer security in ways corporate roles often can’t. This isn’t to say they aren’t ambitious, though. According to the Glassdoor survey, more than half have a “side hustle (副业),” whether it’s freelance (自由职业的) work, a small business, or creative projects. And for many, these aren’t just extra jobs, but a way to express themselves and find meaning beyond the office. Their main job may cover the bills, but the side hustle brings passion, freedom and purpose. “I always joke that I don’t dream of labor,” one Glassdoor Community member said. “If people were truly passionate about their job, it wouldn’t pay anything. Passion is for your 5 — 9 after the 9 — 5.” 8. What does “career minimalism” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Focusing on promotions and job titles. B. Valuing stability and a balanced work-life. C. Choosing high-paying corporate jobs. D. Seeking management roles with extra income. 9. Why do many Gen Z workers avoid company jobs? A. They prefer freelance work as their main job. B. They are not interested in extra pay from corporate jobs. C. Company jobs often emphasize management roles. D. Company jobs lack stability and may cause burnout. 10. What can we learn about Gen Z’s “side hustle” from the text? A. It is just a way to earn extra money. B. It mostly consists of creative projects. C. It makes them less focused on their main job. D. It helps release their enthusiasm for life beyond main jobs. 11. What is the function of the joke in the last paragraph? A. To show Gen Z’s dislike for physical work. B. To explain why Gen Z values side hustles over main jobs. C. To prove Gen Z prefers 5 — 9 free time to 9 — 5 work. D. To illustrate Gen Z’s view on passion and full-time work. D The Earth has reached its first climate tipping point, with large-scale die-offs of warm-water coral reefs (珊瑚礁) indicating the severe impact of global warming, according to a new report from Global Tipping Points, authored by 160 researchers from 23 countries. A climate tipping point set by scientists refers to a threshold (临界点) in the climate system at which it shifts from one stable state to another. Once this “threshold” is crossed, the state of the climate system can undergo significant and often irreversible changes, with potentially disastrous impacts on life on Earth. Scientists have set this threshold at 1.2 degrees Celsius warming above pre-industrial. However, global temperatures have already risen 1.4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, indicating that the impacts of crossing this tipping point are already emerging. Coral reefs, which support about a quarter of all marine species, are among the ecosystems most vulnerable (脆弱的) to warming. The report warns that unless global temperatures are brought back toward 1.2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and ultimately to l degree Celsius, no warm-water coral reefs of large size and number will remain on Earth. Tim Lenton, the lead author of the report, emphasized that we can no longer treat tipping points as a future risk. The first tipping point, a large-scale dieback of warm-water coral reefs, has already been reached. The report comes just weeks ahead of this year’s COP30 climate summit being held at the edge of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. That same rainforest system is now at risk of collapsing once the average global temperature warms beyond just 1.5 degrees Celsius based on deforestation rates, the report said, revising down the estimated threshold for the Amazon. Also of concern if temperatures keep rising is the threat of disruption (破坏) to a major ocean current called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC, which helps to ensure mild winters in northern Europe. The scientists urged countries at November’ s COP30 to work toward bringing down climate-warming carbon emissions. 12. What does the underlined word “irreversible” in paragraph 2 most probably mean? A. Recoverable. B. Adjustable. C. Temporary. D. Permanent. 13. What can we learn about the climate threshold? A. It is higher than current speed of global warming. B. It was set mainly to protect warm-water coral reefs. C. It comes before the climate’s entering a new stable state. D. It has not been crossed as temperatures are under control. 14. What is Tim Lenton’s attitude towards climate tipping points? A. Concerned. B. Optimistic. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring. 15. What can be inferred about the Amazon rainforest according to the report? A. Its deforestation rates will slow down. B. Its threshold for collapse has been adjusted lower. C. It will remain safe if global temperature stays below 1. 5℃. D. It is more sensitive to warming than warm-water coral reefs. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Every year, the international education company Education First (EF) ranks countries based on their English skills. Every time the school released exam results, Anna would always end up in 23rd position among 50 pupils. Always 23, regardless of topic or term. “Mom, do you think 23 is bad?” Anna once asked quietly. Sumi hesitated, then forced a smile: “No, honey. It’s just a number.” But every time she heard that nickname, it still caused her concern. One weekend, Sumi took Anna to a family get-together. Other parents boasted (吹嘘) about their kids’ piano honors or math awards. When asked about dreams, the kids talked of being pianists or politicians — Anna quietly moved around, refilling drinks and passing snacks. When it was her turn, she smiled softly: “I want to be a teacher. I love playing with little kids.” The room went quiet. While others praised grand dreams, all Sumi could think about was Anna’s tenacious (难以摆脱的) nickname — Number 23. Sumi did everything to help Anna’s study — hired professional teachers, bought fancy supplies, and even packed brain food for better marks. Anna tried too, giving up her favorite things, like drawing and paper cutouts to study nonstop. But then the indicators started showing — she lost her appetite and couldn’t sleep. “Mom, I’m tired,” Anna said softly one night, feverish. It broke Sumi’s heart. That’s when she gave in and stopped pressing. She gave Anna her independence back. And just like that, Anna bounced back to being the cheery little child they knew. A few weeks later, Sumi and her friends took a weekend trip with their families. On the way back, they hit traffic delays. The kids grew restless, but Anna acted like a big sister — telling jokes that even made the adults laugh. She also turned leftover candy boxes into paper animals (elephants, lions, birds) and gave one to each kid as a souvenir. The other parents smiled with appreciation, and for the first time in years, Sumi felt pride rise in her chest. Days went on as usual, but slight changes seemed to be happening. When final exams came, Anna’s grades stayed similar, still mid-class. What Sumi didn’t know was that the teacher had added a special extra question to the exam: Who is the real-life hero in class and why? 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Sumi received a call from the teacher, who told her amazing news. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ When Anna returned home from school, Sumi looked at her excitedly. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 英语试卷 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? I strongly believe our school library should extend its opening hours, as it will bring real benefits to students. Firstly, many of us have tight schedules with classes and after-school tasks. Regular library hours often don’t match our free time, so longer hours allow us study or borrow books when it’s convenient. Secondly, the library’s quiet space and rich resources help with focused learning. More opening time means we can make better use of these advantages, especially when preparing for exams. Lastly, it shows the school cares about our academic needs. In short, extending library hours is a practical choice that supports our study. Thank you! 第二节(满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】 Sumi received a call from the teacher, who told her amazing news. The teacher said that they added a bonus question at the end of the exam — Who is the real-life hero in class and why? Nearly the whole class chose Anna. Sumi froze, unable to say a word. The teacher also told her Anna was loved for being kind, helping others, and making everyone feel included. “Grades aside, you’re raising a genuinely remarkable child,” the teacher added. Sumi sat quietly, tears rolling down her cheeks — tears of joy, relief, and finally understanding. When Anna returned home from school, Sumi looked at her excitedly. She pulled Anna close, telling her that she had known all from the teacher, and congratulated her on being elected as the real-life hero. To her surprise, Anna just shook her head, saying that she didn’t want to be a hero — she’d rather be the one clapping for heroes than the one everyone claps for. Sumi was shocked, realizing that what really mattered to Anna was being kind, happy, and true to herself. Maybe “Number 23” wasn’t so horrible. With this thought, she felt relieved for her daughter. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
