Subject: Workshop arrangements
Date: Monday June 10
Ms. Bao,
I have read your draft (草稿) of the schedule for the coming workshop (研讨会). I wish we had scheduled it for next Monday instead of for the day after tomorrow. There is still so much to do to get ready; however, we can’t change the date now. I really appreciate your support in getting things ready.
Here are some things I need you to take care of. Tea and snacks should be served immediately after Mr. Chang’s presentation. He plans to talk for just an hour, so there will be time for this before the next presentation begins. Also, Room C is a small room, and serving a meal there would be difficult. See if you can exchange places with the Market Research workshop. The room seems more convenient and comfortable for eating.
Please make sure there are enough chairs in each room for everyone. So far, 45 people have signed up for the workshop, but a few more people could come in today or tomorrow. You should have 15 extra chairs in each room. There is one last schedule change. Mr. Wang will have to leave right after lunch, so please give him Ms. Lee’s time slot (period), and she can take Mr. Wang’s afternoon time slot. Please change the schedule and send it to me this afternoon. Thank you.

Polo (马球) is normally played on horses, and it’s a very fast game. But it can also be played on elephants. Although elephant polo is not the fastest game in the world, we always believe it’s the biggest.
Elephants do actually enjoy polo. It’s a lot of fun for them because they’re social animals and in a polo tournament (锦标赛) which lasts a week, dozens of elephants meet up, many from the same family. And they get fed extremely well — better than in their normal life.
We sit on elephants and hit a white wooden ball, using a long bamboo stick that has a polo mallet (球棍) head on the end of it. The pitch (sports field) is about three-quarters the length of a football pitch. And the goals are the same width as football goals. We’ve never had a serious accident. A mahout — an elephant handler — sits in front of us and guides the elephant.
There are four elephants on either side in a game, plus the referee’s (裁判员) elephant. We usually have sixteen animals available on any given day, in four teams. There are two halves, called chukkas, in a game of elephant polo, the same as in normal polo. We play ten minutes during each half. A team of beginners might score one or two goals, if they’re lucky, while an advanced team might score about ten.
During the game, we chase (追赶) after the ball on our elephant, going quite quickly, and the elephant will often help us out with its foot. They’re not allowed to pick up the ball with their trunks, though they sometimes try. The elephants often provide entertainment. They might decide to lie down across the goal for fun but that’s a no-no.
34. One reason why elephants like polo is that they can .
A. meet their family members B. enjoy the pleasure of victory
C. play with other animals D. get better drinks
35. What do we know about elephant polo? .
A. One game lasts 40 minutes. B. It is easy for beginners to score.
C. Its goals are wider than football goals. D. Its field is smaller than a football field.
36. Which of the following is against the rules of elephant polo? .
A. An elephant kicks the ball B. An elephant runs too quickly.
C. An elephant uses its trunk to lift the ball. D. An elephant uses its body to stop other elephants.
37. The text is mostly probably written by .
A an elephant polo referee B. an elephant polo owner
C. an elephant polo coach D. an elephant polo player
Turning 18 is a big deal when you are a teenager. It means you are responsible for yourself and don’t need your parents’ permission any more. However, there are lots of opinions about when one becomes an adult. Some are based on science, while others are personal opinions. While currently the age is 18, science supports 25 as a more sensible age for adulthood, and I agree.
While studying the brain of teenagers, scientists have learned that when kids are around l8, their prefrontal cortex (前额皮层) is only halfway developed. The prefrontal-cortex helps people set and achieve goals by receiving signals from different regions of the brain to process information and adapting accordingly. That halfway development means that you still have things to learn and your brains still have time to develop until the age of 25.
Some people think going off to college and living on your own qualify (使……具有资格) san adult, while others may believe having a steady income and being able to afford to live on your own are what make you an adult. Not everyone has a fortunate life where they have family that can provide support; there are situations where you are forced to become an “adult” whether you like it or not.
In the foster care (寄养) system, once a child turns 18, he or she is considered an adult and can no longer receive state-sponsored support. These children are forced into a life where they have no family or anyone to support them other than those who were there for them in the system.
Having a quality job will allow you to supply yourself with necessary things to live and help you become a more mature and responsible person. Also, going through difficult times and realizing life isn’t as easy as it seems, should qualify someone as an adult.
38. What is the author’s attitude toward considering 25 as an age for adulthood?
A. Cautious. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
39. How does the prefrontal cortex work to help people set and achieve goals?
A. By dealing with received signals and responding accordingly.
B. By collecting information from other parts of the body.
C. By sending instructions to different regions of the brain
D. By transporting sensed emotions and making records
40. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A. Give a definition of adulthood.
B. Stress the importance of family support.
C. Prove not everyone lives a fortunate life.
D. Show opinion on becoming an adult is divided
41. What is one standard qualifying you as an adult according to the author?
A. Setting up a family.
B. Being responsible for your study.
C. Accepting and learning from the low moments in life.
D. Buying yourself quality things to live.
People use laughter to connect and bond with others. It’s how we tell friends that we find their jokes funny, or how kids in a park show that they are having fun. Laughter is so important to humans, even if they belong to different cultures or speak different languages. What about animals? Scientists are studying if there is a connection between animals’ laughing and playing.
Sasha Winkler, from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), studies biological anthropology (人类学),including the study of animal behavior. She noticed that the small monkeys she worked with, liked to play together by chasing each other. While having fun together, they made panting (喘气) sounds, almost like they were out of breath, which reminded Winkler of their quiet laughter. This made Winkler wonder whether other animals did so while they were playing.
To find out whether other animals laugh and play, Winkler teamed up with another scientist named Greg Bryant, a professor and vice chair in the Department of Communication at UCLA. Together, they found and read dozens of reports written by other scientists who study animals. Winkler and Bryant looked for any mentions in any animal of sound signaling like the panting of the monkeys during their playing.
In April 2021, Winkler and Bryant published their findings in a science journal. Through their research, they identified 65 species or groups of animals, which laugh while playing. The animals that laugh the most include primates (灵长类) like monkeys and apes, rodents (啮齿动物) like rats, and mammals that live in the ocean like dolphins. Their work won’t only help us understand animals better but it could also help us understand how humans develop or change over time. Next, they will carry on more study to find more.
42. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To conclude the main idea.
B. To put forward the topic.
C. To offer the supporting evidences.
D. To add the background information.
43. What are the small monkeys like when they are having fun?
A. They can hardly breathe.
B. They tend to laugh separately.
C. They laugh at a low sound.
D. They don’t laugh at all.
44. What do we know about Winkler and Bryant’s study?
A. It is great progress in the study of animals and humans.
B. It is only based on the findings in a science journal.
C. Over 65 groups of animals laugh while playing.
D. They do the research only by studying primates and rodents.
45. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Science. B. Education. C. Health. D. Entertainment.
第Ⅱ卷
五、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
For many teenagers, a job is a way to earn a little extra money. For me, it is more than that.
At the age of 16, I was offered my very first job as a shopgirl in a clothing store. On the first day, my manager was training me how to fold and organize platform after platform of clothes. The work seemed overwhelming, and everything had to be done in an accurate way. I got so impatient because I couldn’t get it right the first couple of times. After about ten tries, I had the clothes folded perfectly. Then it took me thirty minutes to get them all looking uniform. Now, I fold and organize clothes every day, and I’m able to do them well. Through this experience, I’ve learned to be patient.
Helping customers and establishing connections with them is one of the things I love most about my job. About two months ago, I helped a woman who was looking for a dress. She told me exactly what she was picturing—a blue dress with long sleeves and a lace neck. We didn’t have any such dress, and when I explained that to her, she wasn’t very happy. Instead of getting annoyed, I tried getting to know her a bit better and asked what the dress was for, so I could find other items in her size that could work. We shared our love of the Netflix fashion show, and she ended up buying $200 worth of new clothes, having found other items she liked. This experience has taught me to be more open with strangers.
Every job has its share of frustrations and challenges; to do well you must learn to deal with them. I’ve learned this from my own experience, and it has helped me in other aspects of my life as well.
46. What was the author’s first job? (no more than 5 words)
47. What is the meaning of the underlined word in Para. 2? (no more than 3 words)

Subject: Workshop arrangements
Date: Monday, June 10
Ms. Bao,
I have read your draft (草稿) of the schedule for the coming workshop (研讨会).

It’s a lot of fun for them because they’re social animals, and in a polo tournament (锦标赛) which lasts a week, dozens of elephants meet up, many from the same family.
C play with other animals D. get better drinks
35. What do we know about elephant polo? .
A. One game lasts 40 minutes. B. It is easy for beginners to score.
C. Its goals are wider than football goals. D. Its field is smaller than a football field.

A. An elephant kicks the ball B. An elephant runs too quickly.
C. An elephant uses its trunk to lift the ball. D. An elephant uses its body to stop other elephants.
37. The text is mostly probably written by .
A. an elephant polo referee B. an elephant polo owner

After about ten tries, I had the clothes folded perfectly. Then it took me thirty minutes to get them all looking uniform.” 故回答为:Huge and difficult. 【答案】
Small Acts, Big Impact
Dear fellow students,
Animals are vital to the ecosystem, playing irreplaceable roles in maintaining nature’s balance. As responsible students, we must take action. Let’s make handwritten posters and distribute leaflets to spread animal protection awareness. Refuse animal fur products, ivory carvings and other souvenirs made from animal parts. We can also organize charity sales to raise funds for local animal shelters.
Animals are our dear friends, and the earth is our common home. Let’s start with small acts — every refusal, every poster, every donation counts. Let’s strive for harmonious coexistence between humans and animals, making our planet more vibrant!
