Listen to the next question. Good morning, everyone. This lesson is a part of our leadership series. Let me start by sharing a story of a Richard rochester, one of the most successful businessmen in britain. Years ago, I was given the task of organizing a conference in the south of england. I chose a five star hotel owned by rochester as the venue. Susan, the receptionist, helped me arrange everything perfectly. Once when we were chatting, I asked Susan if she's ever met mister rochester. SHE said yes. Shortly after mister rochester bought the hotel, he made an appointment to see the hotel manager. When he arrived, the first person he met with Susan, who was cleaning the carpet. He chatted with Susan for thirty minutes before keeping his appointment with the manager. He spent all day at the hotel talking with each member of the staff, from the top guy to the lady who cleaned the toilets. Six months later, mister rochester paid another visit. Susan had been promoted to receptionist, but he recognized her immediately and addressed her by name. He even remembered that he had a little girl and what her name was. No, I don't believe that Richard rochester has that good of memory. He must have written a lot of notes after his first visit and read them over again before that second visit. It's time consuming, but IT shows the importance he places on human relationships. I think that's one of the secrets of his success. Good morning, everyone. In 1990, Hal Donaldson was 23 years old, fresh out of college and found himself in Calcutta, India, where he was asked to interview Mother Teresa.
Donaldson says about the great woman famed for feeding the hungry, “She wasn’t wearing shoes and her ankles were swollen (肿的). She sat down with me and was very polite. ”After the interview, Mother Teresa asked him, “What are you doing to help the poor?” Donaldson admitted that he was young and wasn’t focused on helping others. With a smile on her face, Mother Teresa said, “Everyone can do something.”
Those words deeply struck Donaldson and forced him to face some hard truths about himself.
Hal Donaldson grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. When he was 12 years old, his parents were hit by a drunk driver; his father died, and his mother was seriously injured. To make ends met, they went on welfare. Donaldson says, “I had holes in my shoes and clothes. When you’re teased at school for that, you just want to escape.”
He managed to do just that. Donaldson got into college and turned his focus to making money for himself. He says, “I was just trying to find my way out of insignificance. However, it’s easy to overlook others along the way. I was the guy that would see a homeless person and cross the street; so I didn’t have to confront (面对) him. My focus was on climbing to the top instead of helping those trying to climb with me.”
Donaldson returned home from India with a different thought. He traveled to eight cities in America and stayed on the streets and listened to stories of the homeless. “My heart broke,” he says. “I knew I could no longer just live for myself.”
Inspired by Mother Teresa’s words and the stories he’d heard across America, Donaldson loaded a pick-up truck with $300 worth of groceries and handed them out to anyone who needed help. In1994, Donaldson created the nonprofit organization, Convoy for Hope, which works with communities across America and around the world. Their work focuses on feeding children, women’s empowerment, helping farmers and disaster services.
24. What did 23-year-old Hal Donaldson do in India?
A. He interviewed Mother Teresa. B. He fed the hungry with Mother Teresa,

Over the past decades, experts have done a considerable amount of research to explore different ways to encourage children’s learning. Especially, there has been a common focus on how physical activity, separated from the learning activities, can improve children’s learning. However, there has been less of a focus aimed at the potential of integrating (合并) physical activity into the learning activities.
Researchers from the University of Copenhagen conducted the Basketball Mathematics study at five Danish primary and elementary schools. The main purpose of it was to develop a learning activity that integrates basketball and mathematics and examine how it might affect children’s motivation for mathematics.756 children from 40 different classes participated in the project, where about half of them — once a week for six weeks — had Basketball Mathematics during gym class, while the other half played basketball without mathematics.
“During classes with Basketball Mathematics, the children had to collect numbers and perform calculations associated with various basketball exercises. An example could be counting how many times they could sink a basket from three meters away vs at a one-meter distance, and adding up the numbers. Both the math and basketball elements could be adjusted to suit the children’s levels, as well as being adjusted for whether it was addition, multiplication or some other operations that needed to be practiced,” explains Linn Damsgaard, a leading researcher.
The results showed that children’s motivation for math integrated with basketball was 16% higher compared to classroom math learning. Children also experienced a 14% increase in self-determination compared with classroom teaching. Meanwhile Basketball Mathematics improved their math confidence.
“We are planning to do research to examine whether the Basketball Mathematics model can strengthen performance in mathematics. Once we have the final results, we hope that they will inspire school teachers and principals to prioritize (优先处理) more physical activity and movement in such subjects. Eventually, we hope to succeed in putting these tools into school system and teacher education,” says Associate Professor Jacob Wienecke.
28. What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To show the advantage of the study.
B. To introduce a way to raise math grades.
C. To conduct a review of past research.
D. To explain the reason for the study.
29. What can we learn about the study?
A. It tailored activities to different kids.
B. Kids were divided into 40 groups.
C It required kids to do math after playing basketball.
D. Kids couldn’t enjoy basketball in the process.
30. What effect does basketball have on the participants?
A. More motivation for exercise.
B. A gain in desire to learn math.
C. More confidence in basketball.
D. A rise in determination to learn.
31. How does Jacob Wienecke expect the study to help educators?
A. Make math learning easier.
B. Inspire students’ math confidence.
C. Build physical activity into teaching.
D. Notice the benefits of physical exercise.
D
Five years ago, French navy officer Jérôme Chardon was listening to a radio program about the journey of the bar-tailed godwit, a bird that migrates 14,000 kilometers between New Zealand and Alaska. Chardon understood how treacherous the journey would be, as heavy storms frequently hit Pacific island communities. Yet, somehow, bar-tailed godwits routinely pass through the area uninjured. Chardon wondered whether learning how birds traveled could help coastal communities avoid natural disasters.
This past January, a team from France’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) began experiments designed to test Chardon’s idea. Researchers with a project led by Frédéric Jigue t from NMNH equipped 56 birds of five species with cutting- edge animal tracking technology. The team members were ferried to remote islands in French Polynesia, where they attached tags (标签) using tracking technology. These tags sent the birds’ locations to the International Space Station, which sent the data back to scientists on Earth who could then follow the birds — waiting to see how the birds responded to natural disasters.
The project is focusing on birds’ ability to hear the low-frequency sound humans cannot hear. Researchers believe it is most likely that signal birds would use the sound to sense storms and tsunamis (海啸). In a 2014 study, scientists tracking a kind of golden-winged birds in the central and southeastern America found that the birds flew up to 1,500 kilometers to escape from an outbreak of tornadoes that killed 35 people. The birds fled at least 24 hours before any extreme weather hit, leaving the scientists to believe that they had heard the storm system from more than 400 kilometers away.
The team plans on tagging hundreds more birds across the Pacific to prepare for a potential tsunami.“I think if there’s one wave that spreads across islands, we can get data from different species at different locations,” says Jiguet. “That will say it’s worth continuing to tag and to develop local systems to better analyze this. There are chances that we will develop a bird-based tsunami early warning system.”
32. Which of the following best explains the word “treacherous” underlined in paragraph 1?
A. Strange. B. Risky. C. Unknown. D. Frequent.
33. What is the function of the tags?
A. Reporting the birds’ situations. B. Distinguishing bird species.
C. Tracking natural disasters. D. Guiding researchers to islands.
34. Why is the 2014 study mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To explain a concept. B. To prove an assumption.
C. To present a new topic. D. To make comparisons.
35. What might be the best title for the text?
A. How Can Birds Avoid Natural Disasters?
B. How Does a Warning System Function?
C. Can Birds Warn Us of Natural Disasters?
D. Can Birds Play a Role in Human Research?

Seventeen-year-old Chase had lost his wallet earlier that day while out fishing with his friends. He had searched and searched, but in vain. Eventually, Chase returned home and found his wallet sent back in the gate house of the community. But the one who sent the wallet had left without leaving his name or address When the family were talking about the story later that day, they decided that they wanted to do something to pay back the finder’s kindness. But what could they do? They didn’t know who the finder was, not to mention his address. Could they find him?
It was when they were at a loss that a good idea occurred to Chase’s mother, Michelle: they could check the monitor recording of the gate house. Luckily, they got a picture of the boy. She quickly made a Facebook post using the photo, describing the boy’s honest act and expressing how the family were hoping to meet him to convey their thanks in person.
In no time at all, some people in the community recognised Jack and informed Michelle. When Michelle and her family got contact with Jack, they were surprised to learn just what Jack’s family had been going through.
Jack’s father had recently recovered from a disease but was still suffering from the aftereffects. He had difficulty breathing and wasn’t allowed to return to his job at a meat packing plant. So that was the reason why the boy had to sell balloons to help support the family.

【答案】17. B 18. A 19. C 20. B
【解析】
【详解】W: Good morning, everyone. This lesson is a part of our leadership series. Let me start by sharing a story of Richard Rochester, one of the most successful businessmen in Britain. Years ago, I was given a task of organizing a conference in the south of England. I chose a five-star hotel owned by Rochester as the venue. Susan, the receptionist, helped me arrange everything perfectly. Once when we were chatting, I asked Susan if she’d ever met Mr. Rochester. She said “Yes.” Shortly after Mr. Rochester bought the hotel, he made an appointment to see the hotel manager. When he arrived, the first person he met was Susan who was cleaning the carpet. He chatted with Susan for 30 minutes before keeping his appointment with the manager. He spent all day at the hotel talking with each member of the staff from the top guy to the lady who cleaned the toilets. Six months later, Mr. Rochester paid another visit. Susan had been promoted to receptionist, but he recognized her immediately and addressed her by name. He even remembered that she had a little girl and what her name was. Now I don’t believe that Richard Rochester has that good memory. He must have written a lot of notes after his first visit and read them over again before that second visit. It’s time-consuming, but it shows the importance he places on human relationships. I think that’s one of the secrets of his success.

C

A. It tailored activities to different kids.
B. Kids were divided into 40 groups.
C. It required kids to do math after playing basketball.
【答案】28. D 29. A 30. B 31. C

【32题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段的“Five years ago, French navy officer Jérôme Chardon was listening to a radio program about the journey of the bar-tailed godwit, a bird that migrates 14,000 kilometers between New Zealand and Alaska.(五年前,法国海军军官Jérôme Chardon正在收听一个关于斑尾塍鹬的迁徙之旅的广播节目,这种鸟会从新西兰飞往阿拉斯加,迁徙距离达到14,000公里)”以及划线单词的后半句话“as heavy storms frequently hit Pacific island communities.(由于经常性的风暴袭击太平洋岛屿社区)”可知,太平洋岛屿社区经常受到风暴袭击,所以鸟类迁徙经过这里时会非常的危险。所以划线单词意为“危险的”。故选B。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“These tags sent the birds’ locations to the International Space Station, which sent the data back to scientists on Earth who could then follow the birds — waiting to see how the birds responded to natural disasters.(这些标签将鸟类的位置发送到国际空间站,后者再将数据传回地球上的科学家,科学家们随后可以跟踪这些鸟类,观察它们如何应对自然灾害)”可知,这些标签的功能是报告鸟类的位置和情况。故选A。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The project is focusing on birds’ ability to hear the low-frequency sound humans cannot hear. The birds fled at least 24 hours before any extreme weather hit, leaving the scientists to believe that they had heard the storm system from more than 400 kilometers away.(该项目专注于鸟类听觉低频声音的能力,而这种声音人类是听不到的。
通读全段,尤其是第一段的“Chardon wondered whether learning how birds traveled could help coastal communities avoid natural disasters.(Chardon想知道,了解鸟类是如何迁徙的是否能够帮助沿海社区避开自然灾害)”可知,文章主要探讨的是鸟类能否通过感知自然灾害来预警人类。
Motivation plays a role in almost everything we do. From getting out of bed in the morning to dealing with a chore or going after a new role at work, it's finally the sense of motivation that drives us from beginning to completion of any task that life throws to us. ____36____ They can complete daily tasks without a second thought and remain efficient from morning to evening. Others, however, may struggle to find a sense of motivation for different reasons. Fortunately, here are a few ways you can introduce motivation into your daily routine.
●Create attainable goals. Feeling stressed because of a goal or a project is normal. Even if the task is a big one, you can break it down into small goals to work your way to the finish line. For example, if you have a difficult project coming up, don't wait until the last minute to begin. ____37____ This will make you feel challenged, while also allowing you to feel as if you've completed important activities.
●____38____ By rewarding yourself one thing at a time or at the end of the day, you can also teach yourself to be a more motivated person. This is about treating yourself for good work! Every time you complete a task, you know you're going to get a reward. Likewise, if you don't complete any task, you won't get a reward. ____39____
●Create positive habits over time. ____40____ In order to make motivation a positive habit, a person needs to try and start completing activities every single day. Of course, it is fine to miss a day here and there but that should be done cautiously.
A. Reward yourself.
B. Assess rewards for different achievements.
C. Some people find motivation easy to come by.
D. Instead, make a list of achievable goals for each day.
E. It usually takes around two months to develop a habit.

【答案】36. C 37. D 38. A 39. F 40. E
【解析】
【分析】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍如何培养做事的动力。
【36题详解】
根据空后“They can complete daily tasks without a second thought and remain efficient from morning to evening. Others, however, may struggle to find a sense of motivation for different reasons.(他们能不加思索地完成日常任务,从早到晚保持高效。然而,其他人可能由于各种原因要努力去找到一种动机意识)”可推知空格处在说一些有明确的动机的人。C项“Some people find motivation easy to come by.(有些人认为动力很容易得到)”符合语境。故选C项。
【37题详解】
根据空前“Create attainable goals.(设立可实现的目标)”和“For example, if you have a difficult project coming up, don't wait until the last minute to begin.(例如,你有一个困难的项目出现了,不要等到最后一刻才开始)”及空后“This will make you feel challenged, while also allowing you to feel as if you've completed important activities.(这会让你感到有挑战性,让你感觉好像你已经完成了重要的活动)”可知,作者建议要设立可实现的目标,因为这会让你觉得有意义,D项“Instead, make a list of achievable goals for each day.(相反,每一天列一个可以实现的目标清单)”符合语境。故选D项。
【38题详解】
空格处在小标题的位置,因此根据第二段和第四段小标题都是祈使句,可将答案锁定在A项和B项。再根据本段的内容,尤其是关键词“rewarding yourself”和“get a reward”可知,A项“Reward yourself.(奖励自己)”符合语境。故选A项。
【39题详解】
根据空前“By rewarding yourself one thing at a time or at the end of the day, you can also teach yourself to be a more motivated person.(通过每次或在一天结束时奖励自己一件事,你也可以教会自己成为一个更有动力的人)”和“Every time you complete a task, you know you're going to get a reward. Likewise, if you don't complete any task, you won't get a reward.(每一次,你完成任务,你知道你将得到奖励。相反,如果你不能完成任何任务,你就不会得到奖励)”可知,奖励能让自己有动力,而奖励是与你完成的任务有关,可得出时间久了,任务完成得多,奖励就多,最后奖励会刺激动力。F项“So, over time, you associate rewards with being motivated. (那么随着时间的推移,你会把奖励和动力联系在一起)”符合语境。故选F项。
40题详解】
根据空前“Create positive habits over time.(逐步养成积极的习惯)”及空后“In order to make motivation a positive habit, a person needs to try and start completing activities every single day. (为了使动机成为一种积极的习惯,一个人需要努力先完成每天的任务)”可知,养成积极的习惯需要时间逐步形成。E项“It usually takes around two months to develop a habit.(养成一种习惯通常需要两个月左右)”符合语境。

Eleven-year-old Jack was selling balloons in a park one day over a long holiday weekend when he stepped upon a wallet. After picking it up, he searched the wallet to identify the owner and found some $100 notes, some loose change and a key card inside. He didn’t hesitate to do the right thing: according to the sign on the key card, he found where the owner lived.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Chase and his mother decided to help.

The response online was great.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Chase and his mother decided to help. Originally, they wanted to give a reward to the boy who demonstrated his integrity even when he was in such a great need of money, but now they thought Jack and his family needed more help. They mapped out a strategy. It was the Internet that helped them quickly find Jack, so they turned to the Facebook again. They posted photos of Jack’s selling balloons, his story of returning the wallet and his family’s suffering on the Internet, appealing to people to help.
The response online was great. The support came rolling in, quicker and in greater quantities than expected! Jack’s story went viral. People living in the city visited the park where Jack sold balloons, and happily bought one or two. Besides, a store owner nearby offered an easy job to Jack’s father. The kind man said he was impressed by Jack. “Nothing could be shinier than an honest heart and duty for the family for a child,” he added. Indeed, an honest heart deserved all the best things in the world.
