On a day marked by freezing rain and strong winds at the 1967 Boston Marathon, the weather was the least of Kathrine Switzer’s worries. Kathrine Switzer was the only registered woman in the race. She had used the name “K. V. Switzer” to hide her gender because, at that time, females were widely believed to be physically incapable of running such a long distance.
The first few miles felt like a piece of cake. Her brief sense of freedom, however, was almost destroyed when race director Jock Semple, his face red with fury, suddenly charged at her. “Get out of this race and give me those numbers!” he yelled, lunging to rip the race numbers from her sweatshirt. Although her boyfriend, who was running with her, managed to push the director away, the public shame left her deeply upset.
For a moment, the thought of dropping out came into her mind. However, a more profound realization then took hold, and she understood that quitting was not an option. “If I quit,” she thought, “I will prove him right. Nobody will ever believe that women have the capability to run 26 miles or more. More importantly, if I quit, it will set women’s sports back instead of moving it forward…”
Fueled by this new determination, the rest of the race became a different kind of battle. She struggled against not only the freezing rain that chilled her to the bone but also the burning pain in her legs and the haunting memory of the attack. After 4 hours and 20 minutes of painful effort, she crossed the finish line, greeted not by cheers but by the curious stares of a few reporters.
The race was over, but her pursuit of change was just beginning. Her determined finish that day became a primary force in helping get women officially accepted into the Boston Marathon in 1972 and paving the way for the women’s marathon in the Olympic Games. Her number 261 has since become a symbol of fearlessness for women worldwide.
14. What did Kathrine hope to achieve in the 71st Boston Marathon?
A. Being a registered runner. B. Proving women’s athletic ability.
C. Acting as a coach to her friend. D. Providing service as a volunteer.
15. Why did Jock Semple chase Kathrine?
A. To follow her pace. B. To defeat her in the race.
C. To force her to quit. D. To protect her from others.
16. What is mainly discussed about Kathrine in the last paragraph?
A. Her leadership. B. Her ambition. C. Her popularity. D. Her influence.
17. What is the author’s attitude towards Kathrine Switzer’s run in the 1967 Boston Marathon?
A. Admiring. B. Ambiguous. C. Indifferent. D. Skeptical.

Global sea levels continue to rise, posing a significant threat to coastal populations worldwide. Faced with two major threats: ongoing sea-level rise and predictions that 36.6 million people in Asian coastal cities could face annual flooding by 2070, Luca Curci Architects proposed the Floating City as a groundbreaking solution. This design allows urban areas to adapt to rising waters, directly addressing these growing disasters.
The proposed city is a wonder of modern design. Structurally, each 25-acre unit houses up to 50,000 residents, with its buildings kept at a height of under 90 meters for stability. Using seawater-resistant materials, these structures are also designed to be flexible, much like bamboo, to resist waves. Energy-wise, the project plans to use a mix of renewable energy sources, getting power from wind, water, and the sun to power the city. A key innovation is its safety system: during extreme weather, platforms can automatically separate and regroup using a system inspired by how groups of fish avoid predators.
The project also offers significant environmental advantages. A 2023 study by the Marine Future Institute suggests that, compared to building artificial islands, this floating method protects up to 68% more of the marine ecosystem. Furthermore, its closed-loop system is expected to reduce carbon emissions by over 90%compared to a land-based city of a similar size.
However, despite these benefits, significant challenges remain. Financially, the initial construction cost is estimated to be 30% higher than traditional land-based developments. Technologically, the constant exposure to seawater damages materials, with research indicating that up to 15% of a platform’s surface could require repair annually. Moreover, comprehensive emergency plans for events such as tsunamis are still in development. “This isn’t about abandoning coasts,” notes designer Tim Fu, “but evolving with them.”
While its long-term success is still debated, the design redefines urban strength under challenging situations. Unlike rigid sea walls that fight against nature, these dynamic structures are designed to harmonize with oceanic rhythms. “Cities must learn to dance with the waves,” Curci concludes. This philosophy could transform humanity’s relationship with rising seas, turning a threat into a sustainable opportunity.
18. What drove Luca Curci Architects to come up with a new design?
A. Energy crisis. B. Potential disasters. C. Tourism expansion. D. Overcrowded cities.
19. Which of the following best describes Luca Curci’s design?
A. Adaptable and innovative. B. Fictional and renewable.
C. Eco-friendly and immovable. D. Wave-resistant and conventional.
20. A major limitation of the Floating City project is that ______.
A. its carbon emissions are higher than land-based cities
B. it negatively impacts marine life more than artificial islands
C. its structures require regular repair due to seawater exposure
D. its emergency planning for tsunamis is fully completed
21. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Ocean Protection: Life under Threat. B. Rising with the Tides: Floating Cities.
C Connecting to the Future: Eco Solutions. D. Coastal Design: Inspiration from Bamboo.
D
Humanoid robots, powered by generative AI (gen AI), hold significant potential to enhance daily life, especially in breaking down longstanding barriers for people with disabilities. However, a considerable gap exists between this exciting promise and the reality of today’s technology.
This gap is reflected in user experience. A 2023 study by the “AI for Accessibility” Institute revealed that 39% of users with disabilities feel annoyed by technology’s failure to understand them, compared to 28% of non-disabled users. Nearly half of the disabled users also reported that they must change their behaviors to use a device rather than adapting the device to fit their needs. This is true even while they acknowledge AI’s various potential benefits.
The primary reason for this issue is a lack of consideration for diverse user needs during the development process. Many AI technologies are designed without direct participation from the communities they aim to serve. To correct this, the disability community’s slogan, “Nothing about us without us,” must become a guiding principle for developers.
The solution, therefore, is to build inclusivity into the design process itself. This means that developers should gather information from the widest possible range of people to create AI with user-adaptable features, allowing customization for diverse needs. This approach treats accessibility as a core requirement from the start rather than an after-the-fact modification. In practice, this requires involving people with disabilities to share their experiences and insights when developing and testing new technologies.
A project named Euphonia offers a clear example. It aims to improve speech recognition for users with speech difficulties. Given that the AI is trained on vast amounts of data from people with non-typical speech patterns, it can accurately interpret their commands. For instance, it has helped former football player Tim Shaw communicate effectively again. The system not only understands his directions but can also speak for him in a voice remarkably similar to his own.
Ultimately, the goal is to shift our perspective. We should see these technologies not merely as tools but as extensions of the person. This means that what truly matters is closing the gap between designing for people with disabilities and designing with them.
22. What can we infer from the survey in Paragraph 2?
A. Disabled people frequently avoid using gen AI.
B. Non-disabled people have few gen AI problems.
C. Gen AI seldom fails to meet the needs of disabled users.
D. Gen AI is not user-friendly enough for disabled people.
23. The author quotes “nothing about us without us” to stress that ______.
A. users’ feedback on technologies often gets ignored
B. users’ participation matters in designing technologies
C. users’ advice hinders the development of technologies
D. users’ wishes reflect the improvement of technologies
24. What does the word underlined “modification” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Limitation. B. Creation. C. Adaptation. D. Communication.
25. The author takes the example of Euphonia to show ______.
A. technology can independently interact with disabled people
B. technology can enhance disabled people’s life quality
C. technology can help people communicate effectively
D. technology can achieve inclusivity for disabled people

It was the beginning of December. People were busy in my home. The living room, transformed into a sort of workshop, was piled with boxes, wrapping paper, and some colorful ribbons (缎带). At the center of it all was my mother, Lee-Ann.
Every year, Lee-Ann organized a Christmas charity drive, collecting donations, gifts, and food hampers (食品篮) for families in need within our community. It was a tradition she had started when I was just a toddler, fueled by her belief that everyone deserved to experience the joy and warmth of life, regardless of their circumstances.
“But, Mom, do you think we can manage? I mean, it’s amazing what you’re doing, but it’s a lot of work, and...” I asked.
She stopped wrapping and looked up at me, her gaze firm yet gentle. “Mark, do you know why I do this every year?” she asked.
I shook my head, realizing I had never really known her motivations.
“Because,” she continued, “giving brings us together. It reminds us that we’re all part of a bigger family. And if we can make even a small difference in someone’s life, then all the effort is worth it.”
Moved by her words, I nodded, understanding for the first time the depth of her commitment.
The days that followed were a lot of activities. Our family, along with a group of volunteers drawn in by my mother’s infectious enthusiasm, worked tirelessly. We wrapped gifts, packed food hampers, and arranged deliveries. My mother was everywhere at once, encouraging, and spreading cheer.
On Christmas Eve, as we loaded the last of the hampers into the van, my mother turned to me and said, “ Ready for the final round?”

【答案】 How to Cope with Stress
It is essential for us senior high students to understand and manage stress, which mainly stems from academic challenges and social expectations.
Two practical methods can help. Firstly, regular physical exercise, such as swimming or playing basketball, is highly effective. By engaging in sports, we release tension and clear our minds. Secondly, spending time on hobbies like music or gardening provides a valuable mental escape, helping us regain energy and balance.
We should keep in mind that stress management is key to our well-being. It is through these positive actions that we can build a healthier lifestyle. Let’s take this important step together.
第二节(满分25分)
【57题答案】
【答案】例文1:
I smiled, filled with a sense of pride and purpose. “Let’s do it.” As we made our rounds, delivering hampers and seeing the joy on the faces of those we helped, I felt a profound connection to the community and to my mother’s mission. Each “thank you” and every smile was a reminder of the impact of her work. Later that evening, as we sat around our own Christmas tree, my mother wrapped an arm around me. “Thank you, Mark,” she said. “For being my right-hand man.”
“But Mom,” I replied, “you’re the real superhero here.” She laughed softly. “Maybe, but every superhero needs a team. And I’ve got the best one.” That year, like every year, my mother, Lee-Ann, showed us the true meaning of giving and the power of compassion. She taught us that by coming together to support one another, we could create ripples of kindness that would extend far and wide. I was grateful to her. In my eyes, and in the eyes of our community, she was, and always will be, a superhero.
例文2:
I smiled, filled with a sense of pride and purpose. “Let’s do it.” With that, we set off on our journey to distribute the gifts and food hampers to the families in need within our community. The air was crisp with the chill of winter, but it did nothing to dampen our spirits. Each family we visited was overwhelmed with gratitude, their eyes lighting up as they received the much-needed supplies. At one stop, after helping a single mother and her children unpack the hamper, my mother placed a gentle hand on my shoulder and said, “You know, you’re a hero today.”
“But Mom,” I replied, “you’re the real superhero here.” My mother’s dedication to this charity drive went beyond mere organization and planning. It was a testament to her belief in the power of giving and the importance of community. As we completed our deliveries and returned home, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for having a mother who taught me the true meaning of Christmas—not just the presents and decorations, but the joy of giving and the warmth of being part of a larger family.
