Joyce Loaiza lives alone, but when returning to her apartment at a senior community, she often has a chat with a friendly female voice. The 81-year-old is among the first in the United States to receive the robot ElliQ made by Intuition Robotics, which has been the only device using artificial intelligence specifically designed to address loneliness of the old.
Looking like a small table light, the device has an eyeless, mouthless head. It remembers each user’s interests and their talks, helping create a special experience with each new discussion, which can be as deep as the meaning of life or as light as a small joke. “She’ll make comments like, ‘I would go outside if I had hands, but I can’t hold an umbrella,’” said Loaiza. ElliQ also plays music and provides spiritual sayings. It leads exercises, asks about the owner’s health, and gives reminders to take medicines and drink water. It can also support video calls and contact family, friends, or doctors in an emergency.
The average user interacts with ElliQ more than 30 times a day and more than 90 percent report lower levels of loneliness, Intuition Robotics CEO Dor Skuler said.
Brigham Young University professor Julianne Holt-Lunstad, who studies the effects of loneliness on health, worries that a device like ElliQ might have short-term helpful effects but it could make people less likely to seek human contact. She noted that the difficult feeling of loneliness should push people to reconnect socially.
Skuler and state officials agreed that ElliQ is not an alternative to human contact. But some older people cannot leave home or do not have many friends. Charlotte Taylor, director of an Area Agency on Aging, said the worldwide pandemic a few years back left many older people more disconnected. Her agency has provided 300 ElliQs which, she believes, help the situation. She said, “People generally like her and she makes them smile.”
4. What does Loaiza’s comments on ElliQ imply?
A. It sometimes fails to be of any help.
B. Some of its comments make no sense.
C. It is humorous and has the human touch.
D. It shows an interest in the outside world.
5. What concerns Holt-Lunstad about ElliQ?
A. Its inefficiency to ease loneliness.
B. Its failure to push people to reconnect.
C. Its replacement for human interactions.
D. Its potential for being addictive.
6. How does Taylor find ElliQ?
A. Novel. B. Popular. C. Advanced. D. Satisfying.
7. What’s the main purpose of the passage?
A. To offer some advice on removing loneliness.
B. To show us how to operate a new device.
C. To call for more care for the old.
D. To introduce a special AI device.

If you think art is just about gallery walls and Instagram likes, think again. Artolution, a global nonprofit founded by artist Max Frieder, is proving that cooperative public art can do something far more powerful: help rebuild lives in refugee (难民) camps and crisis-affected communities around the world.
Artolution partners with local teaching artists — often refugees themselves — to lead community mural (壁画) projects, sculpture workshops, and performance art in places like Bangladesh, Jordan, Uganda, South Sudan, and Ukraine. These aren’t just feel-good activities. They’re part of a larger strategy to support mental health, social inclusion (包容) , and economic empowerment (赋权).
Each project begins with group sessions where participants — often children and youth — define a shared vision. Then comes the cooperative art-making: painting murals, building musical sculptures from repurposed materials, and even learning animation and digital design.
In partnership with organizations like UNHCR and Medair, Artolution integrates its work into broader mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) programs. Their 2024 pilot in Lebanon, for example, helped trauma (痛苦经历)-affected communities reclaim public spaces through art, turning sites of pain into symbols of hope.
In the Rohingya refugee camps of Bangladesh, a young woman named Dildar — who had been unable to speak due to trauma — found her voice again through Artolution’s workshops. Her story is one of many that show how art can be a lifeline, not just a luxury. In Jordan, Syrian and Jordanian women are learning crafting and entrepreneurship (创业) skills through Artolution’s Women’s Empowerment Project. These workshops don’t just teach art — they teach independence, confidence, and marketable skills.
Artolution’s work is being recognized globally. In November 2025, Fairfield University will host an exhibition and panel discussion featuring refugee-created artworks shown at the UN Headquarters on World Refugee Day 2024. The event will highlight how art promotes healing and community across borders.
As artists, we often talk about impact. Artolution shows what that really looks like — murals painted in refugee camps, sculptures built from wastes, and performances that give voice to the voiceless. It’s a reminder that art isn’t just decoration. It’s a transformation.
So if you’re looking for inspiration, cooperation, or a way to use your skills for good, Artolution is a model worth studying — and supporting.
8. What can we learn about Artolution?
A. It focuses on organizing art exhibitions in famous galleries.
B. It employs art creation to help refugees across the world.
C. It helps refugees gain social media popularity through art.
D. It only operates in European countries to support local art education.
9. What does the underlined word “repurposed” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Remarkable. B. Rejected. C. Recycled. D. reliable.

A. To stress the importance of cooperation.
B. To illustrate the positive effects of Artolution.
C. To show the women are excellent at art creation.
D. To introduce the working procedure of Artolution.
11. What is the purpose of the text?

Starting in early March, dozens of large, modern white machines began moving through the farmland in the Netherlands. These machines are AI-enabled agricultural robots tasked with spotting special tulip bulbs (郁金香球茎) to ensure a healthy tulip season. Such a robot is one of many new autonomous tools making their way onto farms worldwide.
The robot, designed by a company called H2L Robotics, is officially called “Selector 180”. It uses GPS coordinates (坐标) to autonomously drive through tulip fields and uses cameras to take thousands of photos. An AI model then analyzes the photos and looks for the potentially diseased bulbs, which are often identifiable by distinctive red lines on the bulbs’ leaves. The robot then picks them out and separates them from the healthy ones to prevent the disease from spreading.
H2L Robotics Managing Director Erik de Jong said their AI models were trained using the knowledge of specialized tulip farmers, known as “sickness spotters”, who previously performed the laborious inspections by hand. H2L Robotics showed the farmers a number of images, and they then pointed out bulbs with signs of the virus. In this way, farmers helped train the Selector 180’s model. As more farmers participated, the Selector 180’s accuracy improved.
Machines like Selector l80 will become increasingly important. Erik de Jong noted that these human spotters are typically older individuals who have been spotting sick tulips for decades, and their population is decreasing, posing a real problem.
Farmers globally have been taking advantage of modern techniques to improve harvests with lower costs. In addition to autonomous robots, farmers are using drones (无人机), satellite imagery, and remote sensors to detect diseases or chemicals. Erik de Jong suggests systems like the Selector 180 could detect sickness in other crops, like potatoes or onions.
However, robots are not a universal solution for all farmers, at least not yet. Autonomous technology and AI require strong wireless Internet and large databases, which may not be available in some developing countries. Some fruits and vegetables can be easily damaged by machine harvesting. Moreover, it may take time and data to determine if the earlier cost of automation is profitable for farmers.
12. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By explaining a technical term. B. By describing a scene on a farm.
C. By introducing a natural phenomenon. D. By predicting future agricultural trends.
13. What is the main function of the Selector 180?
A. To record the growth cycle of tulips. B. To water crops using GPS technology.
C. To take photos of healthy tulip leaves. D. To detect and remove sick tulip bulbs.
14. What can be inferred about the AI model’s accuracy?
A. It varies greatly based on tulip species. B. It relies on human spotters’ sharp sight.
C. It benefits from the wisdom of crowds. D. It functions by checking leaf chemicals.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards the wide application of robots in agriculture?
A. Objective. B. Appreciative. C. Supportive. D. Dismissive.

Callie was a high school student. Because of her parents’ business, her family moved from London to Los Angeles, where she grew up.
Living in a quiet and warm community with her parents, Callie was very interested in various volunteer activities in the community, and almost no one in the community didn’t know her.
On a sunny afternoon, Callie was reading a poem when she heard a soft knock. She stood up at once and opened the door. Her favourite neighbor, Mrs. Baker, stood outside the door.
“I need your help, Callie,” Mrs. Baker said, “and do you know the empty lot (场地) down the street?” Callie nodded, smiling. “The place is a mess, covered with trash. The city is letting us use the lot as a community garden,” she explained. “We need help to clean up the lot on Saturday.” “Sure, Mrs. Baker!” Callie said cheerfully. “I just have nothing to do this Saturday. I will be happy to help you!” Mrs. Baker looked pleased and said, “Thanks, Callie. We want to get the garden planted before summer. By then, adults and children in our community will have had a good place to go.”
At school the next morning, Callie’s close friend Tamara was waiting for her by their classroom, who had a surprise for her. Tamara said, “My mom bought tickets to Fun World this Saturday. She has an extra one for you!” The girls had been waiting for months for the amusement park to reopen.
Callie sighed and worried over how to choose for the rest of the day. Her mother noticed her mood when she arrived home. “Did something go wrong at school?” her mother asked. Callie explained her problem. “What should I do, Mom?” Callie asked. “I know you want to go with Tamara and also want to help Mrs. Baker. Think carefully about your choice, and you need to make your own decision. But I know you will do what is best,” her mother answered.

【答案】4. C 5. C 6. D 7. D

A. Remarkable. B. Rejected. C. Recycled. D. reliable.
10. Why are the stories mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To stress the importance of cooperation.
B. To illustrate the positive effects of Artolution.
C To show the women are excellent at art creation.

However robots are not a universal solution for all farmers, at least not yet.
C It benefits from the wisdom of crowds. D. It functions by checking leaf chemicals.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards the wide application of robots in agriculture?
A. Objective. B. Appreciative. C. Supportive. D. Dismissive.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】范文
Callie spent the rest of the evening thinking about her decision. She wanted to go to Fan World, but in the end she decided that her promise to her neighbor was more important. The next day at school, Callie told Tamara that she would not be able to go to Fun World. Tamara tried to understand, but Callie could tell Tamara was disappointed. The girls hardly spoke for the rest of the week.
On Sunday, Callie met Mrs. Baker at the empty lot. “Your mother said you made a tough choice. Thank you for giving a hand today.” Callie smiled as she cleaned with a large trash bag. “Do you need any help?” a voice behind her asked. Callie turned, surprised to see Tamara. “I know you made a promise to clean up the garden, and I wanted to come help you. My mom said she could take us to Fun World next weekend.” With joint efforts, they finished the cleaning. Both Callie and Tamara realized that once a promise is made, it needs to be kept.
