Is it hard for us to get up when it’s cold? The answer is probably yes. But life is quite different for some animals at this time. They hibernate (冬眠) for a long time when it’s cold or there is no more food to eat. Let’s learn some interesting things about them.
Snails work hard to get ready for hibernation. They stay in their shells when hibernating. The corners of walls or some other places like tree trunks are good choices for them. They don’t eat anything during hibernation. When it is very cold, snails can hibernate for several months.
What about bats? Some hibernate for weeks and some for months. While hibernating, they don’t need to eat, but they need to drink water. Some bats can get moisture around them using special parts of their bodies. Others might make their waste more concentrated (浓缩) to lose less water.
When turtles hibernate, they choose places like mud (泥浆) at the bottom of rivers or lakes. These places are cool, so they can stay alive even if it’s very cold outside. And staying in the mud can keep them safe from other animals.
These animals wake up after hibernation in spring. They start moving around again, looking for food and friends. It’s amazing how they can just pause (暂停) their lives for so long and then pick up right where they left off!
9. The writer raises the question at the beginning to ________.
A. get the readers’ answers B. show it’s hard for us to get up
C. introduce animals’ hibernation D. talk about the weather in winter
10. What do snails and bats have in common when hibernating?
A. They have special body parts.
B. They choose trees to hibernate in.
C. They eat nothing during hibernation.
D. They lose more water when hibernating.
11. Which of the following is closest in meaning to “moisture” in Paragraph 3?
A. Water. B. Food. C. Air. D. Sun.
12. What is the best title for the text?

As an old Chinese saying goes, “One makes two, two makes three, and three makes all things.” This saying shows that the number three is special. It means that three is a sign of growth, making things important and interesting. Let’s find out why the number three is so magical!
In language, the number three is used in many sayings. For example, there are also popular sayings with the number three, like “Things don’t happen more than three times” meaning that something is unnecessary to happen over and over again. Another saying is “Three lifetimes of luck” which means great luck. “Three ups and three downs” means a situation with many changes. “Three-foot podium where teachers stand” means teachers are standing there to teach students and shape their futures. These sayings show how important the number three is in language.
In math, the number three is very important too. Here are some examples, the simplest shape (形状), a triangle, has three sides. Also, three points that are not in a straight line can make a circle. Remember, the three main parts of any shape are points, lines, and areas.
In science, especially in chemistry, the number three is also important. We study three things—solid, liquid, and gas (固、液、气)—to understand how things change. These three things can change from one to another. When a solid is hot enough, it becomes a liquid. When the temperature is really high, a liquid can become a gas.
The number three is much more than a number. It comes with language math, science, and culture. Whether in sayings, shapes, or science, the number three is magical and important!
13. What does “Three-foot podium where teachers stand” show?
A. Teachers often stand on a three-foot place.
B. Teachers play a key role in educating students.
C. The number three is not important in education.
D. Students need to stand three feet away from teachers.
14. In math, what is the simplest shape that has the number three in it?
A. B. C. D.
15. The writer organizes the idea of Paragraph 4 ________.
A. by telling stories B. by giving reasons
C. by giving examples D. by asking questions

Online Talk: What Is True Beauty?
Some students are sharing their ideas about beauty...
Flora, 17:

Miss Lee replies:
Well said! Looking good is a way to respect ourselves. It is important for us.
Emma,18
Two years ago, I tried many unhealthy ways to lose weight. It was a painful time. Then, my mother told me that health is the most important thing. Now I often go swimming and hiking to keep fit. I think a healthy body is true beauty.

It comes with language, math, science, and culture. Whether in sayings, shapes, or science, the number three is magical and important!
13. What does “Three-foot podium where teachers stand” show?
A. Teachers often stand on a three-foot place.
B Teachers play a key role in educating students.

A. B. C. D.

Online Talk: What Is True Beauty?
Some students are sharing their ideas about beauty...
Flora, 17:
I am a girl who loves beauty. I spend hours every day editing selfies (修自拍照). I enlarge my eyes and slim my face. Then I post my photos online and check my phone a hundred times. The more “likes” I get, the more confident I feel.
Miss Lee replies:
Editing selfies too much shows a lack (缺乏) of confidence. If you are always behind a false image (虚假形象), you cannot learn to accept your true self.
Andy, 19:
I never cared about my looks. But last week, I joined a TV show, A NEW ME. It changed my mind. After changing my look, I saw a handsome boy. In fact, looking good benefits us in different ways. It helps us express ourselves. It also builds our confidence.
Miss Lee replies
