Time: 7:00 A.M. Emily Stupi dives into (跳进) the pool. Cold water hits her, and it's hard to catch her breath. Pulling her arms through the water, Emily begins her first of eight laps (圈). She wants to complete the triathlon (铁人三项).
Emily shakes with cold as she gets out of the pool. Along with three hundred other children and adults, she heads into the one-mile run, followed by a four-and-a-half-mile bike ride.
The triathlon is being held in Glendale, Arizona, and the temperature is freezing on the late-October morning. But seeing her father's warm smile makes Emily forget about the cold.
Emily feels lucky to have her father here today. Three years ago, doctors discovered that he had skin cancer. His treatments made him feel tired and sick, but he believed he was going to get better. Emily says, “Courage is something that all people have inside, and they use it to make the world a brave and happy place. My dad showed great courage when he got cancer.”
Emily asked a lot of questions about her father's illness. Her mom says, “We had a family discussion and gave her all the facts. We talked about what cancer is and how money is raised for aid (援助) and research.”
Emily made a promise to herself and to her family that she would compete in the triathlon to raise money to help cancer patients. She trained hard for three months, swimming, running and biking several times a week. She then sent out 150 letters asking for donations (捐赠). Her dad matched the money, and Emily gave $7,000 to the American Cancer Society.
Emily says she was nervous on the day of the race. “My stomach felt weak, and the water was cold.” But Emily completed the race and lived up to her promise to help fight cancer.

A study of 3,884 students from primary schools to colleges found that examinations made 83.1 percent of primary students anxious, and more than 40 percent of high school children were out of sorts (身体不适)because of stress and anxiety.
Moreover, 75 percent of the high school respondents admitted that they had problems talking to their parents and more than 55 percent of them found it hard to associate with other people, according to the study.
It is not difficult to conclude that our children are not happy.
Today's kids are coming home from school weighed down with backpacks full of books and worksheets. They are spending hours at desk at night, seldom going outside to play and getting to bed late.
How can this be a good thing?
Homework is eating away children's time to play freely with neighborhood kids - and more importantly, their time to sleep.
Homework can enrich the education process. But like all things, too much of it may dampen (减 少)a student's enthusiasm for learning. To raise cheerful, contented and well-mannered children, parents need to put in a lot of time and effort. Their eyes should go beyond their children's preparations for tests. Children need a break too. So let them be in control of parts of the day.
8. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. High school students suffer more than primary school students.
B. Most of the students have no problem talking to their parents.
C. The teenagers suffer from heavy workload.
D. The students are not happy at home.
9. According to the text, what do the children have to do with too much homework?
A. They have to take their backpacks.
B. They have to stay up late.
C. They have to eat more.
D. They have more time to play outdoors.
10. What does the author suggest the parents do?
A. They should spend more time with their children.
B. They need to ask their children to work hard.
C. They should not care about their children's test results.
D. They need to give children more free time.
11. What is the author's attitude toward giving children too much homework?
A. Negative. B. Supportive.
C. Unconcerned. D. Uncertain
D
Around 40 million tons of electronic waste, known as e-waste, is produced every year. This includes electrical or electronic equipment that has been discarded. But where does it all go? In the US alone, 100 million mobile phones, 41 million computers and over 20 million televisions are thrown into landfills (垃圾填埋场) in a year. Even for standard waste this is a big headache, because any materials that are buried in the ground can’t be easily recovered and recycled. Recycling electronics can save energy and means that less of Earth’s natural resources need to be mined.
Failing to recycle e-waste is extremely damaging the environment due to the nature of the materials used in modern devices. While heavy metals and chemicals improve a device’s safety and user experience, they become poisonous if they’re not dealt with properly. Your old phones, Gameboys, kettles, microwaves and more can end up in landfills, leaking their harmful contents into the soil, water and air. Not only does this kill wildlife and destroy ecosystems, but the accumulation (累积) of poison can impact human health too. As heavy metals and chemicals flow into lakes and rivers, drinking water becomes polluted. These poisons spread through the soil, impacting the health of crops and animals that people also rely on.
In some western countries, e-waste isn’t hidden out of sight in landfills but is burnt in giant, open junkyards. They even ship waste electronics to other countries to deal with, and this often ends up in dumps across Africa and Asia. Workers in these places are exposed to polluted lands and chemical gas.
It is urgent that we should reduce the damaging and unsustainable side of e-waste production. Rare earth metals, some plastics and chemicals can be fed into the next generation of electronics. The steps to proper recycling of e-waste are extensive and need large investment, but more and more countries around the world are turning to e-waste recycling.
12. What does the underlined word “discarded” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Repaired. B. Protected. C. Used. D. Abandoned.
13. What can be learned from Paragraph 2?
A. E-waste has a permanent effect on the environment.
B. E-waste may do harm to both ecosystems and humans.
C. Heavy metals and chemicals are poisonous to the users.
D. Burying e-waste into landfills is an effective way to recycle.
14. How does the author describe the handling of e-waste in Western countries?
A. By providing data. B. By asking questions.
C. By listing examples. D. By offering a definition.
15. What might the author continue to talk about?
A. Solutions to destroying e-waste. B. Ways to recycle e-waste properly.
C. Applications of recycled materials. D. Investments in restoring ecosystems.

You’d better come quickly! ” The cry of a little girl and the shouting of people around her came through the line. She looked back at her daughter, who was watching TV. That’s when she understood what was going on.
Of course, she could have just put the phone down and ignored it because it had nothing to do with her. But she was a teacher; it could have been one of her students. During the call, she could imagine that the little girl who had done wrong must have been afraid to face the situation alone. After hesitating (犹豫) , she asked for the bookstore’s address and hurried over.
Just as she expected, a little girl with tears stood in the bookstore while the adults around her strictly scolded (责骂) her. She rushed up to the poor little girl, held her in her arms, and turned to the salesperson next to her, saying, “What’s the matter? You can talk to me; I’m her mother. Please stop scolding the child. ” After learning the fact, she paid the fine before taking the little girl out of the bookstore. Then the teacher saw the girl’s face, a mix of tears and fear on it.

She then took the little girl to her home. Once they arrived, the teacher comforted her, wiping away her tears and reassuring her that everything would be alright. She prepared a warm meal for the frightened child and sat with her, listening to her story and explaining that mistakes are part of growing up. The little girl, feeling the kindness and understanding from the teacher, gradually calmed down and opened up about her experiences. The teacher promised to help her sort out the situation and make sure it wouldn’t happen again. As time wore on, the two formed a bond of trust and friendship. After that, the girl graduated.
One afternoon, years later, there was a knock on the door. The teacher opened it to find a young woman standing there, holding a bouquet of flowers and looking nervous yet excited. It was the little girl she had once rescued from the bookstore, now grown up and confident. She explained how the teacher’s actions had changed her life, giving her the courage to face her mistakes and grow into a responsible adult. The teacher smiled, feeling a sense of pride and fulfillment.
