In March 2025, our school in Shantou became a low-carbon (低碳) model school. Two new green systems (系统) were put into use—rainwater reuse and rooftop solar power (屋顶太阳能). All students and teachers were excited about these changes, and also we learned how to live a greener life.
The rainwater reuse (再利用) system is amazing. It collects rain from the playground and building roofs. After cleaning the rainwater, the system uses it to water the school’s trees and flowers and even to wash toilets in our school. Our teacher told us this system saves about 5,000 cubic meters of water every year. We also have solar boards on the roof. They turn sunlight into electricity to light up our classrooms and power the computers. Now we use less electricity from the city.
To help us learn more, the school holds a “low-carbon class” every Friday. We talk about how to save water and electricity in daily life. We also keep a “green score”—if we remember to turn off lights or reuse water, we get points. Many students now take their own water bottles to school instead of buying plastic ones.
Our classmate Lily said, “These changes in 2025 make our school a better place. We not only save resources (资源) but also learn to protect the Earth. It’s easy and meaningful to live a low-carbon life.” We all feel proud that our school is doing its part for the environment.

In 2025, the national student science competition “Underwater Unmanned System Challenge” was held in Wuzhen, Zhejiang. Organized by the Ministry of Education and the Oceanic Administration, it got over 500 students from 130 teams across 28 provinces to use technology to protect the ocean.
The competition’s theme, “Protect Coral Reefs Through Ecological Monitoring,” shows the importance of coral reefs (珊瑚礁)—known as “the rainforest of the sea,” they are home to 25% of ocean life and protect coasts. However, more than half of the world’s coral reefs have been damaged (损害) by climate change, water pollution and human activities, making technology-based protection necessary.
During the three-day event, students faced teamwork challenges like working together on programming and machine design (设计) to improve robots. These robots needed to go down 10 meters deep to collect information on water temperature, PH value and the number of corals, as well as practice repairing damaged reefs with mechanical arms. The event also encouraged green practices, such as reusing robot parts and sharing survey results with ocean protection organizations.
Jiangsu’s ninth-grader Ni Jingxing shared, “I used to think math and physics were just textbook knowledge, but building robots—especially solving teamwork problems—showed they can solve real environmental problems.” This experience woke up his interest in ocean science.

Our school held a wonderful sports meeting last month, which has become one of the most unforgettable events for Grade 9 students this year. All classes took an active part in different competitions, including track events like 100-meter running and 800-meter long-distance running, as well as field events such as high jump, long jump, and shot put. Exciting team games like relay races and tug-of-war also brought everyone closer. I took part in the 800-meter race and the 4×100-meter relay race with three classmates, and we decided to try our best.
Before the sports meeting, we practiced hard after school for two whole weeks. Every afternoon, we ran on the playground to build strength (力量) and improve speed. Our PE teacher gave useful advice: he taught me how to control breathing during long-distance running and showed our relay team how to pass the baton (接力棒) smoothly. Though we felt tired sometimes, we encouraged each other and never gave up.
On the event day, there were a lot of colorful flags on the playground, and cheers from teachers and students filled the air. Lila was a 13-year-old girl who loved painting more than anything else. She spent every free minute drawing flowers, animals, and scenes from her daily life. Her biggest dream was to enter a city’s painting competition and win a prize.
But Lila’s classmates often made fun of her. “Your paintings are too simple,” they said. “You’ll never win the competition.” Even her cousin told her, “Painting is just a hobby—you should pay attention to your studies instead.” Lila felt upset sometimes, but she never stopped holding her paintbrush. She practiced painting every evening, and she asked her art teacher for advice to improve her skills.
When the competition notice came out, Lila took part in it without thinking twice. She spent two weeks working on her artwork—a painting of her hometown’s river at sunset. She carefully mixed colors to show the warm light of the sun and added small details (细节) like birds flying and children playing by the water.
On the day of the results, Lila went to the show nervously. When she saw her painting hung on the wall with a “First Prize” medal, she couldn’t believe her eyes. Her classmates and cousin were all surprised by her success. They apologized (道歉) for doubting her, and Lila felt proud of herself for not giving up.

根据短文内容,选择正确答案。

33. How do the solar boards help the school?

C. They cool the classrooms. D. They give green scores.
34. What do students do in the “low-carbon class”?
A. Fix solar boards. B. Clean the reuse system.
C. Learn to save resources. D. Sell plastic bottles.
35. What’s the main idea of the passage?

B. The school’s 2025 green changes and their influences.
C. It’s about why we need to save water.
D. The history of low-carbon schools.

During the three-day event students faced teamwork challenges like working together on programming and machine design (设计) to improve robots.
After the exciting competition, 12 teams won. They will join China’s national training team for more practice and then stand for China at the 2026 international “Sea Bass” Underwater Challenge in Sydney, competing with young people from over 30 nations.

During the 800-meter race, my legs felt heavy halfway, but my classmates’ loud shouts gave me great strength. I kept going and finally won the third place. Our relay team also did well and got the second prize!
After the sports meeting, all players took group photos and shared joys. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: success never comes easily. It needs hard work, effort, and strong teamwork. The sports meeting was more than a competition—it let us challenge ourselves, make friends, and grow stronger in mind and body. I will always remember this exciting and meaningful event.

Lila’s experience tells us that no matter how many people doubt us, we should follow what we love and work hard.
