Attention, please! Sunshine Language Learning Center will set a course and it will teach pure (纯正的) British English. Maybe you’ve known some British expressions are quite different from American ones. British people use “autumn” for “fall”, “film” for “movie”, “holiday” for “vacation”, “garden” for “yard”, etc.
There are more typical expressions that you may not know. Here are Mr Bean’s examples.
“Cheers” or “Thanks”
British people use “Cheers” much more often than “Thanks”. “Cheers” is often used by them in daily informal conversations for small favours (帮助), such as opening doors for others, lending somebody a pen, showing strangers ways ...
Present Perfect Tense or Simple Past Tense
It’s more common to hear the British say “Have you done your work?” than “Did you do your work?” They like present perfect tense better than simple past tense.
...
...
Are you interested in it? Do you want to learn? You can learn British English well if you put much effort into it. We have some native British English teachers with much experience to help you. The course will be open in the coming summer holiday.
The price of the course is not very high: ¥500 for one person; ¥900 for two (10% off); ¥1,200 for three (20% off); for four or more, 30% off.
For further details, call 400-810-2345 or search http://www.BEcourse.com. Come and join us!

3.If you and three of your classmates have decided to take the course, how much will you pay altogether?
A.¥1,200. B.¥1,400. C.¥1,500. D.¥1,600.
When Mom told me that she had bought tickets for the whole family, I started to wonder if I should have been honest about not being chosen to play in the show. They were so excited for me and everyone asked about it. I was unsure whether they would care as much if they knew I was only working behind the scenes. I liked stage crew (剧务), after all.
No one could imagine how much I was in love with acting. I totally believed there was chance I would be the one who saved the show if somebody was absent. Once Susan missed rehearsal (彩排) for some reason and I volunteered to stand in and read her lines.
The show day came.
I woke up at a quarter to five. I had been so excited after the rehearsal the day before that I didn’t get any sleep at all. The lights and curtains (帷幕) the stage crew put up changed the gym (体育馆) into a real theater. Even though I didn’t have to wear theatrical makeup, I did anyway. The smell of the makeup paint was enough to throw me into another world.
We had two shows that day, one in front of my schoolmates and one in the evening for the public. During the school show, someone threw a paper plane onto the stage (舞台), and the director had to stop the show and teach everyone about proper audience (观众) manners.
Mr. Ellison said, “Live show is challenging. You just have to roll with it. You’ll get used to it. Make sure you’re here by six tonight, and tell the one you’re bringing to come early for good seats. We’re almost sold out.”
My sister Diana dropped me off at 5:50 p.m.. The stage crew didn’t have to be there until 6:30, but I was excited, and I still hadn’t told my parents I wouldn’t be on stage. They could find it out when they saw the show — even mine behind the scenes helps make our dreams come true. I would deal with it then.
(— Adapted from A New and Distant Star)

When I got to school this morning, I ran into Wendy. She greeted me with a big yawn (哈欠). “Sorry, I didn’t sleep well last night. Two mosquitoes (蚊子) kept me up. I tried to catch them but had no luck. I hate them!”
I showed a cartoon (on the right) to Wendy. She laughed. “That’s funny. Now my sleepiness is all gone! Who drew this?” “Xiao Lin, or Lin Dihuan,” I said. “I like his cartoons. They lift you up when you’re feeling down.”
Xiao Lin loved painting from an early age. But his family was poor. Instead of getting a professional (专业的) art education, the boy taught himself to draw at the age of fourteen. He bought books and magazines from recycling centers and copied the pictures from them. He began drawing for magazines when he was in middle school. In college, Lin studied medicine at his father’s suggestion, but his love for art remained. After graduation, he chose to teach art instead of working as a doctor. Lin hasn’t let his medical studies go to waste, though. His knowledge about medicine often inspires (赋予灵感) new ideas for his artworks.
Lin spends a lot of time drawing every day. While his funny cartoons have received widespread attention and inspired many, they are just a small part of his work. Lin’s drawings often cover traditional Chinese culture. Many people got to know him through his ink-and-brush paintings (水墨画) of China’s 24 Solar Terms (二十四节气). The artist has also used cartoons to introduce young people to ancient Chinese classics. As some of these works have been published and displayed in the West, they have also made foreigners interested in Chinese culture.
No matter what Lin draws, you feel relaxed when you see it. Sometimes, we just need to turn to artworks like his for a different take on the world.
Last night, I fought hard with a mosquito, and it ended in a draw (平局) — I lost sleep while it missed its meal.
1.What happened to Wendy after she looked at Lin’s cartoon?
A.She felt even sleepier. B.She fell asleep quickly.
C.She became wide awake. D.She decided to learn painting.
2.What did Lin do when he was fourteen years old?
A.He learnt drawing by himself. B.He copied online cartoons.
C.He practised drawing with artists. D.He attended an art school.
3.According to paragraph 4, how do Lin’s drawings influence people?
A.They inspire them to learn western culture.
B.They help them to learn the Chinese language.
C.They encourage them to visit Chinese schools.
D.They make them curious about Chinese culture.
4.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.A Close Look at Chinese Art B.A Comic Take on the World
C.A Guide to Drawing Comics D.A Day in the Life of Lin
Dreams. Ambitions (抱负). Everyone has them.
Some people dream of winning a big prize. Others want to travel around the world… Ellie Stevenson dreams of being a singer.
Ellie is a seventeen-year-old girl. She lives in a quiet village in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. She goes to school, has a part-time job in her Dad’s shop and enjoys spending time with her best friends, Cassie and Skye. This is the story of Ellie.
“Pencils down, please!”
I quickly try to finish writing one last sentence but Miss Jones sees me. “Ellie Stevenson! The exam is over!”
“Please, Miss… another thirty seconds… five?”
“Humph!” she says and takes my paper.
There is nothing that I can do now. I hate biology! I dream of being a singer, like Murphy. I want to study music at A level.
“You can’t study music!” said Dad when I told him at the start of the sixth grade, in September last year. “If you want a good career, you need to study science.”
“He’s right. The sciences are important, Ellie,” agreed Skye. “I’m going to study chemistry, biology, physics and math.”
“Boring! Why don’t you study French like me?” suggested Cassie. “Mr. Lake, the French teacher, is great!”
I never told anyone about my dream after that.
Now here I am trying not to fall asleep as Miss Jones finishes collecting the answer papers after the biology exam. I’m really tired. I close my eyes. I only want to rest for a minute. But soon I’m not in the exam room…
I’m on stage in front of thousands of fans. My fans! They are shouting my name… I start to play the guitar and they all cheer… they sing the words to my latest hit…
“Ellie! Ellie!” Miss Jones’s angry voice wakes me up.
“Eh…? Sorry?”
“It’s time to go home!” she says, shaking her head.
I’m the only person left in the room. Everyone else has already gone.
I was dreaming… again.
I feel stupid as I pick up my bag and walk towards the exit.
Outside, it’s raining. It’s spring but the sky is grey and miserable (令人难受的). It seems like it will rain forever and I haven’t got an umbrella.

Sydney McLaughlin was perhaps born to be an athlete. Sydney’s father tried out for the 1984 Olympics in the 400-meter race, while her mother was also a runner. She met Sydney’s father in college when she was training with the men’s track team (田径队) because there was no women’s team. Following their parents’ footsteps, Sydney McLaughlin and three other children in her family started running at an early age. Her father finally had to give up the sport because of a serious heart problem.
So how did Sydney get into running as a young child? It was the promise of a chocolate bar at the age of 6 that motivated (激励) her in the beginning. Sydney’s dad told her that if she won a kids’ race, she would get a chocolate bar. When she was 7, she did just that. She said she stayed with running after that so that she could continue to get chocolate!
At 16, Sydney qualified (取得资格) for the Rio 2016 Olympics. At that time, she was the youngest to run for the USA track team in 36 years. Sadly, she didn’t make it to the final. Three years later at the World Championship, the young athlete won gold in the 4 × 100-meter relay and silver in the 400-meter hurdles (跨栏). Then in the 2020 Olympics, she won gold in both races.
Sydney said, “Everyone has their own hurdles, and you don’t know who’s getting over them faster than anybody else. It’s really about devoting yourself to what you have control of.” Her ability to do that is considered one of her greatest strengths.
Last July, Sydney lowered her time to 50.68 seconds in 400-meter hurdles, breaking the world record four times in two years! When asked how she had achieved it, she replied that her faith (信念) had given her the strength to achieve that much.
As amazing as all of this is, she never stops looking for ways to improve. And as Sydney looks forward to the 2024 Paris Olympics, everyone else looks forward to watching her run into history.

3.How does the writer introduce Sydney’s achievements?
A.By listing facts and numbers. B.By showing others’ praise.
C.By comparing with others. D.By interviewing her fans.
4.What would be the best title for the passage?

C.Interest is the best teacher D.Running is in her blood
Reading can open a world of joy for students, and one North Carolina principal wants to spread that moment of happiness to them on their birthday.
Glenn Cook, principal of Pleasant Ridge Elementary School in Gastonia, North Carolina, came up with an idea to give each student a book on their birthday. With about 900 students attending Pleasant Ridge, it is not an easy task, but Cook says he’s ready to “go big or go home”. He is going to include every student in this project.
“I didn’t have a lot of kids’ books,” said Cook. So I put the idea online, and I wanted to see if any of my trends needed to clean off their bookshelves at home. I was hoping to get maybe 50 books for the first round of birthdays. The number of books Cook received was surprising. “We’re probably getting maybe 500 books,” said Cook. There are so many books taking up space all over his office.
The idea started when Cook attended a professional development event. He asked another principal for advice. This principal told him that at her school, she gave her students a pencil on their birthday.
He wanted to take this idea to the next level, so he began reading himself. He came up with the idea that a principal should share his excitement and love for reading. The goal of giving these books to students is to find a book that’s right for each one, so they can experience the happiness of reading.
Local businesses have joined the project to donate books. Michelle Clear, a parent at Pleasant Ridge, decided to support Cook’s project and offer her store as a book donation center. “Reading just opens up so many ways in kids’ lives,” Clear noted. Hopefully, this will get across the nation to call on more people to donate books.

3.What is the biggest problem when carrying out the project?
A.Not enough money. B.Not enough kids’ books.
C.No support from parents. D.Not enough space to put so many books.
4.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.A principal is carrying out a big project.
B.Reading makes students and principal close.
C.A principal gives students a special birthday gift.
D.Reading brings students happiness and excitement.
My five-year-old son befriends the woman. It starts with voices in the yard. When I come out to check on Daniel, his face is pressed on the fence(篱笆).
The woman says, “You wait right here. I’ll be right back.”
She returns with a saw(锯子). There’s a whirring. A circle in the wooden fence drops out of sight.
“Dad! Sandy just drilled out a hole in the fence so Sandy and I can talk!” Daniel spins around.
I hadn’t known her name was Sandy. We’ve lived here a month before Daniel was born.
Daniel’s and Sandy’s murmuring voices continue. Whenever Daniel is outside, he circles near the fence that isn’t a fence any more. Some days my son just goes to stand at the hole, yelling, “Sandy! Saaaaandyyyyy!” Sometimes I hear bits of their talk.
“We painted a ghost at school.”
Or: ‘‘Wheeler and Jackson were playing football, and they told me I couldn’t play.”
“That wasn’t very nice,” says Sandy. “Did that hurt your feelings? Did you let them know that?”
I can’t hear how he replies. A moment of envy runs through me. He never talks about his school things with me.
Daniel and Sandy not only keep chatting through the hole, they also exchange gifts.
A coloring book, then a Hot Wheels car. It’s unclear what Daniel gives Sandy in return.
One afternoon, I hear Sandy’s voice floating over the top of the fence with the hole.
“I thought maybe Daniel could come for a play date.”
We ring the bell on Sandy’s porch. She’s a middle-aged woman with smiling eyes.
Sandy’s yard is sweet with the smell of flowers. We have a pleasant after moon with Sandy, my son’s adult friend, the first friend Daniel has made on his own. We’ve passed through the hole in the fence.
A month later, Sandy leaves to care for her mother in Kansas. She left behind a box of presents: a coloring book, sidewalk chalk, the missing orange part in the Hot Wheels track. When I look at Daniel, he’s looking down at his shoes. He sometimes wanders down to the fence. Instead of calling “Sandy! Saaaaandyyyyy!” he cries. “Hello! Helloooooo!”

Conner Wight is in his final year at university, but he still has many classes to attend. He is studying Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson—and how to wash clothes.
The 21-year-old is preparing for his post-college life. He realized it enough to know how to understand literature. So he signed up for(报名)a class on “adulting”. He has been learning many basic life skills.
There are now thousands of “adults in training”. Wright is only one of them. Not only college students but many others are discovering they need help. Some middle schools have scheduled(预定)adulting classes.
But why don’t parents teach their children these life skills? We interviewed many students. Their parents, they say, care a lot about test scores. Almost everything else is considered unimportant. As a result, colleges are filled with students with perfect test scores. Many of them, however, don’t know how to cook.
Sometimes, students come up with their own solutions(解决方法). Neither Belle Lau nor Jenny Zhou felt fully prepared for life away from home when they arrived at their university. But by their second year there, they had learned to live on their own. The two noticed that many of their classmates had been experiencing similar difficulties. They decided to set up an adulting course. When it was first offered in 2019, its 30 spots(名额)quickly filled up. 70 students had to be refused. Last year, there were more courses, but Lau and Zhou still had to turn down 100 students.
Lau says that she and Zhou don’t have all the answers for their students. That is in fact part of becoming an adult. As kids, we could wait for our parents to step in and take care of things for us. But after we become an adult, that’s no longer available to us. When difficulties appear, we must depend on ourselves to “hunt for” a solution.
1.Why did Conner Wright attend a class on “adulting”?
A.To improve his test scores in literature. B.To find solutions to problems with study.
C.To know students from different countries. D.To develop abilities of living on his own.
2.How many students signed up for Lau and Zhou’s adulting course in 2019?
A.30. B.70. C.100. D.130.
3.What does the underlined word available in the last paragraph mean?
A.Easy to get. B.Hard to have. C.Easy to decide. D.Hard to imagine.
4.What can be the best title of the article?
A.Away from Problems B.Back to Basics C.Off to College D.Just for Friends
Jin Ying, 25, is a lover of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). She took part in a three-month training course on acupuncture and tuina (针灸推拿) at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine during the winter of 2023.
Jin’s life has been different since the training. She changed her life habits after learning the Five Elements theory (五行学说). For example, she avoids sweating (出汗) too much during winter exercise because TCM suggests that people should slow down during cold weather. For Jin, learning these skills and theories wasn’t about becoming a TCM doctor but about accepting a new lifestyle.
A survey conducted by China Youth Daily showed that 933 out of 1,000 young people surveyed had tried different kinds of TCM treatments. “I’ve noticed an increasing number of young people coming to me for neck and back pain, which is usually related to the elderly,” said Ma Huifang, a TCM doctor at Guoyitang, a TCM hospital. According to Ma, young people often prefer TCM over Western medicine because of its usefulness.
Some people may wonder why TCM treats the same illnesses with different prescriptions (处方). “This is actually a strength of TCM, not a weakness, as it allows a more accurate (精准) treatment for different patients,” explained Ma.
The younger generations are warmly welcoming TCM, and at the same time, it is also good for young people. As Jin pointed out, “TCM helps young people understand and learn why it’s considered a treasure of our Chinese culture.”
1.Why did Jin Ying decide to take the training course on acupuncture and tuina?
A.To save energy during winter. B.To be a TCM doctor in the future.
C.To practice a new healthy lifestyle. D.To spread traditional Chinese culture.
2.What is the advantage of TCM, according to Ma Huifang?
A.It’s cheaper compared to Western medicine.
B.It uses the same prescription for different illnesses.
C.Its influence happens more slowly than Western medicine.
D.Its treatment for different patients is special and personalized.
3.What does the underlined word “it” refer to?

Bedtime comes every night, but what if you're not feeling sleepy? Should you still head to bed even if you know you’ll just lie there with your eyes open? This problem has been around for as long as people have been trying to get a good night’s sleep.
In order to find the best solution for you, it’s necessary to find out what’s keeping you awake at night. You might be excited about something that happened during the day. Perhaps you’re nervous about what’s coming up the next day. Maybe you don’t like sleeping alone in your room. All of these could be reasons for your sleeping problems. However, there are several steps you can take to help you solve them.
One thing that can help is talking to a parent or another trusted adult about what you're worrying about at bedtime. For example, if you’re nervous about taking a test, or upset about having too much stress, it can really help to tell somebody. Knowing that someone has listened to you can ease (宽慰) your mind, helping you to get a good rest.
Sleeping in a comfortable bed in a quiet and cool room is another good choice. If there’s anything in your room that makes you feel uneasy or anxious (焦虑) at night, such as a picture that looks strange in the dark, or a noisy tap in the bathroom, be sure to ask your parents to move or fix it. Also, make sure to keep electronics like mobile phones or iPads away from your bed. They can keep you excited, and make it harder for you to fall asleep.
If you are usually restless around bedtime, doing certain things to relax beforehand (预先) may help you fall asleep. Try to take more time to wind down by taking a warm bath, or listening to music for at least 10 minutes before you go to sleep. It’s also helpful to follow a bedtime routine (惯例) and go to sleep at the same time every night. This way, your body will receive the message that it’s almost time to sleep. Your body will learn to start feeling tired, and it’s worth the time and effort to develop a good sleeping habit.
1.Which of the following could be a reason for feeling sleepless?
A.Feeling easy at bedtime. B.Being nervous about something.
C.Sleeping in a cool and quiet room. D.Enjoying a peaceful environment.
2.What does the writer suggest doing if you’re worried about something at bedtime?
A.Staying up late to think about it more. B.Trying to solve the problem yourself.
C.Talking to a parent or another trusted adult. D.Forgetting about the worry and going to sleep.
3.What does the phrase “wind down” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Get relaxed. B.Keep clean. C.Stay awake. D.Feel sleepy.
4.What is the purpose of following a bedtime routine?
A.To improve your health. B.To stay up late into the night.
C.To have more energy during the day. D.To help the body know it’s time to sleep.
5.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A.B. C. D.
Put on your 3D glasses and the dinosaur jumps off the screen. There are butterflies in the air around you. How does this happen?
At a 3D movie, it seems that a red ball is jumping right at you. But the ball isn’t truly leaving the screen. What’s happening is that your brain and eyes work together to work out the ball’s size, color, shape, and movement. It looks real, but it’s an illusion! Our eyes are like video cameras. They notice every detail of the red ball and how it moves. At the same time, our brain (大脑) guesses what will happen next. That’s why we think the red ball is flying straight at us!
But how do 3D movies make objects seem like they’re floating (飘浮) in the air? They trick our brains! Here’s how it works: the movie is filmed using two cameras with lenses (镜头) placed close to each other, just like our eyes. When the movie plays, these two pictures are shown on the screen at the same time. Each picture is a bit different from the other because each camera catches its own view. The two pictures overlap (重叠), and that’s why they look unclear without 3D glasses.
This is where the special glasses come in. A 3D movie uses two kinds of light: horizontal (side-to-side) light and vertical (up-and-down) light. The glasses help your left eye see the picture using horizontal light and your right eye see the picture using vertical light. Then, your brain mixes the two pictures into one. That’s when the magic of 3D happens!
With 3D glasses, the experience can be fun and exciting. Just remember that it’s all a clever trick to make you feel like you’re right there in the movie!

①More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today, such teaching tools as iPads are used in a lot of courses, including language, history and science.
②Many teachers are supporters of using iPads in language learning. They say that students now have much more time for discussion in the classroom. Instead of spending valuable class time listening to texts or watching teaching videos, students can do this on their own and come to class prepared for discussion.
③The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a conversation only once and understand it, so they can save time for doing other things. Other students, however, might need to listen to the same conversations again and again to understand it. Using iPads is especially helpful to students who are learning a language at different paces.
④The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using iPads is a more enjoyable way to learn (such as listening to stories and watching movies) . The class has become much more interesting and creative.
⑤There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can pay more attention to the material and learn more. Teaching notes are stored in their iPads and are easy to find. Some students spend more time studying now. “I can listen to my language material or watch teaching videos on the bus, instead of having to wait until I get home,” a student explained.
⑥Many adults complain that technologies such as iPads are doing harm to students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate students from each other. If a student spends more time watching videos on an iPad, he will have fewer opportunities to have face-to-face communication with others.
⑦However, technologies are already a part of most students’ day-to-day lives. As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams. Education needs to make changes with the times as technology is playing an important part. We should look forward to a wonderful future when iPads and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.
1.What does the expression “at their own pace” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.According to their own timetable. B.Without their teachers’ help.
C.Because of their wonderful goals. D.Against their parents’ hope.

①Artwork is lovely to look at, but did you know that seeing a real work of art instead of a photo of it makes people more emotional?
②Neuroscientists (神经学家) recently carried out a study at the Mauritshuis museum. The museum is home to Girl with a Pearl Earring by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer, which was painted in 1665.
③The researchers used eye-tracking equipment (设备) and a brain scanner called EEG which can record someone’s brain activity to notice how people reacted to several paintings. First, the volunteers were asked to look at the real paintings on display, and then at posters of the artworks in the museum shop.
④The study found that their emotional response was 10 times stronger when they looked at the real paintings. The most active part of the brain while looking at the artworks was the area that controls people’s personal identity and consciousness (意识).
⑤The team found that the group reacted especially strongly to Girl with a Pearl Earring. Results showed the volunteers experienced something called a “sustained attentional loop” (持续注意循环)—but they only had it while looking at that particular (特定的) painting. The volunteers’ attention was first attracted to the girl’s left eye, then her mouth, then to her pearl earring. This eye movement repeated in a loop, which meant that people looked at the painting for longer.
⑥The director of the museum, Martine Gosselink, said that the study shows how important it is to go and see art in real life, whether it’s paintings, photography or dancing. She added, “It really helps to develop your brain.” The researchers said it would be interesting to do the same study on other famous paintings, such as the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci.

C.To explain the power of real art.
D.To introduce the art value of Girl with a Pearl Earring.
Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire.
Since the Warring States period (战国时期), the ancient people loved sweets and developed methods of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, there was huge progress in the technology of sugar making. And sugar, the precious product once only served to the emperors and princes, also went into common people’s homes. With the cultural and economic (经济的) development of Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting appeared.
Sugar painting is different from normal painting. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is done.
★ .The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, few people seem to be willing to pass down the art except those aging sugar painters.
For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has pulled the art down into people’s daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual support of the ancient people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China. Therefore, the art should be remembered, missed and passed down.
1.What big question does Paragraph 2 answer?
A.What is sugar painting? B.Why is sugar painting produced?
C.When is sugar painting used? D.How has sugar painting developed?
2.Why should sugar painters make the work very quickly?
A.To show their excellent skills. B.To avoid syrup becoming hard.
C.To protect the spoon and the table. D.To reduce people’s waiting time.
3.Which of the following can be put in ★ ?
A.So more and more people fall in love with this folk art.
B.However, it’s a pity that this folk art is dying.
C.Gradually, sugar painters have become popular.
D.Therefore, the process of making sugar is too difficult.
4.What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A.To introduce the achievement in sugar painting.
B.To tell how traditional Chinese culture influences people’s life.
C.To spread the traditional Chinese culture of sugar painting.
D.To explain how sugar painting is produced.
①As the Mid-Autumn Festival came on October 6th, 2025, Suzhou was full of special celebrations that mixed old traditions with new ideas.
②The city’s most eye-catching place was surely the 3-meter-tall moon display at the Lingering Garden. It was called “Poems Written to the Moon,” and visitors took photos under the poems hung from sweet-scented osmanthus trees (桂花树).
③At Suzhou Museum, the“Moon Over the River” festival brought old customs to life. Families made mooncakes with traditional tools, while children tried making bamboo lanterns and jade rabbit books. In the evening, shadow plays told classic stories like Chang’e Flying to the Moon, making both local people and tourists happy. The museum’s courtyard was filled with folk music, including the famous Jiangnan folk song Moon Cake sung in the local Suzhou dialect.
④High-tech fun was waiting at Suzhou Amusement Park. There, visitors enjoyed “Shan Hai Jing” themed lantern shows. Students in Hanfu joined free lantern parades, and everyone felt surprised at the AR lanterns. These lanterns lit up the night sky. Near Jinji Lake, the “AR Starry Sky” activity let people “touch” virtual stars while walking along the lakeside. It created magical moments for both kids and adults.
⑤Eco-friendly celebrations were everywhere too. Following new national rules, local bakeries used mooncake boxes that are easy to break down naturally. These boxes had only three layers. This showed how traditions can help protect the environment.
⑥From cultural activities to high-tech fun, Suzhou’s Mid-Autumn celebrations proved that some traditions just get brighter as time goes on.

While doing homework, Seoyoung Jun closed one eye and successfully picked up her pencil. She realized that directing herself in a 3D space didn’t require both eyes. This surprised her so much that she did some research. And she learned the brain can deal with 3D information with poor vision (视力) or even without any vision. Then the idea for Mind Beacon was born.
It uses a thin line of light to collect 3D information about the positions of walls, furniture and other things. Then the light sends that information back to Mind Beacon, which then raises pins (大头针) to show where those obstacles (障碍物) are. Then blind people can “read” the positions of those pins to understand the positions of obstacles in front and walk around them.
When the invention worked for the first time, Seoyoung didn’t believe it. She’d been up all night working on it. To guarantee that there wasn’t a mistake, she turned it off and started it up again and again. It had been seven long months of research and testing. Now this tool can help disabled people create a picture of their living areas in their minds.
The heart of Mind Beacon is a 3D depth sensor (传感器) that’s connected to a computer. That computer can control three motors (电动机). Each motor controls a pin that can move up and down. When the sensor finds an obstacle, the pin rises. It can rise to three different heights. Each height shows the height of the obstacle. Someone who runs their hand over the pins can tell where the obstacle is and its height.
Mind Beacon won Seoyoung a place at the world’s high school research competition. Right now, she wants to improve it. She imagines in the future it can be connected to a smart phone, with more pins to show the exact height of the obstacle. It will feel like a map showing the location and size of the obstacle in front.
1.What made Seoyoung have the idea of inventing Mind Beacon?
A.The blind’s good sense of touch.
B.The idea of winning a competition.
C.Her wish to bring convenience to the disabled.
D.Her ability to pick up a pencil without full vision.
2.How does Mind Beacon help the blind?
A.By making it easier for them to use the Internet.
B.By letting them know the positions of obstacles.
C.By teaching them to describe dangerous obstacles.
D.By training them to remember maps of their living areas.
3.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.How Mind Beacon works. B.How Mind Beacon was made.
C.The role of computers in Mind Beacon. D.The effect of Mind Beacon on the blind.
4.Which of the following best describes Seoyoung?
A.Caring but shy. B.Helpful but careless.
C.Talented and humorous. D.Creative and hard-working.

It’s more common to hear the British say “Have you done your work?” than “Did you do your work?” They like present perfect tense better than simple past tense.
...

A.Her father used to be an athlete. B.There are three children in her family.

1.What can we learn from “go big or go home” in Paragraph 2?
A.Cook wants to collect many great books. B.Cook has made up his mind to run this project.

A.To encourage students to read. B.To advertise his school online.
C.To celebrate students’ birthdays. D.To help friends clean the bookshelves.

One day, Daniel receives Sandy’s postcard. They write frequently, warmly.

【答案】1.D 2.C 3.A 4.B

4.最佳标题题。通读全文可知,本文讲述很多学生只注重考试成绩,而缺乏基本生活技能,针对这一情况出现了一些相关的培训课程,故文章最佳标题应该是“回归基本的技能”。故选B。
