“How good these will be with my bread and butter,” thought George. He picked up all of the strawberries. As he was taking the first strawberry to his mouth, he remembered his sick mother, alone in her dark, cold room in the village.
Thinking of this, he put the strawberry back. “Shall I keep them for her?” he asked himself. He thought how nice they would be for her, but he was still looking at them with a longing eye.
“I will eat half, and take the other half to her,” he said. He divided them into two piles, but each pile looked so small. He put them together again. “I will only eat one,” he thought.

A new robot helps plants breed (育种), producing more food. Chinese scientists have created the world’s first robot, GEAIR, that can finish all the steps of plant breeding. This is important for hybrid breeding (杂交育种).
Hybrid breeding helps plants grow stronger and produce more food. Yuan Longping created hybrid rice that has fed many Chinese people. According to the report, hybrid breeding usually means taking away the stamens (雄蕊) of the female plant and then putting pollen (花粉) from the male plant onto the female plant. This helps the new plants get the best qualities from both parents. For example, if you mix a male plant that doesn’t get sick easily with a female plant that makes a lot of fruit, you can get a new plant that has both of these great qualities.
However, hybrid breeding needs workers to move pollen from one flower to another again and again in a short time. This work takes a lot of time and energy.
GEAIR solves the problem. It uses AI visual recognition and positioning technology (视觉识别和定位技术) to move among crops. After finding flowers, it uses robotic arms to do cross-pollination and finish the whole process.
Building the robot was difficult because leaves get in the way, and flowers are very small. Traditional computer rules cannot easily find them in real time. To fix this, the research team trained a new model with 12,800 pictures of flowers. With this model, GEAIR can pollinate each flower in 15 seconds at a cost much lower than a worker’s yearly pay.
40. What is hybrid breeding according to Paragraph 2?
A. It is a tool that farmers use to pick fruits from plants more quickly.
B. It is a kind of rice that can feed a large number of people in the world.
C. It is a method to help make plants grow bigger by giving them more water.
D. It is a way to mix male and female plants for new ones with the best qualities.
41. Which of the following can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. GEAIR can only be used in the breeding of hybrid rice.
B. GEAIR will make plant breeding much faster and cheaper in the future.
C. Hybrid breeding will not be needed anymore with the help of GEAIR.
D. The research team spent only 15 seconds training the flower recognition model.
42. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Difficulties in Creating GEAIR.
B. An Introduction to Hybrid Breeding.
C. The World’s First Plant Breeding Robot.
D. The History and Development of GEAIR.

In Tongren, Guizhou, there’s a special embroidery: leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉刺绣). Pictures of birds, rivers and mountains are always embroidered on dried leaves. It is one of China’s main embroidery styles. It first appeared in the Song Dynasty (960—1279). It was used to share messages among ethnic groups (民族).
Making leaf-vein embroidery is not easy. It takes four steps, including choosing good leaves, drying them, drawing designs and embroidering. Yang Li, an inheritor (传承人) of this skill, brings the traditional embroidery of the Miao, Tujia and Dong ethnic groups in the leaves with modern skills together.
This old skill is in danger because of the long, hard work. Over the years, only about 20 people in Tongren have been able to finish all the steps by themselves. Yang tried to teach it in schools and villages, but few people kept learning. So it’s difficult to keep this traditional skill alive.
She said that it was important for her to improve and pass on this craft, so Yang opened the Guizhou Embroidery Industry Base (产业基地) in 2022. She has also shared leaf-vein embroidery through short videos.
“Leaf-vein embroidery is a treasure,” said her student, Yang Xinyu. “As a young person encouraged by my teacher Yang Li, I decide to pass on this craft and hope that more young people will return to their hometowns to continue it. We also hope more people will learn about and protect this wonderful traditional skill, so it won't disappear.”

When the sun was high, he was very hot and wished for a cool place to rest and have some food. As he walked along, he found some shade, and by it were some fine, wild strawberries.

【答案】40. D 41. B 42. C

根据短文内容,回答问题(每题答案不超过8个词)。
例文
Youth is a time for fighting
I believe teenagers need persistence and courage to face challenges. Last year, I took part in a school speech contest. The topic was difficult, and I felt nervous at first. Every evening after finishing homework, I practiced speaking in front of the mirror, adjusting my tone and gestures again and again. My deskmate also helped me correct my mistakes patiently. After two weeks of hard work, I won second prize.
This experience taught me that hard work brings growth. Now, I dare to take on new tasks without fear. Fighting in youth not only makes us better but also builds a stronger future.
