Want to stay away from colds? Put on a happy face.
Compared to unhappy people, those who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. It’s possible that being happy helps the body fight illnesses, say the researchers from New York University.
“It seems that positive feelings may reduce the danger of illness,” said the study’s leader researcher Sheldon Cohen.
In an earlier study, Cohen found that people who were cheerful and lively caught coughs and colds less often. People who showed feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill.
In this study, Cohen’s team interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks. During the interviews, the people told researchers about the happy or sad feelings they had that day.
After two weeks, the people were given colds by doctors and had to stay alone in a room for six days.
The result showed that everyone in the study was equally likely (同等可能) to get ill. But for people who said they felt happy during the research period, their illness was less serious and lasted for a shorter time.
Cohen believes that when people experience positive feelings, their body may produce a chemical that helps fight illness and disease. So if you are worried about your health, look on the bright side more often.
5. According to the study, who is less likely to suffer from colds?
A. People who take more medicine. B. People who are cheerful and relaxed.
C. People who stay alone. D. People who often try new things.
6. The underlined word “positive” probably means ________.
A. negative and sad B. sure and certain C. happy and hopeful D. cool and quiet
7. How long did the researchers interview the 193 adults in this study?
A. For six days. B. For two weeks. C. For two months. D. Until they got ill.
8. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To encourage readers to do more researches.
B. To introduce a new kind of medicine that can treat colds.
C. To show that cheerful feelings may help people stay healthier.
D. To advise doctors to pay more attention to people’s daily feelings.

Saving beached dolphins
Sitting in my car, I was watching dolphins swim in the ocean. It was such an enjoyment. Suddenly I saw more and more dolphins become beached (搁浅的) after the tide (潮水) went out. That was too dangerous. Those dolphins needed help — and fast.
Without thinking too much, I jumped off my car and ran toward them. I first called the police, but their hands were far and away. On the beach hardly a person could be seen. For those dolphins, it was a life-or-death moment. Not knowing what to do, I turned to the Internet for help, hoping people nearby could see my post and come to rescue those lovely animals.
Minutes later three teenage boys of a nearby school were the first to arrive. Then more and more people arrived after that. With direction from fishermen, about 40 volunteers were able to get to work on digging, pulling and bringing smaller dolphins to deeper waters.
However, to everyone’s surprise, no dolphin left by itself after it got free. When the tide began to rise, the dolphins chirped (唧唧叫) to encourage each other. The dolphins stayed where they were in the water until the rescue was complete. Once all 16 dolphins were set free, they soon returned to their ocean home together.
It warmed my heart that the dolphins showed a sense of belonging — helping each other in face of difficulty. Looking around, I understood that our volunteer group is very similar to the dolphins. On a cold November day, nobody was afraid to get wet or dirty. We tried our best to save the dolphins and communicated back and forth to keep the rescue in order and to ensure the safety of everybody. I will never forget this experience.
9. What did the writer do first after seeing the beached dolphins?
A. Called the police. B. Asked tourists for help.
C. Pulled the dolphins to water. D. Posted a message on the Internet.
10. Who were the first helpers to arrive at the beach?
A. Some local fishermen. B. About 40 volunteers.
C. Three teenage boys. D. The police.
11. After a dolphin got free, it didn’t leave by itself because ________.
A. it was afraid to swim alone
B. it didn’t know the way back home
C. the tide was not high enough for it to swim
D. it was waiting for the other dolphins to go back together
12. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The dolphins were in great danger and needed help.
B. The cold weather made the rescue very difficult.
C. The writer was deeply moved by the team spirit during the rescue.
D. The volunteers found it difficult to communicate with each other.
D
Winter is here, and as the weather gets colder, we spend more time indoors. It’s a great time to learn exciting science ideas through movies, TV shows and books. One big idea is quantum mechanics (量子力学). It may sound strange, but many popular science-fiction (科幻的) stories use it in fun and creative ways. Let’s explore a few of them.
▲ Copenhagen
Copenhagen tells the story of a 1941 meeting between three scientists, who discuss quantum mechanics. It is written according to a true event during World War II. The play also explores questions about doing the right thing.
▲ The Three-Body Problem
The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin is a famous Chinese science-fiction novel. It includes ideas from quantum mechanics and space travel. In the story, aliens (外星人) create a “sophon (智子)” that can communicate across four light-years—an idea likely inspired by quantum entanglement (量子纠缠). The book mixes fun storytelling with science, making readers curious about space.
▲ The Big Bang Theory
The Big Bang Theory began more than 10 years ago and quickly became a hit TV show. It takes place in California and follows the daily lives of funny scientists in their everyday lives. The show is famous for mixing humour with real science.
The characters, especially Sheldon Cooper, often talk about difficult ideas like quantum entanglement. These moments make the comedy (喜剧) unique (独特的) and give us a taste of real scientific ideas.
13. According to Copenhagen, three scientists were discussing ________ at a 1941 meeting.
A. World War II B. quantum mechanics
C. questions about doing the right thing D. science-fiction movies
14. In The Three-Body Problem, the “sophon” can ________.
A. travel faster than light B. talk across four light-years
C. stop a war on Earth D. turn people into aliens
15. Which is TRUE about The Big Bang Theory according to the passage?
A. It came out about 20 years ago.
B. Its characters make the comedy unique.
C It’s set in California and is about Sheldon Cooper’s life.
D. Humour and real-world science are mixed in this TV show.
16. Which can be the best title for the passage?
A. Big Ideas, Fun Stories B. Power of Physics
C. Make Science Fiction Come True D. Exploring the Space

Minutes later, three teenage boys of a nearby school were the first to arrive.
