But I found everyone so kind the'd invite me to drink coffee and really help me to get to know local traditions. I enjoyed things so much because of them. Chen Lei is a senior high school teacher who takes high-quality photos of old buildings in Wuhan to preserve the city’s cultural heritage.
Every day, Chen Lei takes his digital camera and walks patiently through the old city. Over the years he has taken thousands of professional pictures of old buildings. Another important part of his project is the interviews he conducts with elderly residents. He makes attempts to write stories about the old buildings and their inhabitants. He also visits schools to tell students about the conservation of cultural heritage and its significance.
Neither people nor buildings last forever, but Chen Lei’s photos can prevent us from forgetting them. Chen Lei’s great contributions are worth praising.
I thought about how I ought to use the money I had earned. The bus drove off without me. Across the street from the bus stop was a big grocery store. I went into the store and bought a turkey, ham, oranges and other goodies. I spent every dollar of my hard-earned money. The owner of the grocery store said, “Girl, the groceries have packed up like a mountain, and you can’t carry them home by yourself.” So I asked two boys with carriers on their bicycles to run them the half-mile down to my house.
Soon I got to my house with the groceries. With great excitement and tears in my eyes, I knocked on the door. When Mum opened the door, she surprisingly found that some of the groceries fell inside onto the floor. Holding back the tears, I whispered, “Happy New Year! A big surprise!” “Can you tell me what happened?” Mum was so excited that she cried out. I had a lot of explanation as we unpacked all the food and put it away. That day I got enough hugs and kisses from Mum. Even though I failed to get a new pair of shoes, the smile on Mum’s face made it all worthwhile. It was an unforgettable New Year for us after all!

(2024·广东广州高一检测)In January, 2017, we participated in an archaeological dig near the Okbo Elementary School in Kiyotake, Japan, along with housewives and elderly farmers. It was really cold, and a strong wind was blowing all the time.
The work we did was to dig down in the soil 5 cm at a time and look for something ancient such as earthen vessels, stone tools, and arrowheads. Sometimes we dug down 30 cm at once.
We dug down to some layers which could be seen on the soil wall. The different colours of these layers showed what had happened at different ages.
Also, in a few places where ancient people cooked, there were the remains of ashes and charcoal. The material that we longed to find was “Kokuyoseki”, or obsidian (黑曜石), a clear black stone for cutting meat and making arrowheads, because it is really hard to find and is beautiful.
From 8:30 to 5:00, we continued to dig in the soil. Then we had to get rid of the soil which we dug. The cold climate, the cold wind, and the dust made it hard for us. We couldn’t open our eyes.
Sometimes we measured the size of each stone and our boss drew the shape. It was really detailed work and made us exhausted, but we still carried out the excavation.
Now, however, we feel it was a really good opportunity because we were able to feel the ancient mystery and the reality of the work. Besides, we were able to become friends with the housewives and farmers who were also participating in the dig.
24. What does the author of the text mainly tell us?
A. His experience in joining in an archaeological dig.
B. How he found some ancient objects in the soil.
C. Where people can find earthen vessels and arrowheads.
D. The relationship between the author and some farmers.
25. What can be inferred from the text?
A. He had to dig as deep as possible.
B. Digging for ancient things is boring.
C. He seldom found anything ancient.
D. Excavation is really hard work.
26. What can people know from the colours of the layers of soil?
A. What the weather was like a long time ago.
B. What people lived on in ancient times.
C. The exact time obsidian formed.
D. The things that happened at different ages.
27. According to the text, what is the most exciting thing?
A. To find a place where people cooked.
B. To see the remains of charcoal and ashes.
C. To find a kind of stone used for cutting meat.
D. To dig out some arrowheads.

(2024·重庆南开中学高一检测)Before war and time destroy more of our important cultural sites, we need to save them in 3D digital libraries. Across 163 different countries, 1,000 natural and cultural historic places make up our most precious human heritage, which UNESCO calls World Heritage Sites.
We lose a little of that heritage every day. War, climate change and pollution have a bad effect, as do wind and rain. The $4 million a year that UNESCO spends on preservation is not nearly enough to take care of even the four dozen sites considered at approaching risk of being lost forever. Now there’s a better choice. New digital-conservation technologies let us hold on to them, at least virtually, through 3D scanning, modelling and digital storage. Such projects can be accomplished through cooperation between governments, universities, industry and non-profit organisations.
To make a 3D model, a laser scanner bounces light off an object and records the results. To reproduce every corner and opening, the scanner collects overlapping images from all possible angles. A computer then sews them together into one large surface image and draws lines from one point to another to create a wire-frame model. High-resolution digital cameras add colour and texture. When fully put together, the models can be viewed, printed or operated.
These scans do more than preserve a memory in a database. With highly accurate measurements, archaeologists can find hidden passages or reveal ancient engineering tricks. School kids can explore places they might otherwise never see. And when a site is destroyed, the scans can even be used to reconstruct what was there. That has already happened for one World Heritage Site, the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda. Built of wood in 1882, they were destroyed by fire in 2010 and rebuilt in 2014, based in large part on 3D models made in 2009. More than 100 World Heritage Sites have been already preserved as 3D models, and conservationists are racing to record as many more as possible.
28. How does the author show the necessity for 3D digital libraries in the first two paragraphs?
A. By listing the threats to our human heritage.
B. By introducing some damaged historical sites.
C. By quoting some experts’ views on heritage protection.
D. By explaining UNESCO’s research on World Heritage Sites.
29. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. The function of a laser scanner is to add colour and texture to the image.
B. The reflection of light off an object is recorded in a computer.
C. The process of making a 3D model is carried out with the help of a laser scanner.
D. High-resolution digital cameras make the models viewable, printable, and operable.
30. What do we know about the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda?
A. It is metal-framed.
B. It is still in its original condition.
C. It was once destroyed in an earthquake.
D. It was reconstructed thanks to 3D models.
31. What does the author intend to say through this text?
A. Never ignore the destructive power of war.
B. Take action to reduce pollution in historic places.
C. Take advantage of 3D technology to keep history.
D. Invest more money to preserve World Heritage Sites.

(2024·江西抚州临川一中高一检测)Over the past 5,000 years, China has given birth to a large number of cultural heritages. Among these are the beautiful porcelain wares produced in Jingdezhen in East China’s Jiangxi Province. Here we explore their development and importance in today’s society.
Jingdezhen is well-known around the world for its porcelain. It has produced porcelain since the Five Dynasties (907—960). Jingdezhen is known as the “porcelain capital” for its different kinds of porcelain wares with rich and cool styles. Of all the products, blue and white porcelain is the most famous. Such unique porcelains with the fine style have been praised as “the Treasure of China”.
Starting in the Song Dynasty (960—1279), kiln appeared in every household in every village in Jingdezhen, which was key to the establishment of its porcelain tradition.
During the Yuan Dynasty (1271—1368), a new technique for blue and white porcelain was invented. During the Ming (1368—1644) and Qing (1644—1912) dynasties, techniques for mining, painting, and firing were advanced, bringing Jingdezhen’s porcelain craftsmanship to a historic high. At that time, the establishment of the Zhushan Imperial Kiln and the growing porcelain market overseas accelerated the development of the industry, turning Jingdezhen into a major porcelain production centre.
The Republic of China (1912—1949) saw the growth of porcelain industry as well as a rise in shops and traders, which helped increase ties between Jingdezhen and other areas in China and other countries. After the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949, the porcelain industry saw its development at high speed.
However, with the economic growth and the use of new technology over the last decades, the traditional porcelain production worsens. Although some traditional techniques have been preserved, a large part of them were lost. In 2006, Jingdezhen porcelain craftsmanship was listed as a National Cultural Heritage.
32. Why is the blue and white porcelain regarded as “the Treasure of China”?
A. For its style.
B. For its timing.
C. For its weight.
D. For its producer.
33. When did Jingdezhen’s porcelain craftsmanship reach a record high?
A. In the Ming and Qing dynasties.
B. In the Song Dynasty.
C. In the Yuan Dynasty.
D. In the Five Dynasties.
34. What does the underlined word “accelerated” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Missed out. B. Sped up. C. Held back. D. Mixed with.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Importance of Porcelain
B. The Porcelain in Jingdezhen
C. The Rise of Porcelain Industry

(2024·浙江温州知临中学高一月考) When I was in Grade 11, my family had a tough time. My parents lost their jobs during the Depression. Dad was too ill to work outside, while Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community. We relied on our community assistance to keep us clothed, and although our clothes were second-hand, we thought they were beautiful.
Looking back, I realise what Mum went through for sending us kids to school. Every morning she would put a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because our shoes were worn out. Constant moving was typical for my family in these times. Rent was twenty-five dollars a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it. These were hard and sad years, but we never complained.
New Year was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five dollar fund for social services. Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the money to pay back rent, assuring us all had a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for the New Year.
Unknown to Mum, I had been shovelling snow and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of shoes. I knew exactly which shoes I wanted. They were made of genuine leather and they had a price of twenty-three dollars. Well, the big day came on the last day of that year. I was very excited, as I was hurrying up to catch the bus. It was only a half-a-mile walk, but on the way I noticed a house with lights and decorations. It was then that I realised in our house, we had no lights, no decorations, nor any money for goodies. I knew then that we would have no delicious food for the New Year, and I felt sad.
As I continued walking, I began to feel confused. I was sixteen years old, and I was feeling a strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of shoes while Mum was home in tears. She would be trying to explain to us why there were no presents.
