Hands up, who’s rubbish at drawing? Ha! Bet you’re not as bad as me.
Like most during lockdown, I missed being in familiar green city spaces. A quick snap (照片) on my phone never quite captured the moment. So I was excited to find “green sketching” sessions near my home. This seemed a perfect Covid-safe activity, even for the untalented.
Our group was all women with some having had previous artistic training. We were given art supplies and then set drawing exercises to help us get creative.
This type of art, “green sketching”, was inspired by environmental scientist Dr Ali Foxon. Ali thought that spreading the joy of sketching could be the key to making people care about nature instead of just wordy reports. She launched her movement, Boggy Doodles(沼泽涂鸦), in 2016.
The day we were there the forest was glorious—all gold, yellow and brown. We spent the last hour trying to capture a forest scene. Hoping not to embarrass myself too much, I made a real effort to catch the dark and brighter areas of the trunks, their textures (纹理). I used an eraser to create the white shape of a silver tree in the distance. Mine looked more like a winter scene—I hadn’t managed to capture the autumn leaves or the branches. But when the five of us brought our work together at the end, I wasn’t too ashamed: mine was only just the worst.
I had loved this chance for a real and physical creative experience—I can’t be the only one to feel sad at the prospect of a new lockdown. Sketching calms a busy, anxious mind and trains the brain to notice “little things” that spark joy and help strengthen us against life’s challenges. While engaging with nature may well make us keener on protecting it—in Robert Macfarlane’s words, “We will not save what we do not love and we rarely love what we cannot name or do not see” — the benefits of sketching work the other way round.
4. Why did the author take part in the “green sketching” activity?
A. Her friends advised her to do so.
B. She needed something to kill time.
C. She was eager to return to green spaces.
D. She wanted to improve her painting skills.
5. What can we learn about the “green sketching” activity?
A. It was launched by Dr Ali Foxon.
B. It was well-received after being held in 2016.
C. It required the participants to write a report afterwards.
D. It was aimed at raising public awareness of environmental protection.
6. How did the author feel about her “green sketching” experience?
A. She was ashamed that she didn’t take it seriously.
B. She felt embarrassed that her work was the worst.
C. She was fascinated by the winter scene in the forest.
D. She enjoyed herself even though she was poor at painting.
7. What does the author want to convey with Robert’s words?
A. Sketching can strengthen one’s creativity.
B. Doing things we love brings us happiness
C. The first step to protecting nature is to engage with it.
D. It often takes a calm mind to overcome challenges in life.
C
The global population growing, the climate is warming, and, no surprise, the demand for energy is steadily increasing. We need to use less energy in any way that we can.
German design student Tobias Tribenbacher, from the University of the Arts Berlin, has created a street light called Papilio in response to global sustainability initiatives, saying that he initially chose to create a city-facing streetlight due to such lights’ role in light pollution.
Papilio can be mounted to walls or set up as a freestanding lantern. The lamp should ideally be placed between three to six metres above ground, where ground-level winds are the strongest. The lamp is shaped like a pinwheel that acts as a wind turbine (涡轮), catching the wind to produce its own energy. It also has a rechargeable battery that stores electricity, so the lamp can operate even on less windy days.
Another key component of the lamp is the light itself. The warm-colored light doesn’t draw the attention of insects, and it uses an infrared (红外线的) sensor so that the light is only started by nearby motion, reducing its contribution to light pollution.
Aside from saving public space and beautifying streets, the streetlight’s design is also a visual signal of clean energy in action. “Design not only determines how street lights are working. It can also shape our attitude towards them and consequently affect how we use them,” Tobias Tribenbacher says. “Because energy creation is often an invisible process, projects such as these help the production of electricity become comprehensible.”
The lamp’s ability to change wind power into electricity can also be a huge benefit to naturally windy areas. And since it doesn’t require any electrical infrastructure (基础设施), there will be an opportunity to fix the street lights in remote settings or places where infrastructure innovations can be cost-prohibitive.
Just as lanterns create the character of streets and squares, Papilio is envisioned as a public sustainability statement that motivates residents to take part in transforming our cities into climate-friendly, future-proof environments.
8. Why did Tribenbacher choose to create the street light?
A. To tackle light pollution. B. To reduce biodiversity loss.
C. To beautify the city he lives in. D. To draw public attention to waste.
9. Which of the following is the feature of the street light?
A. It occupies a large space. B. It can be fixed anywhere.
C. It is switched off by hand. D. It is unattractive to insects.
10. What do Tribenbacher’s words in Paragraph 5 imply?
A. The climate crisis is tough to address.
B. Design can facilitate our comprehension of energy production.
C. We must take action to save clean energy.
D. We know little about electricity generation.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To stress the importance of innovation. B. To introduce a wind-powered street light.
C. To advocate environmental sustainability. D. To analyze the sustainability of the street light.
D
If you’ve ever felt a rush of intense emotion, then you’ve probably also experienced the crash that comes when those emotions gradually become less strong. Although we usually think of exhaustion (精疲力竭) in physical terms, it can also be mental. One of the contributors to mental exhaustion is high-intensity emotions. Too many of these high-intensity emotions, whether they are positive or negative, can lead to burnout.
Psychologists divide emotions into two dimensions, which includes high and low intensity, as well as positive and negative. High-intensity positive emotions include excitement or elation, while low-intensity positive emotions include calmness, or contentment. When it comes to negative emotions, high-intensity emotions include anger, anxiety, and fear, while low-intensity emotions include sadness, boredom, and tiredness.
It’s easy to see how high-intensity negative emotions like anger can be exhausting. What we don’t think about as much is the fact that high intensity positive emotions are also exhausting, although in a way that feels very different.
Excitement, even when it is fun, involves what psychologists call “physiological arousal”-- activation of our sympathetic system. High-intensity positive emotions involve the same physiological arousal as high-intensity negative emotions. Our heart rate increases, and our sweat glands (腺) activate. Because it activates the body’s stress response, excitement can deplete our system when sustained over longer periods. In other words, high intensity -- whether it’s from negative states or positive states- exhausts the body.
About 15-20% of people are thought to be highly sensitive. As they cycle through the highs and lows of life, the increased amount of intensity leaves them more exhausted than others.
This isn’t to say that we should never feel intense emotions. Emotional variety is an essential aspect of life, one that adds a depth and richness that we need. However, what we need to be mindful of is balance. There will be the exciting days, as well as the days when stress and anxiety are what push you through the tough times, but there are other, lower-intensity emotions that will serve us well in many other situations.
12. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. The functions of emotions.
B. The definition of emotions.
C. The categories of emotions.
D. The expression of emotions.
13. What does the underlined word “deplete” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Set off. B. Build up. C. Stand for. D. Burn out.
14. How can we manage the stress of high-intensity emotions?
A. Enrich our daily lives.
B. Avoid intense emotions.
C. Create emotional balance.
D. Detect the cause of anxiety.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Why psychologists are more exhausted
B. How high-intensity emotions wear us out
C. Why high-intensity negative emotions are tiring
D. How psychologists explain the effects of emotions

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项 为多余选项。
We automatically assume that as adults, we’re wiser than when we were children. However, actually we can learn a lot from our childhood self. For example, we can learn to develop optimism about the future. Do you remember how excited you used to be just before Christmas? ___16___ Reintroduce that childlike wonder into our daily experiences.
We can learn to dream big and imagine the impossible. How often have you heard a child say something like “One day, I’m going to be an astronaut”? Our adult minds immediately laugh at this idea and think about all the logical reasons as to why this might never happen. ___17___ We minimize our chances of attaining what we dream about. It is okay to dream big just as our childhood self did.
___18___ Our childhood self looked at possibilities and believed we could achieve them successfully. If we wanted to build a tree house, we’d go about thinking about how to make it happen instead of focusing on all the reasons it might not happen. In this way we can fill our life with possibilities rather than regrets.
We can learn to be playful and silly sometimes, ___19___ Children spend a large amount of time escaping from reality to mess about and have fun. Make time for your childhood self to come out and play. Run around the garden, wear a silly hat or spend time laughing. ___20___.
A. Don’t imagine things could go wrong.
B. We can learn to hold a “can do” attitude.
C. That feeling of great joy is hard to beat.
D. Most children tend to think in a positive way.
E. All of these activities can make us feel happy and alive.

52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had been swimming competitively for five years but after such a long time, I was ready to quit. I was often the only African American at the swimming competitions and our team couldn’t afford good uniforms. However, my number-one reason for wanting to quit was that I kept receiving “Honorable Mentions (荣誉奖)”. Any athlete knows that you don’t want to have a shelf full of “Honorable Mentions”, which you get just because you showed up.
One summer’s day, the day before a big swim meet, I decided to tell my grandma that I was quitting the swim team. After I told her, she looked me in the eye and said, “Baby, remember these words. ‘Quitters never win and winners never quit’. Your grandmother didn’t raise losers or quitters. You go to that meet tomorrow, and you swim like you are a grandchild of mine, you hear?” I was too afraid to say anything but “Yes, ma’am.”
The next day, we arrived at the swim meet late, which meant that I missed my group of swimmers in the 15/16 age group. My coach insisted I be allowed to swim with the older 17/18 age group. I knew she didn’t think I could win; she just didn’t want me to have taken such a long drive to get here for nothing.
As I mounted the board, all the other girls looked at me. I realized that these girls were here to do one thing — beat me! All of a sudden, my grandma’s words rang in my head. “Quitters never win and winners never quit. You swim like you are a grandchild of mine.” “Yes, grandma, I will swim like I am a grandchild of yours,” I said to myself.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Our group was all women, with some having had previous artistic training.
A Sketching can strengthen one’s creativity.
B. Doing things we love brings us happiness
C. The first step to protecting nature is to engage with it.
D. It often takes a calm mind to overcome challenges in life.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. D 7.

【解析】
【导语】本文是说明文。文章主要讲述高强度情绪,无论是积极的还是消极的,都会使人精疲力竭。
【12题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Psychologists divide emotions into two dimensions, which includes high and low intensity, as well as positive and negative.”(心理学家把情绪分为两个维度,包括高强度和低强度,以及积极和消极。)可知,这一段主要讲述情绪的分类。故选C。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“Because it activates the body’s stress response, excitement can deplete our system when sustained over longer periods.”(因为它激活了身体的应激反应,长时间持续的兴奋会deplete我们的系统。)可知,deplete是动词,它是长时间持续的兴奋给我们的系统导致的后果。根据下文“In other words, high intensity -- whether it’s from negative states or positive states- exhausts the body.”(换句话说,高强度的情绪,无论是来自消极还是积极的状态,都会让身体疲惫不堪。)可知,高强度的情绪导致的结果是会让身体疲惫不堪。所以deplete应该是“使疲惫不堪”的意思,和D选项意思一致。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“This isn’t to say that we should never feel intense emotions. Emotional variety is an essential aspect of life, one that adds a depth and richness that we need. However, what we need to be mindful of is balance.”(这并不是说我们不应该有强烈的情感。
根据第一段“Too many of these high-intensity emotions, whether they are positive or negative, can lead to burnout.”(过多的这种高强度情绪,无论是积极的还是消极的,都会导致精疲力竭。)可知,这篇文章主要讲述高强度情绪,无论是积极的还是消极的,都会导致人们精疲力竭。所以短文的最佳标题为“高度紧张的情绪会让我们疲惫不堪”故选B。

We can learn to be playful and silly sometimes ___19___ Children spend a large amount of time escaping from reality to mess about and have fun. Make time for your childhood self to come out and play. Run around the garden, wear a silly hat or spend time laughing. ___20___.
A. Don’t imagine things could go wrong.

第二节(满分25分)
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around me.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考答案:
SPLASH! I swam harder than I’d ever swum before. As I drew my right arm back, I noticed I was tied with one person. I assumed we were battling for eighth place and I refused to finish dead last, so I added more kick on the last 200 yards. I hit the wall and looked to the left and to the right for the swimmers who had beat me, but no one was there. They must have gotten out of the water already.
It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around me. I raised my head to see my coach screaming hysterically. My eyes followed her pointing finger and I couldn’t believe what I saw. The other swimmers had just reached the halfway point of the pool! That day, at age 15, I broke the national 17/18-year-old 400-freestyle record. I hung up my honorable mentions and replaced them with a huge trophy. “Yes, grandma, you’re right. Quitters never win and winners never quit.”
