They 48 officers of illegal fruits, vegetables, and other foods in luggage or in mail. The beagles do the job far better than any human could. Some of the dogs are donated by private owners; others were rescued from animal shelter.
The Household Pet
49 some dogs are working hard, others are free to spend their days resting and playing. Across the world, many pet dogs are treated like children. Many have their own rooms and all the things a dog called want. Some even have their own clothes. D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题):( 12分)
Hope Beyond the River
For most people, graduation is an exciting day, but my graduation day was not.
I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had flown in from across the country to watch the celebration. But just like everyone else in my class, I had watched the economy turn from bad to worse in my fourth year of university. Almost all of us graduates had degrees, but very uncertain future.
The weeks ahead weren’t easy. I knew my small university town couldn’t offer me any opportunities, so I packed up my things and drove to Southern California to find work. But what I thought would take a week lasted for two weeks, and then four, and 100 job applications later, I found myself in the exact same situation as I was in before.
You know that feeling when you wake up in fear? That feeling became constant (持续不断的) in my life. Days felt like weeks, weeks like months, and those many months felt like everlasting pain. And the most annoying part was no matter how much I tried, I just couldn’t seem to make any progress. So what did I do to keep my good sense? I decided to write. Something about putting words on a page made everything seem a little clearer-a little brighter. Something about writing gave me hope. And if you want something badly enough, sometimes a little hope is all you need!
I put my dissatisfaction into a children’s book. Beyond the River is the story of an unlikely hero, a little fish, who refused to give up his dream.
And then one day, without any sort of writing degree or contacts in the writing world - just a lot of hard work and determination - I was offered a publishing contract for my first book! After that, things slowly began to fall into place. I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I got an interview with the Walt Disney Company and was hired shortly after.
Don’t give up. Even if things look tough now, don’t give up. If you work hard, things will always get better. Often times our dreams lie in wait just a little further upstream. All we need is the courage to push beyond the river.Q&A

【答案】例文
Dear teammates.
I understand that we have different opinions on choosing the theme between The Bund, Yu Garden and People’s Square for the “Telling Shanghai Stories in English” activity. Everyone has their own reasons for preferring a certain place, and that’s great because it shows our enthusiasm for this project.
However, the continuous argument won’t lead us to a conclusion. I think we can do this: First, we each write down the unique features and stories we can tell about our preferred place. Then, we share these with each other. After that, we can vote on which place has the most interesting and representative stories to tell. In this way, we cannot only make a fair decision but also learn more about these wonderful places in Shanghai.
Let’s work together to make our presentation a great success!
Best regards.
Li Hua

Dogs and Humans
About 14,000 years ago, human beings and dogs began a partnership that has lasted through the years. Our interactions (互动) may have begun when wolves came 45 to our homes, attracted by the smell of human garbage, or when humans found wolf puppies and trained them to be loving pets.
Today, through the careful selection of dog parents, humans have created many different types of dogs. Each type has its own look and talents, and its own 46 within human society. Here are three examples of “a dog’s life” in the human world.
The Animal Carer
Today, many hospitals let specially trained dogs in to bring love and cheer to patients. Shaynee the wheaten terrier (小猎犬) is a therapy (治疗) dog. She visits children who are fighting deadly diseases. Dogs like Shaynee help patients feel calm and at peace, which can be 47 in a busy hospital. They help both children and adults stay strong during long hospital stays, and, some suggest, even help them get better.
The Working Dog
Today, some beagles (小猎犬) work in airports for the government. They are part of a program called the Beagle Brigade. A beagle is good for this type of work because of its powerful nose, and ability to track smells. The Beagle Brigade’s job is to smell everything that comes into the country.
Many of these pets spend their days playing, learning to be obedient (顺从的), or even going to yoga classed. Their owners give them the best, and 50 doing so.

Artificial Intelligence (Al) is all around us. Smart machines and computers are changing almost all parts of our lives in various ways. AI is like a magic a 51 in our daily lives. We now have robots to clean swimming pools and help us drive if we wish. We can talk to our phones now and use Al for all kinds of things. They answer our questions, help us write e-mails, and even make us look better in photos!
When Al is used by the wrong people, however, it could also lead to s 52 problems. A good example of this is when people use Al to make fake (虚假的) videos or photos. The problem is that the smarter Al gets, the harder it is for the human eye to tell what is real and what is not. These “deepfakes” might be fun to watch if they are about s 53 and famous people. But if there is a fake video of you on the Internet doing something really stupid, it might not be so “funny” anymore. What’s worse is that AI which can c 54 a person’s appearance or voice can be used to cheat others, and this could be dangerous.
Will Al make big changes to the way we live, work, and have fun? Yes, it will, but there are still w 55 . On the other hand, if the young and old can learn to work with Al and to use it for the good of the whole planet, hopefully we will enjoy the a 56 it brings. The most important thing is not to be afraid of all these big changes, but to try our best to make the most of them.
Al is really fantastic, but we need to be careful with it. We should learn how to use it safely and w 57 . Let’s all work together to make sure Al helps us live better and happier lives. Remember, the future is in our hands, and we can make it great if we use Al the right way.
