In Xiaoguo Village, Lanling, Linyi , there is a wonderful folk craft (手工) with a history of nearly 200 years—Xiaoguo Clay Sculpture(小郭泥塑).
This traditional craft first came into being in the Xianfeng Period of the Qing Dynasty(1851-1861). A skilled local craftsman (工匠) named Li Zongbiao created it. He learned useful skills from Tianjin’s “Clay Figure Zhang” and Wuxi’s Huishan clay sculpture. Then he used the special yellow clay in his hometown—which is dug 1-2 meters underground clay has no impurities (杂质) and doesn’t break easily when dry.
Making it needs over six steps: mixing clay, kneading (揉捏) the clay until it is smooth, shaping it into basic blanks (坯体), putting small reed whistles (芦苇哨) inside (when you shake the finished sculpture, the whistles make “woo-woo”sounds, and that’s why children love it so much), letting the blanks air-dry slowly, and finally painting them carefully. When painting, craftsmen first use white paint as the base coat, then add bright colors like red, green and blue, and finally draw thin black lines to make the figures look lively and real. The natural color of the clay also shows through a little, adding a simple and nice feel to the works.
Traditional works of Xiaoguo Clay Sculpture usually include famous characters from “The Oath of the Peach Garden” 《桃园三结义》 and cute animals of the Twelve Chinese Zodiacs (十二生肖). In 2006, Xiaoguo Clay Sculpture was officially added to Shandong’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List, so it can get better protection and be passed down to more people.
