17.What is the speaker doing?

A.They were easy to understand.

A.Artists. B.Historians. C.Modern house builders.
20.What is the speaker going to do next?
A.Print a book. B.Show a book. C.Take photos of a book.
【答案】17.A 18.C 19.B 20.B
In today’s class, we’ll be examining some 19th-century pattern books that were used for building houses. I think it’s fair to say that these pattern books were the most important influence on the design of North American houses during the 19th century. This was because most people who wanted to build a house couldn’t afford to hire architects. Instead, they bought a pattern book, picked out a plan, and took it to the builder. The difference in cost was substantial. In 1870, for example, hiring an architect would cost about 100 dollars. At the same time, a pattern book written by an architect cost only 5 dollars. At that price, it’s easy to see why pattern books were so popular. Some are back in print again today, and of course they cost a lot more than they did at that time. But they’re invaluable resources for historians, and also for people who restore old houses. I have a modern reprint here that I’ll pass around now so that everyone can have a look.

This summer, Fang Zhuren, a 50-year-old woman from a rural village in Shandong Province with only a middle school education, burst onto the country’s stand-up (单口的) comedy scene as the dark horse of the hit online competition, The King of Stand-Up Comedy Season Two.
Two years ago, she felt trapped by endless housework and an unhappy marriage. She was desperate for an escape. The turning point came in March 2023 at a live show of a female comedian where, during audience interaction, Fang humorously introduced herself as “the director of the information center” in her village. Fang’s quick-witted, humorous answer stole the show, and the clip later went viral online.
Impressed, the comedian invited Fang to join a comedy training session, and even got Fang’s travel, accommodation, and training expenses covered. That marked the beginning of Fang’s journey into becoming a stand-up comedian. Stand-up became her-emotional release, giving her the courage to leave her 30-year marriage. In her debut-on the comedy competition, Fang delivered a hilarious yet touching set about how the stand-up comedy empowered her to divorce her husband and build a new life with her two daughters.
Yang Tianzhen, a judge on the show, remarks that Fang embodies the, resilient spirit of Chinese women with strength created from misfortune. Tan Xiaobong, producer of the show, admits she initially had doubts when first encountering Fang’s audition tape. When they met in person, all her doubts vanished. Her raw authenticity and strong ability to consistently transform life experiences into comedy made casting her an undeniable choice.
Raised in poverty, Fang left school early for factory work. After marriage, she carried heavy domestic duties. Discovering comedy through podcasts opened a new world. After initial struggles at open mics, she found her voice. “Stand-up soon became my release. Comedy helped me make peace with life,” Fang says. Comedy became both emotional relief and a path to independence. She concluded powerfully by marking her milestones: signing as a comedian on April 8, 2023. Moreover, her daughter praised her natural talent and perseverance, seeing her as an inspiring example.
24.What initially made Fang Zhuren famous online?
A.Winning a comedy competition. B.Leaving her long-term marriage.
C.Responding humorously at a show. D.Training with a famous comedian.
25.What can be inferred about Fang’s comedy training?
A.It was funded by her family. B.It required years to complete.
C.It came after her viral moment. D.It focused on basic writing skills.
26.Which two words best describe Fang Zhuren?
A.Resilient and persistent. B.Ambitious and arrogant.
C.Cautious and conservative. D.Humorous and considerate.
27.Which is the best title for the text?
A.Rescued from Misery B.Freed through Comedy
C.Cured by a Comedian D.Transformed by a Show
【答案】24.C 25.C 26.A 27.B
根据第二段中的“The turning point came in March 2023 at a live show of a female comedian where, during audience interaction, Fang humorously introduced herself as “the director of the information center” in her village. Fang’s quick-witted, humorous answer stole the show, and the clip later went viral online.(转折点发生在2023年3月的一场女喜剧演员现场表演中,在观众互动环节,房主任幽默地介绍自己是村里的“信息中心主任”。她机智又风趣的回答惊艳全场,相关片段随后在网上走红)”可知,房主任最初是因为在脱口秀现场互动时的幽默回应而走红网络。故选C项。
25.推理判断题。根据第二段尾句“Fang’s quick-witted, humorous answer stole the show, and the clip later went viral online.(她机智又风趣的回答惊艳全场,相关片段随后在网上走红)”以及第三段首句“Impressed, the comedian invited Fang to join a comedy training session, and even got Fang’s travel, accommodation, and training expenses covered.(这位喜剧演员深受触动,邀请房主任参加喜剧训练营,甚至包揽了她的交通、住宿和培训费用)”可知,房主任是在视频走红之后,才获得了参加喜剧培训的机会。
根据第四段第一句评委的评价“Fang embodies the resilient spirit of Chinese women with strength created from misfortune.(房主任身上体现了中国女性在困境中淬炼出力量的坚韧精神)”,以及第五段“After initial struggles at open mics, she found her voice.(在经历了开放麦初期的挣扎后,她找到了自己的表演风格)”和以及“Moreover, her daughter praised her natural talent and perseverance, seeing her as an inspiring example.(此外,她的女儿称赞她天赋过人且坚韧不拔,将她视为催人奋进的榜样)”可知,Resilient(坚韧的)和persistent(执着的)最能精准描述房主任的性格特质。故选A项。
C
We often imagine conservation unfolding in wild, remote landscapes, not in the middle of bustling cities. But look a little closer and a different story emerges. On rooftops, in alleyways and through the tiniest cracks in the pavement, biodiversity is finding its way back in the heart of metropolis.
Nathalie Pettorelli of the Zoological Society of London argues that cities are ecosystems in their own right. “If you accept the city is an ecosystem,” she says, “the question then becomes: How do you make this ecosystem more biodiverse?”
Obviously, connectivity is one answer. In the UK, initiatives such as Hedgehog (刺猬) Street encourage neighbours to link their gardens through small fence holes to allow free movement. Utrecht in the Netherlands has sewn together more than 120km of wildflower strips, providing continuous habitat for bees and butterflies. A bee highway in Oslo, Norway, weaves through rooftops, parks and balconies to offer pollinators safe passage around the urban maze.
Wildlife bridges are another powerful tool for connecting habitats. The Netherlands is well known for pioneering “ecoducts” — green overpasses that allow animals such as deer, boar and badgers to safely cross busy highways. California is currently completing the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, which will span an expansive 10 lanes of traffic and reconnect a fragmented mountain lion population that was cut off by the freeway.
Even the most ordinary city surfaces can be recruited. Nature-positive architecture is the growing trend: rooftops that store rainwater and shelter swifts, walls covered with plants that cool streets and feed insects, etc. By turning hard surface into micro-habitats, it not only minimises impact on the environment but actively restore and enhances biodiversity, providing shelter, food and connectivity for wildlife.
Emma Marris, author of Rambunctious Garden: Saving Nature in a Post-Wild World, is delighted to see that some of the best urban nature is accidental and wildlife is making a comeback where it has the space to do so. “Such as spontaneous plants colonising flood zones, birds nesting in signboards...” she says.
Whether you’re planting native plants on a shed roof or simply leaving a patch of garden untidy, there’s space for everyone in the future wild city. Nature doesn’t need perfection — it just needs opportunity.
28.What’s the main purpose of Paragraph 1?
A.To point out a problem. B.To introduce the topic.
C.To present a phenomenon. D.To question the previous view.
29.Which initiative serves as a way to create connectivity for insects in urban areas?
A.Wildflower strips in Utrecht.
B.Hedgehog Street in the UK.
C.Ecoducts in the Netherlands.
D.The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing.
30.What does the underlined word “spontaneous” mean in paragraph 6?
A.Deliberately planted.
B.Carefully protected by law.
C.Imported from other countries.
D.Growing naturally without planning.
31.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Every city garden must be kept tidy to attract diverse wildlife.
B.Nature-positive architecture is a promising but impractical approach.
C.Urban biodiversity can be boosted through creative human intervention.
D.Conservation efforts should focus on remote wilderness rather than cities.
【答案】28.B 29.A 30.D 31.C
根据第一段“We often imagine conservation unfolding in wild, remote landscapes, not in the middle of bustling cities. But look a little closer and a different story emerges. On rooftops, in alleyways and through the tiniest cracks in the pavement, biodiversity is finding its way back in the heart of metropolis. (我们常以为生态保护只发生在人迹罕至的荒野,而非繁华的都市中心。然而,细看之下,我们会发现另一番景象:屋顶、巷弄、乃至人行道最微小的缝隙中,生物多样性正悄然回归大都市的怀抱)”可推知,第一段先打破人们对“生态保护仅发生在偏远地区”的固有认知,引出“城市中也存在生物多样性”这一话题。故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段“Utrecht in the Netherlands has sewn together more than 120km of wildflower strips, providing continuous habitat for bees and butterflies. (荷兰乌得勒支市已铺设了超过120公里的野花带,为蜜蜂和蝴蝶构建了连续的栖息廊道)”可知,乌得勒支的野花带是为城市昆虫创造连通栖息地的举措。故选A项。
根据第六段“some of the best urban nature is accidental and wildlife is making a comeback where it has the space to do so. “Such as spontaneous plants colonising flood zones, birds nesting in signboards...” she says. (城市中一些最棒的自然景观其实是无心插柳的结果,野生动物正在向那些留有空间的地带回归。“比如在洪水区生长的spontaneous植物,在广告牌上筑巢的鸟……”她说)”可知,spontaneous对应前句的“accidental(偶然的)”,即植物是自然生长而非刻意规划的。故选D项。
31.推理判断题。根据第五段“By turning hard surface into micro-habitats, it not only minimises impact on the environment but actively restore and enhances biodiversity, providing shelter, food and connectivity for wildlife. (通过将硬质铺装转化为微型生境,这一举措不仅最大限度地降低了对环境的影响,还能积极恢复并提升生物多样性,为野生动物提供庇护所、食物和生态连接)”及文中提到的刺猬街、野花带、生态桥等举措可知,通过创意性的人类干预可以提升城市生物多样性。故选C项。
D
Bytedance uses its SSP platform differently from most companies. The company’s product teams or units don’t control their own operating resources. Instead, many common business, technology, and operating functions (among them HR and legal) are centralized and organized into corresponding teams.
The teams are highly specialized, so that the right people can be found and flexibly deployed as needed to each new venture. Cloud and shared operational tools, some of which have been developed in house, allow ByteDance to maintain this seemingly complex organizational setup.
Product and related teams still focus on serving customer needs, but they rely on different SSP teams to accelerate development and growth. For example, when ByteDance tasks a new venture team with investigating user needs and market opportunities, the team can go to the user-research specialists at the SSP for data support, saving time on market analysis. In other companies, these tasks are undertaken by the product team, which is rarely best equipped for such information gathering.
Subsequently, when a use case has been identified that justifies developing a new app or product feature, the product team is paired with engineers at the SSP level to develop the new product or feature. In some cases, product teams customize existing technologies that have already been developed by the SSP. Algorithms are a case in point. Product teams at ByteDance work with SSP algorithm engineers to fine-tune their enormously powerful recommendation engines.
The SSP has also brought together other important teams: user-growth teams, which help identify and acquire desired users; content teams, which establish partnerships to acquire new content; analytics teams, which help to develop deeper user insights; and sales teams, which drive monetization. As expected, because so many capabilities have been centralized into this large SSP, the actual product teams tend to be small and focused, especially in the exploration stage. Douyin, for example, began with just a handful of employees, and the education team began with just two.
Importantly, the relationship between the SSP and market-facing teams is symbiotic and mutually beneficial. It’s this virtuous loop of continued discovery and improvement that has enabled ByteDance’s success.
32.What is the main function of ByteDance’s SSP platform according to the passage?
A.To replace product teams in developing new features.
B.To centralize specialized resources for flexible support of product teams.
C.To compete directly with other companies’ operational models.
D.To primarily focus on the sales and monetization of final products.
33.What does the example of Douyin and the education team (Paragraph 5) illustrate?
A.The SSP model leads to inefficient use of human resources.
B.Product teams under the SSP structure can be small and agile.
C.ByteDance prefers to start projects with minimal investment.
D.Successful products are often developed by very few people.
34.What is the key to the success of the relationship between the SSP and product teams?
A.The complete independence of product teams in decision-making.
B.The strict control the SSP has over all product development stages.
C.The symbiotic and mutually beneficial interaction between them.
D.The fact that product teams have more expertise than SSP teams.
35.Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude towards ByteDance’s SSP model?
A.Critically analytical of its potential risks.
B.Objectively explanatory with an implied appreciation.
C.Skeptical about its long-term sustainability.
D.Enthusiastically promotional for all companies to adopt.
根据第一段“Instead, many common business, technology, and operating functions (among them HR and legal) are centralized and organized into corresponding teams.(相反,许多常见的业务、技术及运营职能(包括人力资源与法务职能在内)都被集中整合,组建为相应的专门团队)”;根据第二段“The teams are highly specialized, so that the right people can be found and flexibly deployed as needed to each new venture. Cloud and shared operational tools, some of which have been developed in house, allow ByteDance to maintain this seemingly complex organizational setup.(这些团队高度专业化,因此可以根据需要找到合适的人员并灵活部署到每个新项目中。云和共享运营工具(其中一些是内部开发的)使字节跳动能够维持这种看似复杂的组织设置)”以及第三段“Product and related teams still focus on serving customer needs, but they rely on different SSP teams to accelerate development and growth.(产品和相关团队仍然专注于满足客户需求,但他们依赖不同的SSP团队来加速发展和增长)”可知,字节跳动的SSP平台的主要功能是集中专业资源,以便灵活支持产品团队。故选B。
根据第五段“As expected, because so many capabilities have been centralized into this large SSP, the actual product teams tend to be small and focused, especially in the exploration stage. Douyin, for example, began with just a handful of employees, and the education team began with just two.(不出所料,由于如此多的能力都集中在这个大型SSP中,实际的产品团队往往规模较小且专注,尤其是在探索阶段。例如,抖音一开始只有少数员工,教育团队一开始只有两个人)”可知,抖音和教育团队的例子说明了在SSP结构下的产品团队可以规模小且灵活。故选B。
34.细节理解题。 根据最后一段“Importantly, the relationship between the SSP and market-facing teams is symbiotic and mutually beneficial. It’s this virtuous loop of continued discovery and improvement that has enabled ByteDance’s success.(重要的是,SSP与面向市场的团队之间的关系是共生互利的。
A piercing (刺耳的) alarm wakes you up from your sweet dream. But it’s not your alarm clock — your building is on fire. 36 . Here are some suggestions to improve your chances.
37 .
If you’re in the market for a new home, or if you simply like playing with buttons, a high-rise (高层的) apartment sounds like the right fit for you. Still, it’s essential to get prepared. Make sure you choose a building with an up-to-date fire safety system. Familiarize yourself with the building’s emergency procedures and locate all emergency exits.
Don’t panic
An unexpected fire alarm will be scary, but try to stay calm. Keep a clear head and try to figure out whether the fire is above you, below you, or on your floor. Then feel the door to your unit. If it is cool, you should be able to leave your apartment and head for the nearest exit. If you do leave, be sure to close all the doors behind you. 38 .
Get down to the floor
The primary killer in a fire is smoke, not the heat or flames. If you have to pass through smoke, make sure you do so by crawling on all fours. Crawl your way through the smoke, as breathable air is often closest to the floor. 39 . This helps filter out the smoke as you breathe.
Never attempt to jump
Do not jump from any floor above the second. You’ll likely have better chances of survival waiting inside for help to arrive. Although it feels unreasonable to wait during a fire, panicked decisions can lead to costly mistakes. 40 . They use fire-resistant materials and are equipped with sprinklers, alarms, and emergency voice systems to guide you.
A.Do your research
B.Update emergency procedures
C.It picks up first responders at ground level
D.Meanwhile, use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth
E.The good news is that today’s high-rises are built for fire safety
F.By doing so, you don’t give the fire more oxygen to keep burning
G.If you’re in a burning high-rise apartment, your choices determine whether you survive
【答案】36.G 37.A 38.F 39.D 40.E
36.由上文“A piercing alarm wakes you up from your sweet dream. But it’s not your alarm clock — your building is on fire. (一阵刺耳的警报声将你从甜美的睡梦中惊醒。但发出警报的不是你的闹钟——而是你所住的大楼着火了。)”及下文“Here are some suggestions to improve your chances. (以下是一些能提高你生存几率的建议。)”可知,上句描述高层着火的危机场景,下句引出逃生建议,选项G“If you’re in a burning high-rise apartment, your choices determine whether you survive (如果你正身处一栋着火的高层公寓,你的抉择将决定自己能否幸存)”起到承上启下的作用,点明“高层着火时,选择决定生死”的核心,自然衔接下文的建议,该选项中的“a burning high-rise apartment”与上文的“building is on fire”相呼应。故选G。
37.由下文“If you’re in the market for a new home, or if you simply like playing with buttons, a high-rise apartment sounds like the right fit for you. Still, it’s essential to get prepared. Make sure you choose a building with an up-to-date fire safety system. Familiarize yourself with the building’s emergency procedures and locate all emergency exits. 故选A。
38.由上文“If you do leave, be sure to close all the doors behind you. (离开时,切记关上身后所有的门。)”可知,上文提到“关门”的动作,空处需解释关门的原因,选项F“By doing so, you don’t give the fire more oxygen to keep burning (这样做可以避免为火势提供更多氧气,防止火势进一步蔓延)”解释了关门可以避免给火势提供更多氧气助燃,逻辑连贯。该选项中的“By doing so”指代前文的“be sure to close all the doors behind you”。故选F。
39.由上文“Crawl your way through the smoke, as breathable air is often closest to the floor. (贴着地面爬行,因为可供呼吸的空气往往集中在靠近地面的位置。)”及下文“This helps filter out the smoke as you breathe. (这能帮助你在呼吸时过滤掉烟雾中的有害物质。)”可知,上文讲“匍匐避烟”的方法,下文讲“这有助于在呼吸时过滤烟雾”,选项D“Meanwhile, use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth (与此同时,用湿布捂住口鼻)”补充了另一个防烟措施,下文的“This”指代该选项的“use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth”,语义衔接紧密。故选D。
40.由上文“Do not jump from any floor above the second. You’ll likely have better chances of survival waiting inside for help to arrive. Although it feels unreasonable to wait during a fire, panicked decisions can lead to costly mistakes. (切勿从二楼以上的任何楼层跳楼逃生。待在室内等待救援人员到来,你的生存几率会更高。尽管在火灾发生时,待在原地等待看似很不合理,但慌乱之下做出的决定往往会导致无法挽回的后果。)”及下文“They use fire-resistant materials and are equipped with sprinklers, alarms, and emergency voice systems to guide you. (这些大楼采用了防火材料,还配备了自动喷水灭火装置、警报器和应急语音广播系统,为你指引逃生方向。)”可知,上文建议“待在室内”,下文说明高楼的防火设计,选项E“The good news is that today’s high-rises are built for fire safety (好消息是,如今的高层建筑都是按照消防安全标准建造的)”起到过渡作用,点明“如今的高楼是为消防安全而建”,解释了“等待救援更安全”的原因。故选E。

Since eSIMs are rewritten, travelers abroad no longer need a new SIM card 60 (use) the local network, 61 saves money. Plus, in the eSIM — only models of smartphones, such as the iPhone 17 Pro Max 62 (introduce) in September, the space previously occupied by SIMs has been used for a bigger battery that provides up to 39 hours of video playback.

故填a。

Justin and his friend David had known each other before they became classmates. David didn’t seem to mind that Justin was small for his age. But on the first day of school, when David and Justin had lunch with the rest of the fifth-grade boys, Steven asked when David had started playing with babies, which made Justin uneasy.
Several weeks later, David called to invite Justin to his birthday party at his grandfather’s farm. Justin didn’t want to go initially because he had wanted to spend the day running. When he ran, the problems at school didn’t matter, and being the smallest kid in his class didn’t matter, either.
This Saturday, however, he reached the farm with Steven. David’s mother suggested that David show the boys around, so David asked his grandfather, Mr. Hamilton, to drive them to the foot of a hill. Mr. Hamilton left to prepare for the party. The boys decided to enter a cave, go out from a hole at its top, climb the hill and then hike back.
The entrance to the cave was a big stone room with huge wooden pillars (柱子) supporting the doorway. About thirty feet in was a wall of rocks blocking further entrance. From the hole in the ceiling, light shone on the back wall. David started to show the boys how to climb up the back wall. “Let me go first,” Steven demanded. He grabbed David’s belt and pulled him off the rock, throwing him onto the ground.
“Watch out!” shouted Justin. But it was too late. David fell hard against a pillar and the wood started to crack. A second later the pillar fell. Then part of the ceiling collapsed. Dust filled the air. When the dust finally settled, the boys found themselves trapped in the cave and the only exit was the hole in the ceiling, which became smaller — too small for anyone to go out. Worse still, a stream of water was flowing into the cave.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Justin looked up at the hole and said, “I might be small enough to get out.”
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Out of breath, Justin finally saw the farmhouse.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Justin looked up at the hole and said,“ I might be small enough to get out.” Volunteering to have a try, he climbed slowly up the back wall. He curled his body to such an extreme extent that he ultimately managed to come out of the hole. No sooner had Justin reached the top than he headed off to the farmhouse without hesitation. With those panicked faces and flowing water in mind, he couldn’t help quickening his pace. It was his regular running that enabled him to make a mad dash to the farmhouse despite fatigue and concern.
Out of breath, Justin finally saw the farmhouse. “Mr. Hamilton! Hurry! David and Steven are trapped in the cave.” On hearing that, Mr. Hamilton left for the cave immediately with David’s mom. The moment they reached the spot, they set out to clear the small opening and eventually pulled the boys out. Luckily, no one was hurt. Steven approached Justin and said “I sincerely apologize for making fun of you. It’s amazing how quickly you managed to get help.” “Apology accepted,” A sense of pride in his small body washed over Justin for the first time.

China’s three major telecom operators — China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom — have 56 (official) launched eSIM phone services nationwide, reported Xinhua.
According to Forbes, eSIM is short 57 embedded subscriber identity module. A traditional SIM — a small plastic card that fits into your phone — holds information, such as your mobile number, and enables calls, texts and data usage. By contrast, eSIMs 58 (build) right into the phone and can’t be taken out, making 59 harder for thieves to hide a stolen phone’s location.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Justin looked up at the hole and said, “I might be small enough to get out.”

Listen to the next question. In today's class will be examining some sixth century pattern books that were used for building houses. I think it's fair to say that these pattern books were the most important influence on the design of north american houses during the sixth century. This was because most people who wanted to build a house couldn't afford to hire architects. Instead, they bought a pattern book, picked out a plan and took IT to the builder. The difference in cost was substantial. In eighteen seventy, for example, hiring an architect would cost about one hundred dollars. At the same time, a pattern book written by an architect cost only five dollars at that Price. It's easy to see why pattern books were so popular. Some are back in print again today. And of course, they cost a lot more than they did at that time, but they're in valuable resource for historians and also for people who restore old houses. I have a modern reprint here that i'll pass around now so that everyone can have a look in. Today's class will be examining some sixth century pattern books that were used for building houses.
