There is a saying about the south-western Chinese province of Guizhou: “Not three feet of flat land, not three days without rain, not a family with three silver coins.” But,with the help of a spicy sauce, Tao Huabi, also known as “China’s hottest woman”, has well and truly opposed this rule.
Born in 1947, the eighth daughter of a poor family in a village of mountainous Guizhou, Tao did not go to school and did not learn to read or write. She spent her childhood hungry, and survived the Great Chinese Famine by eating plant roots, according to a biography on Weibo. When her husband died, she moved to the city of Guiyang and started selling noodles with a sauce that she made herself, She eventually opened the charmingly named Economical Restaurant in the 1990s. When a new highway brought truck drivers to Guiyang, she gave them free jars of the sauce and they spread the word.In 1996, she set a factory up in a house in Guiyang, and a year later Lao Gan Ma Special Flavour Foodstuffs Company was born.
Miranda Brown, professor of Chinese studies at the University of Michigan, who is writing a book on the history of Chinese food, says that in China, Lao Gan Ma’s popularity is mainly because her products are natural. Chinese consumers tend to want foods that perfectly mix regional flavors and use ingredients grown from the soil of those regions. And today Lao Gan Ma is also increasingly popular overseas, especially in the US.
According to its website, the company produces 1.3 million bottles daily, helping the historically poor Guizhou achieve 10. 5% growth—the second fastest of every Chinese province that year, and ahead of the national rate of 6.7%.
As for the godmother herself, an article in Yicai Global describes her as the Queen of a “red kingdom” of chili fields.

C. The hardships faced by Tao. D. The development of the company.
6. According to Miranda Brown, what is the reason for Lao Gan Ma’s popularity?
A. Low price. B. Spicy taste.
C. Local ingredients. D. Positive comments.
7. What can we learn from Tao’s story?
A. God helps those who help themselves.
B. Failure is the mother of success.
C. Well begun, half done.
D. Many hands make light work.

Scientists believed that if they could hit an asteroid(小行星)with an object travelling very fast, they could push the asteroid off the path it was on. So NASA came up with an experiment called the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART.
Engineers built a box-shaped spacecraft that was about the size of a small car and weighed 570 kilograms and equipped it with a special camera and computers that would allow it to find and follow the asteroid they had chosen for the experiment.
Asteroids are rocky objects that move around the Sun. The smallest are the size of a large stone while some are up to 1, 000 kilometers in diameter (直径). The asteroid that was the target for this test is called Dimorphos, about 160 meters in diameter, or the size of a football stadium. It orbits (环绕) another larger asteroid, called Didymos. They are more than 7 million kilometers away from Earth and go around the Sun together, once every two years.
The DART spacecraft was sent up in November 2021 and then orbited the Sun for 10 months, following the path of Didymos and Dimorphos. Most of that time, Dimorphos was hidden by the sunlight reflecting off of the larger asteroid. On September 26, 2022, the spacecraft’s camera noticed Dimorphos for the first time and its navigation(导航)system began to guide it through space towards its target. About an hour later, it crashed into Dimorphos at more than 22, 500kilometers per hour.
Scientists studied the data and images of the asteroids for the next two weeks and found that the orbit of Dimorphos has shortened from 11 hours and 55 minutes to 11 hours and 23 minutes:a 32-minute change. While this may seem like a very small change, it shows that—if a dangerous asteroid was heading toward us—it would be possible to knock it off its course, keeping Earth safe. The chances of Earth actually being hit by an asteroid large enough to cause damage are very small.
8. What is the purpose of the DART?
A. To test whether scientists’ idea is true or not.
B. To know the weight of the asteroids going around the Sun.
C. To learn about the number of asteroids getting close to Earth.
D. To understand how asteroids move through space.
9. What can we learn about the target for the DART?
A. It is as large as a stadium. B. It is 1, 000 kilometers wide.
C. It is a box-shaped asteroid. D. It is an asteroid called Didymos.
10. What did the DART spacecraft do first after being sent up?
A. It hid the reflected sunlight. B. It followed the path of the target asteroid.
C. It landed safely on the target asteroid. D. It flew through space to the target asteroid.
11. What does the author think of the result of the DART?
A. Doubtful. B. Unsatisfying. C. Unexpected. D. Useful.
【答案】8. A 9. A 10. B 11. D

D
“A beautiful field of flowers can be a rather noisy place. It’s just that we can’t hear the sounds.” Scientists at Tel Aviv University have conducted a six-year experiment, proving that plants make noise in certain stressful situations.
Plants produce a high frequency (频率) clicking sound, and when short of water, or damaged, the clicks become far more regular. They also made different sounds, depending on whether they were thirsty or injured. “Each plant and each type of stress is related to a specific sound,” said Professor Lilach Hadany, who led the research study.
Focusing particularly on tomatoes, wheat and corn, the plants were placed in a soundproof (隔音的) room and recorded by microphones. Some plants were starved of water, others cut, and a control group was left undamaged. The researchers used an algorithm (算法) to separate the noises, successfully telling the difference between the sounds depending on whether they were dry or cut. The algorithm did this in a greenhouse setting which included far more surrounding sounds, but it was still able to recognize the particular cries for help of the plants.
On average, the human ear can hear sounds up to around 20kHz, while the sounds produced by plants are in the 40-80kHz region, far beyond our hearing. “The sounds made by plants can’t be heard by humans but can probably be heard by various animals, such as bats, mice and insects,” Hadany tells us. Though this has yet to be proven, it’s possible that these creatures use this information to choose which plants to eat.
A study led by Reda Hassanien of China Agricultural University in Beijing years ago, also proved that plants reacted to sound waves, with some plants greatly increasing their yield. While evidence shows that plants can react to sounds, there’s no evidence today that they can actually hear them.
12. What can we know from the six-year experiment?
A. Plants of different types make the sound of the same frequency.
B. Plants produce more regular sound in certain stressful situations.
C. Plants make sounds with a much lower frequency when stressed.
D. Plants make the sound of the same frequency whatever the situation.
13. What is the algorithm used for in the research?
A. To record the sounds. B. To control the sounds.
C. To produce the sounds. D. To identify the sounds.
14. What has been proven by scientists according to the passage?
A. Plants can hear each other’s cry for help.
B. Animals can hear the sounds made by plants.
C. Plants can make sounds and respond to sound waves.
D Animals decide what to eat based on the sounds plants make.
15. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A. Sounds That We Can’t Hear
B. Beautiful Songs from Plants
C. Plants React to Different Types of Stress
D. Plants Talk, Especially When Stressed
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. D

I vividly remember the first time a teacher told me how to learn. Not what to learn. One Friday afternoon our history teacher showed us a way to learn lists of key words and ideas — using ages and stories. In just a few minutes he proved how easy it was to take charge of the memory process. ___16___
What a pity I didn’t meet him until I was 15! Even more depressing is that many students are never shown how to learn. ___17___ So, in case you weren’t one of the lucky ones, here are some important things to learn about how learning really works.
___18___ It’s no good just being there for a lesson. You have to be involved, use learning skills, and know which ones work best for you. Start with these tips and tricks every month!
Don’t check your memory too soon. There’s not much point in testing yourself straightway.___19___ Instead, wait until it’s a bit more challenging to remember what you’ve watched, read or been told. Recapping (概括) it then will leave a much stronger trace in your brain.
Learners don’t need to be loners. Did you get many chances to learn collaboratively (合作地) ? If not, what a shame! It plays a big part in remembering well. ___20___
Above all, don’t be held back by any memory myths you picked up at school. Take steps like these to start remembering more, and be a “class act” in all your learning from here!
A. Reading isn’t great for memory.
B. Learning in company when you can.
C. Learning isn’t an event, it’s a process.
D. That’s just short term memory, and it quickly fades.
E. We hoped to know how to do it in a fun, fast and effective way.
F. In fact they often end up with some very unhelpful ideas about memory.
G. He sparked an interest in arts and science of learning that still inspires me today.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs in my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” she grinned. “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Dear, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called saying that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

【答案】
I was completely knocked out by the news. My heart sank, and I didn’t know what to do. “How can I perform alone?” I asked myself, tears welling up. But my mom said gently, “You’ve practiced so hard; don’t let fear stop you.” That night, I stayed up thinking about whether I should go on stage by myself. Finally, I decided that I would try, because it was for the food bank.
Finally came the big moment. As I walked onto the stage, my hands were shaking, and I could hardly breathe. I closed my eyes and remembered the days when Emma and I sang together, which gave me courage. When I opened my mouth, my voice came out clear and steady. The audience clapped warmly, and I felt proud of myself for the first time. What mattered most was not perfection, but that I dared to try.

There is a saying about the south-western Chinese province of Guizhou: “Not three feet of flat land, not three days without rain, not a family with three silver coins.” But,with the help of a spicy sauce, Tao Huabi, also known as “China’s hottest woman”, has well and truly opposed this rule.
Born in 1947 the eighth daughter of a poor family in a village of mountainous Guizhou, Tao did not go to school and did not learn to read or write.
According to its website the company produces 1.3 million bottles daily, helping the historically poor Guizhou achieve 10. 5% growth—the second fastest of every Chinese province that year, and ahead of the national rate of 6.7%.
As for the godmother herself, an article in Yicai Global describes her as the Queen of a “red kingdom” of chili fields.

C. Unexpected. D. Useful.
D. Animals decide what to eat based on the sounds plants make.
15. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A. Sounds That We Can’t Hear
B. Beautiful Songs from Plants
C. Plants React to Different Types of Stress
D. Plants Talk, Especially When Stressed
