A
About 15 years ago,Andrew McLindon,a businessman and crazy cyclist, was riding his
bike in Austin,Texas,when he thought about Jack,a friend's 12-years-old son.Jack had never
known the joy of biking because he suffered from hydrocephalust(脑水肿),a buildup of fluid in
the brain that often causes balance disturbances.
When he got home,McLindon, now 60,went online and found a three-wheel bike with a
balancing bar, perfect for a child with balance issues.Soon Jack was riding around the street
with his friends, having fun and getting exercise. But there was more,as his friend told McLin-
don,"I'll never forget the smile on his face when my son is interacting with other kids."
That smile launched the McLindon Family Foundation.Funded by donations, the group
works with clinics to find children who can benefit from owning an adaptive bike and to help
make each bike to the particular needs of the child.A bike may include a headrest,a shoulder
belt,a seat belt and so on.The bikes are expensive-$3,000 to 94,000,and that's with the
foundation's producer's discount.For kids lucky enough to get one,they're a life changer.
“We worked with a 14-year-old who has spina bifida(脊柱裂),”says McLindon.“She spent
most days on the couch watching TV.Soon after she got her bike, she was training for special-
needs triathlons(三项全能运动).In a magazine interview, she said,‘I always knew there was
an athlete in me.’”
So far,the foundation has given away 450 bikes,and that's just a start."I do a lot of
things.I run a lot of companies,"McLindon says."But getting these kids their bikes is the most

When romantic partners argue over things like finances, jealousy,or other interpersonal
issues, they tend to employ their current feelings as fuel for a heated argument. But thinking
about the future helps overcome relationship conflicts, according to a University of Waterloo
study just published online in Social Psychological and Personality Science.Alex Huynh,a
doctoral candidate in psychology,is the lead author of the study, which he published with Igor
Grossmann from the University of Waterloo, and Daniel Yang from Yale University.
·6·
Previous research has shown that third-perspective reasoning can be a positive strategy for
reconciliation()of interpersonal struggles.Huynh and his collaborators investigated wheth-
er similar benefits can be induced by simply thinking about the future.Study participants were
instructed to reflect on a recent conflict with a romantic partner or a close friend. One group of
participants were then asked to describe how they would feel about the conflict one year in the
future, while another group was asked to describe how they feel in the present.
The team examined participants'written responses through a text-analysis program for
their use of pronouns-such as I,me,she,he.These choices of pronouns were used to capture
participants'focus on the feelings and behaviour of those involved in the conflict.Written re-
sponses were also examined for forgiveness and reinterpreting the conflict more positively, both
of which implied the participants'use of reasoning strategies.
The researchers found that envisioning()future relationship affected both participants'
focus on their feelings and their reasoning strategies. As a result, participants reported more positivity
about their relationship altogether, especially when study participants extended their thinking about
the relationship a year into the future.
"Our study demonstrates that adopting a future-oriented perspective in the context of a re-
lationship conflict-reflecting on how one might feel a year from now-may be a valuable coping
tool for one's psychological happiness and relationship well-being,"said Huynh.
5.What do romantic partners do in the face of most disagreements?
A.They lose faith in their future.
B.They look forward to a fierce conflict.
C.They focus on their present feelings.
D.They care more about financial problems.
6.What does the underlined word "induced"in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A.Explained.
B.Caused.
C.Reduced.
D.Improved.
7.What do we know about the study?
A.The reasoning strategies in participants'written responses were well worthy of note.
B.Study participants described their recent relationship with their romance partners or
friends.
C.A text-analysis program was employed to examine participants'use of negative words.
D.All the study participants described how they felt both in the present and in the future.
8.What can be the best title of the text?
A.You Have a Year to Solve Your Interpersonal Problems!
B.Beneficial Reasoning Is a Positive Strategy for Reconciliation!
C.Your Current Feelings Are the Real Cause of Your Heated Arguments!
D.Thinking About the Future Is Essential for Relationship Maintenance!

C
Aarrav Anil,the 17-year-old student with a passion for robotics from Bengraluro,invented a
smart spoon that can help people with Parkinson's disease eat with dignity.
Aarrav's interest in creating a smart spoon came from seeing his uncle Arjun who has
Parkinson's disease struggling to feed himself. This disease affects the brain and leads to invol-
untary shaking.Hence, food kept spilling out of his mouth and onto his clothing.Aarray wanted
his uncle to be able to eat by himself with dignity.
Aarrav took to his room with microcontrollers, motors, sensors and a 3-D printer. Not eve-
rything went smoothly."It was frustrating not being able to find the tiny electronics parts I needed here
in India.I had to order some from China, but they took ages to arrive,"Aarrav said.Through
tireless efforts,Aarrav made a first model but the handle was too slippery for his uncle to use so
he had to change it.Then the prototype()went to be tested at the RV College of Physio-
therapy in Bengaluru.
"I've been fine tuning the design based on the college's feedback-that it needs to be wa-
terproof()so that it can be washed without damaging all the electronics inside;and that
it must be detachable(可拆卸的)so it can be cleaned and replaced by a fork,”Aarrav said. The
trials being conducted at the college are expected to be completed by early 2025 and the results will
be published in a medical journal.
7.
Aarrav hopes that his smart spoon will begin to be produced on a small scale when the testing is
complete. While other smart spoons already exist and two US companies are already producing their own
versions, the cost is too high for most Indians.Aarrav's version is estimated to cost around $80.His
hope is that everyone with Parkinson's disease will have access to a smart spoon.
9.What can Aarrav's invention help people with Parkinson's disease do?
A.Maintain their physical balance.
B.Boost their mood and relieve stress.
C.Rid them of uncontrollable shaking.
D.Feed themselves much more easily.
10.What is emphasized about the invention of the smart spoon in Paragraph 3?

Blind imitation()is self-destruction.To those who do not recognize their unique worth,imita-
tion appears attractive;to those who know their strength, imitation is unacceptable.
时
In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful. When I first
learned to cook,I used recipes()and turned out some tasty dishes. But soon I grew bored.
Why follow someone else's way of cooking when I could create my own?Imitating role models is
like using training wheels on a child's bicycle;they help you get going, but once you find your
own balance, you fly faster and farther without relying on them.
In daily life, imitation can hurt us if we subconsciously(下意识地)hold poor role models..
If,as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad,you may have accepted their fear and
pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did.If you do not make strong choices for your-
self, you will get the results of the weak choices of others. In the field of entertainment, our
culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when they step off screen,
their personal lives may be disastrous. If you are going to follow someone, focus on their talent,
not their bad character or unacceptable behaviors.
Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique.Think
of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched
you because their creations were motivated by inspiration not desperation. The world is changed
not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done
inside them.Creative people have an endless resource of ideas. The problem a creator faces is not
running out of material;it is what to do with the material knocking at the door of imagination.
烯
Study your role models, accept the gifts they have given, and leave behind what does not
serve you. Then you can say,"I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors'tragedies and declare
victory, and know that they are cheering on."
13.Imitation proves useful when you
A.know you are unique
B.lose the balance of life
C.begin to learn something new
D.get tired of routine practice
14.According to the author, the world moves on because of those who are
A.desperate to influence others with their knowledge
B.ready to turn their original ideas into reality
C.eager to discover what their ancestors did
D.willing to accept others'ideas
15.The trouble a creator faces is
A.the lack of strong motivation
B.the absence of practical ideas
C.how to search for more materials
D.how to use imagination creatively
16.What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?
A.To highlight the importance of creativity.B.To criticize the characters of role models.
C.To compare imitation with creation.
D.To explain the meaning of success.
