Our Class Sunflower
At the start of this term, our science teacher Ms. Wang gives us a sunflower seed. “Grow it well, and you will learn how a tiny seed turns into a big flower.”, she says softly. Our class carefully puts the seed in a pot filled with fresh soil, then places the pot on the windowsill where it can get morning light.
We make a schedule to take turns looking after the sunflower. Xiao Yu lives just five minutes’ walk from school, so she decides to water it every Tuesday. She always pours water slowly into the soil. Da Wei checks the soil every Thursday; he touches the soil with his fingertips and tells us if it’s too dry or wet. I record its changes: on Day 7, a tiny green shoot pushes through the soil, like a little needle; on Day 20, two round, soft leaves grow.
One month later, we notice the sunflower stops growing. Its leaves turn yellow at the edges. We gather around the pot and feel worried. We run to Ms. Wang’s office to ask for help. She comes to our classroom, looking at the pot and explains, “The soil has used up all its nutrients (营养). You need to add a little fertilizer (化肥) and move the pot to the balcony—there’s more sunlight there.” We hurry to the school garden to get fertilizer, then carry the pot to the balcony carefully. Two weeks later, the sunflower grows taller, and a small yellow flower bud appears at the top. When it finally blooms into a little golden flower, we clap our hands and take a class photo with it.
We are all happy to see the sunflower bloom. This experience teaches us that taking care of something small needs patience—we can’t rush its growth. If we give up easily when it turns yellow, we will never see its beautiful flowers.
24. What does Ms. Wang ask students to do with the sunflower seed?
A. Put the seed in a brown pot.
B. Make a schedule to take turns looking after the sunflower.
C. Grow it well and see how a tiny seed turns into a big flower.
25. When does Xiao Yu water the sunflower?
A. Every Monday B. Every Tuesday C. Every Thursday
26. Why does the sunflower stop growing one month later?
A. It gets too much sun. B. The soil has no nutrients. C. The pot is too small.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Sunflowers grow best in winter.
B. Taking care of things needs patience.
C. It is easy to grow sunflowers.

Some people like a quiet and safe life. They do not want to face surprises. But others love to try new things. They climb mountains, play new sports, or start small businesses. Why do some people enjoy risks while others avoid them?
One reason is that taking risks can make people feel excited. When we do something brave or difficult, our brains give us a happy feeling. That is why many people enjoy roller coasters (过山车) or extreme sports (极限运动). They feel proud after doing something that seemed scary before.
Another reason is that risk-taking helps people learn. When we try something new, we often make mistakes. But we also learn from them. A student who dares to speak English in class may say something wrong, but the experience builds confidence. Little by little, people become braver and learn more about themselves.
Of course, not every risk is good. Some people take risks without thinking. For example, driving too fast or sharing false news online can hurt others. These are reckless risks. A responsible risk-taker, on the other hand, thinks first and plans before acting. They want to stay safe and keep others safe too.
Culture also matters. In some countries, people are taught to explore new things, while in others, being safe and careful is more important. When a place welcomes new ideas, people may take more risks in science, business, or art. But in a place where people value safety, they may see risks as unnecessary.
Taking risks is part of life. If we never try new things, we stop growing. But if we take every risk, we may get hurt. The best way is to find a balance—be brave, but also be careful.
28. Why do many people enjoy roller coasters according to the passage?
A. Because they feel excited and proud after riding them.
B. Because they are very safe and quiet.
C. Because they can learn something new from them.
29. The underlined word “reckless” in paragraph 4 probably means ________.
A. brave and strong B. careful and safe C. careless and dangerous
30. What can we know about responsible risk-takers according to the passage?
A. They take action after thinking about the result.
B. They never try anything new.
C. They take risks to do what they like but forget about safety.
31. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Why People Take Risks
B. How to Stay Safe in Life
C. The Dangers of Risk-Taking
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. A 31. A
【解析】
【导语】本文探讨了人们冒险原因、冒险带来的好处与风险,以及如何负责任地冒险。
【28题详解】

A Put the seed in a brown pot.
B Make a schedule to take turns looking after the sunflower.

六、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共8分,每小题2分)
When Chinese people meet for the first time, they often ask, “May I know your family name, please?” There is no question that family names are very important to the Chinese. They are a part of Chinese culture and values. They also help us learn about Chinese history.
Chinese people usually talk about a famous old book called Baijiaxing when it comes to Chinese family names. It was written a long time ago during the Northern Song Dynasty (朝代). It recorded 504 common family names. But now, there are at least 5,662 Chinese family names in total. Among them, 3,484 are one-character (字) names, 2,032 are two-character names, and 146 are three-character names, which are hardly seen.
Chinese family names have a history of more than 4,000 years. They have changed in the course of historical development. It is not easy to know where they all came from. Sometimes, one family name has many origins (起源). Sometimes, several names come from the same origin.
Chinese family names have gone through thousands of years of development. They are not just words before a person’s name. They are an important part of Chinese culture. Experts (专家) are trying to put Chinese family names into UNESCO’s Memory of the World program. They hope more people around the world can learn about Chinese family names and their culture.
