The library may offer a language group you could join. If you have difficulties reading, ask about special reading opportunities. And you might find it relaxing to bring your small kid to a half-hour Story Time while you sit quietly in a corner with a good book.
Start a business using the help of your local library. If you want to have a business of your own, go to the library. In the library’s books and on its computers, you can find information on starting a business. Many libraries will offer printing, faxing and database services you need.

①For a long time, Iceland was famous as one of the few countries in the world with no mosquitoes (蚊子). However, a recent discovery has changed this fact.
②The story began on a Thursday evening in October. Björn Haltason, a man who loves studying insects, found a strange insect. He quickly caught it because he thought it might be a mosquito. Excited by his find, he continued to look and later discovered two more of the same insects nearby. He carefully collected all of them and sent his findings to the Icelandic Institute (研究所) of Natural History.
③At the study center, an entomologist (昆虫学家) named Matthias Alfreðsson studied the insects. He made sure they were mosquitoes, specifically a special type called Culiseta annulata that can survive in very cold winters. This finding was very meaningful. It was the first official record of mosquitoes living and growing outdoors in Iceland. He explained that this type of mosquito is special because it can survive in the cold Icelandic winter. These insects stay in warm places during the coldest months, which allows them to live through the winter. Before this, mosquitoes were only sometimes found on planes arriving in the country, but they never managed to survive outside.
④The main reason for this change, scientists say, is because of climate change. As our planet becomes warmer, insects can move to and live in new areas. Iceland is warming at a speed of four times faster than the average in the Northern Hemisphere (北半球). This rapid warming makes the environment more suitable for mosquitoes.
⑤This discovery ends Iceland’s long history of being a mosquito-free country. It clearly shows how climate change is influencing our world in real and clear ways, even changing which animals can live where.

The modern world runs on energy. However, in the past human society used very little energy like wind, water and fire could provide. There are many different ways to create energy, but some ways are harmful to the environment.
Fossil fuels (化石燃料) are the most common kind of energy. They include coal, oil, and natural gas. First, people have to dig them from the ground. This can sometimes harm the environment. However, scientists are creating cleaner and better ways to do that these days. So the environment is not harmed as much as before. But when people burn these fossil fuels, they can give off a lot of harmful gases, which is considered to be one of the greatest causes of global warming. This might harm the environment.
Tidal (潮汐) energy is another way to make electricity. It uses the ocean tides to make electricity. But some kinds of tidal energy can kill many fishes and other sea animals. Also dams can create lakes and lots of clean energy, but they change the way that rivers run. So they can do great harm to the balance of nature around the lakes and along the rivers.
Nuclear (核) energy is a very powerful form of energy. It is cheap and very clean. However, many people are afraid of it because there have been some very serious accidents in the past which caused great harm both to humans and nature. But the technology is much better these days. Many countries are starting to use nuclear energy more.

I often hear some students say English is difficult, and it gives them a headache. So they can’t learn it well. But English is very easy for me. I’m good at it. I’m very glad to tell you something about how I study English.
First, I think an interest in English is very important. When I was in Grade One, we had a new subject-English. It was fresh for me. I was interested in it, so I worked hard at it. Soon we had an English exam and I got a very good mark. How happy I was! After that, I learned English harder and harder. Our English teacher often teaches us English songs. The songs sound nice. I often think how interesting English is!
Second, I think English is a foreign language. I should learn it well in the following ways: Listen to the teacher carefully, speak bravely, read aloud and have a good vocabulary (词汇). Then practice again and again, never be tired. And I also have a good habit: Asking whenever I have a question, I must make it clear by asking our English teacher. How happy I am when I understand!
Besides this, I often read English stories, jokes and easy novels. From these I know English is not only interesting, but also useful. They help me understand a lot of things. So to do more reading is an important way to learn English well.
And I also do some exercises from our class magazines, and I often write English diaries. English has become a close friend of mine.
Now I have learned English for more than two years. I always keep the first position in our school. From these words, I hope every student can learn English well.

When you are reading something in English, you may often encounter a new word. What’s the best way to know it?
You may look it up in the English-Chinese dictionary. It will tell you everything about the word: the pronunciation, the part of speech (词性), the Chinese meaning and how to use this word. But how can you find it in a dictionary quickly?
First, all the English words are in the alphabetical (按字母顺序的) order. In the dictionary, you can first see the words beginning with A, then B, C, D… That means, if there are two words, “do” and “put”, “do” will be before “put”. Then, if there are two words both beginning with the same letter, you may look at the second letter, then the third, the fourth ... for example, “pat” is before “picture”, and “bald” is before “balloon”.
Then what can you do to learn about the word after finding it in the dictionary?
First, you should choose the information wisely. You can choose the part of speech and the meaning by relating to the passage! It is necessary to compare the information when you choose. Only in this way can we know which information is more accurate (准确的). We can decide which explanation to use by putting it in the passage. After that, check whether the passage is fluent (流畅的) with the meaning we get from a dictionary.
1.What’s the first step of looking up a word in a dictionary?
A.Locate the word. B.Compare the information.
C.Check the passage. D.Pronounce the word.
2.The underlined word “letter” in Paragraph 3 means “________” in Chinese.
A.信件 B.字母 C.标志 D.顺序
3.What’s the right order of the following words in a dictionary?
①sentence ②secure ③humorous ④guard
A.①②③④ B.③④①② C.④③①② D.④③②①
4.How can we choose the meaning of a new word wisely?
A.By knowing how to use it. B.By relating it to the passage.
C.By looking it up in different dictionaries. D.By knowing its alphabetical order.
5.What is this passage mainly about?
A.How to read quickly. B.The importance of the dictionary.
C.How to use the English-Chinese dictionary. D.The different meanings of a word.
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.D 4.B 5.C
【导语】本文主要介绍了当阅读英文遇到生词时,使用英汉词典是了解生词的最佳方式,它能提供单词的发音、词性、中文意思和用法等信息,还介绍了如何快速在词典中找到单词以及找到单词后如何明智地选择其信息,展现了英汉词典在阅读英文时的重要作用及使用方法。
1.细节理解题。根据“First, all the English words are in the alphabetical (按字母顺序的) order. In the dictionary, you can first see the words beginning with A, then B, C, D...”以及后文举例说明如何按字母顺序找单词可知,在词典中查单词的第一步是定位单词,而不是比较信息、检查文章或发音。故选A。
2.词句猜测题。根据“Then, if there are two words both beginning with the same letter, you may look at the second letter, then the third, the fourth ... for example, “pat” is before “picture”, and “bald” is before “balloon”.”可知,这里说的是如果两个单词首字母相同,就看第二个字母,以此类推,所以“letter”意思是“字母”。故选B。
3.推理判断题。根据“First, all the English words are in the alphabetical (按字母顺序的) order.”以及单词按字母顺序排列的规则,“sentence”首字母“s”,“secure”首字母“s”,“humorous”首字母“h”,“guard”首字母“g”,首字母顺序为“g”<“h”<“s”,首字母和第二个字母相同的“sentence”和“secure”,“sentence”第三个字母“n”在字母表中排在“secure”第三个字母“c”后,因此secure排在sentence前,所以顺序是④③②①。故选D。
4.细节理解题。根据“First, you should choose the information wisely. You can choose the part of speech and the meaning by relating to the passage!”可知,可以通过将单词与文章联系起来明智地选择其词性和意思。故选B。
5.主旨大意题。文章主要围绕如何使用英汉词典展开,包括如何快速找到单词以及找到后如何选择其信息等,而不是如何快速阅读、词典的重要性或一个单词的不同意思。故选C。
Purple power
The last time you went to buy a coffee or a Coke, what kind of cup did it come in?
In Petaluma, California, US, to-go drinks are now served in a type of purple cup. Each cup has a QR code (二维码). More than 60 special bins have been set up around the city to collect these reusable (可重复使用的) cups. Workers will come later to clean them and send them back to shops for reuse, reported CBS News.
The city-wide project is the first of its kind in the US. It aims to stop the use of disposable (一次性的) cups, which have been around since the early 1900s. Before the invention of disposable cups, people shared wooden or metal (金属的) cups for drinking. Lawrence Luellen, a lawyer in Boston, US, was worried about the spread of germs (细菌). So he invented a disposable “Health Cup” made of paper in 1907. It quickly caught on, especially after the serious Spanish flu in 1918.
Disposable cups are common. Today’s disposable cups also have polystyrene (聚苯乙烯) in them. This type of plastic helps keep the drinks warm. However, it takes about 500 years to completely break down. Every year, people in the US throw away 50 billion single-use cups, according to The Guardian, This is bad for our planet. For example, polystyrene turns into small pieces with time. Animals may eat them and get hurt.
Since its start on Aug. 1, the purple cup project in Petaluma has received wide attention, more than 30 businesses have joined in, including Starbucks and Coca-Cola. They are tracking (追踪) the QR codes on the cups to see how many of them are being reused. The project will end in November. What comes next depends on how it goes, reported The Guardian.
1.How does the writer start this text?
A.By telling a story. B.By giving an example.
C.By asking a question. D.By showing a saying.
2.What is the project in Petaluma mainly about?
A.Adding QR codes to disposable cups. B.Serving to-go drinks in reusable cups.
C.Setting up special bins for paper cups. D.Producing all paper cups in purple.
3.Why did Lawrence Luellen invent the disposable “Health Cup”?
A.To remind people to drink healthy drinks. B.To make people’s lives more convenient.
C.To prevent the spread of germs. D.To save more wood and metal.
4.What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A.Disposable cups cause environmental problems.
B.Disposable cups are made from different things.
C.Disposable cups won’t harm our health at all.
D.Disposable cups have many advantages.
5.What can we infer about the project from the passage?
A.The project was a huge success. B.The results of it need to be checked.
C.People don’t fully support it. D.More cities will join it in the future.

①What comes to your mind when you read the word “robot”? Many people imagine large, modern machines in car factories or think of supermen from science films. Few of us think about the past. In fact, people built machines with human abilities thousands of years ago.
②Philo, an ancient Greek inventor, built a robot thousands of years ago. If someone placed a cup in the robot’s hand, it would mix water and wine (葡萄酒) to make a drink. However, it wasn’t popular because people didn’t need robots to work at that time.
③Another ancient robot was a robotic arm called “The Claw”. Polybius, a Greek writer, wrote about it in 213 BC. It was built during a war with the Romans and it was hung over the city wall towards the sea. When a Roman ship came close, the arm picked up the front of it and lifted it into the air. Then the ship fell backward into the sea and sank. Again, we don’t know whether the machine was built, but it was possible with Ancient Greek technology.
④Leonardo da Vinci, the famous artist, loved designing robots. Few of his designs were built, but his plans were perfect. Mark Rosheim, a robot engineer, still learns from those ideas when he works! One of Leonardo da Vinci’s robots was a lion. He built it in 1515. It could walk and send flowers! In 2009, engineers used the plans to rebuild the robot lion. It worked very well.
⑤As time went by, more robots were built, and they could do more difficult and important work, such as driving a car, dancing and drawing a picture, etc. Although modern technology has moved on, these historical robots still amaze people today.

①Years ago, my mother had a terrible earache. It hurt a lot and wouldn’t go away. Finally, she went to the hospital. The doctor pushed an otoscope (检耳镜)into her ear, and within seconds, he pulled it out and looked at her in the eyes. “Have you been putting Q-tips in your ears?” he asked. Like so many others, my mother had been using Q-tips to clean her ears. And her use of Q-tips had caused an ear problem.
②Q-tips have long been seen as household basics. They are used for different kinds of beauty upkeep (美容保养), arts, home cleaning and baby care. Every box of Q-tips comes with a warning “Do not put this in your ear.” ________
③Doctors see this happen every day. “People come in with ear problems caused by Q-tips all the time.” says Dennis Fitzgerald, a doctor in Washington, D.C.“People say they only use them to put on makeup (化妆), but we know what else they’ re using them for.”
④The Q-tip was invented (发明) in 1923 by a man named Leo Gerstenzang. He came up with the idea after watching his wife use a toothpick (牙签)—— with a cotton ball on one end to carefully clean their young child. These early Q-tips were similar to those sold today except for a few key differences. They had cotton on only one side instead of both sides. Since they were made for baby care, not for any other possible use, the end without cotton was just smooth wood, no extra parts. It wasn’t until the 1970s that Q-tip boxes began to warn against pushing these things inside ears.
⑤Today, Q-tips are one of the most common causes of ear problems.“There’s really no way to stop it but take Q-tips off the market,” says Fitzgerald. “And that is, you know, impossible.”
1.Why does the writer talk about her mother’s experience in Paragraph 1?
A.To show Q-tips can be dangerous. B.To explain why Q-tips are useful.
C.To introduce the history of Q-tips. D.To teach the readers to use Q-tips.
2.Which sentence can be put in the ________?
A.Luckily, most families choose to keep it in mind.
B.However, many people just don’t pay attention to it.
C.As a result, more and more people stop buying Q-tips now.
D.Also, doctors advise keeping them out of reach of children.
3.What does the underlined phrase“what else” in Paragraph 3 refer to (指代)?
A.Creating art. B.Caring for babies. C.Cleaning ears. D.Putting on makeup.
4.What do the early Q-tips look like?
A. B. C. D.
5.What do we know from Fitzgerald’s words in Paragraph 5?
A.People will never use Q-tips any more.
B.Q-tips are the biggest cause of ear problems.
C.It is hard to avoid using Q-tips in people’s lives.
D.The government should stop the sale of Q-tips.
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.C 4.B 5.C

4.推理判断题。根据“They had cotton on only one side instead of both sides.”可知,早期棉签只有一面有棉,另一端是光滑木头,没有额外结构。故选B。
5.推理判断题。根据他的话“没有办法阻止它但要把棉签下架,几乎不可能”强调了棉签的普及与难以遏制的使用现状。故选C。
The change is coming to how books are written, with AI like ChatGPT playing a part. A growing number of people are using ChatGPT to write books for sale. So far sales have been slow, but human writers are still worried. They are afraid that the books created by ChatGPT might hurt the publishing (出版) industry. Brett Schickler is a salesman in Rochester, New York. Until recently, he never imagined he could be a writer. However, after learning about the ChatGPT program, Schickler found he had a good chance. “The idea of writing a book finally seemed possible,” said Schickler, “and I thought I could do this.”
Using the AI software, Schickler created his first book, a 30-page children’s e-book, in a few hours. He sold it online and made less than $100. While that may not sound like much, it is enough to make him want to create other books using the software. “I could see people making a whole career (职业) out of this,” said Schickler.
There were over 200 e-books online that said ChatGPT was a writer or co-writer. And the number is increasing daily. But because of the nature of ChatGPT and many writers’ failure to admit (承认) that they have used it, it is nearly impossible to get a full count of how many e-books may have been written by AI.
Some professional (专业的) writers are becoming worried about the effects that ChatGPT could have on the book publishing industry. Mary Rasenberger is the director of a writers’ group. She said, “This is something we really need to be worried about. These books will flood the market and a lot of writers are going to be out of work.”

C.Angry and disappointed. D.Surprised and pleased.
3.What does the underlined word “flood” mean in paragraph4?
A.Fill. B.Control. C.Explore. D.Serve.
4.From the text, we can infer that ________.
A.writers don’t want to spend money on ChatGPT
B.e-books written by AI are not popular with people at all
C.writers have no interest in using ChatGPT to write books
D.it’s difficult to know how many e-books written by AI there are
5.What does the text mainly talk about?

Has it been a while since your last visit to a public library? If so, you may be surprised to learn that libraries have changed for the better. In the libraries, you can develop your love of knowledge, meet interesting people, or find out how to start a business.
Check out a book. You’ll find it easier to get a copy of whatever you’re looking for, thanks to a cooperative network of area libraries. Through such networks, libraries share their books with each other. Once the book you’ve requested is sent to the nearest library, they will tell you by e-mail, so you can pick it up.
Check out other items. The library is now a multimedia place with information in many formats. You can borrow movies on DVDs, music on CDs, and popular magazines. Some libraries even borrow toys and games. If a popular magazine you want isn’t offered and the library keeps a list of such requests, they may bring it in when enough interest is shown.
Join targeted reading groups. Libraries will often hold reading-group meeting for various age groups. Perhaps you’d like to learn a language or improve your English.

We live in an age when it is possible to use different kinds of energy. Whatever kind of energy we use, it should be good for people and environment.

C.How to use the English-Chinese dictionary. D.The different meanings of a word.

1.What can we know about Brett Schickler from the text?
