One day, you open the fridge and find some moldy (发霉的) food. But before you can throw it away, your mother stops you. She doesn’t want to waste food. She cuts off the moldy part and eats the rest. Is it safe to do this?
Mold can grow on almost all kinds of food. Mold is usually green, white, black or grey. Mold makes food soft and changes its color. Moldy food tastes quite bad, and it’s not safe to eat.
If you find mold in soft food, just throw it away. Soft food such as bread, tomatoes or hot dogs, usually contains water. This allows mold to grow easily below its surface. Bacteria (细菌) can also grow along with it.
But it is easy to remove mold from hard food. The mold can’t grow very deeply inside this kind of food. You should cut about 2.5 cm around and below the mold to remove it. It’s OK to cut the moldy parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is completely covered with mold, you should throw it away.
Most kinds of mold are bad for us. But some kinds of mold can be used to make food. For example, penicillium (青霉素) can be used to make many types of cheeses, such as blue cheese. These cheeses are safe to eat—and they are quite delicious as well.

(1) Taking notes is a common but useful study skill. But if your notes are messy and unclear, you’re not going to get much use out of them. Now we’ll show you how to make your notes as effective (有效的) as possible.
(2) First, you should be an active listener. When taking notes, many students write down every word without really understanding its meaning. This is completely wrong. While you’re in class, the most important thing is to listen carefully and understand what your teacher is saying instead of writing it down,
(3) Take down only key words to help you review what you have learned after class. Usually, your writing speed falls far behind of your teacher’s speaking speed. It’s unrealizable for you to write down every word the teacher is saying. Taking down just key words helps you save time and keep up with the teacher.
(4) What your notes look like is also important. If your notes are messy and difficult to read, you’ll be less likely to go back to studying them. So make sure your notes are clear and easy to read. Many people like to add some colors to the notes to make the information easier to read. This is because colors make your notes look more interesting and clearer.

Spending time on social media (社交媒体) has become a way of life for many children. But is it healthy?
By using social media, all of us get too much information. Some information has a bad influence on children. Dr. Eshleman studies children’s problems. “Children may take part in dangerous activities online or have online-only friends. Using social media will also change children’s personal characters. If children are asked to stay away from social media and do their homework over and over again, they may get angry easily,” says Dr. Eshleman. “That’s why children should use social media carefully.”
Dr. Eshleman wants to offer some helpful advice to parents.
First, make sure children are ready. Even if they are old enough, they may not be ready for it. Parents can find out from how their kids communicate with others.
Second, talk to children. From the beginning, it’s important to tell children what social media is and what it can be used for. Ask why they’re interested in it and what they want to use it for.
Third, limit (限制) screen time. Dr Eshleman suggests limiting screen time to two hours a day for children. She points out that parents should also make sure their children can get enough physical activity.

Parental support plays an important role in a child’s growth and development. When parents provide love and support, children grow well and reach their full potential (潜力). The story of Lily is a great example.
When Lily was little, she liked to study everything around her. Her parents decided to support her in every possible way.
Her father Mr Smith is a skilled carpenter (木匠). He built a workshop in their yard for Lily to do hands-on activities. He taught her simple woodworking skills and encouraged her to create her own projects, whether it was a birdhouse or a toy. Meanwhile, Mrs Smith, an artist, used her paints and brushes to help Lily make her creations more beautiful.
As Lily grew older, her parents continued to support her interest. They sent her to take art classes every week. They would proudly display her works around their house.
Supported by her parents, Lily went to study in a famous art college later. There she studied hard and learned from excellent teachers. Finally she became a great artist like her mother.
“I can’t be successful without my parents’ great love and support,” Lily expressed during one of her art exhibitions (展览).

If your notes are messy and difficult to read you’ll be less likely to go back to studying them. So make sure your notes are clear and easy to read. Many people like to add some colors to the notes to make the information easier to read. This is because colors make your notes look more interesting and clearer.

Spending time on social media (社交媒体) has become a way of life for many children But is it healthy?
