Beethoven, one of the world’s most-loved composers, is famous for his nine symphonies (交响曲). Before he died, he began a new symphony, but n 51 finished it. Computer scientists and musicians now used artificial intelligence to finish his 10th Symphony.
Ludwig van Beethoven was born over 250 years ago, yet his music is still played daily around the world. His work is often used as the background music in movies, TV shows, and even c 52 for children.
A symphony is a long, complicated piece of classical music, usually divided into four parts. The four parts are often l 53 by “themes”—repeated musical ideas that tie the whole piece together. When Beethoven died in 1827, he had some ideas for a 10th Symphony. But all that he left behind were some notes about the piece and a few short bits of written music.
In 2019, a special team of musicians, computer scientists, and historians was formed. Their g 54 : to try to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony to celebrate his 250th birthday. The team didn’t just want to complete the symphony. They wanted to come as c 55 as possible to producing the symphony that Beethoven meant to write. That’s where deep learning came in.
To use an AI to help with the symphony, the team turned every piece of music that Beethoven ever wrote into a form the computer could understand. By i 56 the program to all of Beethoven’s music, the AI could look for patterns in the way Beethoven wrote.
Other members of the team worked to figure out what Beethoven was planning to do.
One early test told the team they were on the right track. They took a few minutes of music created by the AI, and played it for Beethoven experts, musicians, and reporters. Nobody could tell the difference.
F 57 , the AI had the challenge of trying to connect the little musical bits into a symphony. It took over two years to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony. Not simply a melody, but 40 minutes of music for a full orchestra.
So, Beethoven now has a 10th Symphony. And though Beethoven didn’t write it all, the team feels sure that the music is very much like what he might have written, if he’d had the chance.

根据“Before he died, he began a new symphony”结合首字母提示可知,此处应指去世之前开始创造新的交响曲,但是没有完成,never“从未”。故填(n)ever。
根据“repeated musical ideas that tie the whole piece together”结合首字母提示可知,此处应指交响乐的四个部分是被主题连接起来的,be linked by“被……连接”。故填(l)inked。
根据“to try to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony to celebrate his 250th birthday”结合首字母提示可知,此处应是不定式表示目的,因此应指目标,goal“目标”,可数名词,此处目标只有一个,因此应用名词单数形式。故填(g)oal。
根据“The team didn’t just want to complete the symphony. They wanted to come as … as possible to producing the symphony that Beethoven meant to write.”
根据“By … the program to all of Beethoven’s music, the AI could look for patterns in the way Beethoven wrote.” 故填(i)ntroducing。
根据“the AI had the challenge of trying to connect the little musical bits into a symphony”结合上文可知,前文讲述了团队一系列准备工作和初步测试等,此处表示人工智能面临的挑战是将这些小的音乐片段连接成交响乐,这是整个过程的最后一步,因此用finally“最后”。故填(F)inally。
D. Answer the questions
I was raised by my grandma in Arkansas, and she shaped the way I see the world. Grandma was always graceful. She spoke softly and walked slowly with her hands behind her back. I copied her every move, and our neighbors called me her shadow.
When I was thirteen, I moved to California to live with my mother. My new house was a world away from Grandma’s little home. In Arkansas, we listened to the news and fun radio shows. My grandma seldom had visitors. Even when she did have visitors, those elderly friends of hers were well-behaved, just like my grandma. In California, my mother played loud music on a record player. She wore lipstick (口红) and rouge (胭脂).The house was often filled with the laughter and loud talking of her guests, who kept rushing in and out. I clearly didn’t fit in. I walked around my room like Grandma—with my hands behind my back.
My mother watched me for two weeks. Then, one night, she sat me down. “Maya,” she said. “I know you don't like me because I am not like your grandma. I am not. But I am your mother and I am working hard to keep this roof over your head and to take care of you. When you go to school, the teacher will smile at you and you’ll smile back. Other students you don’t even know will smile and you’ll smile. If you can force a smile for strangers, do it for me. I’ll appreciate it.”
She placed her hand on my cheek and smiled. “Come on, baby. Smile for Mommy.” She made a funny face and, against my wishes, I smiled. She kissed me on the lips and started to cry. “That's the first time I've seen you smile. It’s a beautiful smile. Mother’s beautiful daughter can smile.”
I had never been called beautiful before, and no one in my memory had ever called me a daughter. That day, I learned just how powerful a smile could be.
58.The author wasn’t raised by her mother when she was a kid, was she?
59.What made the neighbors of the author’s grandma call the author “Grandma’s shadow”?
60.The author said, “My new house was a world away from Grandma’s little home.” What specific details in the passage tell us about this? Write at least two points.
61.Why did the mother tell the author that she was working hard for her?
62.How did the mother finally make the author smile when they talked one night?
63.What did the smile mean to the author and her mother? (Write at least two points for each person.)
To the author:
To the mother:
58.No, she wasn’t. 59.Because the author copied her grandma’s every move. 60.① In Arkansas, they listened to the news and fun radio shows; in California, the mother played loud music on a record player. ② Grandma seldom had visitors, and her visitors were well-behaved elderly friends; the mother's house was often filled with laughing and loud-talking guests who rushed in and out. 61.Because she knew the author didn’t like her (since she was not like grandma) and wanted the author to understand her efforts and accept her. 62.She made a funny face. 63. Firstly, it was the first time she was called “beautiful” and “daughter”, feeling loved. Secondly, she learned the power of a smile. Firstly, she was deeply moved to see her daughter smile for the first time. Secondly, it meant her daughter might start accepting her, improving their mother-daughter relationship.
58.根据“I was raised by my grandma in Arkansas”可知,作者童年由奶奶抚养,故反义疑问句回答为否定。故填No, she wasn’t.。
59.根据“I copied her every move, and our neighbors called me her shadow”可知,“模仿每一个动作”是邻居称呼的核心原因。故填Because the author copied her grandma’s every move.。
60.根据“In Arkansas, we listened to the news and fun radio shows...clearly didn’t fit in. I walked around my room like Grandma—with my hands behind my back.” 故填① In Arkansas, they listened to the news and fun radio shows; in California, the mother played loud music on a record player. ② Grandma seldom had visitors, and her visitors were well-behaved elderly friends; the mother’s house was often filled with laughing and loud-talking guests who rushed in and out.
61.根据“I know you don’t like me because I am not like your grandma. I am not. But I am your mother and I am working hard to keep this roof over your head and to take care of you.” Because she knew the author didn’t like her (since she was not like grandma) and wanted the author to understand her efforts and accept her.。
62.根据“She made a funny face and, against my wishes, I smiled.” She made a funny face.。
故填①Firstly, it was the first time she was called “beautiful” and “daughter”, feeling loved. Secondly, she learned the power of a smile. ②Firstly, she was deeply moved to see her daughter smile for the first time. Secondly, it meant her daughter might start accepting her, improving their mother-daughter relationship.

The title of this photo is “The Moment of School”. It was taken during last year’s autumn sports day, and captured our class relay team crossing the finish line. In the image, four students are passing the baton with determined expressions, while classmates cheer wildly in the background. The golden sunlight highlights our unity and energy.
This moment symbolizes not only our teamwork but also the spirit of overcoming challenges together. Whenever I look at it, I’m reminded of how we practiced tirelessly, supporting one another despite setbacks. It represents growth, friendship, and the joy of collective effort.
For me, this photo is a treasure of my junior high life. It reflects the warmth of our campus community and the unforgettable memories we’ve created. It teaches me that success lies not just in winning but in the journey we share.

Have you ever shouted at your computer because it wasn’t working? Of course, your computer can’t “shout” back. But AI researchers have been working on computers that can argue and perhaps even win debates with humans.
IBM scientists recently published a paper in Nature about their new AI system—Project Debater. It can debate with people in front of a live audience. After listening to arguments from its opponent, the system can search around 400 million online articles in less than five minutes. And then it looks for ideas that can support its own argument.
Testing on the system began in 2019. When it debated with Harish Natarajan, a professional debater who holds the world record for the most debate competition victories. The topic was about subsidizing preschool (资助幼儿园) and Project Debater argued to support this idea. Although Project Debater lost the debate in the end, the audience said it performed very well. Interestingly, 58 percent of the audience said that Project Debater increased their knowledge about the topic—only 20 percent said the same about Natarajan.
According to Scientific American, results show that the system is able to form logical statements However, ________. Their goal is to help humans make better decisions, according to Ranit Aharanoy, manager of the Project Debater team. “It can debate both sides, so it can very quickly help you understand both sides of the problem, thus you can have a wider view of the problem and make a more thoughtful decision.” Aharanoy said.
Let’s wait and see how the Project Debater will develop in the near future.

Have you ever looked at a simple drawing and felt something deep inside? That’s the magic that Feng Zikai, the father of Chinese cartoons, could create 45 his works show the joys and sorrows of life, full of kindness and care.
Feng was born in 1898 in Zhejiang Province. He grew up in a wealthy family, but he didn’t enjoy the traditional studies his father valued. 46 , he loved art from a young age. He even borrowed dyes (染料) from the family shop to color illustrations in his father’s books. After his father passed away, Feng became known as the “Little Artist” in his town. At school, a teacher named Li Shutong encouraged him to 47 his passion. Li taught Feng to sketch from real life, not just to trace (临摹) pictures. He also said that a good artist needs both skill and good character-an idea deeply influencing Feng Zikai’s art.
After graduation, Feng worked as an art teacher in Shanghai, but he wanted more training. In 1921, he went to Tokyo to study Japanese and European art. Inspired by the Japanese artist Takehisa Yumeji (竹久梦二), he returned home 48 fresh ideas about his ink paintings. Back in China, he joined a group of writers and artists. His drawings soon appeared in popular magazines, making art available to everyone. These works became known as manhua, a type of Chinese cartoon. Feng also designed book covers, illustrated (插图的) books, and 49 magazines, sharing his ideas about kindness and caring for people.
Feng had a kind heart. He loved all living things, especially children. He believed that the most precious thing in the world is a person and children are full of life and spirit. He said teaching children was simple—“Just let them stay a child, and never let them 50 .” Through his art and caring ideas, Feng Zikai continues to inspire people today.
