I grew up in a remote mountain town in the Philippines. My family led a fairly idyllic life, raising goats and growing vegetables and fruits. My brothers and I would play in the nearby river and mountains, reading and doing all the fun things in the nature without worries.
Later I went to college abroad, and I would go back about once a year to visit. That’s when I started to notice changes in my hometown. I watched the river turn from clear to brown to black. Houses and farms replaced the trees. There was smog, and plastic garbage piled up. Seeing my childhood home go from a clean mountain town to a deforested, polluted, and overcrowded place really impacted me. Over time, I began to see my hometown as a place of unsustainable development.
While I worked on addressing deforestation with the United Nations in Indonesia, I vividly remembered seeing forests burned into black landscapes as far as the eye could see. Experiences like that have both terrified me and lit a fire within me to work harder. Thankfully, I began to see that there is another path. I saw success stories in places I worked-Indonesia, Costa Rica, Ecuador-places that are investing in nature and changing the culture and the mindset of what development looks like. I saw places realizing not only economic benefits-from, say, tourism—but also more benefits of ecosystem services.
The work of WWF and other organizations is critical in promoting success stories according to their local context. Each community, region, and country is different, so solutions must meet their different needs. Coming from a rural community in a developing country gave me a clear outlook on addressing ecology and sustainability issues and is something I carry with me in my work.
4. What does the underlined word “idyllic” in paragraph I mean?
A. Simple and peaceful. B. Busy and noisy.
C. Quiet and boring. D. Tough and tiring.
5. What impressed the author after he went to college?
A. Smog and garbage in the city.
B. Beautiful rivers in different colors.
C. Houses and farms in foreign countries.
D. Damaged environment in his hometown.
6. What inspired the author to work harder?
A. Success stories he learned. B. Economic benefits from tourism.
C. Some disasters he witnessed. D. Slow development of his hometown.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Communities are faced with common challenges.
B. People have different outlooks on rural development.
C. Ecology issues should be addressed locally and differently.
D. Organizations play the most important role in sustainability.

It usually takes a generation or two to measure the full effects of changes in technology and the influence that these changes have on our lives.
We have just gone through another industrial revolution (变革) with the creation of the Internet. You wouldn’t know life before the Internet, but it is very different now. Just like when I was a kid, I wouldn’t have known what life was like before television. However, the fact is that we are seeing what is happening now before our very eyes. It is all mostly good, but some of it has a bad influence as well.
The past years has seen the rise of social media as the source of communication and information. Our little handheld phones have become our window to the world round the clock, where people can share experiences with others all around the planet.
But as with most things, we have seen the downsides of social media. The spreading of false news, online bullying (欺凌), and unpleasant images are just some of the downsides.
We are seeing young people losing themselves in their screens by checking things on social media or having thoughts of self-harm. Older generations say “just turn off the phone”, but they don’t realize that young people are conditioned to live in that online world and it is impossible to turn it off.
That is why the government is now looking for the prevention by different means. And one of them is raising the age limits for social media users. But how would that work? I find it fun to think that my older Boomer generation is going to try to block social media access and outsmart these teens. We know who will win that one! But as I said at the start, we are seeing the effects of this technology after a couple of generations and we need to do something about it.
8. What is the author’s opinion about the revolution caused by the Internet?
A. It will last for a short time. B. It has more bad influences.
C. We can do nothing about it. D. We can see it shaping our life.
9. What is an advantage of mobile phones according to the text?
A. They make it easy to travel alone. B. They are quite cheap.
C. They keep us connected at all times. D. They create new ideas.
10. What does the author want to show by mentioning online bullying?
A. The serious health risk. B. The danger of social media.
C. The mistakes students make. D. The false news on the Internet.
11. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Other harm prevention measures. B. The reason why we take action.
C. Parents’doubts about social media. D. The role the Internet can play.
D
The monarch butterfly (帝王蝶) population has dropped to its second-lowest number on record in Mexican forests this winter. The forests are the insects’ (昆虫) winter home. Their population is now worrisome as the butterfly group is already considered at risk of disappearance.
Mexico’s government and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) recently made public the findings of their yearly joint study on the butterflies. The research shows that the monarch butterfly presence has dropped to less than a hectare of forest area. In the mid-1990s, monarch butterflies could be found on around 18 hectares of the forest.
The findings show an almost 60 percent drop in the monarch butterfly population compared to last year’s study. It is also the second-lowest population finding since the first study took place more than thirty years ago.
Biologists believe the serious situation is caused by the higher-than-usual temperatures and dry conditions in the northwestern US where the butterfly reproduces. The weather conditions have an influence on the growth of milkweed the plant where the butterflies lay their eggs. When the young arrive, milkweed is their food for a time.
In one of the planet’s famous wildlife migrations (迁徙), the butterflies travel south as far as 4,500 kilometers from places as far north as Canada. They spend the winter in warmer Mexico, where millions of the insects stay in trees that protect them from the rain and cold.
Monarch butterfly populations change year to year. As recently as 2021, the same study showed a 35% increase to cover around 2.8 hectares. Scientists called for more action to help the insects. Such calls included the need to use less herbicides that may present a danger to milkweed and the need to protect forests. “We can’t lower our guard,” said Jorge Rickards, head of WWF’s Mexico office.
12. How does hot weather influence the monarch butterflies?
A. They fly to as far as Canada. B. They likely have less to eat.
C. They stop living in tall trees. D. They have to feed more babies.
13. We can know that Mexican forests in winter ________.
A. are free from rain B. are full of tourists
C. are rich in wildlife D. are often very cold
14. What do scientists suggest about monarch butterflies?
A. Taking more steps to protect them. B. Stopping them eating more leaves.
C. Studying them as much as possible. D. Checking their number quickly.
15 Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. A New-found Insect in Mexican Forests
B. The Purpose of the World Wildlife Fund
C. The Secret of Monarch Butterflies’ Travel
D. A Big Fall in Monarch Butterfly Population

Many studies say that people who know two languages have better focus, planning skills, and the ability to adjust to new information. Some even suggest they may develop serious memory problems in old age about four years later than others. ____16____ Therefore, experts are not sure if this effect is real — and if it is, what exactly causes it.
One might assume these benefits belong only to those who learn a second language from childhood. Actually, it’s never too late to start. A 2019 study found that learning a new language as an adult doesn’t greatly improve thinking skills, but it can slow normal mental decline that comes with age. ____17____
The biggest gains are seen in those who use two languages almost every day for many years. Just taking a language class in college isn’t enough. ____18____ For example, professional interpreters can switch faster between tasks than people who know only one language, showing stronger mental control.
But some results are hard to trust. People who speak two languages often have different backgrounds, like better education or richer family life. ____19____ Interestingly, in poor areas with little schooling, those who speak two languages often show the clearest mental benefits — perhaps because using two languages gives their brain extra training.
Age also matters. Young children who know two languages may think more quickly at first, though their classmates may catch up later. In older adults, knowing two languages seems to offer protection. ____20____ And even if there’s no brain boost, being able to talk to more people is a great reason to learn a new language.
A. Switching between languages often may be especially helpful.
B. But some studies have failed to show the same results.
C. This may be because they use languages regularly over time.
D These differences make it hard to tell if language alone is the cause.
E. All children gain the same advantages from language learning.
F. One expert compares it to stacking slices of cheese for better protection.
G. Language learning works best only for teenagers.

D 9. C 10. B 11. A

The weather conditions have an influence on the growth of milkweed, the plant where the butterflies lay their eggs.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. A New-found Insect in Mexican Forests
B. The Purpose of the World Wildlife Fund
C. The Secret of Monarch Butterflies’ Travel
D. A Big Fall in Monarch Butterfly Population
B 13. C 14. A 15. D

The weather conditions have an influence on the growth of milkweed, the plant where the butterflies lay their eggs. When the young arrive, milkweed is their food for a time.
根据第五段中的“They spend the winter in warmer Mexico, where millions of the insects stay in trees that protect them from the rain and cold. (它们在温暖的墨西哥过冬,在那里数以百万计的昆虫呆在树上,保护它们免受雨水和寒冷。)”可知,冬日的墨西哥森林生机盎然。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Scientists called for more action to help the insects. Such calls included the need to use less herbicides that may present a danger to milkweed and the need to protect forests. (科学家们呼吁采取更多行动来帮助昆虫。这些呼吁包括需要减少使用可能对马利筋构成危险的除草剂,以及需要保护森林。)”可知,科学家建议采取更多措施保护帝王蝶。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“The monarch butterfly (帝王蝶) population has dropped to its second-lowest number on record in Mexican forests this winter. (今年冬天,在墨西哥的森林里,帝王蝶的数量已经下降到有记录以来的第二低水平。)”和第二段中的“Mexico’s government and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) recently made public the findings of their yearly joint study on the butterflies. (墨西哥政府和世界自然基金会(WWF)最近公布了他们对蝴蝶的年度联合研究结果。研究表明,帝王蝶的存在已经下降到不到一公顷的森林面积。)”可知,本文主要介绍了一项科研结果——墨西哥政府和世界自然基金会共同开展的一项研究发现帝王蝶数量急剧下降。最佳标题为“A Big Fall in Monarch Butterfly Population (帝王蝶数量大幅下降)”。
D. These differences make it hard to tell if language alone is the cause.
E. All children gain the same advantages from language learning.
F. One expert compares it to stacking slices of cheese for better protection.
G. Language learning works best only for teenagers.
B 17. C 18. A 19. D 20. F

根据前文“Many studies say that people who know two languages have better focus, planning skills, and the ability to adjust to new information. Some even suggest they may develop serious memory problems in old age about four years later than others.(许多研究表明,会两种语言的人专注力、规划能力和适应新信息的能力更强。有些人甚至认为,他们在老年时出现严重记忆问题的时间可能比其他人晚大约四年。)”和后文“Therefore, experts are not sure if this effect is real — and if it is, what exactly causes it.(因此,专家们不确定这种效果是否真实存在——如果存在,确切原因又是什么。)”可知,空格处应体现研究结论的矛盾性,B选项“But some studies have failed to show the same results.(但有些研究未能得出相同的结果。)”
根据前文“A 2019 study found that learning a new language as an adult doesn’t greatly improve thinking skills, but it can slow normal mental decline that comes with age.(2019年的一项研究发现,成年人学习一门新语言并不会大幅提高思维能力,但它可以减缓随年龄增长而出现的正常智力衰退。)”可知,空格处应解释成年人学习语言能减缓智力衰退的原因,C选项“This may be because they use languages regularly over time.(这可能是因为他们长期定期使用语言。)”
根据前文“The biggest gains are seen in those who use two languages almost every day for many years. Just taking a language class in college isn’t enough.(最大的收获来自那些多年来几乎每天使用两种语言的人。仅仅在大学里上一门语言课是不够的。)”和后文“For example, professional interpreters can switch faster between tasks than people who know only one language, showing stronger mental control.(例如,专业口译员在不同任务间的切换速度比只懂一种语言的人更快,表现出更强的心智控制力。)”可知,空格处应强调频繁使用两种语言的作用,A选项“Switching between languages often may be especially helpful.(经常在两种语言之间切换可能特别有帮助。)” 故选A项。
根据前文“But some results are hard to trust. People who speak two languages often have different backgrounds, like better education or richer family life.(但有些结果难以令人信服。会说两种语言的人通常有不同的背景,比如更好的教育或更丰富的家庭生活。)”可知,空格处应说明这些背景差异对研究结果的影响,D选项“These differences make it hard to tell if language alone is the cause.(这些差异使得很难判断是否只有语言是(产生益处的)原因。)”
根据前文“In older adults, knowing two languages seems to offer protection.(对于老年人来说,会两种语言似乎能提供保护。)”可知,空格处应进一步形象化“保护”的含义,F选项“One expert compares it to stacking slices of cheese for better protection.(一位专家将其比作堆叠奶酪片以获得更好的保护。)”
