Seeing his predicament (困境), the vendor, a kind-hearted man with a warm smile, handed him a newspaper. “Take it,” he said, “it’s on me.” Gates hesitated, but the vendor insisted, “Consider it a gift. It won’t hurt me.”
Months later, Gates found himself at the same airport. Once again, he had no money. Surprisingly, the same vendor was there, and again he offered Gates a free newspaper. Gates tried to refuse, explaining he still had no money, but the vendor wouldn’t hear of it. “I’m giving it from my profits (收益),” he said. “It’s my pleasure.”
Years passed, and Gates became a wealthy and successful person. One day, he remembered the vendor’s generosity and felt a deep desire to repay the kindness. He spent a month and a half finding out the vendor.

Have you ever felt sleepy and unable to think clearly in a crowded classroom? Have you ever thought of the reason why you have such a feeling? As a matter of fact, the problem is caused by what we breathe out ourselves-carbon dioxide, or CO2.
There are rules about how much fresh air we need in buildings to keep us healthy. When there isn’t enough new air coming in to push the old air out, pollutants (污染物) build up. One of these pollutants is CO2, which increases every time we breathe out.
The truth is that CO2 has always been considered harmless. After all, how harmful could it be since it comes out of our own body? But this view changed when an American scientist named William Fisk happened to watch an experiment by Hungarian scientists six years ago. Their findings showed that people have difficulty doing paperwork when CO2 levels are high.
Fisk and his team repeated the experiment at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in California, US. They asked students to participate over three different periods. During each period, there were different CO2 levels. Students had to take part in role-playing games on a computer: They were told they were managers and the organization they were running was having some problems. Each student was then graded on how well they dealt with these problems.
Like the experiment from six years before, the results showed that students were more likely to make careful, smart decisions with less CO2 in the air. Their ability was reduced when the CO2 in the room rose, Science News reported. Carbon dioxide in crowded classrooms can cause sleepiness and unclear thinking. High CO2 levels affect students’ decision-making. What’s worse, CO2 can do harm without us even realizing it.
This problem is especially serious for schools because there are lots of people in classrooms for long hours every day. Students breathe out CO2 continuously and it accumulates (积累) when fresh air supply is not enough. So it is important that rooms are well-aired. US scientists recently surveyed 100 California classrooms. “We found a clear relationship between higher CO2 level and increased absences among the kids for illness,” said Mark Mendell, a member of the research team.
27.Why do pollutants build up in the building according to the passage?
A.Because people breathe out CO2 and there’s not enough new air.
B.Because outside pollutants get into the building from windows.
C.Because cleaning products give out pollutants in the building.
D.Because computers in the building make lots of pollutants.
28.What can we learn from Fisk and his team’s experiment?
A.Students bad the same reaction with different levels of CO2.
B.Low levels of CO2 could make students do things carelessly.
C.Students felt uncomfortable when the level of CO2 increased.
D.High levels of CO2 reduced the students’ ability to make decisions.
29.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.The different opinions on classroom CO2. B.The hidden bad effects of classroom CO2.
C.The main possible cause of classroom CO2. D.The reasons for classroom production of CO2.
【答案】27.A 28.D 29.B
【导语】本文主要介绍了教室里的二氧化碳对学生的负面影响,研究发现过量的二氧化碳会影响人的思维带来身体不适。
27.细节理解题。根据“When there isn’t enough new air coming in to push the old air out, pollutants (污染物) build up. One of these pollutants is CO2, which increases every time we breathe out.”可知,当没有足够的新空气进入时,污染物就会积聚起来。故选A。
28.细节理解题。根据“Their ability was reduced when the CO2 in the room rose,”及“High CO2 levels affect students’ decision-making.”可知,高浓度的二氧化碳降低了学生的决策能力。故选D。

In today’s high-speed world, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily tasks and forget about those that bring us joy. As you create your goals for 2025, consider adding one to experience more flow. Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has called flow “the secret to happiness”. Flow is a state of positive experience which is characterized by great joy that makes a life worth living. Each of us can bring it into our everyday lives.
the book named Flow
When people feel flow, they are in a state of strong focus. Their thoughts center on an experience rather than on themselves. They lose a sense of time and feel as if their actions and awareness become one. Flow appears when both the task’s challenge and skill level are high. People will not feel flow when they are doing the dishes. Csikszentmihalyi’s research in the 1970s was aimed at people doing tasks they enjoyed. He studied swimmers, music composers, dancers, mountain climbers and other athletes. He found out that as long as that task’s challenge is high, and so are your skills, you should be able to achieve flow.
Flow is seen as “the secret to happiness”. For one thing, the experience can help people work towards their long-term goals. Research shows that taking a break to feel flow can improve one’s self-control, goal-achieving and well-being. A recent study also shows that flow could make people resilient in the face of difficulty. Part of this is because flow can help redirect thoughts away from something stressful to something enjoyable. In fact, studies have shown that experiencing flow can help guard against sadness and burnout.
What is going on in the brain during flow? Studies show that the experience is connected with increasing excitement in brain parts related to feeling satisfied. This may be one reason why flow feels so enjoyable and why people are so focused on tasks that make them feel flow. Research also shows that when people are in “flow”, there’s less activity in brain parts that deal with self-focus and negative thoughts. This may help explain why feeling flow can help distract (转移) people from worry. However, the above-mentioned studies were related, not causal (随意的). Further study of this connection is of great importance.
30.According to the passage, flow is most likely to appear when someone is ________.
A.attending a concert of his favorite singer B.playing chess against a strong competitor
C.doing daily chores for his family members D.sharing his traveling experience with friends

A.turn difficult tasks into easier ones B.draw people away from bad thoughts

32.What does the word “resilient” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Easily influenced. B.Achieve a great improvement.
C.Completely fail. D.Able to become strong again.
33.Which would be the best title for the passage?
A.When does the state of “flow” appear? B.What happens in our brain during “flow”?

The Power of Hope
Have you noticed the mornings are slowly getting lighter? Being hopeful that spring is around the corner and warmer, brighter days are ahead is a powerful feeling. This is because hope gives us the strength to be positive, even when things don’t go our way.
Hope is a positive feeling that things will get better. It’s more than just wishful thinking; hope means taking action and believing you have the power to achieve your goals. “When I’m hopeful, it makes me see the brightness in myself,” says Jonah, aged eight, “It’s good to be hopeful because it gives you a chance to be happy about things.” Charles Snyder, a psychologist (an expert in how we think) studied hopeful thinking and said it has three main parts: having a goal, thinking up different ways to achieve it and believing in yourself even when things go wrong.
Snyder called hope a “rainbow of the mind,” because it “lifts our spirits and makes us think of what is possible.” Being hopeful about something, like trying out a new sport or hobby, takes courage because you’re taking a step into the unknown. This helps you work out what’s important to you, as well as making you more confident. Studies show that being hopeful also helps you learn better at school, build strong friendships and feel less stressed.
Hope is a skill you can learn. Hope expert David Feldman suggests starting by working towards a goal that’s important to you, then thinking up different ways to achieve it. So if you hope to be a chef one day, for example, aim to learn one new recipe a week. Staying focused on your goal takes energy, so eat healthily and get plenty of sleep. If you start to feel hopeless, get inspired by people who have already succeeded or tell someone who supports you so they can help you improve. Finally, make use of your imagination and picture yourself achieving your goal. Picturing success in the future is hope in action.

The Truly Rich Man
Gates lived in New York. Though he was not rich or famous, he was ambitious and determined. One day, as he hurried through the airport, he realized he wanted a newspaper to pass the time. Getting to a vendor, he fumbled through his pockets but found he had no money.
Gates asked with a broad smile. “Do you remember me?”
The vendor looked at him closely and replied, “Yes, you’re Gates. I gave you newspapers for free twice.”
Gates nodded. “I want to return the favor. Tell me what you wish for in life, and I will fulfill it.”
The vendor looked at Gates thoughtfully and said, “Sir, how can your help compare to mine? I helped you when I was a poor newspaper vendor. You are offering help now that you are the richest man in the world. How can your help match mine?”

C

34.How many main parts does hopeful thinking have?
35.Why was hope called a “rainbow of the mind”?
36.How do you get enough energy to stay focused on your goal?
37.Who do you think is always positive around you? Why? (Give at least two reasons.)
