“Hi, Brody!” Abby calls out when she walks into the classroom. Brody and other dogs run happily towards her. Abby is a student in New York and the dogs are part of the Mutt-i-grees curriculum (课程). The Mutt-i-grees curriculum brings dogs to classrooms to teach students some important lessons. It started in 2010 and more than 4,000 schools have used it.
“Dogs make kids feel better about themselves and school,” says one of Abby’s teachers, “Some dogs came from animal shelters (收容所) and now live here happily. They are everyone’s friends.” Abby and her classmates take good care of the dogs. They feed the dogs and play with them every day. These help the students learn teamwork and kindness, making school a better place for everyone.
The dogs can also help students learn more about emotions (情绪). Abby shares her thoughts, “When Brody wags the tail, we know he’s happy. But when he lies down with his ears back, it might mean he is nervous.” By watching how dogs show feelings, students learn to connect people’s actions (行为) with their emotions. “If we see someone looking sad, we can help them. It makes our friendships stronger.” Abby says.
