B Jim Denevan is an amazing artist whose work is admired by all, but owned by none---that’s because all of Jim's art is created on an unusual canvas(画布)---the soft sand. He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by the sea or a storm and that is just the way he likes it. Denevan discovered his artistic talents about ten years ago, when he was wandering aimlessly on the beach with a stick. He ended up drawing a 12-foot-long fish. Since then,Jim has traveled over 1, 800 miles while creating over 600 pieces of sand art. Over the years, his drawings have become bigger, but the tools he uses haven't changed---all he needs is a stick, a garden rake (耙子) and most importantly, his lively imagination! Just like any good artist, Jim is quite particular about the “quality” of his canvas, sometimes walking for miles, looking for perfect sand. His latest piece of work, which is also the world's largest freelance (自由职业的) drawing, was created in the desert sand of Nevada. It took Jim three trips, eight days and over 100 miles of walking to create this 3-mile work of art. It took the storm just one night to destroy it! However, Jim says he actually enjoys watching the waves or rain wash his paintings away. Jim's art has become very popular over the years and was even the topic of a documentary named “Sandman” in 2015. Jim Denevan is not just about art in the sand-he is also an excellent chef (厨师) and founder of an organization called “Outstanding in the Field”, whose motto is to celebrate food at its source. Accordingly, group dining events are held outdoors on farms, with the diners being treated to a delicious meal. The events, which are held in different farms throughout America, are always sold out the minute the schedule is announced. 41. What do we know about Denevan? A. He used to be a chef. B. He has a talent for creating sand art. C. He puts his work on show regularly. D. He showed artistic talents at a very young age. 42 It can be learned from the passage that__________ A. Denevan walks a lot to complete his work B. it is not hard for Denevan to find suitable sand to draw on C. it usually takes long for the storm to destroy Denevan's work. D Denevan is very particular about his drawing tools 43. What does Denevan enjoy about his job according to the passage? A. Walking a long distance. B. Waiting for the storm to come C. Looking for a suitable canvas. D. Watching his work being destroyed by nature. 44 Which of the following can best describe Denevan? A. Generous. B. Kind-hearted. C. Imaginative. D. Traditional. 45. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Denevan loses his interest in art soon. B. Denevan is also popular as a chef. C. Being a happy chef is Denevan's final goal in life. D. Denevan’s fame helps him with his chef job. C A team of scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has developed an elephant skin-inspired wall tile (墙砖) made from mycelium (菌丝体). These wall tiles combine the mycelium with natural waste to create a biomaterial that offers an energy-free solution for cooling buildings. “With the construction industry contributing nearly 40% of energy-related pollution globally, sustainable insulation materials (可持续的隔热材料) are a growing trend. They are increasingly applied to building walls to improve energy effectiveness, but these are mostly man-made and come with environmental impacts throughout their life cycle,” said Le Ferrand Hortense, who led the study and stressed the significance of this development. The researchers designed the tile’s surface to look like elephant skin, which is naturally structured with wrinkles to help it survive heat waves. “Elephants are large animals that live in hot and sometimes wet climates. To resist heat, elephants have developed a skin that is heavily wrinkled, which helps them retain more water and cools the animal as the water dries up,” Le Ferrand explained. To create the tiles, researchers grow the mycelium on natural waste such as bamboo pieces and oats. The mixture was packed into six-sided patterns made to look like elephant skin, using computational modeling. The tiles were grown in darkness for two weeks, then removed from the pattern, and allowed to grow further before being dried at 48℃ for three days. During the following tests, tiles were placed on a 100℃ hot plate for 15 minutes. The temperature of the elephant skin-like mycelium tile increased by 5.01℃ per minute, while the flat tile heated up at a rate of 5.85℃ per minute. Besides, the cooling effect of the new tiles increased a lot under rain conditions. Furthermore, the NTU team is working on increasing the production of these mycelium tiles and testing them on real buildings. “However, challenges remain in broadening their use, particularly the time required for mycelium growth, which takes three to four weeks. We are actively addressing this issue, and we hope these tiles will make a difference in the construction industry,” Le Ferrand said. 46. What makes the elephant skin-inspired wall tile stand out? A. Its long-lasting service time. B. Its similarity to mycelium structures. C. Its fully bio-based eco-friendliness. D. Its adaptability to weather changes. 47. What does the underlined word “retain” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Generate. B. Hold. C. Remove. D. Clean. 48. What can we learn about the tile-making process? A. It uses sunlight to the fullest. B. It demands sufficient water. C. It shows high productivity. D. It turns waste into wealth. 49. What did the test data imply about the elephant skin-inspired tile? A. It better slows the heat flow. B. It needs little maintenance. C. It exhibits unreliable performance. D. It proves excellent at keeping heat. 50. In the future, the researchers will_________. A. look for better building material B. reduce the time cost of the tiles C. use more mycelium varieties D. test tiles on real buildings D Electronic textiles (纺织品), also called E-textiles or smart textiles, are fabrics (织物) with electronic components built into them. According to the product descriptions, these electronic components can measure environmental factors such as temperature, light, or sound, as well as the health conditions of the wearer. Active smart textiles can respond to changes in their surroundings, for instance by changing colors or shape or giving signals. The use of smart textiles ranges hugely from fashion to function. For example, athletes can use e-textiles when training to check their health conditions, helping them measure performance and reduce the risk of injuries. In the workplace, smart textiles can detect stress, tiredness, and promote safety, while also helping emergency workers respond to issues more quickly in risky workplace environments. However, according to Technology Networks, there is a penumbra to electronic textiles. These smart textiles contain tiny batteries and metal parts, which may pose environmental risks due to possible pollution. To address this issue, researchers from the University of Southampton and UWE Bristol designed SWEET, which stands for Smart, Wearable, and Eco-Friendly Electronic Textiles. These e-textiles are specially designed to be good for the planet and able to break down naturally over time. SWEET, according to the researchers, is designed from eco-friendly materials. Its base fabric is formed from a natural and biodegradable (可生物降解的) textile taken from plants. The electronic components are skillfully made from graphene (石墨烯), a carbon known for being a strong conductor. The researchers integrated graphene into the textile using a printing method that is significantly less wasteful than traditional methods. To test how green SWEET is, the researchers put it in the soil. After several months, half the fabric had broken down, showing greater biodegradability than other electronic clothing. Besides, SWEET proved just as efficient and effective as traditional electronic textiles. It successfully checked the heart rate of volunteers, strengthening its value for healthcare applications. Researcher Dr. Shaila Afroij praised SWEET’s possible use in healthcare, stating, “Achieving reliable, industry-standard monitoring with eco-friendly materials is a major achievement. It shows that being eco-friendly doesn’t mean giving up on performance, especially in important areas like healthcare.” 51. What is the main function of smart textiles? A. Helping update clothing material. B. Making clothes more fashionable. C. Monitoring internal and external conditions. D. Checking and improving wearers’ emotions. 52. What do the examples in paragraph 2 aim to show about e-textiles? A. Their limited customers. B. Their wide application. C. Their original purpose. D. Their complex technology. 53. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “penumbra” in paragraph 3? A. Dark side. B. Chain reaction. C. Cultural identity. D. Theoretical basis. 54. What can be known about SWEET from its production process? A. Its materials are sourced from rare elements. B. Its production is efficient and speedy. C. It breaks down with human aid. D. It has a low carbon footprint. 55. What does Dr. Shaila’s statement imply? A. Performance is often overvalued. B. Performance and eco-friendliness can coexist. C. SWEET has become a new industry standard. D. The healthcare field has strict material requirements. 第Ⅱ卷(共两部分;满分35分) 第一节 阅读表达(阅读短文,回答以下五个问题。每小题2分。满分10分) 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 An 89-year-old man has reached a goal he spent 20 years working toward. He earned his doctor degree and became a physicist. Steiner values this degree because it is what he always wanted — and because he overcame health problems that could have interfered with his studies. As a young person in Vienna, Austria, Steiner wanted to become a physicist after reading about Albert Einstein and Max Planck. But after World War Ⅱ, his mother advised him that studying medicine would be a better choice. He earned his medical degree from the University of Vienna in 1955 and moved to the United States soon after. In the U.S., he had a successful career studying blood, became a full professor and led the hematology (血液学) department at Brown’s medical school from 1985 to 1994. He helped establish a research program in hematology and directed that program until he retired from medicine in 2000. Steiner found medical research pleasing, but it was not quite the same as his interest in physics. “It was something like a wish that was never fulilled, that always stuck in the back of my head,” he said. “Once I’m finished with medicine, I really don’t want to spend my life just sitting around and maybe doing a little golfing or doing something like that. I wanted to keep active. At age 70, he started taking undergraduate classes at Brown University. He was planning to just take a few classes that interested him. But by 2007, he had earned enough credits to join the doctoral program. Physics professor Brad Marston soon realized how serious Steiner was about the subject and how hard he worked. “He already had a scientific way of thinking that younger students have to develop,” Marston said. “One thing that’s really true about Manfred is he perseveres.” After the university published a story about Steiner on its website, people across the U.S. contacted him to ask for advice on how to go after their dreams later in life. He said his advice is: Do what you love to do. 56 Why does Steiner attach great importance to this degree? (no more than 10 words) 57. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? (no more than 7 words) 58. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 5 mean? (no more than 7 words) 59. What is Marston’s comment on Steiner after he joined the doctoral program? (no more than 10 words) 60. B. A. look for better building material B. reduce the time cost of the tiles C. use more mycelium varieties D. test tiles on real buildings 【答案】46. C 47. B 48. D 49. A 50. We are actively addressing this issue, and we hope these tiles will make a difference in the construction industry,’ Le Ferrand said.(Le Ferrand说:‘然而,在扩大它们的使用范围方面仍存在挑战,尤其是菌丝体生长所需的时间,这一过程需要三到四周。我们正在积极解决这个问题,并且我们希望这些墙砖能在建筑行业中产生影响。’)”可知,目前菌丝体生长耗时久是主要挑战,研究人员未来会着手解决这一问题,即降低墙砖的时间成本。故选B。 D Electronic textiles (纺织品), also called E-textiles or smart textiles, are fabrics (织物) with electronic components built into them. For example athletes can use e-textiles when training to check their health conditions, helping them measure performance and reduce the risk of injuries. 【答案】51. C 52. B 53. A 54. D 55. 56. Why does Steiner attach great importance to this degree? (no more than 10 words) 57. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? (no more than 7 words) 58. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 5 mean? (no more than 7 words) 59. What is Marston’s comment on Steiner after he joined the doctoral program? (no more than 10 words) 60. What do you think of Steiner? Please explain. (no more than 20 words) 【答案】56. Because he longed for it and overcame serious health problems./He worked hard toward it and overcame serious health problems. /Because he earned what he wanted and overcame health problems. 57.
