For the people of Dahuangba village in Yunnan, wild Asian elephants were once a big problem. Living near the forest where elephants are, villagers often saw their crops (庄稼) eaten by these large animals. Some even faced scary moments, like being trapped in cars as elephants shook them. While it might be fun for the elephants, it was frightening for the locals.
Because of this, many villagers used to dislike the elephants. However, things are now changing. New technologies, such as early warning apps that track the elephants, and a special team paying attention to their movements, are helping. Signs are also placed on roads to warn people when elephants are nearby. These signs tell people to stay away, not pass, not take photos, and never try to scare the elephants.
Villager Tao Daqiang said the elephants often come to the farmland, especially during fall, because they know where the best food is. This problem is made worse because the village is close to the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve (保护区), a large forest and one of the elephants’ main homes.
Tao explained that almost everyone in the village has encountered (遇见) the elephants at some point. He believes the best way to live peacefully with them is for people and elephants to avoid each other as much as possible. After all, no encounter with a wild elephant is ever easy.
9. Why were wild Asian elephants once a big problem for people of Dahuangba?

C. People moving the village away. D. Bringing enough food to elephants.

My husband built a small two-floor house for our Little Free Library. It looked exactly like our own house. Both of us love reading, so instead of taking boxes of books to a used book sale, we now place them in this little library near the street to share them with others.
Over the past 15 years, thousands of books have been shared through our little library. Sometimes, people also leave DVDs and CDs. Our library is on a busy street near a subway station, so many people pass by every day.
The library has become a special part of our neighborhood. One man often takes books from our library to share with people at a nearby old people’s home. Other people have left us cards, chocolates, and even a drawing from a local artist to show their thanks.
The books in our library show the diversity of our city. Most books are in English, but we also often see Arabic, French, and Russian books. I even keep some books in languages I don’t understand because I enjoy collecting different ones. Interestingly, the library hasn’t helped us reduce the number of books in our home—we now have more books than ever!
Some people think Little Free Libraries compete with bookstores. But for us, this hasn’t been true. We still buy books and use the bookstores often. The difference is our Little Free Library has connected us to book lovers and helped us share the joy of reading in our busy neighborhood.
13. What is the Little Free Library according to the text?
A. A small house for sharing books. B. The writer’s new house to live in.
C. A big market to read and sell books. D. A library for old people in the city.
14. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Things readers forget to take away.
B. Ways to pay for the books in the library.
C. People’s love for the special library.
D. The writer’s opinion on local people.
15. What is the meaning of the underlined word “diversity” in the text?
A. Things that are almost the same. B. Experiences from the past.
C. Something that looks very nice. D. Many kinds of cultures or ideas.
16. What is probably the writer’s attitude (态度) towards bookstores?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Disappointed. D. Unclear.

The TV play To the Wonder took the country by storm. Many people watched it. They were amazed at the natural beauty of Altay, Xinjiang and the special traditions of the people there. Last month, I took a trip to Altay, and I can surely say that it is as wonderful as it is on TV.
When I got off the plane and set foot in Altay, I was shocked by its beauty. The blue water of the lake and the white clouds in the sky made me wonder if it was a fairyland. As I looked across the grasslands, the snow-covered mountains suddenly said hello to me. Oh, it was actually in summer. Then, groups of cows and sheep caught my attention. It seemed as if these lovely animals had stepped out of a painting. People drove them, living nicely with nature. Their way of life showed that they believed a good environment is their best treasure.
Visiting Altay was a real eye-opener for me. During my stay with a Hui family, they made roast (烤制的;烘烤的) baozi. When Kazakh neighbors came over, we shared the delicious baozi. Another day, I experienced a wedding. The groom (新郎) was Mongol, and the bride (新娘) was Sibe. Their wedding mixed traditions from both cultures. The whole village came to celebrate. I knew then that national unity (团结) doesn’t simply exist there, but that it’s openly celebrated.
Altay, my wonder, can be yours too. If you can, why not go on a trip to Altay with your family?

My husband built a small two-floor house for our Little Free Library. It looked exactly like our own house. Both of us love reading so instead of taking boxes of books to a used book sale, we now place them in this little library near the street to share them with others.
