Are Food Miles Really Important?
A popular narrative with food is simple: “eating local” is one of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint. It seems quite reasonable intuitively, but how reliable is it? Well, it is indeed true that the food sector uses a lot of energy, contributing 20 to 30 percent of all greenhouse gases. But how much of this is directly connected to moving food around the globe from farm to fork? Perhaps less than you might think.
In one of the most comprehensive studies, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania have reported that the shipment of food around the world only contributes around 4 percent of global carbon emissions. The report is in line with much research from around the world, which suggests that transportation only generates between 4 to 6 percent of the food system’s carbon footprint. Many studies revealed that most emissions were actually generated from other aspects of food production, such as agriculture, processing and cooking. In fact, it is the end consumer that used by far the most energy. Transport? The least.
One UK government study found that tomatoes trucked hundreds of kilometers from sunny Spain had a carbon footprint that was less than a third of that of those grown in heated glasshouses in chilly UK. In contrast to the simple “local=more eco-friendly” narrative, the authors therefore concluded that: “A single indicator based on total food kilometers travelled would not be a valid indicator of sustainability.”
When it comes to our carbon footprint, transport methods vary enormously too. For example, as air freight produces more than 75 times more emissions than sea freight, shipping food to the UK all the way from South-East Asia would involve far less carbon than the same product popped on a short flight from Italy. In this context, the emissions that come from shipping food by air freight one mile, is equal to the emissions from shipping food for more than 9 miles by road, and 75 miles by sea, making the concept of distance as a direct indicator of emissions highly problematic.
So is eating local really a better option? It depends. There are many reasons why you might be choosing to do so, aside from environmental concerns. Indeed, there are many other ways to measure environmental impact other than carbon emissions. But when we look at the evidence, only one thing is clear: food miles alone really aren’t a good proxy(指标)for sustainability. In fact, sometimes they are incredibly misleading. While we can’t disregard them entirely, we should view them in the context of a suite of other factors, recognizing that they often make up a tiny fraction of food’s carbon impact.
30. The data mentioned in the second paragraph are used to ______ .
A. illustrate that “food miles” has nothing to do with carbon emissions
B. encourage readers to consume imported food without guilt
C. prove that blaming carbon emissions on “food miles” only is unwise
D. warn readers that food transport is to blame for global warming
31 The author is likely to agree that _______ .
A. eating local actually doesn’t help cut down on the carbon footprint of food
B. cutting transport distance always helps to cut down on food’s carbon footprint
C. food transport has more to do with carbon emissions than food processing does
D. food’s carbon footprint depends both on the distance and the method of transport
32. What’s the author’s attitude towards “food miles” as an indicator for sustainability?
A. neutral B. serious C. opposing D. supportive
Though researchers have long known that adults build unconscious (无意识的) preferences over a lifetime of making choices between things that are essentially the same, the new finding that even babies engage in this phenomenon demonstrates that this way of justifying choice is intuitive (凭直觉的) and somehow fundamental to the human experience.
“The act of making a choice changes how we feel about our options,” said Alex Silver, a Johns Hopkins researcher. “Even infants who are really just at the start of making choices for themselves have this preference.”
The findings are published today in the journal Psychological Science. People assume they choose things that they like. But research suggests that’s sometimes backwards: we like things because we choose them. And, we dislike things that we don’t choose. “Adults make these inferences unconsciously,” said co-author Lisa Feigenson, a Johns Hopkins scientist in child development. “We justify our choice after the fact.”
This makes sense for adults in a consumer culture who must make random choices every day, between everything from toothpaste brands to styles of jeans. The question was when exactly people start doing this. So they turned to babies, who don’t get many choices so, as Feigenson puts it, are “a perfect window into the origin of this tendency.”
The team brought 10-to 20-month-old babies into the lab and gave them a choice of objects to play with; two equally bright and colorful soft blocks. They set them far apart, so the babies had to crawl to one or the other — a random choice. After the baby chose one of the toys, the researchers took it away and came back with a new option. The babies could then pick from the toy they didn’t play with the first time, or a brand new toy. Their choices showed they “dis-prefer the unchosen object.”
To continue studying the evolution of choice in babies the lab will next look at the idea of “choice overload.” For adults, choice is good, but too many choices can be a problem, so the lab will try to determine if that is also true for babies.
33. What is people’s assumption about the act of making choices?
A. They like what they choose.
B. They choose what they like.
C. They base choices on the fact.
D. They make choices thoughtfully.
34. Why were babies selected as subjects for the study?
A. To help them make better choices.
B. To guide them to perceive the world.
C. To track the root of making random choices.
D. To deepen the understanding of a consumer culture.
35. What does the study on the babies show?
A. They like novel objects.
B. Their choices are mostly based on colors.
C. Their random choices become preferences.
D. They are unable to make choices for themselves.
36. What will the following study focus on?
A. The law of “choice overload”.
B. The problem of adults’ many choices.
C. Why too many choices can influence adults.
D. Whether babies are troubled with many choices.
NASA has a new job listing, and it’s no joke. The US space agency is looking for a “joker” to join their planned mission to Mars.
A mission to Mars is no laughing matter. On average, the red planet is 140 million miles (225 million kilometers) away from Earth. A trip there would take around eight months in a small spacecraft. And Mars has a communications delay of 20 minutes. This means that astronauts will have to wait 20 minutes for a reply, when an emergency happens.
“When you’re living with others in a confined space for a long period of time, such as on a mission to Mars, problems are likely to occur,” Jeffrey Johnson, a scientist at the University of Florida, told the Guardian.
This is probably why NASA wants an astronaut with a sense of humor. “These are people that have the ability to pull everyone together,” Johnson said.
In stressful situations, perhaps humor is a way to know we aren’t alone. By laughing together, we share our stress. Then we can focus on our jobs instead of just worrying.
There are other examples of team “clowns”. One example is the journey to the South Pole led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. It was a difficult journey, full of danger. Adolf Lindstrom, a cook at Amundsen’s team, was a “clown”. He made people laugh through the whole journey. Amundsen later wrote that Lindstrom was the most valuable member of the team.
But if you’re hoping that your favorite TV comedian will fly to Mars, that probably won’t happen.
“Being funny won’t be enough to land somebody the job,” Johnson said. “They also need to be an excellent scientist and engineer.”
Besides, they must be in top physical condition.
37. What is NASA’s new job listing?
A. A funny engineer. B. A talented clown.
C. A good cook. D. A popular comedian.
38. What does “a confined space” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. A crowded space. B. An empty space.
C. An open space. D. A small space.
39. How does the author think humor can help astronauts?
A. It can stop them from feeling worried.
B. It can encourage teamwork on a mission.
C. It can help them feel less homesick.
D. It can help them know themselves better.
40. What point does the author want to make with the example of the cook?
A. What explorers eat on their journey is very important.
B. An amateur can play a more important role than a professional.
C. Humorous people can cheer people up in difficult situations.
D. A mission to Mars is more difficult than a journey to the South Pole.
41. What could be the best title of the passage?
A. Keeping the Spirits Up
B. A Mission to Mars
C. A New Job Listing of NASA
D. Humorous Astronauts in NASA

Every time my family makes special plans, they end up getting canceled due to some incidents. Every time that happens, my parents would tell us to look on the bright side and make the best of a bad situation. However, I never managed to do that until this spring.
On a sunny morning last month, my aunt Jen invited us to the annual outdoor spring celebration at her farm. Since my family hadn’t done anything different for ages, the whole family was very excited and everyone pulled his own weight to make sure everything goes as planned. In order to add more fun to this exciting trip, my little sister Indi and my little brother Tex even joined me to make an extra-special treat — cupcakes.
The picnic was intended to go from twelve to three. After double checking the car, my parents loaded books, games, picnic blanket, and a whole big pack of food into the car. The moment of our departure finally arrived as the clock struck 11. However, everything went wrong the instant we bravely drove off. First, we had to stop and wait for Tex to find his shoes. Next, as we were driving down the road, we had to go back to the house because my mom forgot her wallet. Then, about halfway to Aunt Jen’s house, we had to drive far out of our way to find a place for Indi to use the bathroom. After that, my parents decided it’d be quicker to take this one little side country road as a shortcut. But the shortcut ended up turning into a long cut! We drove forever on a winding road with wildflower field spreading endlessly out on both sides and the deep green pine trees going on and on within our sight. Spotting hundreds of birds flying in the sky, I was seized by a growing sense of desperation for I entirely had no idea when we could hit our destination.

31. The author is likely to agree that _______ .
A. eating local actually doesn’t help cut down on the carbon footprint of food
B. cutting transport distance always helps to cut down on food’s carbon footprint
C. food transport has more to do with carbon emissions than food processing does
D. food’s carbon footprint depends both on the distance and the method of transport
32. What’s the author’s attitude towards “food miles” as an indicator for sustainability?
A. neutral B. serious C. opposing D. supportive
C 31. D 32. A
根据第二段“In one of the most comprehensive studies, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania have reported that the shipment of food around the world only contributes around 4 percent of global carbon emissions. The report is in line with much research from around the world, which suggests that transportation only generates between 4 to 6 percent of the food system’s carbon footprint. ”(在一项最全面的研究中,宾夕法尼亚州卡内基梅隆大学(Carnegie Mellon University)的研究人员报告称,世界各地的食品运输只占全球碳排放量的4%左右。这份报告与世界各地的许多研究一致,这些研究表明,交通运输产生的碳足迹只占食品系统碳足迹的4%到6%。)可知,第二段提及的数据被用来证明把碳排放量归咎到食物运输上是不明智的。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“When it comes to our carbon footprint, transport methods vary enormously too. In this context, the emissions that come from shipping food by air freight one mile, is equal to the emissions from shipping food for more than 9 miles by road, and 75 miles by sea, making the concept of distance as a direct indicator of emissions highly problematic.”(谈到我们的碳足迹,运输方式也千差万别。
根据最后一段“ While we can’t disregard them entirely, we should view them in the context of a suite of other factors, recognizing that they often make up a tiny fraction of food’s carbon impact.”( 虽然我们不能完全忽视它们,但我们应该在一系列其他因素的背景下看待它们,认识到它们往往只占食品碳排放影响的一小部分。) 故选A。

To continue studying the evolution of choice in babies, the lab will next look at the idea of “choice overload.” For adults, choice is good, but too many choices can be a problem, so the lab will try to determine if that is also true for babies.
33 What is people’s assumption about the act of making choices?
B 34. C 35. C 36. D

由第一段“Though researchers have long known that adults build unconscious (无意识的) preferences over a lifetime of making choices between things that are essentially the same, the new finding that even babies engage in this phenomenon demonstrates that this way of justifying choice is intuitive (凭直觉的) and somehow fundamental to the human experience. (尽管研究人员早就知道,成年人在一生中在本质上相同的事物之间做出选择时会产生无意识的偏好,但即使是婴儿也会参与这一现象的新发现表明,这种证明选择合理性的方式是凭直觉的,而且在某种程度上是人类经验的基础)”和第三段中的“People assume they choose things that they like. (人们认为他们选择自己喜欢的东西)”可知,人们对选择行为的假设就是人们选择自己喜欢的。故选B项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。由第四段中的“So they turned to babies, who don’t get many choices so, as Feigenson puts it, are “a perfect window into the origin of this tendency.”(因此,他们转向了婴儿,婴儿没有太多选择,所以,正如费根森所说,这是“一个了解这种倾向起源的完美窗口”)”可知,选择婴儿作为研究对象是因为婴儿是追踪随机选择的根源。
由第五段“The team brought 10-to 20-month-old babies into the lab and gave them a choice of objects to play with; two equally bright and colorful soft blocks.
B 38. D 39. B 40. C 41. C
根据第一段中的“The US space agency is looking for a “joker” to join…”
根据第二段中的“A trip there would take around eight months in a small spacecraft”可知,前往火星的行程非常的漫长,而且是在一个小的宇宙飞船中。而第三段中以火星之旅为例(such as on a mission to Mars),表明长时间在“a confined space”中很容易出问题。那么,很明显,a confined space应该指的是像a small spacecraft这样的小空间。
根据第四段中的“…with a sense of humor. These are people that have the ability to pull everyone together”可知,幽默的人具备将所有的人团结在一起的能力。
根据第六段中的“It was a difficult journey, full of danger. ….He made people laugh through the whole journey…the most valuable member of the team”可知,Adolf的幽默感使队员们在整个旅程中哈哈大笑,成功地完成了艰难的旅程,所以,他被认为是最有价值的队员。
常用的例证信号词有: like/for example/for instance/such as; include/consist of 等。 例如在47题中,学生可以根据例证:such as on a mission to Mars来推测出“a confined space”的意思。

注意:

Just then, our car started making a strange noise. Obviously, there was something wrong with it and we had to pull over and call roadside service. Dad comforted us and claimed that help would arrive soon. But help did not arrive soon at all. So frustrated was I that I felt the whole world crumbled with tears streaming down my cheeks. Then came my dad’s voice. “Look on the bright side,” said dad. Our car couldn’t have picked a prettier place to break down. Mom agreed, getting out the picnic blanket and suggested walking over to that gorgeous wildflower field and have our own springtime celebration.
At first, we kids weren’t excited about the idea. We carried stuff over to the field, dragged ourselves down, and grumbled. But as we started looking around, cool things started happening. Hundreds of butterflies were dancing on the boundless wildflower field, looking like a beautiful scroll spreading out just for us. With a whooshing sound, a flock of birds rose up out of the pine trees, and flew around and around in the most amazing wavelike patterns, right over our heads! Just right there, we enjoyed our hand-made special treats, which were so delicious! It ended up one of the most amazing picnics in my life.
