Elephants are the largest land animals alive today. They usually live in family groups called herds (兽群). All of the elephants in the herd take care of each other. The leader of the herd is usually an old mother elephant. A herd may have as few as 8 or as many as 100 elephants. The other elephants follow the leader because she knows how to keep them safe from coming danger.
Elephants learn by watching and copying other elephants, and they also learn from life. Baby elephants stay with their mothers until they are fully grown at about 10 years old. Elephants can live to be 50 to 60 years old. Elephants are smart animals with good memories. In the dry season, a leader can remember where they used to find water. The herd will follow her there. She can also remember the safest place for baby elephants to cross a fast-moving river.
Elephants talk to each other with sounds. Some of the sounds are so low and deep that people are unable to hear them. Elephants hear sounds not only with their ears, but also with their feet and even trunks (象鼻). They also greet each other by touching each other’s trunks and feet. If danger appears, mothers beat their ears to call their babies to come back.
Other animals seldom attack (攻击) elephants. However, a lion might try to attack a baby elephant. If this happens, the adult elephants circle around the baby elephant. They make louder sounds and hit the ground with their trunks. The leader puts herself between the lion and the herd. She holds up her ears to make herself look even larger. Then she lowers her head and attacks the enemy quickly.

At some point you’ve probably looked at old photos of people and asked yourself, “Why did they wear that?” The people in the photo probably thought that they looked great! The truth is that nothing stays the same forever especially in the world of fashion (时尚). What we like to wear changes all the time.
A century ago many men, from businessmen to taxi drivers, wore suits (西装) to work. Even young boys regularly wore suits and ties. Women didn’t just wear skirts or dresses when they wanted to dress up. They wore them all the time!
Over time casual (休闲的) clothes took the place of formal (正式的) clothes. For example, jeans are very popular today. They were made for workers in the factories at first. They needed pants with strong fabric that didn’t tear (撕裂) easily. In 1873 tailor Davis and businessman Strauss created the pants that they called overalls (工作服) because people wore them over their clothes. Then cowboys liked wearing the jeans very much. Thanks to the Western movies of the 1930s, many people began wearing them. Today jeans and a sweatshirt (运动衫) are practically a uniform for teens around the world.
Like clothes, shoes have also changed over time. You may prefer (更喜欢) to wear sneakers (运动鞋), but in the past both men and women wore shoes with high heels. This was the fashion for nearly a century before men began wearing more practical shoes without heels.
Things change. You might think your clothes are fashionable now, but if people see a photo of you in a hundred years, they might just ask, “Why did he wear that?”

阅读短文,用英文填空或回答问题(请注意每小题的词数要求)。
