I don't think I can recall a time when I
wasn't aware of the beauty of the ocean.Grow-
ing up in Australia,I had the good fortune of
having the sea at my side. The first time I went
to Halfmoon Bay,I suddenly had the feeling of
not being able to feel the ground with my feet
anymore.
For my 10th birthday,my sister and I were
taken out to the Great Barrier Reef. There were
fish in different colours, caves and layers of cor-
al(珊瑚).They made such an impression on
58
me.When I learned that only one percent of
Australia's Coral Sea was protected,I was
shocked.Australian marine(海洋的)life is
particularly important because the reefs(暗礁)
have more marine species than any other country
on earth.But sadly,only 45%of the world's
reefs are considered healthy.
This statistic(数据)is depressing,soit's
important for us to do everything to protect
them. The hope that the Coral Sea remains a
complete ecosystem has led me to take action.
I've become involved with the Protect Our Coral
Sea activity, which aims to create the largest
marine park in the world. It would serve as a
place where the ocean's species will all have a
safe place forever.
Together,Angus and I created a little video
and we hope it will inspire people to be part of
the movement.Angus also shares many beauti-
ful childhood memories of the ocean as a young
boy,who grew up sailing, admiring the beauty of
the ocean, and trying to find the secrets of ocean
species.
)24.What can we learn about the author
from the underlined sentence in
Paragraph 1?
A.He seldom went sailing at the
sea.
B.He had a wonderful impression
of Halfmoon Bay.
C.He never went back to his
hometown.
D.He forgot his experiences about
the ocean.
()25.What is Australian marine life like
according to the second paragraph?
A.It is escaping from the Coral
Sea gradually.
B.It depends on reefs for living
greatly.
C.It is protected better than that
in other oceans.
D.It may be faced with danger.
()26.What is the aim of the Protect Our
Coral Sea activity?
A.To prevent more marine species
being endangered.
B.To contribute to a complete eco-
system.
C.To set up a large nature reserve
for reefs.
D.To raise more teenagers'envi-
ronmental awareness.
()27.Why do Angus and the author cre-
ate a little video?
A.To share their childhood experi-
ences about the ocean.
B.To inspire more people to study
the secret of the ocean.
C.To ask more people to take ac-

People often have the impression that Chi-
nese characters are extremely difficult to learn.
In fact,if you were to try to learn how to write
Chinese characters, you would find that they are
not nearly as difficult as you may have ima-
gined. And they certainly qualify as forming one
of the most attractive,beautiful,logical,and sci-
entifically constructed writing systems in the
world.Each stroke(笔画)has its own special
significance. If you are familiar with the rules of
Chinese characters, you will find it very easy to
remember even the most complicated looking
character,and never miss a stroke.
The earliest known examples of Chinese
written characters in their developed form are
carved into tortoise shells and ox bones. Most of
these characters are pictographs.Archaeologists
of various countries have learned that most early
writing systems went through a pictographic
stage,as did the Egyptian hieroglyphics.Most
writing systems,however,eventually developed a
phonetic(语音的)alphabet to represent the
sounds of spoken language rather than visual
images observed in the physical world.
One notable feature of Chinese characters
(59
高中英语必修第三册(人教版)
is the“radical”.“Radical'”in English means
“root”.For example,the characters yu“lan-
guage”,shuo“talk”,and lun“discuss”all
share the yan radical, which means "lan-
guage",and gives the reader a clue to the mean-
ing of the character as a whole. The characters
xiu“rotten”,shan“cedar”,tao“peach”and
lin“forest'”,all contain the mu“wood”or
"tree"ra-dical,indicating one of their shared
key characteristics. If you know the radical of a
character, you can usually get a general idea of
the meaning of the character.Although there is
a theoretical total of almost 50,000 written Chi-
nese characters, only about 5,000 of these are
frequently used;and the total number of radicals
is only 214.So learning to read and write Chi-
nese is not nearly so difficult a task as it may at
first seem.
(
)28.According to the author,Chinese
characters are
A.extremely difficult to learn
B.as difficult as you may have
imagined
C.scientifically constructed
D.difficult to remember
(
)29.Which of the following statements is
TRUE according to the passage?
A.There are rules in forming the
Chinese characters.
B.Some strokes are more important

than others.
C.All the Chinese characters are
pictographs.
D.Some writing systems eventually
developed a phonetic alphabet.
)30.Which radical do the characters chi
“eat”,he“dink”,uwen“kiss”,
and wei“feed”contain?
A.The mu“wood'or“tree”radical.
B.The kou“mouth”radical.
C.The zu“foot”radical.
D.The yan“language'”radical.
)31.The passage is mainly about
A.the radical of the Chinese cha-
racters
B.the strokes of the Chinese cha-
racters
C.pictographs
D.the Chinese writing system

You may normally think you eat food be-
cause it's food,and don't eat other things,be-
cause they're not.But a look at other cultures
will show you thatthat is not true."Food
behaviour is a product of culture,"according to
an article by Robert A.Leonard PhD.and Wen-
dy J.Saliba,MA,MBA."Food is an important
part of who you are."It goes on to name differ-
ent cultures, and how food choices change
through generations as immigrants seek accep-
tance into an American lifestyle.
Growing up in a Jewish neighbourhood, and
being an Irish Catholic,I found my friends'
families served different food than mine.Foods
that were never served in my home yet were
common in theirs.
I read their article just days after attending
my fortieth high school reunion, where many of
my classmates, returned from various parts of the
country. The common comment from the out-of-
towners was,“I have to get bagels(百吉圈)to
bring back for everyone".Bagels are especially
popular in communities with a large Jewish po-
pulation. When people moved away they real-
ized the bagels they grew up with, are a part of
their being.
Leonard points out that "Others'food ge-
nerally means claiming that they eat what we do
not".And,"Within our own groups,we confirm
our membership by preparing and eating certain
foods”
This is true within my own family. In
working with my Italian-American friends,I
have always heard them complain(抱怨)that
on Thanksgiving it is not the American customs
they find so challenging in managing their
weight,it's the mixing of their Italian customs
along with the American.Being Irish, this type
of celebration was alien to me,until my Italian

sister-in-law joined our family last year.On the
first Thanksgiving she hosted, she served both
the Italian and American menus. It was then I
truly understood the challenges for my Italian-
American friends.
Many restaurants in New York City are
known for having two separate menus. They will
offer one menu for the people of their culture
that includes their insider foods, and one for the
American consumers that does not.
(
)32.What's the root of different food be-
haviours according to Leonard?
A.Food taste.
B.Cultural background.
C.Personal preference.
D.Certain lifestyles.
)33.What do the Jewish people feel about
bagels?
A.They are usually served during
festivals
B.They are easy to carry.
C.They are a must-have for re-
unions.
D.They are a part of cultural iden-
tity.
