The exact location in France where Dutch master Vincent van Gogh painted his last work of art has been discovered.
A Dutch researcher figured out that a scene described in the artist’s last work, Tee Root, was visible on a postcard showing a man standing next to a bicycle on a back street of the village Auvers-sur-Oise. Van Gogh spent the last weeks of his life in the village. Helpfully, the card even included the name of the street.
Researchers were given a unique glimpse (体验) into the famous painter’s final hours. He was at work right up to the end.
Wouter van der Veen, scientific director of the Van Gogh Institute in France, made the discovery. While stuck at home, van de Veen used the extra time to organize the numerous files and documents on van Gogh, including images such as the old postcard from Auvers-sur-Oise. One day in late April, he saw the card on his computer screen and it suddenly struck him that he was looking at the location of Tree Roots. Next to the man and his bicycle, roots and trees are clearly visible. He took a virtual trip down the site using Google’s Street View.
“Villagers know the spot and the main tree root well, even giving it the name ‘the elephant’ because of its shapes,” van der Veen said. “It was really hiding in overt sight.”
The discovery provides tourists with an extra reason to visit Auvers-sur-Oise. “They travel a lot just for one reason — to walk in the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh. Now they can stand at the very place where he painted his last painting,” van der Veen said. “And that’s a very moving thing for a lot of people. So I’m very happy to be able to share that with all those who love van Gogh.”
4.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.What the postcard revealed. B.How Tree Roots was discovered.
C.Why Auvers-sur-Oise became known. D.Where van Gogh painted his works.
5.How did van der Veen confirm his discovery?
A.He studied a picture of Auvers-sur-Oise.
B.He organized his data on van Gogh.
C.He traveled to France to see for himself.
D.He paid a visit to the spot online.
6.What does the underlined word “overt” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Mixed. B.Obvious. C.Lovely. D.Strange.
7.What can we infer about tourists to Auvers-sur-Oise?
A.They enjoy exploring how to paint. B.They share their love for van Gogh.
C.They admire van Gogh very much. D.They want to experience the life there.

For some school children, PE is the best lesson of the week — a chance to leave the desk behind, get outside, and enjoy a run around with friends. For others, it is often an unhappy experience — a time when they feel embarrassed, and may even experience physical pain.
The idea of competitive sport was a clear source of argument. Those who were good at it did not want those less able to “get in the way”, while those less skilled felt annoyed for being made to compete. They also felt less “liked” by their PE teachers and their more sporty classmates.
Research shows that participation (参与) first over excellence can dramatically increase the confidence and participation rates of those less skilled — because it really is the taking part that matters. If schools value taking part above winning against other schools, the nature of PE changes.
As one pupil commented (评论): “I have actually joined the football team now, because all the violence has gone. Before it was, ‘You made us lose the game…, it’s all your fault.’ With the new approach, it is more like we are all in there just trying to get better. No one is to blame. Now it is worth doing.”
To those who argue we need competitive sport to “build character”, I would point out that there is quite simply no evidence to support this view. But what we can build if we allow young people to work together in a spirit of support and cooperation in the competitive sport is leadership and mutual understanding.
If we need competitive sport to build our national teams, this should happen out of school. PE is about the participation of all — not the excellence of a few.
At home, the most important thing a parent can do for a child who struggles with PE is to take their concerns seriously. Being physically active is very important for children and young people, so how, when, and at what level they do it should be their first choice.
8.What does the author consider the most important in PE lessons?
A.The rules of teachers. B.The available sports activities.
C.The participation of students. D.The spirit of winning over others.
9.Why does the author mention the comment of one pupil?
A.To support his argument. B.To praise the boy’s behavior.
C.To explain the new approach. D.To prove the violence of football.
10.What does the author think competitive sports fail to build?
A.Leadership. B.Character. C.Cooperation. D.Mutual understanding.
11.How should parents help children who struggle with PE?
A.By making a plan for them.
B.By letting them choose what to do.
C.By giving them psychological advice.
D.By encouraging them to be the most excellent.

Scientists at MIT have managed to change ordinary spinach (菠菜) plants into natural sensors which can find chemicals used in bombs. The secret to giving spinach these special powers is nanotech (纳米技术), which is scientific area that deals with making or changing things that are extremely tiny.
“Ordinary spinach plants can be found everywhere and easy to store; like other plants, they normally take in carbon dioxide gas,” the scientists say. “But actually they can sense small changes of soil and water potential and respond to them. If we tap into this point, there is a wealth of information to access.” That’s what the scientists use to power their tiny experiments.
For this experiment, the scientists placed two different kinds of tiny nano-materials into spinach plants. To get them into the plants, the scientists put a liquid containing them on the bottom of the plant’s leaves. As part of its natural process, the spinach plant pulls water through its roots and into its leaves. If the water contains certain chemicals used in bombs, the tiny sensors in the leaves make the nano-tubes, which, along with the sensors, were placed into the spinach plant before by the scientists, produce a slightly special kind of light. By watching the plant constantly using a camera attached to a cheap computer, the scientists set up a system that can send a warning email if chemicals from explosives are found in the water.
The computer the scientists used is about the size of a playing card. They say that in the future, their system could even use a cell phone with its camera changed slightly. Discovering chemicals used in bombs is just one of the many uses the researchers are exploring. They have used such plants to discover several other dangerous chemicals as well. From their point of view, there’s no doubt that in the future, such systems could give farmers specific information about the health of the land and water on their farms.
12.Why do the scientists use plants to do the experiment?
A.They are common in the daily life. B.They are environmentally responsive.
C.They absorb much carbon dioxide gas. D.They are small in size and easy to store.
13.What’s the function of the carbon nano-tubes placed into spinach plants?
A.To control the camera. B.To contain the liquid.
C.To fix the tiny sensors. D.To give off plant light.
14.What can we say about the application of the experiment?
A.It’s diverse. B.It’s unexpected. C.It’s limited. D.It’s cheap.
15.What’s the suitable title for the text?
A.Spinach Is Sensitive to Chemicals in Bombs
B.Spinach Sends Warning Emails Using Nanotech
C.Nanotech Helps Spinach Grov Healthily
D.Nanotech Protects Spinach from Danger

I was a broke university student. I should have been going to university on a scholarship because I came from a low-income family, but a last-minute £100-a-year pay rise for my mum pushed my family over the threshold(门槛) for what defined “low-income” and I was suddenly no longer qualified for £15,000 a year in scholarship money. This news came after I'd been accepted by the university and signed the lease(租约) for my accommodation.
Despite my family not being labelled low-income anymore, I still wouldn't receive any financial support from my family as all the income went toward taking care of my disabled brother and paying their own bills. It would be tight, but because I had savings from my part-time job, I decided to go to university anyway. After paying my rent, I had £10.20 a week for everything else including food, toiletries, and school supplies.
As I was in a new city, I really wanted to make friends, which was difficult when most of the social activities were expensive. Therefore, I jumped at the chance to do a relatively cheap coffee shop trip with my roommates who were pleasant to me.
I had £20 with me to get a cheap cup of coffee and my food shopping for a few weeks. So I headed for the coffee shop. While paying, I pulled out the note and a handful of change and realized I could pay without breaking the note, so I put it back in my pocket. It wasn't until I arrived at the supermarket that I realized the note was gone. What should I do? I was desperate it was the equivalent of two weeks of money. My roommates helped me look for the note. However, it was in vain. Finally, I went to school empty-handed.

【possible version】
As a final attempt, I messaged the coffee shop's Facebook page asking if they'd seen it. I must have sounded over worried in the post as I was soon flooded with abundant kind reviews, trying to offer some comfort, advice or even money. Suddenly, the shop's message caught my eye, saying that my note had been found. I darted to the coffee shop in no time, unable to believe my luck. Upon my arrival, the shop assistant handed me a brand new 20-pound note, at which I felt a bit surprised.(75 words)
I said, “Oh ... This isn’t mine; my note was an old worn one.” Hearing my words, the assistant immediately fished out another note, which apparently was still not my lost one. Seeing my confused look, the assistant explained several notes had been offered by customers, spreading even more notes on the desk. Touched as I was,I shook my head and refused the warm-hearted offer. Though I suffered a tight budget then, the kindness of strangers was a ray of light, giving me courage to overcome the challenge.(75 words)

D

Disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes or wildfires are typically unexpected, sudden and overwhelming. For many people, there are no outwardly visible signs of physical injury, but there can be an emotional damage. 36 Understanding responses to painful events can help you cope effectively with your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors, and help you along the path to recovery.
Luckily, most people are resilient (有适应力的) and over time are able to bounce back from tragedy. It is common for people to experience the immediate consequences. Within a few months, however, most people are able to resume functioning as they did prior to the disaster.
37
Give yourself time to adjust. Anticipate that this will be a difficult time in your life. 38 And try to be patient with changes in your emotional state.
Engage in healthy behaviors to enhance your ability to cope with extreme stress. Eat well-balanced meals and get plenty of rest. If you experience ongoing difficulties with sleep, you may be able to find some relief through relaxation techniques.
Establish or reestablish routines. This can include eating meals at regular times, sleeping and waking on a regular cycle, or following an exercise program. 39 For example, pursuing a hobby, or reading a good book is just among the recommended helpful routines.
40 Switching careers or jobs and other important decisions tend to be highly stressful in their own right and even harder to take on when you are recovering from a disaster.
A. Avoid making major life decisions.
B. Be brave enough to make critical life decisions.
C. Allow yourself to mourn the losses you have experienced.
D. Join those who have the similar experiences with you to relieve your pain.
E. Try to get involved in something you look forward to during these distressing times.
F. It is common for people who have experienced disasters to have strong emotional reactions.
G. It is of great importance to remember that resilience and recovery are the norm, not the lasting pain.

第二节 读后续写 (满分 25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As a final attempt, I messaged the coffee shop's Facebook page asking if they’d seen it.

I said, “Oh ... This isn't mine; my note was an old worn one".
