When I was young, I was very scared of dogs. Every time I passed by a dog on the street, I would hold my grandma’s hand and step back, too scared to make a sound. My grandma, who was always patient, would calm me down and say that dogs are humans’ friends. She told me a story about a life-saving dog to help me overcome my fear.
Long ago, Jim’s father gave him a dog as a gift for his 7th birthday. Jim named the dog Brownie. Soon, Jim and Brownie became very fond of each other.
There was a river near Jim’s house. He often went fishing there with his friends. One peaceful morning, Jim took Brownie to go fishing. He wanted to show Brownie his fishing skills. After waiting quietly by the river for a while, he suddenly felt a big pull from under the water. Jim got very excited, thinking he had gotten a huge fish. He tried his best to pull the fish up out of the water, but it wouldn’t move. Because of the strong pull, Jim lost his balance and fell into the cold river water. Sadly, he didn’t know how to swim. He cried and struggled in the water for a while, but soon went under.
As Jim woke up again, he felt the warmth on his face. Brownie was licking (舔) his face. It was trying to wake Jim up. Then Jim found himself lying on the riverbank. He found some big holes on his shirt, too. When he saw that, Jim smiled and hugged his best friend at once.

①For a long time Iceland was famous as one of the few countries in the world with no mosquitoes (蚊子). However, a recent discovery has changed this fact.
②The story began on a Thursday evening in October. Björn Haltason, a man who loves studying insects, found a strange insect. He quickly caught it because he thought it might be a mosquito. Excited by his find, he continued to look and later discovered two more of the same insects nearby. He carefully collected all of them and sent his findings to the Icelandic Institute (研究所) of Natural History.
③At the study center, an entomologist (昆虫学家) named Matthias Alfreðsson studied the insects. He made sure they were mosquitoes, specifically a special type called Culiseta annulata that can survive in very cold winters. This finding was very meaningful. It was the first official record of mosquitoes living and growing outdoors in Iceland. He explained that this type of mosquito is special because it can survive in the cold Icelandic winter. These insects stay in warm places during the coldest months, which allows them to live through the winter. Before this, mosquitoes were only sometimes found on planes arriving in the country, but they never managed to survive outside.
④The main reason for this change, scientists say, is because of climate change. As our planet becomes warmer, insects can move to and live in new areas. Iceland is warming at a speed of four times faster than the average in the Northern Hemisphere (北半球). This rapid warming makes the environment more suitable for mosquitoes.
⑤This discovery ends Iceland’s long history of being a mosquito-free country. It clearly shows how climate change is influencing our world in real and clear ways even changing which animals can live where.
根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。

A. Having many special types of mosquitoes
B. Being one of the countries with no mosquitoes
C. Having the best insect research center
D. Producing a lot of strange insects

A. It is often carried to Iceland by planes and adapts (适应) quickly
B. It gets enough food from local plants and animals
C. It stays in warm places during the coldest months
D. It is protected by local entomologists
38. How fast is Iceland warming compared to the average in the Northern Hemisphere?
A. Four times as fast B. Twice as fast
C. Five times as fast D. Ten times as fast
39. Which is the right structure of this article?
A. B. C. D.
40. What is the writer’s main purpose of writing this passage?
A. To encourage people to study insects.
B. To explain why Iceland had no mosquitoes in the past.
C. To tell a story about Björn’s discovery.

Children are the future of our world. The healthy development of children is important to any country. The world has long been looking for ways to support children’s healthy development. As for that, the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (《儿童友好城市倡议》), CFCI for short, provides us with a good way forward.
CFCI is an initiative started by UNICEF and UN-Habitat in 1996. The initiative calls on people to build a city in which children can grow up healthily and safely and make their voices heard. The initiative has made a big difference worldwide since it started. Now, there are about 1,000 child-friendly cities in the world.
Many cities in China have also shown their interest in joining the initiative. Shenzhen is one of the first cities in China that are trying to go child-friendly. The city came up with an initiative called “seeing the world from a height of one meter”. It calls on society to see the world from the view of children and hear their voices. The city has opened up many child-friendly spaces like reading rooms and playgrounds. Along with improving children’s living conditions, Shenzhen has also started child-friendly radio lines and programs to let children share their opinions.
Building child-friendly cities shows our wish for the healthy and happy growth of children. China plans to build 100 child-friendly cities. We hope that all the children can grow up healthily and happily.

What’s the hottest street snack in China right now? It’s milk skin tanghulu (奶皮子糖葫芦)! From Beijing to Shanghai, people line up at small stores just to taste it. “We came all the way here,” said three students waiting in line. “We saw it online. It looks so good. We can’t wait to try it!”
Tanghulu has a long history. In the Song Dynasty, the emperor’s favorite concubine (妃子) grew very sick. She was weak and didn’t want to eat anything. The emperor worried for three days. No medicine seemed to help until a doctor suggested, “Eat hawthorn berries (山楂果) cooked with sugar. Eat five to ten before each meal.” She tried it, and after a few weeks, her face turned pink again. People were amazed. Soon, tanghulu appeared on the streets, sold as a sweet snack for everyone to enjoy.
Now, the new kind of tanghulu adds cream. The chef cooks the sugar until it bubbles (起泡). Then, the fruit is rolled through the hot syrup (糖浆). With a quick tap-pop! —the tanghulu hits a piece of milk skin and sticks together.
Each bite of the milk skin tanghulu is a small surprise. The creamy milk skin, the crispy coat, and the soft fruit all mix together. But milk skin tanghulu is more than a snack. It shows that old favorites can become popular again, because it connects traditional Chinese culture with modern tastes, letting people enjoy history in a tasty way.

①For a long time, Iceland was famous as one of the few countries in the world with no mosquitoes (蚊子).
It clearly shows how climate change is influencing our world in real and clear ways, even changing which animals can live where.

38. How fast is Iceland warming compared to the average in the Northern Hemisphere?

What’s the hottest street snack in China right now? It’s milk skin tanghulu (奶皮子糖葫芦)! From Beijing to Shanghai, people line up at small stores just to taste it. “We came all the way here,” said three students waiting in line. “We saw it online. It looks so good. We can’t wait to try it!”
Tanghulu has a long history. In the Song Dynasty, the emperor’s favorite concubine (妃子) grew very sick. She was weak and didn’t want to eat anything. The emperor worried for three days.
【答案】
The Person Who Made Me Warm
Last winter, I was walking home in heavy rain without an umbrella. A kind lady saw me and kindly shared hers. She walked with me all the way to my building, though her own home was far away. Her coat was wet, but she just smiled and said, “Take care, dear.”
This stranger’s help warmed my heart deeply. Though I never saw her again, I’ll always remember her kindness. I hope she is happy and healthy wherever she is.
