In the past few months, the world has been excited about a new AI model, DeepSeek-R1. It was developed by DeepSeek, a Chinese company in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The new AI came out on January 20th, 2025. In just one week, it beat other AI models and became the No. 1 free app in the app stores. So far, it has changed the AI world greatly.

  Its developer said that DeepSeek-R1 is as good at difficult tasks as other AI models. More importantly, it’s the cheapest of its kind, costing only about 5.57 million dollars. That is much cheaper than other similar AI models.

  DeepSeek-R1’s success largely came from its special training method. 　▲　 One is CoT (思维链), where AI learns to break problems into smaller and simpler steps. The other is SFT (监督微调), which works by showing AI lots of practice problems along with the right answers.
