It seems very natural that if you have two dollars and someone gives you two more, you will have four dollars. But do you know it 1 took human beings a very long time to understand numbers this way? That’s why teaching children about numbers is one of the most 2 things too.
In ancient times when people wanted to count their animals, they had no system of numbers to use. They would put a 3 into a bag for each animal. The more animals they owned, the more stones they had. It may 4 why the word “calculate” comes from the Latin word “calculus” which means “stone”.
Then, people started using lines to count. They would draw a line for each thing they counted, but they still hadn’t 5 words for numbers, so they could not write the numbers down.
Later on, people used fingers. Again, we have the word that goes back to (追溯) this. The word “digit” comes from the Latin word “digitus” which means “finger”! The ten-finger counting system influenced the 6 of our base-10 number system.
The number system we use today was first 7 in India. It became 8 in the Arab countries. Then Arab traders (商人) 9 it to Europe. Today, these numbers are 10 as Arabic numerals. This system is called the decimal system (十进制) because it uses the number 10 as its base.

In the past few months, the world has been excited about a new AI model, DeepSeek-R1. It was developed by DeepSeek, a Chinese company in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The new AI came out on January 20th, 2025. In just one week, it beat other AI models and became the No. 1 free app in the app stores. So far, it has changed the AI world greatly.

Instead of using the traditional ways, DeepSeek mainly uses the method called RL (强化学习). For example, in a clean-up game, it gets points for picking up trash like plastic bottles and loses points for breaking a glass. After some time, it can find the best way to play the game all by itself.
What’s more, DeepSeek-R1 is free for everyone to get a copy of its code (代码). They can also change the code when they want to use it for themselves. Being free is important. It helps users share knowledge so that it can be used more widely around the world.
