For whoever wants an exciting and challenging road trip, we came up with our list of the world’s most dangerous roads that would test even the best road trip cars. Read on to discover routes that promise unmatched thrills!
Col du Chaussy, France
At 1,532 metres above sea level, Col du Chaussy is a high mountain pass in south-eastern France. This stretch is only about 3.2km long but features 17 hairpin turns. There’s a small concrete barrier as you zigzag upward but this improbable road, while impossibly picturesque, is still one of the most dangerous roads in the world.
Taroko Gorge Road, Taiwan
Taroko Gorge Road in Taiwan is framed by rock on one side and sheer cliff drops on the other. The popular 19km stretch is so spectacular that it draws a constant parade of tour buses, cars, scooters, bicyclists and pedestrians, all sharing the same narrow road. If you want to hit this road, you’d better hope the weather is fair, otherwise, you might suffer through landslides and floods that make sections impassable.
Commonwealth Avenue, Philippines
Unlike other roads and highways on this list, this one isn’t located on the edge of a mountain. In fact, it’s a wide urban highway that’s just 12km long. Due to poor drainage (排水系统) which brings floods on the avenue, this road has earned the tragic nickname “Killer Highway”.
Inspired to embark on one of these epic journeys? To learn more details, including the best times to visit, and how to rent the perfect vehicle, please click www.roadtrip.com. Your next great adventure is just a click away!

Henry Ford was the first person to build cars which were cheap, strong and fast. By the age of 29, in 1892, he had built his first car. However, the car made in this way, the famous “Model T” did not appear until 1908.
Five years ago, Ford started his great motor car factory. This kind of car showed to be well-known that it remained unchanged for twenty year. Monarch butterflies have amazed the world with their annual migration south from the United States and Canada to California and Mexico. But habitat loss endangers the future of not just the butterflies, but other pollinators (传花粉者) necessary for the nation’s ecosystems.
“We have to do something now, before it’s too late,” said Ethan Walsh, a senior philosophy student at California State University, Northridge.
Ethan and his mother, Christina Walsh are working closely with the Chumash tribe (部落) to restore (恢复) and improve habitats for monarch butterflies and other pollinators. They are planting milkweed and other pollinator-friendly plants at three sites on 210 acres of the Chumash ancestral lands. As a result, about 140 acres of habitat have been improved.
“Creating space for pollinators on ancestral land helps meet the migratory needs of the monarch butterflies and habitat needs of other native pollinators,” Ethan said.
The restoration efforts center around native milkweed, the only plant monarch butterflies will eat. Native milkweed has been rapidly disappearing for a number of reasons.
Ethan and his mother have spent years collecting the seeds (种子) of milkweed plants native to the area. The Walshes have collected 2 pounds of native milkweed seeds so far, and they aim to collect 7 pounds in total. They are planting these seeds along with other pollinator-friendly plants: The goal is to make sure there is enough milkweed for monarch butterflies to eat on their journey.
The project also includes setting up a teaching and demonstration site at the Chumash information center, so visitors can learn about habitat restoration efforts and perhaps learn some lessons and apply them in their own communities. “We don’t want what we are doing to be kept a secret,” Ethan said. “We and the Chumash tribal leaders want to share so that others can learn from what we’re doing.”
28. What is one problem for monarch butterflies?
A. Habitats are getting smaller.
B. Air pollution is getting worse.
C. Temperatures are getting higher.
D. Competition among butterflies is increasing.
29. What other plants are included in the Walshes’ planting efforts besides native milkweed seeds?
A. Native trees. B. Plants that are good for pollinators.
C. Edible flowers. D. Plants that provide shade for birds.
30. What do the numbers in paragraph 3 mean?
A. The Walshes need to find new partners.
B. The Walshes’ work has had some success.
C. The Chumash tribe’s lands are being gradually destroyed.
D. The Chumash tribe has a long history of raising monarch butterflies.
31. Why do the Walshes try to grow native milkweed?
A. To study the reasons for the migration of monarch butterflies.
B. To change the eating habits of monarch butterflies.
C. To help monarch butterflies shorten their journey.
D. To provide enough food for monarch butterflies.

The documentary All That Breathes, featuring the bird-saving brothers Nadeem Shehzad and Mohammad Saudi, was praised highly among the critics. The birds they save are black kites (黑鸢). The brothers have a deep love for this meat-eating, misunderstood bird. People think of them as vicious (凶猛的) hunters but they hunt only when they need to, say the brothers. For the most part, the birds are scavengers (食腐动物). They’re an unloved bird. Some people are even scared of them.
Nadeem Shehzad calls the weeks after mid-July “a blood bath”. It’s a great time for kite-flying in Delhi. At this time of year, the brothers take in bird after bird, their wings torn and bodies bleeding, to the bird hospital they run from their home. Many people in Delhi take part in a popular kite-fighting game in which they aim to cut through the strings (细绳) of an opponent’s kite. They use the manja, a kite whose string is coated with powdered glass. The glass-covered string can be a danger for birds.
For years, the brothers have tried to build awareness about these deadly kites while struggling to save the bird victims. After the success of the documentary, donations poured in from all over the world. At the end of the documentary, Nadeem was preparing to study veterinary science (兽医学) in the U.S. He was accepted at a private university in North Carolina but wasn’t able to go because his $5,000 scholarship would only cover 10% of the costs. “It’s always been a dream to study in the U.S.,” he says.
He still hopes to get formal scientific training to improve the knowledge he and his brother have gained on their own. For example, the manja kite strings cause such deep and complex wounds to birds’ wings that some can never fly again. Many veterinarians told them that these wounds simply cannot heal (治愈) completely. However, Nadeem used their own technique to help those with the worst of injuries fly again. Nadeem hopes to conduct research and share his knowledge with the wider community of veterinarians and rescuers.
32. What is people’s attitude towards black kites according to the brothers?
A. Positive. B. Unsure. C. Concerned. D. Negative.
33. What endangers the lives of black kites?
A. Their lack of food. B. Their short wings.
C. Treating them as playthings. D. Using glass-coated strings on kites.
34. What does the underlined word “opponent” mean in paragraph 2?
A. friend. B. volunteer. C. competitor. D. supporter.
35. What prevented Nadeem from achieving his dream?
A. He had to treat injured birds.
B. His inability to afford the costs.
C. He had to look after his younger brother.
D. His wrong understanding of private universities.

Does this situation seem familiar to you? Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading comprehension is no problem, and you are speaking quite fluently. ___36___
First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening is probably the most difficult job for almost all learners of English as a foreign language. The most important thing is to listen as often as possible. ___37___ The Internet is really a useful tool for English students. You can download the RealPlayer. The RealPlayer allows you to use the Internet like a radio station.
Once you have begun to listen on a regular basis, you might still be frustrated by limited understanding. ___38___
Here is some of the advice I give my students:
● Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything.
● Stay relaxed when you do not understand, and try listening to the material for more times.
● Do not translate everything into your native language.
● ___39___ Don’t concentrate on details before you have understood the main ideas.
● Listen to something you enjoy.
I remember the problems I had in understanding spoken German when I first went to Germany. In the beginning, when I didn’t understand a word, I insisted on translating it in my mind. This method usually resulted in confusion. ___40___ Firstly, translating creates a barrier between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people repeat themselves constantly. By remaining calm, I noticed that even if I did not pay much attention I could usually understand what the speaker had said.
A. What should you do?
B. Listen for the general idea of the conversation.
C. But you can’t follow a native English speaker at all!
D. But listening is a problem for most of the beginners!
E. So, what you need to do is to find listening resources.
F. However, after several weeks, I got used to the new environment in Germany.
G. Then, after the first six months, I discovered two extremely important facts.

M: Sticky rice mortar? I’ve never heard of that in all my years in the building trade.
W: It’s a traditional mixture. Some modern materials won’t work here — they could damage the ancient bricks over time.
M: I see. It looks like the restoration will be a tough task.
W: Yes. The wall has stood for centuries, so any restoration work must be carefully planned. As the project manager, I am responsible for everything, including matching the new bricks to the old ones, considering size and color, etc.
M: That’s quite a job you’ve got here.
W: It is, but it’s important. Rushing the job or using the wrong materials could cause serious damage.

W: Of course. What do I need to know?
M: First, always wash your hands before handling any food. We wash for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm water. It’s crucial because hands can easily spread germs (细菌).
W: Understood.
M: We store food at the correct temperatures to prevent problems. For example, cold food must be kept at 5 °C or below, while hot food should be maintained at 63 °C or higher. You’ll need to check the temperature regularly and record it.
W: Got it. What about cooking?
M: When cooking, we ensure food reaches the right temperature. For instance, chicken must reach at least 75 °C to kill harmful germs. You should always use a food thermometer (温度计) to check.
W: How do we prevent germs from spreading?
M: Good question. We use separate cutting boards and knives for raw meat, vegetables, and cooked food. This prevents raw meat juices from harming other foods, which could cause food poisoning.
W: That’s really important.

Most of those affected have been relocated to the nearby town of Reding while emergency services continue to try and rescue people stuck in their homes. The Prime Minister thanked the workers for their quick reactions and hard work and promised that more investment would be made in flood defenses. He also said more needed to be done to address the issue of climate change, which many scientific experts have said played a significant part in the flooding. Many celebrities have made donations to the relief effort.

【答案】28. A 29. B 30. B 31. D

【答案】32. D 33. D 34. C 35. B

根据上文“Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading comprehension is no problem, and you are speaking quite fluently.”(你的英语进步很好,语法很熟悉,阅读理解没有问题,而且你说得很流利。)提到你的英语进步很好,以及下文“First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening is probably the most difficult job for almost all learners of English as a foreign language. The most important thing is to listen as often as possible. ”(首先,记住你并不孤单。听力可能是几乎所有英语学习者最难的工作。最重要的是要尽可能多地听。)说明提高听力是最重要的,由此可知,上下文形成转折,结合选项C项But you can’t follow a native English speaker at all!(但是你根本听不懂母语是英语的人说的话!)符合此推断,起到上下文的承上启下作用,上下文语意连贯。故选C项。
【37题详解】

【39题详解】
根据下文“Don’t concentrate on details before you have understood the main ideas.”(在你理解主旨之前,不要把注意力集中在细节上。)可知,讲的是不要把注意力集中在细节上,要把握大意。结合选项B项Listen for the general idea of the conversation.(听这段对话的大意。)可知,和下文意思一致,上文the main ideas和该句中the general idea of the conversation.是同义词,上下文紧密连接,符合语境。故选B项。
【40题详解】
根据下文“Firstly, translating creates a barrier between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people repeat themselves constantly.”(首先,翻译在听者和说者之间制造了障碍。其次,大多数人不断地重复自己。)可知,说明两点错误做法的事实。结合选项G项Then, after the first six months, I discovered two extremely important facts.(然后,在头六个月之后,我发现了两个极其重要的事实。)由此可知,下文提到的两点正是作者六个月后的体会,上下文紧密连接,符合语境。故选G项。

Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to propose a one-day study trip for our international students, exploring “Tradition and Modernity” right here in our city.
In the morning, we will visit a century-old tea house in the old town, where students will not only observe an authentic tea ceremony but also have the first-hand chance to brew tea themselves. In the afternoon, we will head to a robotics startup founded by our alumni. There, students will see how cutting-edge technology is being integrated into daily life and industry.
Through this experience, our international peers will gain a memorable perspective on contemporary Chinese society. Hope you will take my proposal into consideration.
Yours,
Li Hua
Version two:
Dear Mr. Smith,
For the “Tradition and Modernity” study trip, I recommend a route from a historical museum to a digital art gallery.
The journey would begin at the city museum, where a variety of ancient artifacts will immerse students in profound traditional culture. Afterwards, we will proceed to the newly-built gallery and explore how interactive technologies like VR and holograms are used to reinterpret and bring classical masterpieces to life. This past and present dialogue will remind students of the fundamental role tradition plays in nurturing modern creativity and innovation.
I believe it will inspire our students to rethink how cultural heritage and modern innovation coexist. Thank you for considering my proposal.
